whitney houston. good morning. welcome to mornings on 2 it's sunday, february 12th i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. rain on the way. let's dive into that forecast. >> we have the low clouds over head. and we will continue with the visibility dun to a quarter of mile in some areas as we mention we have rain arriving later today into the evening hours. i'll detail that and show you what you can expect coming up. more human remaybes have been unearthed in san joaquin county. ktvu allie rasmus is live by san quentin where she man tine is -- shermantine is being held. >> reporter: he is on death row

here at san quinn ten where -- san quentin where he has been for the last three decades. the latest was discovered yesterday afternoon. a skull and some bones were unearthed near a well in the town of lynn den. that is located nearstock ton -- near stockton. and bones were also discovered buried in the area. lynn den is where shermantine and his friend brew up. they are us a sus -- they are suspected of having 15-20 victims. the digging in the town of linden is supposed to resume later this morning. bounty hunter agreed to pay shermantine $30,000 on where

other victims might be buried. >> i'm glad we found remains. at least that keeps the police department interested. hopefully they will stay out here and check the other wells. >> reporter: he is still on death row. shermantine wants that $30,000 to go toward paying his restitution to buy head stones for his deceased parents and candy bars in prison. he committed suicide shortly after he was patrolled after he heard that shermantine was giving out information. >> shermantine is also claiming to know what happen to a bay area girl that disappeared back in 1988. shermantine and his former partner says his former partner

killed and buried makayla. but her more has any doubt. she believes makayla is still alive and will be found. the body of 48-year-old singer whitney houston arrived at the los angeles county morgue later this morning. according to tmz legal prescription drugs were in the room and her body was found in the bathtub. she had a large group of people with her including family and friends. it's unknown who discovered the body. >> fire department responded with hotel security. they found her unresponsive. they tried life saving resuscitation measures. unfortunately they were not successful. at 3:55:00 p.m. she was pronounced dead. >> she won six grammies, 30 billboard awords, and 22 music

awards. she famously battled a drug addiction and went to rehab twice. it was reported she was receiving out patient treatment for drug use. these are some of the last pictures of whitney houston alive. they were taken after she left a pregrammy party thursday night. houston also sang at the party in what will now be known as her last performance. >> there is an outpouring of grief of people following the death of whitney houston. meanwhile fans gathered at the beverly hills hotel where houston's body was found. >> it's devastating she is gone. she is one of the greatest singers of all time. i mean i have listened to her since i was a little girl. >> i'm venturing out to say this and may get slack. but there will never be another voice like that. >> plans are being made to honor houston at tonight's grammy awards. it will include a memorial performance by a former

cutting up and disposing that tree. there is allegations a broken sewer line near the home is responsible for the ground shifting and causing the tree to fall. oakland police have arrested two occupy protestors after a march in down. 50 people marched from frank ogawa plaza. after the march ended about 20 protestors angerly -- when things settled down police say a woman kicked a police sergeant in the leg while that woman was being arrested police say a man tried to pull her away. so he was also arrested. police say another protestor struck the sergeant in the head with a protest sign and ran off. the tents are still up at uc berkeley occupy cal camp. demonstrators have been at sprawl plaza since thursday. it has been three months since they were removed from violent confrontation with police. occupiers are calling for an end with tuition hikes. they are getting good feedback on their returns.

and as i talked about at the top of hour even patchy dense fog over parts of the north bay valley locations. calm conditions in santa rosa. ample moisture left over. light winds allowing for that fog to really become thick. we've got a southerly breeze over sfo. it's a light one. temperatures cooler than where we were yesterday. if you're getting outdoors early expect that. 46 in napa. anywhere from 4-6 degrees cooler in some cases. 48 livermore. 46 in san jose. areas around san francisco and oakland reporting upper 40s as well. the low clouds will be breaking apart but then we will see a different type of clouds that move in. the clouds that roll in ahead of the storm. we have the fog reports for you over the north bay. visibility down to a quarter of mile. reported near santa rosa and a half mile in some areas near napa. satellite and radar the next system already beginning to approach once we get rid of the low clouds. high clouds will begin streaming overhead.

it looks like by early evening maybe closer to sunset for parts of the north bay beginning to see the light scattered showers. this is a colder storm. dropping in from the gulf of alaska and that will bring snow to the sierra. that is great news. we are looking at your forecast here. mostly gray even ahead of the rain. it's about 5:00 or 6:00 this evening and we have a few light sprinkles across the area. the north bay looks pretty wide spread. that will continue through the evening hours. will it be dry for your monday morning commute? it looks like scattered showers will remain in the forecast not as steady as it will fall in the overnight areas. it will continue in fact. the possibility of lingering showers will be with us most of monday. in addition to that breezy conditions with this system so it's going to be breezy at times through the overnight hours. and the afternoon will be gusty. to sum it up a little patchy fog over the north bay valley locations. partly to mostly cloudy skies over the bay area and the rain will be us starting early

first lady michelle obama is celebrating the second anniversary of her let's move initiative. she made a stop at the walt disney world to promote fitness. she joined hundreds of kids and families. you can see dancing and jumping and they played physical games. disney stars and professal athletes were there trying to model healthy living. >> we are celebrating the second anniversary of let's move. i have been traveling all over the country. >> let's move through the first lady. it's a great way to get young kids moving in the house. >> florida was the last stop on the first ladies let's move tour. the program launched in 2010 to encourage children to lead healthier lives. people in chile also got a pretty good workout but this

at times it will be a bit blustering on monday. highway near cleveland, ohio is back open after a massive pile up. police say 25-50 cars were involved in that crash. it happened yesterday as a winter snow dumped several inches of snow in that area. no one was seriously injured but that road was closed for several hours. last years untimely rain and late freeze had a large impact on wine country. the crush report shows grape tonnage dropped from 3% down to 3.9 million tons throughout at state. without fewer grapes prices jumped. taking on film maker george lucas. what he wants to build in reason county and why homeowners there are fighting that plan. mourning whitney houston. the latest on the investigation to her death. >> plus more human remain haves

san juan keen county -- san joaquin county. it's the spot where a convicted serial killer said he dumped dozens of bodies. detectives dug up a skull and bones buried about 35 feet below. law enforcement officials say they believe the remains belong to a third victim of death row inmate wesley shermantine. shermantine is being paid $33,000 by bounty hunter larry to reveal where he and his childhood friend buried his victims. >> he gets $18,000 to pay his restitution. i gave him another $15,000 to buy headstones for his mom and dad. >> he offered the money to bring closure for the family of his victims. some of the remains found have

been positive identified as one of shermantine's victims. deputies say she is 25-year-old cyndi vanderheiden. she lived in the area and disappeared back in 1998. fans are mourning the death of lend dare singer withknee houston this morning. she was found dead last night in her l.a. hotel room. reporter casey is live in los angeles. what is the latest in this investigation? >> reporter: claudine, good morning to you. an autopsy must be scheduled. we are stabbing outside of the l.a. county coroners office where that will happen. officials are telling fox news channel today that the scheduling of it has not happened. but they do confirm they have taken custody of whitney houston's body. one of our producers just getting off the phone with the coroners office and they said they didn't expect any new information to be released today. so it is appearing the autopsy

might not even happen but could happen first thing tomorrow. remember it would take weeks before any kind of box cool reports -- toxicology reports would come back. let me run you through the timeline. 3:23 california time is when the call came in to 911 of an unresponsive person at the beverly hilton hotel where a big grammy preparty was supposed to be happening. called an unresponsive person on the first floor. that's when they realized it was whitney houston. they tried to perform cpr but were unsuccessful. 3:55 local time is when the legendary icon was pronounced dead. tmz is report nothing illegal drugs or alcohol were discovered in whit thee houston's hotel rooms. they did report a number of prescription drugs were found. police not confirming that information. >> i know it will be awhile before we know what caused her

death. certainly everyone looking at her final day tsz. what have you learned about that? >> reporter: thursday night was her last public appearance. she did an impromptu performance at a club in hollywood. she did her own rendition of jesus loves me. take a look at the amateur video. some there said that the performance was a mess that she did not look well and then in the wee hours another morning pop rat -- paparazzi snapping photos of her and friday night she was reportedly drinking with a large entourage at the hotel bar where again she was a best. people inside said that the crowds was very loud and very boisterous. that they were drinking heavily. and the very next day yesterday

is when the news broke that she had died. >> let's talk about the grammies too. we are hearing it will not be a full blown attribute but obviously they have to do something to address her career and contributions to the industry. >> reporter: yeah absolutely. you know the producers of that show were scrambling yesterday in addition to mourning. i mean whitney houston herself won many grammies through her career. and you know the executive producer of that show did talk about when the reaction came down of this news. take a listen of that. >> we are all pretty devastated. it hit us all pretty hard. we were in the middle of our rehearsal and the news started going around. so you know as you know she was very closely associated with the grammies. both as a performer and grammy winner. and a lot of us that worked on the show worked with her any number of times. it's a very sad day for us.

the two were married for 15 years before divorcing in 2007. they have one daughter together. we have a slide show of whitney houston throughout her career up on our website. of course you can find it at ktvu.com. let's turn to other news. oakland police arrested a man in connection with a hit and run crash that sent a woman to the hospital. witnesses say a red chevy suburban ran her down on splish national boulevard. she was reportedly in the crosswalk waving her arms and yelling for the driver to stop. police caught up with the driver a few blocks away and arrested him. he may face felony charges depending on the victims condition. san jose police are investigating two traffic related deaths within 12 hours of each other. the latest happened add 6:45 yesterday morning. 77-year-old lee was walking on rock avenue when she was hit by a car. her death came less than 12

hours after another woman was hit by a car. that driver also stopped. san jose has four traffic relate the deaths so far in 2012. a pareira collider is recovering after being rescued from a claim. that man was found 150 feet below the bluffs of mussel rock. he was take ton san francisco general hospital for evaluation. the entire rescue operation took about 2.5 hours. pleasant hill police say the first homicide there in two years was not a random attack. investigators say 21-year-old michael jones of san pablo was killed friday night. he was in front of a house around 10:00 p.m. when he was shot and killed in what witnesses described as a drive by. it has left neighbors a bit rattles. >> i was on top of a ladder trying to put the whole light fixture in and all i hear is boom boom boom.

>> hopefully they don't come back here. >> witnesses say a blue saturn raced from the scene after the shots were fired. so far no arrests have been made. in oakland police are investigating the city's 15th homicide of the year. a woman died and a man is in critical condition after someone fired a gun at them as they sat in a car together. it happened just before 6:00 yesterday morning outside an apartment complex on 35th and allen dale avenue. they do not have a motive for the shooting and no arrests have been made. the number of school age children in west oakland is on the decline. according to the oakland tribune residence of that area say they don't see many children playing in the streets or walking to school. that is because families are packing up and leaving for safer neighborhoods. and people were evicted from their homes. the trend appears to be spreading to the most major cities. state democrats will wrap

up their three-day convention today. jerry brown aaddressed attendees -- lieutenant governor gavin newsom in attendance. >> for democrats the priority is 25 seats in the house of representatives but also key seats in the state assembly to get to the two-thirds so we can deal with the big challenges we face in the state. >> this is the first time they held their convention in san diego. protestors are also the democratic convention in san diego including the group opposed to the national defense authorization act. it allows the federal government to detain people suspected of terrorism. >> this act which is now law guts the bill of rights. it guts the sixth amendment due process. this goes right to the heart of

american citizens basic fundamental rights. >> protestors say they are calling on democrats to help repeal the law. film maker george lucas wants to break ground on a major development near sky walker ranch by next year. plans for a $275,000 square foot building are in the works at the former brady ranch. it would house a production studio, outdoor sound stage and restaurant and guest houses. some people in that neighborhood are against that plan. it will cost too much traffic and noise. it will take up the issue at the end of this month. if you are just joining us. we've been talking about it this morning. rain is on the way. do you think that will translate into snow? >> absolute willly. sierra finally going to get a nice dose of snow. a foot will fall over the course of the next 24-36 hours. meanwhile here at home we are dealing with low clouds at this hour. those will be replaced by the high clouds that will eventually drop some rain.

and this morning temperatures are down anywhere from 2-4- degrees around the bay area. inland spots santa rosa and napa reporting seven degrees cooler. a chilly start if you are getting outdoors and could be a tough drive. dense fog advisory through 9:00 this morning. visibility down to about a quarter mile in some cases. in fact, santa rosa reporting down about an eighth of a mile. that is 660 feet in front of you before you hit a wall of fog. be careful out there. we have clouds associated with this next system beginning to approach the coast. by the afternoon we will be turning mostly cloudy. high clouds will be moving in to the afternoon. sprinkles will begin to fall. perhaps the peninsula and it will be sliding south throughout the evening hours. evening plans bring that umbrella just in case. forecast totals not a lot. these days we are taking what we can get. winds will also ramp up

allie rasmus is live. >> reporter: i just talked to the san joaquin county sheriff spokesman a short time ago. he said right now there are about 30 people from the sheriffs office and people from the california department of justice crime lab that are back at linden this morning. and the search for more possible victims continues. so far three sets of human remains have been found. in both calveras and san joaquin county. the latest was found yesterday afternoon. a skull and bones were unearthed near a well in linden. remains belonging to a 25-year- old woman and 16-year-old girl were also discovered. linden is where shermantine and his childhood friend grew up. in 1999 the two men were convicted of killing 20 people. the two men were convicted of

seven murders between them. but they are considered to have between 15-20 victims who's bodies were never found. >> they did bring out cadaver dogs which would help us indicate whether or not the bones we located whether they were human. and so that was kind of a preliminary confirmation. >> reporter: a bounty hunter agreed pay shermantine $30,000 for information on where other victims might be buried. after that he drew a map that supposedly details the locations of some of those unfound victims. shermantine is still on death throw here. she wants that $30,000 to pay for restitution, to pay headstones for his deceased parents and pay for candy bars in prison. he was also here at san quentin. he was patrolled and committed suicide last year when he heard shermantine was turning over

welcome back. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. that land is where he dumped dozens of bodies. ktvu allie rasmus is live outside san quentin prison. >> reporter: mike shermantine is on death row here. search for more of his victims continues. the san joaquin county spokesman says 30 members from his office and from the state department of justice crime lab are in the town of linden right now. that is where yesterday they discovered part of a skull and human bones near an abandoned well 35 feet below the ground. on thursday and friday nearby calveras county remains belonging to a 25-year-old woman and 16-year-old girl were discover the. the town of linden is where shermantine and his childhood friend loren grew up. they were called the speed freak killers because of their methamphetamine use.

a convicted serial killer is behind these discoveries. >> his name is wesley shermantine. he is on death row here at san quentin. the search for his victims continued in san joaquin county. the sheriff told me this morning that right now there are about 30 investigators from his office and from the state department of justice crime lab all in linden, very close to stockton. that's where yesterday investigators discovered part of a human skull and some bones near an abandoned well 35 feet below the ground. investigators are using a map wesley shermantine drew to search for the remains. so far the map appears to be accurate. on thursday and friday remains belonging to a 25-year-old woman and 16-year-old girl were discovered. in license len the excavator you see in the video is being used to unearth tons of dirt. this morning investigators are

carefully sifting through that dirt to search for more bone fragments. >> i imagine because of us having to slow it down and go through the debris, as fine as we are, it's going to take several days and maybe weeks. >> reporter: the town of linden is where wesley shermantine and his friend gree grew up. the men were convict find killing cell people in the 1980s and 1990s. they were called the speed freak killers because of their methamphetamine use. they were convicted of seven murders between them. they're suspected of having 15 to 20 victims whose bodies were never found. wesley shermantine's partner in crime was also imprisoned until he was paroled last year. he committed cd last year when he learned that wesley shermantine was giving out information on where the bodies were buried. the deputy sheriff said it's entirely likely that investigators will find more human remains at that site in

linden later today. back to you. so far only one set of remains has been positively identified as one of wesley shermantine's victims. the sheriff's deputies say dental records confirm a skull found belongs to 25-year-old cindy vannedderhyden. she lived in the area and disappeared in 1995. a castro valley family is working to remove a 15-foot tree that came on to tore driveway at a home on wilson avenue. the tree landed on two cars and took down a power line. pg&e and the fire department both responded to the scene. there were four people in the house at the time. it's not clear what caused that tree to fall. >> he seen the light flash like lightning. i thought it was raining. >> pg&e was able to fix the

power line. the family is now responsible for cutting up and disposing of that tree. there are allegations from some of the neighbors that a broken sewer line near the home is responsible for the ground shifting and causing the tree to fall. oakland police have arrested two occupy protesters after a march in downtown. about 50 people march trd frank ogawa plaza last night. after that march, 20 protesters confronted a highway patrol officer. after that a woman kicked a police sergeant in the leg. while they were arresting that woman, police say a man tried to pull her away. he was also arrested. another protester struck a sergeant in the head with the protest sign and then ran off. the tents are still up at uc berkeley's occupy cal camp. demonstrators have been there since thursday. it's been three months since that first camp was forcibly removed during violent confrontations with police. occupiers are calling for an end to tuition hikes at the

good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2". i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. continuing coverage this morning as the search for more victims of convicted serial killer wesley shermantine continues. so far three bodies in three days have been recovered. coming up, where investigators are looking and how many more bodies they could uncover. pleasant hill police say the city's first homicide in two years was not a random attack. investigators say 21-year-old michael de juan jones of san pablo was killed friday night. he was in front of a house around 10:00 p.m. when he was shot and killed in what witnesses describe was a drive-by shooting. neighbors are rattled. >> i'm trying to put the whole

investigating two traffic related deaths within twelve hours of each other. the latest happened at 6:45 a.m. yesterday. police say a 77-year-old woman was walking on oakland road near rock avenue when she was hit by a car. the driver did stop at the scene. her death came less than twelve hours after another woman was hit and killed by a car at meridian avenue and west can carlos street. that driver also stopped. a paraglideer is recovering after being rescued from a cliff. he was found 150 feet below the bluff which is in the area muscle rock in daly city. firefighters set up a rescue operation using a picket system to get to the victim. he was taken to the hospital for evaluation. the music industry is in mourning over the death of whitney houston. an ambulance carrying her body drove off from the beverly

this morning miles from here in san joaquin county. this is video of san joaquin county in the town of linden near stockton. that's where 30 investigators from san joaquin county sheriff's office and the california department of justice crime lab are this morning. it was yesterday at this site that investigators discovered part of a skull and human bones near an abandoned well 35 feet below the ground. investigators are using a map wesley shermantine drew to search for his victims remains. so far this map appears to be fairly accurate. on thursday and friday, in remains belonging to a 25-year- old woman and a 16-year-old girl were also discovered. back in linden the excavator you are seeing has been used to unearth tons of dirt. this morning investigators are carefully sifting through all that dirt to look for more bone fragments. >> it appears that it's highly likely we'll find more victims. we won't know he who we have or

where this investigation is going to take us. we'll continue our efforts here to gather as many human remains as possible so that ultimately we can bring them home to their loved ones. >> reporter: the town of linden is where wesley shermantine and his childhood friend grew up. the men were convicted of killing several people. they were called the speed freak killers because of their method mean use. they were convicted of seven murders between them. they're suspected of having many more victims, 15 to 20 victims, and many of those victims have never been found. wesley shermantine's partner in crime was in prison here in san quentin until he was paroled last year. he committed suicide last year when he learned that wesley shermantine was giving information on where the bodies were buried. the deputy sheriff says the search efforts that you see there in linden will continue today. they'll continue for the next several days, possibly for the coming weeks. back to you.
