valley. much, much cooler here. temperatures in the 40s. they will go down throughout the morning here as that coal air slides in and throughout the day it will be a very blustery and cool day. so colder and windy. scattered showers and some sun. it won't help much today. temperatures will be very cool. lots of 50s. here is sal. >> steve, good morning. traffic looks good around the bay area. as a matter of fact, we are doing pretty well. the roads are wet from the overnight rain. traffic looks good on the golden gate bridge. also this morning we are looking at windy commute on interstate 880. if you are driving somewhere right now you would be careful. it will be somewhat windy out there. allie rasmus continues our storm watch coverage. she continues our storm watch coverage live at the bay bridge toll plaza. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sal. the rain has stopped. you mentioned the roads are still a little damp.

drivers are having to deal with windy conditions. i'm going to use my note pad to give you an idea how bad the wind is gusting here. drivers are being warned about high winds on the bridge. the weather service hasn't issued a wind advisory just yet this morning. later in the day wind gusts are supposed to reach up to 35 miles an hour. definitely feel it out here. the wind is kind of tossing everything around. it's not having an impact on traffic though. allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. the search for human remains continues today in the same area where 300 human bones have already been discovered. investigators say they will keep their focus on an area in san joaquin county near the town of linden. this is where convicted serial killer wesley shermantine said where he and his partner loren

dumped their victims. with the bones they also found womens jewelry, clothing, and a purse. one newspaper reporter who has been corresponding with shermantine for the past six years was allowed a closer look at the search site. >> they have small piles of dirt. and they are going through on their hands and knees and coming through the dirt with their fingers and removing the large bones. >> police believe there could be as many as 20 bodies here or in two other sites. shermantine and her shaw's killing spree lasted since 1994. this morning vallejo police are expected to release new information about the search for six armed robbery suspects. that search lead to a standoff and house fire on friday.

swat team surrounded a home on castle wood drive for several hours looking for the suspects. police came up empty handed after the home caught fire. it's unclear how that fire started. the six men are -- sacramento police are investigating the death of a four-year-old boy after a suspected road rage incident. the boy's father lost control of his car and went down an embankment. the chp says the father was trying to speed away from a second driver after a heated traffic sis pout-- dispute. police are still looking for the second driver that sped aaway in a black chevy pickup. a 25-year-old woman was killed after her car flipped off an overpass in concord. the highway patrol says she was heading northbound on the highway 242 connect nor just --

connector. the woman was thrown from her car as it fell on southbound 242 below. she was pronounced dead at the scene. there is no word on the cause of that crash. time now is 4:33. one man -- the sheriffs department says 22-year-old terrell albert was arrested yesterday in vallejo about a half a mile from the scene. it started when deputies went to pine street to serve a warrant on another man. that's when albert tries to run away. one deputy called a man and ordered albert not to move. albert lunged for the gun. he was shot in the shoulder. the deputy was not hurt. antioch police are investigating a weekend of shootings. the first happened friday night near our home in the area ofest pan yes, sir street and magnolia. a 56-year-old man was shot in the head and remains in

critical condition. two people were shot during a fight outside a hall saturday night and a man was hit outside a bar early sunday morning. the autopsy on whitney houston is complete but it will be weeks before we know an exact cause of death. houston was found dead late saturday afternoon in the bathroom of her room at the beverly hilton hotel. she was in los angeles to attend a pregrammy party hosted by her long-time producer clive davis. family members went into the bathroom when houston would not respond to her calls. she was found unresponsive in the tub. >> cause of death at this time because it is pending toxicology. and that could take up to six to eight weeks at this time the cause of death is deferred. >> according to tmz police found legal prescription pills in houston's room including dan

nix. it's reporting the coroners office told houston that she likely died from a combination of pills and alcohol. the music legends death came on the eve of the grammy awards. coming up we'll have more on the somber attribute and hear from a local music produce tear is looking back on his time spent working with whitney houston. the wife of san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi will testify at his upcoming domestic abuse trial. eliana lopez will cooperate and take the stand. however, she adds that lopez may limit her testimony if she does not get immunity from the district attorney. she wants lopez to get immunity in case she faces possible child endangerment charges. 4:36 is the time right now. an earthquake in the geyser area jolted people across the entire bay area.

the magnitude 4.4 quake hit shortly before 9:00. they reported feeling the quake. more than 100 miles south of the epicenter. this morning president obama will speak at a community college in northern virginia about the new budget he is sending to congress today. the president's budget for 2013 includes a proposal for community colleges and businesses to w together to train workers in high growth industries. and it contains $4 trillion in deficit reduction over the next decade through cuts in government penning and higher taxes on the wealthy. republicans are vowing to oppose the tax hikes. president obama will be here in the bay area on thursday. he's appearing at two fundraisers in san francisco. the first is a $35,000 a plate dinner for 60 guests at the home of robert mueller

anderson. afterwards he will appear at a larger event where tickets will run $100 to $7500. the president's last trip to san francisco was in october. right now it's 4:37. i want to check in with sal. some wet roads out there this morning. most of the night i heard rain. >> yeah. it was pretty rainy and still wet out there. it's also windy as you saw allie standing at the by bridge. westbound 80 that traffic is moving along pretty well heading out to the bridge. there is no major problem there is. as a matter of fact, traffic continues to move along pretty well if you are driving on the commute. this is a look now at the bay bridge toll plaza. the traffic will be moving along relatively well here. there are no overproblems. it will be windy on the span. just be careful as you drive out there. and if you are driving on northbound 280 getting up to

highway 17, the traffic is moving along pretty nicely. i do want to mention there is a crash that just came in. northbound 680 at scott creek. watch for a crash there. it will be a little bit of slow traffic coming down. at 4:38 let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. our system is moving into the north. it has sent in off and on rain. nothing too heavy. some of the streets are dry and some of it is west. we've already had some disturbances out ahead of it. it's a colder system. and the lowest it tracks to the east. northbound and east bay more in line than anybody else. although right now it's mainly from the peninsula and south bay. so it's kind of broad brushing us from the northwest. 40s at the temps. but a very chilly day as this system drops in and has a lot of cold air with it. it will continue to give us a

it's beginning to be colder and windy today along with off and on rain. highs will only be in the 50s. occasionally you will see showers and then you will get sam clearing. temperatures really breezy as well. it's a colder pattern today. the san francisco arch diocese is reacting to white house changes over birth control coverage. on friday president obama announced schools and hospitals operated by the catholic church will not have to cover birth control. insurance companies will do so directly. in a letter to perishers, the arch diocese says that change does not go far enough because many schools and hospitals operated by the church are self- insured. >> i think he wants to find a

states hold nominating contests. athens is calm this morning after that is after 100,000 protestors hit the streets in what is described as the worst rioting to hit the city in years. the violence lead to several large fires last night across the city. greeks are upset about new us a tearty measures. greece is trying to secure a bailout deal to avoid bankruptcy. the violence continues in syria despite the united nations considering a new resolution condemning the bloody crack down. amateur video shows a rocket attempt on the town of holmes. nearly 700 people have died in the past week. they will review a saudi arabia resolution that criticizes syria. syria says it will adopt a new constitution which signals it is moving toward government reform. one of the former libyan leader moammar gadhafi's

surviving sons is under house arrest. he warns of a revolt against libya's new government. gadhafi has been in nee jeer since december. he had been granted asylum. but his new quotes moammar gadhafi was killed in october. ten years later in indonesia the trial began this morning for one of the insurgents accused of the 2002 bali nightclub bombs. he was caught last year in the same pakistani town where osama bin laden was hiding. there was a $1 million bounty on his head. he struck two nightclubs across from each other. 202 people died in the blast. three other insurgents have been tried and executed for that attack. volunteers sifted through a

mountain of paper work hoping to uncover clues left behind by josh powell. investigators believe that powell may have tumped papers there days before killing his two children and himself. powell was a person of interest in his wife's disappearance two years in utah. investigators continue to look for evidence. >> names, addresses, anything from utah, anything that would make a connection of some sort. books, calendars, maps. >> now investigators say they located a storage locker where he stashed a comforter. it tested positive for the presence of blood. a judge is expected to rule today on whether to ease restrictions on jerry sandusky's house arrest. that would allow the former penn state football coach to visit his 11 grandchildren while he awaits trial on sex abuse charges. san dusky has been -- sandusky

has been under house arrest when he was charged with sexually abusing young boys over a 15 year period. he has pleaded not guilty to the charges. the judge says he's aiming for a may trial. time now is 4:47. the aids memorial quilt is now on display in san francisco's castro district. the exhibit opened yesterday. volunteers read the names of those that died from the disease as each section was unfolded. it's the largest showing of the quilt in san francisco since it relocated from atlanta. it's not only a reminder of those that are lost but a tool. >> this is for people that may not be for for those with hiv and recommit in the fight. >> the public is invited to see the quilt. it will be on display every day between noon until 8:00 p.m. for the next week. admission is free.

whitney houston's legacy is being remembered in the bay area here by those who made the music and those who bought it. michael al don worked with houston at his studio in san rafael. the two collaborated on three of her albums. which included hits how do i know and one moment in time. he said houston was always confident her amazing voice. >> it's almost undoable. how much is expected of our super stars. it's almost undoable. so from that standpoint it would have been nice if she had a chance to take a breath along the way. >> since her death houston cds and albums have been selling out. fans said houston was one of the greatest voices of our

time. whitney houston's death came on the eve of the grammy awards. ♪ i will always love you >> grammy winner jennifer hudson performed houston's signature song. a full blown attribute wasn't possible because houston's death came so soon before the broadcast. as we reported earlier houston's cause of death is still under investigation. it could take up to eight weeks for toxicology and other test results to come in. one artist took the stage more than anyone else. >> and the grammy goes to. little music. 21. >> british singer adele won all six awards she was nominated for including album, record, and song of the year.

college sports fans. pac 12 will break ground. the network will broadcast 850 live sporting events each year. that includes nearly all of the big bay area football, basketball, and baseball games. if you didn't remember valentines day tomorrow, and americans are expected to spoil their sweethearts with more gifts this year. according to the survey for national -- they are expected to spend $126. that is the highest amount in the survey ten-year history. speaking of something sweet girl scout cookies go on sale in the bay area today. on saturday 90,000 boxes of cookies arrived in san francisco. for the first time the scouts will accept debt and credit cards. sommoa that is my favorite. >> i like the thin mints.

there is a crash this morning in milpitas. the fire department is there. it's not causing a big traffic jam because it's so early. if you are coming down the hill and getting into san jose, the traffic is going to be okay. but you will see some light there is as you pass mission boulevard north. the injury crash southbound 680 at scott creek. watch for it. northbound traffic looks pretty good. although you may see rubber necker delays. this is a look at interstate 880 in oakland. the traffic moves well in both directions. still very windy and wet out there. so use caution. give yourself extra time. the morning commute on westbound bay bridge still looks good. on to a very windy bay bridge. use caution as you drive across the bridge. no major problems by the way reported on the way into san francisco. now let's go to steve.

>> thank you. and we have a very cold air mass moving over us right now. snow on the go up in the sierra nevada and the northern mountains. the main low responsible for it is still up around. it's driving toward lake county. probably napa, solano and over toward the sierra nevada. farther more and east off and on rain. we've already had some of that going through. you all notice more of the cold and windy today. it will be a day where temperatures struggle to get out of the mid 50s. off and on rain. there have already been gusts over 30. it's coming more out of the north. it will be a colder pattern. you can see on live storm tracker two down to the coastline. 40s on the temps i expect these to struggle most of the morning. it's getting colder and colder out there. the colder air mass will settle in for most of the day. the system is packing a decent punch. it will be more of a snow producer than a rain producer for us.

that is good news for the sierra. i tell you there is already a bite to the morning air. colder and windy with off and on rain. temperatures in the 50s. 55-58 should cover the spread today. on the extended outlook once we clear this out it will be really chilly in the morning. it looks dry wednesday and thursday. increasing clouds a little bit on friday. more so on saturday. and it looks like saturday night and sun another low comes in for a round of rain. oakland city offices will be closed today to observe abraham lincoln's birthday. parking meters will be enforced. city hall was also closed on friday on a way to save money. city employees get unpaid time off as part of an agreement reached last year to help the city close a $58 million budget deficit. statute of limitations fighting
