fire has been knocked down. but we also understand that firefighters are in something of a defensive mode not going into this house just yet. that has been the focus of a stand off here this afternoon. of course the big question right now is, what is happening with the suspects that were supposedly inside. where are they now? we want to show you some video that we shot earlier on this evening. this is about 30 minutes ago when we heard shots fired and i'm talking moments later we saw smoke start to billow up from the roof of this house. we're understanding that it's some where in the back of the house perhaps where this fire started. that was right in the middle of this stand off. so suddenly police came out, they moved the crowd back that was watching this all unfold. firefighters moved in to begin dealing with the fire on top of the fact that there are suspects in there who may have been involved in an armed robbery. we have some other video we want to show you before the fire started. this hall originated as a stand

off with i'm hearing possibly five or six suspects earlier on today over all in the 1300 block of tualami. there was a possible armed robbery. we understand officers may have followed those suspects to this area here at castle wood drive and springs road where they ran inside this house. and have since been hold up in the middle of this stand off. if we can come back out live, the sun has started to go down. the smoke has dissipated. it looks like it's almost gone away entirely. after this fire happened here at this house. but we have a quick chance to ask an officer is this thing over and he said no. so we're still monitoring this stand off. there's still a lot of information to gather and we're going to bring it to you in the next half hour as we get it. we also have developing news in san jose a person has been killed in what appears to be a tree trimming accident. this is video taken by ktvu at

about 4:30 this afternoon. it happened east of reed hill view airport and the capital expressway. police responded to the scene and blocked off a portion of the street for the investigation. after months of review investigators say a house fire that killed two san francisco firefighters was beyond their control. the june 2nd fire killed anthony valerio and vincent perez. john sasaki is live now with what fire officials say they've learned from the case, john. >> reporter: the fire department released this report this afternoon and it is notable for the details of that fire that killed two firefighters last june. but it's also notable because there's no one to directly blame for the deaths. for a couple of minutes flames erupted inside the home on berkeley way. vincent perez and tony valerio were inside when a window broke open allowing a rush of oxygen to heat that fire. that super heated part of the

home climbed to over 700 degrees killing the two men. i asked hayes white what if anything could have been done to prevent the deaths and we were told essentially nothing. >> we're well in the way to developing new policies that in some ways could have made a difference but basically you will find that the key factor was something that was a variable that we really had no control over and that was the failure of the window, on the back end of the floor where tony and vince were. >> reporter: cal osha did find blame and issued a fine. but her staff offered additional evidence and they believe the fine will be reduced. lastly coming back here live. i want to show you page 74 of the report where you can see photos of vince perez' equipment and how charred it

was. and the coat and pants to withstand temperatures of 400 degrees, this was $700, far too hot for the equipment. the san joaquin sheriff's office says specially trained dog led searchers to partially human skull. the remains may belong to chavelle weaver. a 16-year-old girl who vanished back in 1995. and a second search team is excavating a well near the san joaquin town of lindon looking for more remains. shermantine and herzog were suspected of several murders and they claimed to have kidnapped 9-year-old girl from hayward michaela garrett back in 1998. rita williams spoke to the

mother of michaela garrett who says she believes her daughter is still alive. >> reporter: you can just imagine what kind of a difficult day this is for the mother of missing michaela garrett as investigators dig up remains that might be her daughter. >> i don't think it's michaela. >> reporter: just a few hours ago, garecht told me she does not think it's the remains of her daughter. that's after shermantine said he thinks that herzog may have killed the 9-year-old. >> he just said that herzog looks like our composite which it does. >> reporter: late last summer, hayward police allowed me to company merge this is what's called here inside the police station michaela's room. file drawers full of more than 13,000 leads that might hold the key to find her. her picture peaks out

everywhere. >> it's helpful to be in here to see all of this that is still being done on michaela's behalf. >> reporter: then phillip garrido, jaycee dugard's captor was a prime suspect. but not know she told us today. >> they have been investigated, they have been cleared. >> reporter: she said she went into a deep depression then but now believes again that michaela is alive and that she will be found this year. >> if all i had with michaela right now is hope and i don't want to give it up. >> reporter: if she is still alive as her mother believes, michaela garrett is 33 years old. reporting live in hayward, rita williams, ktvu channel 2 news. officials have put eight employees of a redwood city school on administrative leave

following the arrest of a teacher accused of abusing two students. last week a special education preschool teacher at redwood city elementary school was charged with hitting two 5-year- old students. parents at the school today said they were surprised and angry. >> when you have a kid at school you trust the teachers and if someone wants to become a teacher they also have to think about the consequences and what they're getting into. especially with special needs kids. >> reporter: an investigation will determine whether those school employees reported the abuse as required. -- police released the first of its kind video helping gay, lesbian and transgender youth. >> reporter: the san francisco police department has released an eight minute video for the it gets better project. in the video, members of the department talk about being a part of the lgbt community.

and not to a separate account. california's grape harvest took a hit because of cold weather. the 2011 harvest was down 20%. the reduced supply means increased prices. napa county recorded the highest prices for grapes up 5% from a year before. we will walk you through an ambush on a livermore police officer that was launched from this railroad overcrossing. also we are staying on breaking news in vallejo. police are surrounding a home there where armed robbery suspects are believed to be inside in the last 15 minutes, smoke coming from that home has dissipated. we have a crew on the scene and we'll bring you an update. i'm back here in just 10 minute, your weekend is here and there's some rain drops in the forecast. i'll show you which day in the weekend is going to be the driest.

we want to bring you up to speed on the breaking news we've been bringing to you. the story started about 4:00 p.m. with an armed robbery. police then began chasing five to six suspects to this neighborhood, castle wood drive and springs road just east of interstate 80. there was a stand off then around 5:35 or so a fire broke out at the house that police had surrounded. as you can see from these live pictures, bringing you from news chopper 2, firefighters now on the roof of that house as they look to extinguish the flames there. we have ktvu's eric rasmussen following the story there. if we get new details we will bring them to you.

a man who threatened people with a gun near an elementary school is mentally ill. police say christopher trend fired shots near river side elementary school in san pablo on tuesday. the school was then put on lock down and tren was arrested. tren has significant psychiatric issues. he now faces three charges of attempted murder. lynne creek said they arrested three people. police say a man who lives on sunny vale avenue saw a man stealing his car this morning. two suspects including a 17- year-old girl were arrested during a traffic spot. a livermore police officer fell into a trap when someone blocked a road with a concrete barrier then threw rocks on him as he tried to clear the road. christien kafton live at the scene with how the officer was ambushed. >> reporter: right now we're in

livermore and this was the weapon of choice. you can see rocks like these, thousands of them line the railroad tracks here on this overpass. at this point it's not clear if the officer was the intended victim of this ambush. but about a dozen rocks just like that one were thrown down at the officer on the road below. this afternoon livermore police recreated the ambush with a patrol car. the photographer snapped shots while investigators searched for suspects. police say at about 2:30 a seven year veteran officer found a large chunk of concrete on the roadway. when he got out of his police officer, someone struck. >> within seconds of being out of the car, several rocks and cement were being thrown at him. >> reporter: one large rock fell on the officers head and he called for back up. but by the time other officers showed up, the suspects had walked away. neighbors walked by the

evidence markers and say they hope police catch whoever layed that track. >> this side of the train tracks does, there's sirens from back here often. >> reporter: vandals and drug users routinely cut holes in the fences in the area looks for places to hide out. he spent his afternoon repairing a fence to his storage facility and a large hole leading directly to the train tracks. he says it's a constant battle. >> to keep people out. you know it was cut. we want to keep people out. down here. the backside. they cut it, we fix it. >> reporter: livermore police are not releasing the officers name. he is on medical leave. now late this afternoon, livermore police tell us they are offering a $2,000 reward for information in this case. christien kafton, ktvu news. supporters of the measure that would scale back the state's spending limit are now collecting signatures to get it

on the november ballot. it would require state and local government to allocate tax revenue that exceeds a certain amount to repay state debt. the walnut creek city council has picked a developer to transform a sought after piece of downtown real estate. the northwest corner of the mount diablo boulevard and main street has been a parking lot for years. city officials today said they are awarding a deal to build on that land to walnut creek based bh development. the company plans to build a new store and restaurant with a rooftop terrace. hundreds of job seekers converged on a job fair in oakland this afternoon. more than a thousand people lined up outside the training and education center for the 12th annual city diversity career fair. organizers say being proactive is key in today's job market. >> you've got to be agile, you just can't go to the job board and send in your resume, they are not going to come to your house, knock on your door and drag you out to jobs. you have to get out there, meet people, network and get back to

work. some of the past and current employers at today's job market job fair included uc berkeley, delta dental and verizon wireless. it's time to get a check on the weather: and a lot of people want to know what it's going to be like for the chinese parade tomorrow. >> there's lots of other stuff going on in the bay area and there's some sprinkles in the forecast. you know how today looked, that's what it's going to be like tomorrow morning. some of that blue sky right there that will show through as well. the weekend is going to be a mix of clouds and maybe a few sprinkles. maybe tomorrow morning a few sprinkles. as we head into sunday, sunday night we get back into the sprinkles. so in between, you're in good shape. what you notice today way cooler out there. temperatures got down into the 50s. yesterday temperatures were in the 60s and 70s.
