you the back of the house during the fire. you can see the bottom there, you can see that there's very little if any flames showing, very little smoke on top. then on the right hand side here you see 21 seconds later that's the house. you can see that the flames are just basically exploding on that floor and lots and lots of smoke pouring out of that roof. after a sliding glass door that had broken. it was june 2nd 2011 that members of station 26 responded to the fire on berkeley way. perez and valerio were the first ones in the house and at the time there was a lot of smoke but little fire. at the time, oxygen fed the fire. >> what tony and perez did was exactly what any of us would

have done that day. there was a fire at the scene, they reported to the fire. they made contact with the owner and entered the building with a hose line to attempt to put out the fire. >> reporter: before that window had broken out the temperature was some where around 200 degrees. once the oxygen was let in through that broken window it climbed very quickly to close to 700 degrees. far far too hot for even the protective gear that the firefighters were wearing to protect them through that and so that super heated air which did not include any flames, that super heated air is what killed them as they suffered burns on 40% of their body. this report includes several recommendations, including the recommendation of the safety of radios. we want to show you the radios

owned by the firefighters. those radios just simply were destroyed. that's something they want the national fire safety officials to take a look at to see if they can standardize some of that. and hopefully in the future find a solution for that. a worker has been killed in some type of industrial accident. it happened in ocala avenue east of redwood airports and the capital expressway. police have reponded to the scene but have not released any details. investigators discovered more human remains today in calav era s county. they are searching two different northern california counties for possible victims of two serial killers.

our rita williams live with some of the details. >> reporter: gasia, hayward police here and an anxious mother now are paying close attention to the searches in calav era s and san joaquin county. search dogs led investigators to a partial dog and other human remains. yesterday they found another skull, the areas next to property where wesley shermentine once lived. >> there's a lot more down there. he was well known around town and he used to go around bragging that he used to kill people and he used to bury people here or there. >> reporter: there's also a search in san joaquin county digging up an old well where shermantine allegedly said more than a dozen bodies were buried. through a cell, shermantine

drew maps where he said he and his partner buried bodies. sherzog who hung himself last month kidnapped 9-year-old macaila harris. >> i don't think shermanine has claimed to have any direct knowledge about makalia just said that the suspect looks like our composite which it does. >> i am still believing that michaela is alive some where out there. >> reporter: now it'll take dna analysis and some time to determine the identities of the remains found today and at 6:00 we'll have more with michaela garretts mother and the now 24 year wait she's had for answers. reporting live in hayward, rita williams, ktvu channel 2 news. the question of whether accused serial killer naso can

respect himself is still up in the air tonight. he said he did not want to fill out a questionnaire the law requires of defendants that defend themselves. but that he also did not want the public defender to represent him. so the judge asked him to come back next wednesday with that questionnaire filled out. nasso is accused of killing four women. san jose police found drugs and weapons miles from a school. jade hernandez is live with an operation that took down the organization today. >> reporter: today seven pit bulls and puppies were brought here today. hundreds of shotguns after a huge bust in the east part of the city. we're told the amount of the marijuana found could be sold for close to $40,000 on the

street. officers also found a digital scale, small banks to distribute the drugs, a sawed off shotgun and a stolen gun from inside the home. that's when officers surrounded it and demanded anyone inside come out. police arrested one man and took a woman and infant into custody. that woman and her child were later released. >> our main concern, finding the drugs were great, but our main concern are the guns. these are guns that cause a lot of damage on the streets. >> reporter: animal control rounded up the nine pit bulls and brought them here to the shelter. two of them are still here for evaluation. we spoke to neighbors who suspected problems at the house raided but due to the nature of the bust they were uncomfortable talking to us on camera. reporting live, jade hernandez,

ktvu channel two news. president obama today vowed to pressure from conservatives and religious leaders. >> this is an issue where people of good will on both sides of the debate have been sorted through some very complicated questions to find a solution that works for everyone. >> mr. obama acknowledged the political fire storm that arose when he required catholic groups to pay for birth control for their employees. now the president is offering what he is calling accommodation. the plan requires insurance companies to provide contraceptive services free of charge. >> women who work at these companies will have access to contraceptives just like every

woman. cardinal timothy dolan the head of the u.s. conference of catholic bishops says he is reviewing the plan but calls it a step in the right direction. senator oren hatch of utah says this is about religious freedom and anything short of a full exception is no compromise. barbara boxer said the president's new policy protects religious freedom andwomen's health. in a statement, boxer said the fact that groups from planned parenthood to the catholic association should put an end to the vicious political attacks and allow us all to focus on providing these critical health benefits. republican presidential candidate rick santorum today blasted the president's new birth control plan. santorum said the president has been trying to impose his values on the american people. and he said even the government should not pay for contraceptive devices. >> it's not about contraception, it's about economic liberty, it's about

10 states last april. officials say 130 americans were reported killed in mexico last year from the ongoing battle with drug cartels. most popular travel destinations are not on the list. chairman of the federal reserve said today the slugish housing market is still dragging down the u.s. economic recovery and hurting american families. fed chair ben bernanke spoke to the national association of home builders in orlando and he had a gloomy outlook on the foreclosure crisis and its effects on homeowners. >> they are relatively high rate of foreclosures is likely to continue for a while. putting additional homes on the market and dislocating families and communities in the process. >> bernanke said as homes have lost value, homeowners have had to tighten their spending. stocks fell sharply today on word of a delay in greece's

the city of oakland today began legal proceedings to shut town two motels. officials say prostitutes often use to have sex with customers. as claudine wong reports the city attorney says it's an attempt to deal with the long time problem. >> reporter: we went to both

the economy end and the national lodge early this morning. the woman inside the national lodge turned around and walked behind a door when she saw our cameras. the clerk at the economy lodge more helpful. he said everyone gets a flier warning that prostitution isn't allowed. >> has the problem gotten better? did you know there was a problem? >> i think this is working. >> reporter: you think this is working. >> reporter: but people we talked to said prostitution is a long time problem here. this man who says he used to be a john says he sees the women he used to hire. >> this was a pretty common hotel. are there ones you don't know on the strip you can go to? >> this is a common hotel. this one here. >> reporter: the national lodge has a spot reserved for oakland pd and we did see several patrol cars, this officer

stopped one suspected prostitute. but the city attorney says prostitution, kidnapping and rape are ongoing problems that have not gotten any better. >> we think we have to take drastic measures to address a drastic problem. >> reporter: taking the stand in court today, residents and people who work in that area who say they are fed up and want their neighborhood back. >> this is a really important issue for our neighborhood. really important issue for our families, so you know, i'm nervous but i'm happy to do it. the defense says this case demonizes the hotel owners who are doing everything they can. they are saying the problem of prostitution is much bigger than the hotel owners. if you ride san francisco's munni line on the weekend you will want to know about service interruptions going on. nummi plans to shut down the line for six consecutive weekends. that's so crews request work on well replacement. shuttles will carry passengers between ocean beach and church

street. nummi plans to run extra trains. nummi wants to add more cameras that capture the license plates of vehicles that park illegally. nummi wants the entire fleet to have those cameras by next year. nummi hopes that cameras will help buses run on time. the house of representatives is expected to vote next year on a sweeping and expensive plan that will help rebuild california's roads, bridges and transit system. california is one of the states set to benefit from $260 billion plan. state would get 2.8 billion every year. the law would not include any earmarks and supporters say eliminating them will save tax money from being used on wasteful pet projects. >> what happened with an earmark is that when a member of congress adds it to a bill. they are making the decisions

maybe a little bit before 4:00 we had information that there was an armed robbery of some kind. and i'm going to stop with the narrative because we're hearing what sounds to be more tear gas canisters being fire into the house in question. we've seen that happen in the last few minutes as officers were moving in and setting up around this house during the stand off. it started as an armed robbery. as we walk around here, we can give you a view of the s.w.a.t. team that has set up outside of the home. from the information we have, there were some officers that followed the suspect, possibly in a vehicle after this possibly armed robbery. and at some point they came to this location to castle wood and springs road and made their way inside the house. now of course we have the stand off that you see right now. we are just steps away from springs town middle school. you can see there's a very large crowd that has gathered

here on this busy street to see what's happening. as a large number of police have surrounded the area. this stand off still going on right now. police working to bring out the suspect. it's not clear exactly how many might be inside. we are going to continue to monitor the situation of course and bring you updates as we get them. live here in vallejo, eric rasmussen. two east bay cities could soon see a driver friendly change to their parking policies and it's all meant to help anyone rushing to feed the meter. >> they're tired of the got you. they think they're on time to their meter, they run out of a bookstore. they leave lunch and they get to their car and they may be one or two minutes left and there's a big fine on their car. >> reporter: both oakland and berkeley are considering legislation that would ban parking officers from writing tickets if the driver is present. drivers we spoke to say they

would appreciate that move. >> i could use some leeway. >> do you feel you're in a time crunch once you put those coins in. >> definitely, it's a race against time. >> reporter: tickets for parking at an expired meter can cost you up to $70. each city collects $1.5 million a year from those parking meters. both city councils are set to discuss the new ordnance next tuesday. vallejo police are paying tribute to a fallen officer with a song. >> ♪ vallejo police officer wrote this song for officer kapoot. proceeds will go toward the james kapoot memorial fund.

school officials on the peninsula launch an internal investigation after a teacher is accused of harming some extremely young extremely vulnerable students. eight people from a redwood city school are on administrative leave tonight following allegations a special education teacher abused two of her students. robert handa has why more staff

members are being drawn in this case. >> reporter: the abuse allegations is generating more investigations and anger. there was a lot of emotion swirling around the roosevelt school, the special education preschool is housed on campus. and parents were already reeling after finding out last week that a teacher 43-year-old alexia bogdis was arrested for striking two students. >> the allegations are that mrs. bogdis conducted five counts of alleged child abuse. >> reporter: the investigation led to eight other teachers and aides put on administrative leave. >> when you have kids at school you trust the teachers and if someone wants to become a teacher they also have to think

about the consequences and what they're getting into. especially with special needs kids. >> reporter: the attorney for one of the family of the children struck by bogdis spoke to us. >> they don't know how to care for that child because the school district won't tell them what happened. >> reporter: the school district says it is seeking an independent investigation. >> each of these aids and teachers were required to step forward. this is like the joe paterno stand -- scandal but in redwood city. >> reporter: bogdis attorney said she denies the allegations, plans to vigorously fight the charges in court. she is due to be arranged march fourth. we have new information

about a los angeles teacher arrested on child abuse chargeless. the school district settled the appeal by giving him four months of back pay and reimbursing his health care costs. it said it did so because it had no evidence to defend the firing. bert is now being held on $2.3 million bail. investigators now say a piedmont man accused of killing a federal customs agents was obsessed with that man's wife. 61-year-old dennis bag well appeared in court but did not enter a plea. his wife was a student of bagwell at the bay area optical school. police say in court records, bagwell fan ta sized about having a relationship with her. investigators say among other things they found photos and that bagwell was spotted lurking in the bushes outside the couple's home. they are back and they have

a new set of demands. occupy protesters have set up tents and police are standing by. rob roth has the story. >> reporter: occupy cal has six tents up. while the university has asked the students to remove the encampment the students have not budged. it's been peaceful even playful. but the students say they are serious. they have a list of demands including calling a halt to the recent tuition hikes. and they want to send a message that occupy is not going away. >> people are coming up to me like is occupy still happening? i was shocked. >> reporter: university officials say they are closely monitoring the encampment and have issued only warnings that students are violating school policy. but the university clearly doesn't want a repeat of last

november. that's when cameras photographed police of officers striking students with batons. >> clearly we are taking a different track at this point. and trying to really ask them to leave. >> i think it has a lot to do with the police brutality people have seen in the last few months. i think they are trying to play it cool. >> reporter: the students said they would like to meet with university officials to discuss their demands but no such talks appear forthcoming. >> i think i would be naive to say that they are not going to act, but what is definitely lacking is dialogue. >> reporter: and we're back live where students are gathered near their tents. in the past police have often removed these tent villages in the middle of night. but for now the tents are here and there are no police in sight. reporting live at uc berkeley, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. republican presidential candidate mitt romney got a huge ovation from a

conservative political group today. >> thank you. >> reporter: romney spoke at the annual conservative political active conference in washington, d.c. the former massachusetts governor said he was a severity conservative governor in this deep blue state. he also called obama the poster child for the arrogance of government. >> history will record the obama presidency as the last gasp of liberalisms great failure. and a turning point for the conservative era to come. >> reporter: romney also campaigned in virginia today. he said schwarzenegger once flexed his muscles to lure workers to california. romney's surprising counter attack. gingrich also drew cheers at that convention. he criticized republican leaders for not embracing conservatism. >> the gop has a single word they use with contempt for

conservative ideas. they say they are unrealistic. so creating 16 million jobs under reagan, unrealistic. >> the former house speaker invoked president ronald reagan's game several times in his speech to the conservative speech. firefighters credit a sprinkler system with helping them contain a fire in a lumberyard in san rafael. it broke out this morning at rafael lumber supply. investigators believe it may have started in the rear of the service center which is attacked to the main builder. the fire burned quite an amount of material before the fire was brought under control. a san francisco woman pleaded not guilty today to charges stemming from an explosion at an engle side apartment where police say she was trying to manufacture

drugs. solis is charged with six counts including child endangerment. cisneros was using a butane tank to make the drugs when that tank exploded. her bail is set at $300,000. she was ordered to return to court later this month. we have new developments in the breaking news we've been following for you throughout this newscast happening right now in solano county. let's go to eric rasmussen for what's happening there on the ground. >> reporter: i want to show you what's happening. in the last few minutes we saw smoke start coming from the top of this house. i'm being told by police we have to move right now. they are physically moving us out of the area. they're bringing police back in. you see that car moving in. you see the officer moving here. if we move over to the right you can see that fire truck is now moving in. this is where this stand off has been happening. in just the last few minutes i

heard reports of shots fired inside the home. literally 30 seconds after that, smoke began billowing out of the top of this house. they pushed this entire crowd that's out here, that was standing on the perimeter back out of the direct line of fire considering that there were shots fired. again we're watching this all develop right now. police and firefighters scrambling at the scene. we're at castle wood and springs road in vallejo where a stand off happened earlier today after an apparent armed robbery. just look at that. we have what appears to be a pretty serious fire happening here in the middle of a stand off with suspects that could have been involved in an armed robbery. very chaotic scene. we are going to continue monitoring and we'll be sure to come back to you shortly. rules are in effect tonight and they will be designed to make school buses safer. why the ntsb is coming out with those rules now and how they are expected to work. and new information tonight about america's cup. the huge bill the city may be

>> reporter: the latest development we're watching is the smoke that's been coming outs of this house in the last few minutes, i heard a report of shots fired. like i had mentioned in the last update then smoke just started coming out of the top of the house here. this is where the stand off has been happening where police have been focused. in fact, right now we hear another fire truck trying to make its way into the scene. you see the huge crowd on the street. this is on springs road in vallejo. police are now shouting at cars to get out of the way as they try to get another fire truck in here. i'm going to move our tripod out of the way. this fire truck obviously would be the second unit from the fire department responding to this fire that started up. we can show you that there's still a heavy police presence here because we were right in the middle of stand off when this fire broke out. i got information that there were in fact, shots fired from inside the house before this fire started. to backtrack a little bit. this all started with a

suspected armed robbery over on the 1300 block of tualami here in vallejo. officers i'm told followed those suspects they ended up here at the corner of castle woods and springs road. they've since surrounded the house and we have this chaotic development that you see here as police and firefighters are now trying to sort through the situation. it is still developing and we'll stay on top of it. we're live here in vallejo, eric rasmussen. >> thanks, eric. the national transportation safety board released a new list of school bus recommendations that they say will save lives. they're calling for redesigned school bus exits that are easier to unlatchh and keep open. >> the largest percentage of injuries and fatalities are not actually on the bus it's from crossing the street.

the scene of breaking news we've been covering for you in vallejo throughout this newscast. smoke is billowing out of a home that's surrounded by police and s.w.a.t. the situation has been unfolding in the last few minutes. eric what do you have. >> reporter: this is a situation that started with police chasing armed robbery suspects. for all we know they are still inside. around 5:30 i heard reports of shots fired and almost immediately after we started seeing the smoke come pouring out of the roof of this house here on castle wood drive and springs road in vallejo. there's a large crowd of people

watching this unfold. a very tense situation. in fact, around the time of those shots fire and the fire police rushed out and moved a very large crowd of 50 or so people out of the line of fire that we're all here watching this stand off. right now, firefighters are still working to move their way in at the very same time. police i've seen still have their guns out and ready to go if there's a confrontation with this suspect. we're watching it all unfold and it has been very chaotic here this evening. >> hey eric it's mike. i have to ask you when firefighters get on scene they got on the defensive zone, go in the house and see who's inside and pull them out. do you know if they've been told by police to stand down. or have you seen firefighters go into that home that's on fire? >> reporter: you know i don't know that i've seen firefighters going in. it doesn't mean they have it. but the way you described it is the way it's playing out.

they have a stretcher ready to go to get any victims that may be injured in this fire. right now john, if we can look back at the house. we've seen the smoke intensify here. you see the thick black smoke now pouring out of the corner of that house. and that is just developed here in the last few seconds. it looked like it was letting up. now it's gotten quite a bit more intense. it is not clear if firefighters have been able to make their way inside the house. it appeared before this all started that officers were trying to use tear gas to try to smoke these suspects out of the home. of course the situation has totally changed at this point as they try to stop this fire and solve whatever crime happened here. >> so essentially, looks like this neighborhood is paralyzed because this is where the robbers ended up after a robbery that took place about a mile away on the other side of 80 from where you are right now. >> reporter: that's our

understanding. i'm not exactly sure how the geography plays out from here. but we're told the robbery happened in vallejo. we're just giving you another look right now at this crowd that has gathered in the last few hours here. a couple of hours here to see what is going on you can see springs road is a very busy road. but again this is something that has across the city and has ended up here with this situation. >> reporter: eric, you haven't seen anyone come out of that house yet just to clarify. and if you can answer this question, this is the same house where these armed robbery suspects were in there? >> reporter: that's our understanding, that is the house that police were focused on and as a photographer sean druman has been captures these pictures. i have been trying to keep my eyes peeled to see if anybody other than officers and firefighters are coming out of there. right now it's difficult to see with all the smoke.
