stick around, coming up! good morning, everyone. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, february 11th. i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. we did have light rain overnight. let's check with your forecast. >> good morning to you! we're waking up it soggy weather once again. take a look at the satellite radar. you can see this storm primarily moving city as it moves inland but we're dealing with drizzle and do have a few isolated showers in the forecast. we expect to dry out in time for your afternoon. what you can expect and expect, coming up. police are looking for six robbers who gave them the slip in a fiery standoff. flames and smoke slot out of this home. police insist they did not start the fire. allie rasmus joins us live from outside the house this morning with the latest. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. team members shot teargas into the home but police say that's

not how the fire here started. they don't know how it started. and arson investigation is underway. but the house where the standoff and the fire happened, you can see, is still stand this is morning. the front window boarded up and there's a little smoke damage visible above the window there. but this was the scene here 5:00 yesterday, black smoke billowed out of the roof of the home. the house was surrounded by s.w.a.t. team members. police came to the home looking for six armed robbery suspects. police say the suspects robbed and beat up a man who was responding to a bogus craigslist ad. the robbery victim called police, and police spotted a car connected to the suspects parked in front of home and an officer reported seeing the six suspects walking towards this home. that's when the s.w.a.t. team arrived and the standoff began after police tried to make contact with someone inside and got no response to. at some point during the afternoon, during the standoff, the fire started inside the home. i'm not exactly sure what

started the fire. something obviously from inside the house ignited and we don't foe what that is. >> after the fire police went into the home and discovered no one was inside. they don't know how the suspects got away or if they were even there in the first place. this morning there are still many unanswered questions. police don't know for sure if any of the five suspects, six suspects, lived in the home, what their connection was to the house, but police say there was no sign of forced entry and back here live, we look at the front door. the front door at least doesn't look like it was busted open. i contacted police and spoke with lieutenant park. he says that detectives and arson investigators are working the case but won't likely have any new information until monday or tuesday of next to week. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. in overnight news, a man is dead after an apparent drive by shooting in pleasant hill. it happened after 10 last

night. investigators believe a group drove up and shot at people outside a home. several shots were fired, one man was hit and died at the scene. his name is withheld until his family is notified. no one else was hurt witnesses say a blue saturn raced from the scene. police are trying to piece together what led to a shooting in antioch last night. officers received a report of gunfire near a home on the 2200 block of sycamore. when they arrived they found a man who was shot in the head. he was airlifted to john muir medical center. authorities don't have any suspects. a woman walking across a street was hit by a car and killed last night in san jose. it happened just after 8:30 in the evening. police say the female victim was jaywalking across meridian avenue when an acura hit her. the driver stopped and is cooperating with the investigation. this is the city's third traffic fatality this year. the search resumes this morning for a contra costa county man who disappeared last

month. 66-year-old angelo lucido was reported missing by his family on january 27th. several searches have been conducted but there's no sign of him. the family says he may be suicidal. today's search will focus in crock the and rodeo. this weekend sheriff's deputies will continue to search for the remains of dozens of bodies believed to be the victim of two serial killers. today search teams will focus on the town of lynden, just east of stockton. since thursday, two human skulls have been found near san andreas. they were found on property previously vend by wesley sherman teen, one of the convicted killers. he is paid by bounty hunter to reveal where the victims are buried. police say in the 80s and 90s, he and herzog killed dozens of people residents hope the searches bring closure to the families. >> it's huge for the town. definitely. it was a major story. never really went away.

people are very aware of it. >> today sheriff's deputies will search wells in the town of lynden. they dumped a number of bodies in one of those wells and then covered them with dirt. he is currently on death row. herzog was paroled in 2010 and he killed himself last month. shermanteen also claims to know what happened to a bay area girl who disappeared in 1998. she was 9 when she was kidnapped outside a hayward store. he says his herzog killed and buried her, but her mother has doubts about any connection between her daughter and the two killers. >> i don't think he has claimed to have any direct knowledge of mikayla's case, and because of that i'm doubtful that he will be able to lead them to her. >> her mother says she still believes her daughter is alive and will be found. today she would be 33 years old. santa clara leaders are pledging to open the new 49ers

stadium in 2014, a year earlier than scheduled. the mercury news reports a construction firm could start building in the next few months. that means the 49ers would only play two more seasons at candlestick park. santa clara officials are expected to approve the billion dollar construction deal this tuesday. toll takers at the golden gate bridge could be out of jobs as soon as december. that's when there will be a soft launch of an electronic touring plant. according to the ij, motorists will need fastrak or set up a tread or debit card account, other-wise cameras are take a picture of their license plate and they'll be sent a bill. phasing out the toll takers will help solve its $87 million budget deficit over the next five years. other local spans such as the richmond-san rafael bridge are looking at eliminating toll takers. we have some wet roads this morning, how long will that

rain last, rosemary? >> watching it for us -- good morning are you! what we saw yesterday, just hit or miss showers this morning. some not even picked up by radar. it will cause a little too low but drizzle is falling on the coastline and will continue this pattern for the next few hours giving you a live look outside, the sun now rising, the skies a little brighter. but most of us dealing with gray skies. they will turn to partly cloudy by the afternoon. we will see improving conditions. take a look at storm-tracker 2. hard to pick up anything out there. but we are still getting signs of little bit of light drizzle, few scattered showers, some of those clouds too low for the radar. 48 degrees right now santa rosa. low 50s san jose. many of us in the 50s and mid to upper 40s, warmer than yesterday. so relatively mild outside. winds are generally light but plenty gray. and the satellite radar will show you a bit more of what is going on. the system here that will continue to migrate east over the next few hours primarily to the south of us will be sliding

into the san joaquin valley in the next to few hours. we will continue with just the possibility of a few light scattered showers, little bit of wrap-around moisture, and that is going to linger into the early afternoon before we finally get rid of this system. take a look at the forecast here. so we've got gray skies, little light rain being pulled up here. by noontime, still dealing with a few isolated showers, possibility over the north bay, maybe near san rafael and most of it to the south of us. and it will again be moving east as well. by tomorrow morning we're looking at dry conditions, we will wake up with a little patchy fog, most of sunday is dry but a little beefier system coming in sunday evening, north bay could get wet by looks like a dinnertime, later than that. then into the overnight hours and scattered showers in the forecast for monday. but getting back to today, just those light showers remaining through the morning hours, and then we will turn partly cloudy for the afternoon. upper 50s, low 60s in the forecast, could be a little breezy at times. winds between 10 and 15. for most of us, 20 miles per

tonight's celebration the largest outside of asia begins at 5:30. more than 100 groups are participating, and one million people are expected to attend. that parade begins at second and market streets. it will turn down geary to union square, and then continue to powell and then post. finally, it will head down kearny street to columbus avenue, where it will end. celebrate the year of the dragon ahead of the parade. 23rd annual chinatown community fair is this morning. you can enjoy dance and music from throughout asia and experience ancient and modern chinese art and kite making. that fair is 10 a.m. until 4:30 this afternoon. then again tomorrow, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. several chinatown streets will be shut down. if you cannot make it out to the parade, you can catch it all right here on ktvu. we'll begin broadcasting the parade at 6 p.m. i know all of us will be out there. >> that will be fun! start off early in the afternoon and go from there!

>> congress needs to stop this middle-class tax hike from happening. period. no drama, no delay, and no ideological side issues that have nothing to do with the tax cut. now is not the time for self- inflicted wounds to our recovery. >> the president went ton to say this morning americans should pick up their phone, send a tweet or e-mail their congress person to make sure another extension happens. congress originally extended the payroll tax cut for two months in december, after a big partisan fight. we are also learning more this morning about president obama's proposed budget for 2013. it includes a $901 billion deficit, but that's only if the bush tax cuts for wealthy americans are allowed to expire at the end of the year. there are other spending cuts, including that $360 billion cut from medicare and medicaid over 10 years. and a $500 billion cut in defense spending. more details will be released by the white house on monday. maine's week long g.o.p.

presidential caucuses wrap up tonight, and mitt romney is hoping to avoid a fourth defeat in a row. the former massachusetts governor lost to rick santorum in missouri, minnesota, and colorado earlier this week, and while santorum and newt gingrich have all but bypassed the maine caucuses, political analysts say texas congressman ron paul poses a significant threat. >> right now it's a race between the two of them in the state of maine. so four years ago romney won our president am polls. so we'll see what happens. ron paul is very organized, but romney has his group of people together. too. >> if romney loses in maine, really small turnout, it will be perceived as he is really losing support among republican activists and is his candidacy in real trouble. if he wins, it's going to be a question of did he win by enough? >> the g.o.p. race takes a quiet turn after today. the next congress tests are not for another two weeks. those will be held in arizona and michigan. conservative political action

conference or cpac will wrap up today in washington with a g.o.p. presidential straw poll. and three of the major candidates spent yesterday trying to get some support. >> we need someone who is willing to go outs on big issues of the day and draw contrasts. we're not going to win this election, ladies and gentlemen, because the republican candidate has the most money to beat up their opponent and win the election. >> fresh off his triple win in colorado, missouri and minnesota, rick santorum used his speech yesterday to go after former front-runner mitt romney, but romney made his own subtle criticism. >> i don't have all scores to settle. or decades of deals that i have to defend. and let me tell you, any politician that tries to convince you that they hated washington so much that they couldn't leave, well, that's the same politics who will try to sell you a bridge to nor where. >> newt gingrich said, we need

to teach the republican establishment a lesson. texas congressman ron paul did not attend the conference. outside cpac a large scuffle broke out between washington, d.c. police and occupy protestors. this is video shot on a cell phone, not quite clear what led up to the scuffle but police did take at least one person into custody. no word on any injuries. a newly discovered video reveals the chaos and the confusion among crewmembers of the costa concordia in the hour after it ran aground after the coast of the italy. show you that video. it shows the command center on the ship's bridge. at first things appear to be calm. but about a half hour later, the panic sets in with a captain calling for the crew to abandon ship. as crewmembers make their way outside the ship is already tilting at a 20-degree angle. the video also shows frantic passengers boarding lifeboats.

17 people died in the shipwreck and 15 are still missing. the new year's eve is honoring gabrielle giffords by naming a ship after her. she and her husband went to the pentagon for the announcement yesterday. giffords is still recovering from being shot in the head in tucson last year. the navy says she is an inspiration who represents the navy's quality of overcoming great challenges. a camp pendleton had marine is being honored for his service in afghanistan. he received a silver star, the third highest medal for valor in combat. lasts year at age 22, he led his infantry unit through a six- hour firefight with the taliban. he is praised for his leadership, judgments if dedication. right now he is a drill instructor. his nickname is the prodigy and he's another a a thorough and thoughtful leader. a group of children with the 4h club plan to erect a memorial park for fallen soldiers in solano county. the memorial will be built on

an empty lot next to the fairfield armory. the park will be named after sergeant isaac lawson, who was killed in iraq in june of 2006. the students are now collecting donations and yesterday they received piping that will be used for the sprinkler system. the park is part of a club project. >> have other families be here that know what they're going through. >> here lies our dependent on what the guy next to to you will do. you develop a bonds that's even closer than your family sometimes, and then to lose someone from that bond, it's just devastating. >> lawson's bronzed helmet and boots will be the centerpiece of the memorial. the students still need to raise about $300,000 and hope to break ground in april. a funeral will be held today for two young boys killed when their father blew up his home. five-year-old braden and 7-year- old charlie were killed last sunday in a fire set by their father josh powell.

powell was a person of interest in the disappearance of his wife two years ago. a controversial kansas church has cancelled plans to protest today's funeral. the founder of the baptist church said he cancelled the protest after getting rain interview on a syndicated radio show. the group was planning to attend the funeral as a protest against the pending legalization of gay marriage in washington state. that led to a backlash including a biker group in occupy seattle who said they would block the protestors if they showed up. the los angeles school district is hit with another teacher sex scandal. 50-year-old paul william chapel was arrested last year on 15 counts of child molestation. the alleged victims are three girls and a boy all younger than 14. parents say they are furious that they are just now being notified of the arrest. >> older teachers are really good, but then -- you think you're going to trust your

of elaborate floats. there was also a marching band, lots of beads and even some toys for the children. the greatest part of the festivities leading up to fat tuesday, which is on february 21st this year. carnivale celebrations will go on as schedule indeed rio de janeiro despite a police strike in that city. hundreds of thousands of people flooded the streets for a pre- party yesterday. the main event is not until next saturday, and police officers are striking because they say they want a pay raise. but the union says it should still have about 30% of its officers active. the military is also on standby to help if necessary. icy roads are blamed for a pile-up in michigan involving 65 cars. a school bus was involved in the crash. one witness said the scene looked like a war zone. no one was hurt but as you can see several cars and trucks were smashed up. clearing the scene was another challenge because there weren't up in tow trucks to haul away the disabled cars. here at home forecasters say we shouldn't expect any

major winter storms, and that trend could continue through march. they say pattern is shifting but there are few signs that any storms could save the ski season. right now tahoe highways major ski resorts still don't have all of their terrain open. most are busy thanks to snow machines. tahoe officials say business is slipping at resorts but money is still coming in from tourists taking advantage of the warm weather, producing such as kayaking and paddleboarding. >> i had the windshield wipers going yesterday and seems we'll have to get those things going again tomorrow. is that the case, rosemary? >> yes, that there be the case. we'll see more rain in the forecast, a few light showers this morning, and looks like a better shot coming sunday night into monday morning. and if we have to deal with the rain, and we need the rain of course we could at least get a little more. we haven't seen much. look at storm-tracker 2. not a lot falling. just a little bit of drizzle. so much rain have we picked up in the last 24 hours and?

an armed robbery, a police standoff and then a house fire. when the smoke settled, the suspects were gone. and this morning the search for them is still underway. good morning, everyone. welcome back to mornings on 2. police say six men used a craigslist ad to lure their victims to vallejo home where he was beaten and robbed. police thought they tracked the suspects down, but that wasn't the case. allie rasmus joins us live in vallejo with what happened and the continuing search this morning. >> reporter: what brought police to this house here was that police saw a car that was connected to those six armed robbery suspects, parked in front of the home, and that's why they came here. an officer reported seeing those six people walking inside this small house on castlewood drive. police and a s.w.a.t. team surrounded the home and police used a loud speaker to try to make contact with anyone inside. they got no response and that's when the standoff began.

this is what it looked like when the scene unfolded yesterday afternoon. at some point police heard popping, crackling noises and noticed a fire had started inside the house. black smoke billowed out of a hole in the roof, and out of the chimney. after the fire police went into the home and discovered no one was inside. at this point police say they don't know how the suspects got away or if they were even here in the first place. >> there's always a possibility that the suspects fled prior to the police arrival. we believe that they were inside the house at the time we set up. >> this morning there are still many unanswered questions. police don't know for sure if any of those six suspects lived in the house. what their connection was to the home. but police say there was no sign of forced entry. a few neighbors have said they thought a woman and her daughter lived in the house on castlewood drive. police did shoot teargas into the home during the standoff but say that's not what started the fire. the suspects are still on the

loose and while the investigation to find the suspects continues, investigation of what happened here continues, there's also an arson investigation that will be underway. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. a vallejo police officer has recorded a song to honor a colleague killed in the line of duty. ♪ ♪ >> 45-year-old officer jim capoot was shot and killed in november. the song won't be forgotten was written by a vallejo police corporal. it's been posted on youtube can be downloaded for 99 cents. proceeds will go to capoot's family trust. a new book about the murder of chance i bailey is taking a close look at the events that led up to his death. the book which was released on tuesday is called killing the messenger, a story of radical faith, racism, backlash and the assassination of a journalist.

it details bailey's investigation on to -- into black muslim bakery and its leader and talks about the alleged mistakes by oakland police that could have played a part in his murder. san francisco police are cracking down on one neighborhood. they say it's a hot spot for the sale of prescription drugs. we followed police as they focused on a small part of the tenderloin district. police say dealers are filling prescriptions at local pharmacies and heading out to the streets to sell the pills. they say part of the motivation is the high number of children who live in the area. >> they deserve at the very least to live in the neighborhood where they can feel safe. so whatever the police are doing to do that, i'm for it. >> this takes making arrests and doing bursts like this to clean up the streets, we'll do it. we're not going to give up. >> police say filling prescription drugs can be -- for as much as crack and heroin. and they say undercover officers busted about three people in 45 minutes. they also say that number would be higher if they didn't have a

stop and complete the necessary paperwork. show you video of a drug raid at a home on san jose's tully road. yesterday morning police surrounded that home and ordered everyone inside to leave. police arrested one man as he walked out. police say they got a large amount of marijuana that could sell up to $40,000 on the street and found several guns, 1500 bucks in cash and nine pit bulls. a saxophonist who serenaded bart passengers in san francisco has been arrested in an albuquerque, new mexico cold case. ronald brewington is charged with shooting to death a 37- year-old woman in 1987. although he was using an alias, he was commonly referred to as the jazz man. even passed out christmas cards to bart leaders. a new report is detailing the final moments of two firefighters last year. they were killed while battling a fire in the city's diamond heights neighborhood. a report says a large window in

the house blew out, sending in a rush of oxygen that turned the small fire into an inferno. it says temperatures reached 700 degrees and the extreme heat melted the men's radios. it's still unclear when the radios failed. >> we'll never know because we don't have vince it tony here. we do know there were three attempts to contact vince and tony prior to that window failure, which we feel led to the fatal event, and eventually, and four attempts after that. >> in december state investigators fined the don't $21,000 for what it called serious worker safety violations during the incidents. the city's fire chief disagrees with all of one of the state's findings that vince and tony should have had properly backup. the chief is now pushing for national standards for hand- held radios. santa rosa police are investigating a suspected drug poisoning at a middle school. yesterday about 1:30 p.m., five

students became sick. police believe they came in contact with thc, a chemical derived from marijuana. one student put the drug in a bottle of gatorade and shared it with friends. the students reported feeling dizzy and suffering from stomach pains. a bay area mother could face child endangment charges after police say she left her 11 week old twins in the car to go shopping. a woman has been identified as 46-year-old amanda of danville. she was arrested on wednesday at the mall in pleasanton. officers say another shopper found the woman's two babies alone in a car inside a parking lot. and security footage shows the mother was in the mall for at least 40 minutes. the babies have now been released to their father. there's more fallout in the case of a special education teacher arrested on child abuse charges in redwood city. 43-year-old woman was taken into custody last saturday for striking two students at roosevelt elementary. the parents of a five-year-old autistic boy claim they complained to the school district months earlier but

were ignored. the district says it takes all allegations seriously. officials have placed eight teachers and aides on leave. an attorney for the parents accuse the school for failing to report abuse charges. some students at one east bay high school say they need more rest rooms. mourn diablo high in concord has just one bathroom open for 1400 students. but the principal just opened a second set of boys and girls rest rooms this week. the principal closed the rest rooms at first, due to vandalism. students tell the time the lack of facilities violates state regulations. officials from three east bay cities are joining forces to tackle resident complaints. on thursday the city councils of lafayette, moraga and orinda met to discuss topics such as a new park is lot, use of city funds and crumbling roads. the number one concern was the state of the roads and people in orinda would vote for a half cent sales tax increase to fill potholes. some people aren't happy,

city, you have to -- that will be fine and as normal. >> that's correct. so basically, eastbound traffic heading out of san francisco will be allowed to -- on the bridge. if those of you living on treasure island, you will be able to use the westbound direction just heading into the city. but again, it's closed coming out of the east bay. >> so couple things to worry about. we had rain this morning and that's your one thing that could change things, right? they can't do this if it's -- starts raining for some reason? >> absolutely. that is our biggest challenge this time. and that's where i'll be knocking on the door saying hey, if we have to delay, we're going to center to get message out quickly. if we do see rainstorm coming in, we won't be able to do this work. we would be pushing to the next weekend. if we get in the middle of the work and it starts dunking on us and we can't do the striping because it's so important, we'll have to delay the opening of the bridge as well. >> obviously, you always pick these holiday weekends because the traffic is light and you set those four days all the way through to kind of get the work done. usually hope to open a little ahead of schedule so hoping for

family is notified. no one else was hurt. witnesses say a blue sat earn raced from the scene after the shots were fired. police are trying to piece together what led to a shooting in antioch around 9 last night. officers received a report of gunfire near a home on the 2200 block of sycamore. when they arrived, they found a man who was shot in the head. he was airlifted to the medical center. authorities say they do not have any suspects. oakland police are investigating an early morning shooting that left one woman dead and a man in critical condition. police received reports of a shooting near 35th and allendale after this morning. a woman was pronounced dead at the scene and a male victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition. no suspects information is available. vallejo police looking for two armed robbers who gave them the slip during a fiery standoff. officers surrounded a home at castlewood drive in springs road yesterday afternoon. the armed men placed a craigslist ad and lured the victim to a place on north camino alto. police say the robbers then

beat the individual and fled. officers tracked them to a home on castlewood drive. a s.w.a.t. team later fired nonflammable teargas into the house. officers then heard what sounded like gunshots inside and saw smoke coming from the roof. firefighters put out the flames but when they did after go inside, the robbers were gone. >> this is completely crazy. this doesn't make any kind of sense. >> at this point the investigation is still underway. i'm not sure what started the fire. something obviously from inside the house ignited. >> police say they are adamant teargas didn't have -- did not start the fire and officers did not fire their weapons. detectives are trying to determine if there's a connection to the robbers and the homeowner. the robbery victim identified as a male from out of town was the only person heard suffering a head injury. allie rasmus is talking to neighbors and will have another live report coming up at 8:30. san jose police are investigating the death of a woman who was hit by a car.

that happened just after 8:30 lasts night. police say the female victim was jaywalk, across meridian avenue when an acura hit her. the driver stopped and is cooperating with the investigation. this is san jose's third traffic fatality this year. a saxophonist who serenaded bart passengers in san francisco has been arrested in an albuquerque, new mexico cold case. ronald brewington is charged with shooting to death a 37- year-old woman in 1987. although using an alias he was referred to as the jazz man. he even passed out christmas cards to bart riders. the search resumes today for a missing man from crockett. he was reported missing by his family on january 27th. the sheriff's department has searched for him several times but haven't turned up any traces. his family says he may be suicidal. today's search will focus on a crockett and rodeo. maine's week long g.o.p. presidential caucuses wrap up

coming up in about 11 minutes the candidate who used his speech to go after a rival. santa clara city leaders are pledging open the new 49ers stadium in 2014, a year earlier than scheduled. mercury news reports a construction firm could start building in the next few months. that would mean the 49ers would only play two more seasons at candlestick park. santa clara officials are expected to approve the billion dollar construction deal this tuesday. toll takers at the golden gate bridge could be out of jobs as soon as december. that's when there will be a soft launch of an electronic tolling plant. according to the marin ij, motorists will need fast track or set up a credit or debit card account. otherwise cameras will fake a picture of the plate and then a bill will be sent to their home. golden gate bridge district says phasing out the toll takers will help solve its $87 million budget deficit over the next five years. other local spans such as the richmond-san rafael bridge are also looking at eliminating toll takers. the finishing touches are put together for tonight's

icy roads are being blamed for a pile-up involving 65 cars in michigan. a school bus was one of those many vehicles involved in the crash yesterday. one witness said the scene looked like a war zone. fortunately, no one was seriously hurt. but as you can see, there were a lot of cars and trucks that were smashed up, and clearing the scene was another challenge. there weren't enough tow trucks to haul away the cars. eight people were rescued from an icy river in wisconsin yesterday morning. the group was fishing when the ice broke free and floated away

was involved in a stabbing of four men outside a wedding reception last month. the group was leaving the reception on main street before 11: 30 on the night of january 28th. the group of young latino males approached a group and police say one or more of them stabbed four men. yesterday morning police arrested a 17-year-old suspect who they know to be a gang member but investigators say they're still looking for other possible suspects. victims have all since been released from the hospital. last year lieutenant vincent perez a anthony valerio were killed battling a fire. the report says a large window in the house blew out sending in a rush of objection again that turned the small fire into an inferno. temperatures reached 700 degrees, and that extreme heat melted the men's radios. it's unclear when those radios failed. >> we'll never know because we don't have vince and tony here. we do know that there were

into monday. i will show you the latest models coming up. back now to our top story in vallejo and the search for six robberies suspects. officers tracked six suspects to a home on castlewood drive. after a standoff the house caught fire but the suspects got away. allie rasmus is live in front of the home where there are still a lot of unanswered questions. >> reporter: that home is on castlewood drive, this is it. after the standoff in the fire you can see the house where it happened is still standing. the front window boarded up and there's a little viz in smoke damage above the window but it was a different scene at 5:00 yesterday afternoon. that's when black smoke was scene billowing out of the roof and the home was surrounded by s.w.a.t. team members. police came to the house looking for six armed robbery suspects. police say those suspects had robbed and severely beaten a man responding to a bogus

craigslist ad. a short time later police spotted a car that fit the suspects' vehicle description parked in front of the house on castlewood drive. police tried to surround the home, make contact using a loudspeaker, but got no response. and that's when the standoff began. at some point in the afternoon a fire started inside the home. and caused the smoke you saw a minute ago. when the fire was over, police went into the home and discovered no one was inside. they don't know how the suspects got away or if they were even there in the first place. the six armed robbery suspects are still at large and some neighbors told us they're concerned about that. >> yes, but it's not like we didn't know there were guys like that running around. economy is rough. they're just trying to take advantage of they've ben hitting a lot of the businesses around here. >> this morning there are many unanswered questions. bless don't know if any of the six suspects lived in the

and s.w.a.t. teams had surrounded the area. we talked to a neighbor this morning who told us a young couple and their dogs had been renting the home for the past year where this all happened. did you ever notice any problems there? >> they seemed like a nice couple. they had a couple of dogs. never heard anything. >>reporter: police say one of the two dogs oed by that couple escaped the fire. the second one unfortunately died in the fire. this morning there's still many unanswered questions. police don't know for sure if any of the six suspects actually lived in the house, what connection they had to the home, if any. there was no sign of forced entry. police did shoot teargas into the home during the standoff, but they say they're confident that is not what started the fire. the suspects are still on the loose and an arson investigation is underway here. in the meantime, this is a residential neighborhood, onend there have been a lot of people

welcome back. new this morning, traffic still moving very slowly following a big rig crash in redwood city. the accident was first reported at 7:30. at least three other cars were involved and there are injuries. the accident may have been caused by a suspected drunk driver seen speeding right before the crash. a witness spotted the suspect's car at a jack-in-the-box nearby, but police still working to track down the driver. pleasant hill police investigating what they believe is a deadly drive- by shooting that happened just after 10:00

occupy protest. the group of protesters marched along market street and briefly blocked traffic at gary and powell at union square. the group also went into the westfield mallon market street. this weekend san joaquin deputies will continue to search for the remains of dozens of bodies believed to be the victims of two serial killers. since thursday two human sculls have been found. they were found on the property previously owned by one of the convicted killers. police say in the 80s and 90s they killed dozens of people. residents of the area say they hope the searches are going to bring closure to the families. >> i think it's huge for the town, definitely. it was a major story. it's never really went away. people are very aware of it.

lewd acts with children and another was released after posting $300,000 bail. santa rosa police are investigating a suspected drug poisoning case at a middle school yesterday afternoon. five students at santa rosa middle school got sick, and police say they believe they came in contact with thc, which is a chemical derived from marijuana. they say one student put the drug in a bottle of gatorade and shared it with friends and then reported suffering from stomach pain. a new report detailing the final moments of two san francisco firefighters. they were killed while battling a fire in the city's diamond heights neighborhood. the report says a large window in the house blew out sending in a rush of oxygen that sent the small fire into anointer know. the extreme heat melted the mens' radios. >> we'll never know because we don't have vince and tony here.

windows are shattered and partially boarded up, and inside the home is a total mess. there's a lot of smoke and water damage. the people who used to live here can't come back here. it's unlivable. police came here because they were looking for six armed robbery suspects. an officer reported seeing the six people walk into this house. they were wanted for beating up a man who had responded to a fake craig's list ad. that was around 2 p.m. yesterday when police surrounded the home. they tried to contact whoever was inside and got no response. they threw teargas in the house and at some point a fire started inside the home. now, after the fire police went into the house and discovered no one was inside. they don't know how the suspects got away or if they were even in the home in the first place. this morning the landlord was here taking measurements to board up the windows on the property. he says he had been renting the home to a couple in their 30s for the past five months and he says he's absolutely certain

underway to try to figure out what started this fire, and i did talk to police this morning, and they are not going to have any updates until monday at the earliest. . an accused serial killer is adamant he does not want a public defender, accused of killing four women between 1977 and '94. he insists that he wants to represent himself when the judge questioned him yesterday. he also said he would refuse the three best attorneys in the country even if he did not have to pay them a dime. he says he just wants to get the trial on the way. a police officer on medical leave after an apparent ambush, driving near the pea street underpass early yesterday morning when he came cross a large chunk of concrete in the road. he got out to clear the road when several attackers threw large blocks of cement at him. the officer was taken to the

let's move over to the bay bridge and take a look at traffic. could be a little slower this afternoon as people head into the city for the chinese new year's parade. things will be very different this time next week because one week from today those westbound lanes that you're looking at are all going to be closed as construction gets underway and they shift the traffic over to the new bay bridge. it begins at 8 p.m. friday february 17 until 5 a.m. tuesday, february 21. this morning right here on ktvu morning, we're told that the shutdown is happening so the agency can shift lanes coming out of the toll plaza to the south. >> they're going to be sliding to the south. what that will do is allow us to surgically remove a section of the existing bridge that's in the way of the new bridge. >> it will allow them to open
