. complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel. authorities found more human remains late today as they continue their grim dig for victims following a tip from a prison inmate. good evening, i'm ken wayne. >> i'm heather holmes. >> today's chilling discovery was made in the same remote area of san joaquin county, where detectives unearthed human remains in recent days of a convicted serial killer led authorities to this spot where he says a dozen bodies were dumped. ktvu's eric rasmussen now with information about where the remains were found today.

>> reporter: eer we are hearing that they are just wrapping up for the night you can still see the lights where they have been working here down the road a little weighs. that is where they have been searching all day and around 5:30 authorities confirmed they found pay porshe of a skull and bones buried about 35' keep in the same well where they found a woman's remains yesterday. digging continued well after dark in this remote part of san joaquin county with new urgency for the second day in a row investigators found remains believed to be human in an old well on this property. in all that is three victims in three days, turned up since authorities followed directions given by convicted serial killer wesley shermantine, who is still on death-row. >> that is what he was saying is, it's out here, so let's keep going. >> reporter: sacramento bounty hunter says he prosed to pay shermantine

where he and his childhood friend loren herzog buried their victims. >> how many bodies do you think are back there? >> i don't know if it's here, but i know the pair is responsible for 20-30 death. >> reporter: they were known as the speed killers until their capture in 1999 and they are suspected in the disappearance of a9-year-old from 1988. some hope that it can bring an end. >> my dad told me stuff, watch out. you just never thought they had this bad stuff go on out here. >> reporter: now until the latest discovery out hear this afternoon, there was some talk that authorities should be searching another well on the property. but certainly with the possibility of more remains to be found out here, the search

could continue through the weekend. eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. authorities have identified human remains in the sierra foothill as one of the shermantine's victims on thursday are those of 25-year-old cyndi vanderheiden. vanderheiden lived in of area and disappeared in 1988. authorities are working to identify another set of remains discovered in the same area. >> at 3:55 p.m. this afternoon whitney houston was pronounced dead at the beverly hilton hotel. >> sad news for the music industry as family, friends and fans mourn the sudden loss of singer whitney houston. ♪ oh, say does that star-spangled banger yet wave ♪ houston was none for her powerful port st. lucies,

back here. >> reporter: a sentiment shared bit neighborhood. >> in oakland police are investigating that city's 15th hold of the year. it happened just before 6:00 this morning in the parking lot of an apartment complex on 35th and allendale avenues. officers say when when they arrived they found a man and woman inside a parked car with gunshot wounds. the woman died there at the scene. the male victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition. no word tonight on arrests or motive. the latest occupy cal protest is holding strong tonight. seven tents are still set and the uc berkeley's sproul plaza. occupiers are calling for an end to tuition hikes at the university. they tell us that they are getting good feedback on the return. >> people are happy to see us back. and that makes it worth it in my mind. i'm glad that people are excited for us to return. >> campus police say they have

repeatedly asked demonstrators to clear out their camp because it's illegal to set up tents o campus. so far officers have not taken any action. occupy sf protester stopped traffic during a march through union square. dozens of demonstrators blocked the intersection of geary and powell streets before being cleared out by police. the group went into the westfield mall on market street. police say this were some could be frontations between officers and protesters. no one was seriously hurt. at left least one person was arrested, accusing of vandalizing a police car. in election 2012 news, mitt romney barry won the maine beat ron paul by 194 votes. rick santorum picked 18%, newt gingrich 6%. neither of those candidates campaigned there. earlier today, romney stresses his message that he is the one that can win

and share your thoughts by going to the ktvu channel 2 facebook page. to other news, dragons ruled the streets of san francisco. ktvu's jade hernandez is live in the city with highlights from this year's chinese new year's parade. >> reporter: we began this parade at 2nd and market and ended at union square where crews are working very hard to clean up after what some expect to be a chinese new year parade with attendance nearing half a million person. audrey vernick brought her sons to see mythical creatures up close. was it form you to see the chinese new year parade? >> yes. >> reporter: why was it important? >> because it's the year of the dragon. >> reporter: this particular one made it's debut, 168' long, a number symbolizing for the chinese continuous wealth and strength. >> we have the first asian- american mayor in the city and dragon year is supposed to be

year you might remember it was quite rainy back then. today everyone commented on how easy it was to get into the city and how much they enjoyed the beautiful weather reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu . >> besides being colorful the parade brings in a lot of business and we'll look at the economic effects coming up at 10:30. well it's a rush to the end zone for the 49ers. team is now aiming to play in santa clara as early as the 2014 season. santa clara's mayor says he has no doubt that the city can open the new stadium a year earlier than second. the nfl award $200 million fortune project last week and the contract for a new completion date of 2014 is up for approval tuesday before the stadium authority. the deal includes huge fines for each game the contractor misses if the stadium isn't ready to go in time. well a third american city

has entered the competition to host the 2022 winter games. all bets are underway in lake tahoe and denver and now salt lake city wants to be considered. it hosted the game ten years ago and still has the infrastructure to host the olympics. an elderly woman struck by a car is san josi's second traffic-related death within is it hours and fourth so far this year. county coroner's office identified the victim as 77 kim tran. say she was robbing near rock avenue when she was hit by a honda civic this morning. the driver stopped at the scene and is cooperating with police. police say there is no indication that the driver was intoxicated. last night another woman was struck and killed by a car also in san josi. police say she was jaywalking across meridian avenue at west san carlo street and was struck by an acura. investigators say that driver

also stopped and is cooperating. this woman's name has not been released. two people are recovering from minor injuries after a four-vehicle pile-up at redwood city on highway 101. the accident blocked all northbound lanes near whipple avenue for about an hour. the highway patrol says the driver of a pickup lost control while enter the freeway. a big rig then struck the pickup and ore turned. two other vehicles rammed right into the big rig. he is a little dog with a big story of survival. ktvu's noelle walker introduces us to van winkle, the family who brought it back to health and the efforts to find him a new home. >> reporter: kay and saffa's visit to oakland animal services is bittersweet. care-free cocker spaniel they have been fostering is going up for adoption. van winkel is special of his big paws mast a big heart with a capacity to love people despite an horrific past.

. vallejo investigators have yet to make any arrests in an armed robbery that led it a police sand standoff and house fire last night. ktvu's allie rasmus. >> reporter: he prepared to board up windows after a police standoff and fire happened here. he say their tenants are devastated. >> they lost everything. >> reporter: it started around 2:00 yesterday afternoon. police were looking for six armed suspects wanted for robbing a beating a man who responded to a bogus conversation ad. an officer reports seeing the six suspects walk into this home and a standoff ensued. a while later the fire started inside the house and vohra insists that

his tenants have no connection to the six people. >>. >> reporter: did they say they knew when the people were? >> no, they say they don't know anything. >> reporter: there are still many unanswered questions. what happened to the six suspects still on the loose? why did they come to the home and were they ever inside the house in the first place? >> we don't understand what is going on. it's very unusual. >> reporter: vallejo police say the fire was not caused by their tear gas canisters. this next door neighbor wants answers about what happened? >> something started that fire. there was no one in that house, man of the it's crazy. >> reporter: a jal vow police lieutenant told me fire investigator will determine how the fire began. so far no arrests have been made and police won't have any updates until monday. . in news of the world tonight in syria, government troops shelled buildings in the rebel stronghold of ho m's.

why. ana wong says the flood of customers couldn't control at a better time of year. >> january/february is a slow time of season in san francisco, so it's good to have something to do, you know? >> reporter: the influx of visitors is also music to the ears of hotels in the area. the chinatown hilton sits on the parade route and management here says a busy lobby means full rooms. >> it gets probably 99%, in terms of our occupancy. so that is the chinese new year coupled with a few other things going on in the city right now, but chinese new year's bumps it up. >> reporter: these two came from bogata, colombia and say not only are they watch, the parade, but will spend the weekend shopping. >> in colombia, the good brands are expensive. so it's better to buy here and spend the money here. >> reporter: we're talking about big bucks here. visitors we spoke with today

. well, we had some stubborn clouds across parts of the bay area and even lingering drizzle and a few sprinkles, but for the most part pretty quiet out there. live stormtracker 2, just a little bit of action showing offshore, but most of this should remain to our west and as a result, just some clouds building as we head into the overnight hours. the low clouds really thickening up over the past few hours. you can see with the sunset, around the coast and around the bay, overnight lows tomorrow morning will be in the upper 30s to the 40s. so pretty chilly out this with partly to mostly cloudy skies. some patchy fog. santa rosa, 38 and morgan hill at 40

degrees. there is another system developing in the pacific. you can count on more cloud cover and high clouds on the increase. there is that rain couldn't your, it will contour. this is not a major deal with rain expectations only a few hundredth of a inch and winds do crank up a bit tomorrow night into monday. could be from 20 to 30 miles per hour, especially as we head into monday. our rain, what little there is will be a snow producer and a winter weather advisory begins until 4:00 monday. snow levels come down to 4000'. tomorrow morning at 8:00, patchy fog and mid to upper clouds to start the day. notice by 3:00 the rain showers

approaching, but still some cloud cover out there. by this time tomorrow night the rainfall does pick up, but once again this is not a major storm. into monday we're going to hold onto position of a few lingering showers. the active begins to scoot to the south and east. temperatures for tomorrow afternoon, mainly in the upper 50s to right around the 60- degree mark. so a narrow range from 58-62 degrees. morgan hill around 62 and san mateo, 58. your five-day forecast with your weekend always in view, chance a shower into monday, mostly for the morning hours. another system we're going to be track and looks like timing we brick in a slight chance of showers by tuesday afternoon, but a better bet tuesday night and another break, looks like that for health and ken for wednesday and thursday. these all just classified as baby rain clouds and, in fact, next week could be fairly quiet
