. >> reporter: we're live in vallejo where we're learning new details about a gun battle that erupted at a nail salon last night, leaving a little girl in critical condition. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's tuesday, february 14th. this morning, vallejo police are investigating a terrifying shootout at a strip mall. five people were hurt including

a 2-year-old girl. it happened on springs road. tara moriarty joins us. what are investigators telling thu morning -- telling you this morning? >> reporter: well, this was sheer panic. the evidence is the bullet holes in the glass. there were six bullet holes in the hair salon next door and even more down the strip mall. now, the violence erupted last night just after 7:00. police say a man's intended target, a female customer getting her nails done. he shot at her and left and then returned to polish off the job. and then the salon owner and her granddaughter, a 2-year-old girl, were all shot. we spoke to a regular customer who said that little girl a

charmer. >> she's so sweet and adorable. she runs around the shop. she likes helping everybody and saying her a.b.c.s and talking with her granny and playing with her mom, playing with everybody in the shop. they are a -- three a lovely family. i don't see how any of this could have happened to them. >> reporter: the 2-year-old was airlifted to a hospital in oakland. she was shot in the knee and twice in the stomach. she just underwent surgery. she's in critical but stable condition and is expected to survive. investigators recovered dozens of shell casings. one of the gunman was shot. we're not sure which one. police arrested one gunman and they said the initial gunman who walked into the salon was not alone. so they are still searching for two more gunmen. detectives are hoping for that surveillance camera will provide them with more shoes

about exactly who did this. we're live in vallejo, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:02. well, overnight in oakland, two people safely escaped their burning apartment. this happened just before 12:30 at 34th and helen streets. the firefighters say the flames were coming out of the second floor of the building, then spread to the attic. two people managed to get out safely. one of them told us he's visiting from italy and is happy he got out with his passport. >> they wake up -- wake me up. >> they woke you up? >> yes. >> it took about 35 minutes to put the flames out. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. 7:03. the 15-year-old oakland boy accused of killing his parents will appear in court later today for his arraignment. prosecutors say moses camen killed susan and robert camen

last month in their oakland home. and then he hid the poddy -- bodies. he will be tried as an adull. the hearing is getting underway today. wallace richardson is scheduled to be arraigned this morning. he's charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter in the shuttle bus driver accident. 7:04. in just a couple of hours, patients and employees of a nursing home in burlingame could find out if the nursing home will close. health officials say the home is out of date and they recommended closing it. dozens of workers and nurses protested that idea last friday, saying it would be traumatic for the patients and

cost as many as 200 jobs. the san mateo county board of supervisors will talk about the possible closure at 9:00 this morning. well, love is certainly in the air this morning. it is valentine's day. for a lot of people that means finding a last-minute gift for their sweetheart. allie rasmus is live where business is expected to be booming at places like flower shops. dpoorm -- good morning, allie. >> reporter: that's right. this is one of the busiest days here at the san francisco flower mart. the way it works here, the people who sell their flowers here are wholesalers so people from the various floral shops from across the bay area make the trip here to pick up some of the supplies. they have roses hered.

an -- roses here and different flowers here. people are expected to spend 9% more on valentine's day than last year. we wanted to check with the owner of east bay flowers. is business better than last year? >> i believe so. i think we have a higher customer flow and it's been really busy for us. so we've been on our feet working hard to make people happy on valentine's day. >> what did you pick up today? >> picked up boxes of red roses, colored roses, all different centimeters. we have just fancy fillers to put in the vases. and mixed bouquets to sell. >> reporter: what's the most popular item this year for flowers? >> roses. they are the hottest seller. >> reporter: that's tradition. >> yes. people want red. that's the color, the color of

of india. a woman was on her way to pick up her children from school. it is 7:14. a new national poll shows rick santorum overtaking mitt romney as front-runner among the republican presidential candidates. rick santorum has a backing of 30% and romney, 28%. newt gingrich comes in third with 17% and ron paul in fourth with 12%. santorum's campaign received a boost last week when we won all three contests in minnesota, colorado and missouri. newt gingrich is one of the few candidates to make a campaign appearance here in california. he spoke at an hispanic leadership event last night. >> the goal should be for

back. we're gonna show you that unit in a little bit. neighbors tell us they heard gunshots coming from the home in the back there. now, alameda county coroners have a sticker over the lock on that unit. police say the 36-year-old oakland man shot and killed a 30-year-old woman here at about 6:30 last night, then turned the gun on himself. the woman died on the scene here. the man was taken to an area hospital where he died early this morning. neighbors reported hearing gunshots from the house. this man installed cable at her house. >> she was really nice. she said she was moving in with her boyfriend. she was really nice. >> reporter: police tell us the couple had previously been involved in a dating relationship and they said they did find a handgun at the scene. coming out to lure oiv shot, you can maybe tell in the distance that the home is still

stop the vehicle. the governor of washington signed legislation making that statement the 7th to legalize gay marriage. >> it is signed! [ cheers ] >> the measure is slated to take effect on june 7th, but opponents have until june 6th to collect the required number of signatures for a referendum to overturn the new law. if they do, the law will be put on hold until the outcome of a november vote. on this valentine's day, some same-sex couples will head to county clerks offices to request marriage licenses. it's a protest as part of the annual freedom to marry week. this is video from last valentine's day at the county clerk's office in martinez. currently, in california, same- sex marriage is not legal.

homeowners. the investigation found that pg&e documents the leaky zip ties as part of its pg&e leak survey. a pg&e employee who has sur saved -- surveys -- done surveys, he says they will use specialized equipment to detect if there's gas in the area. >> we just put zip ties on them and they leak. they feel they are safe. so they basically -- we've come to find out they are supposed to come out and fix them, and they don't do it. >> a pg&e look surveyor says a lot of the leaks are found in old gas pipes from the 60s and 70s. the california public utilities commission says it's visiting some neighborhoods that have been shooting.

other an -- and other apple projects. 7:46. is a man is dead this morning after what police say was a home invasion. pam cook is in our newsroom now. there's new information about this. pam? >> we've found out that the suspected intruder was shot and killed with his own gun. it happened last night in antioch in the dallas ranch neighborhood on wexler peak. investigators say the homeowner was watching tv with his 7-year- oldson when someone tried to kick in his front door. now, the homeowner grabbed the intruder's observe gun and shot him three times. some neighbors say they moved to get away from the violence. but they are still tired of it. >> you are taking everybody's life. we can't even live every day without looking over our

shoulder. >> detectives are looking for witnesses who may have seen something like last. antioch police told us about 2:00 this morning that investigators were out talking to the homeowner. i did leave a message for the detective on the case. hopefully i can get an update from him and possibly some comments from the homeowner in the next hour -- in the next hour. 7:47. this morning, police in vallejo still out there searching for six armed robbery suspects. now, that manhunt led to a standoff and a house fire last week. look at the pictures. investigators say the suspects ran to the home on castlewood drive after beating up a man and stealing hess marijuana. police followed the six men there. that led to the standoff and the house fire. the s.w.a.t. team eventually moved in but there was no sign of the six men who apparently escaped and got away. still not clear how that fire began. only on 2, a weapons bust at an oakland hotel.

police are telling us this was an undercover 0ration -- operation. police in colorado are investigating the first serious campus attack at columbine high school since the deadly shootings there 13 years ago. investigators say a 14-year-old girl attacked two students with a hammer in the school hallway yesterday morning. both victims are expected to make a full recovery. the jefferson county sheriff's office is questioning the girl to find out what led up to the attack. new this morning, we've learned that singer whitney houston will be laid to rest this saturday. funeral services will be held at the new jersey church where

. welcome back. this morning, police in vallejo are investigating a terrifying shootout. one that happened at a strip mall. five people, including a 2-year- old girl, were hurt last night on springs road. ktvu's tara moriarty is in vallejo right now. so what are investigators saying this morning, tara? >> reporter: you know, it was an incredibly chaotic scene at tina's nail salon. evidence of that is right in the glass here. you can see that there's a bullet hole. the door has been boarded up. next door at the hair salon if we walk over this way, the violence went on across the

domino's pizza and across the street. the violence erupted last night at 7:00. investigators say the man walked in with a gun. his intended target, a female customer getting her nails done. he shot at her, left, then returned to polish off the job. that's when her male friend push pull the out -- pulled out his own gun. >> there were a couple of dozen shell casings recovered. some in the parking lot directly behind me in the nail salon. there were others located down the street and across the street. >> so this was a rolling gun battle? >> yes. it appears to be a rolling gun battle. >> reporter: the 2-year-old was airlifted to oakland. her uncle said she was shot in the knee and twice in the stomach. she's in critical but stable

what are they saying? what do you know? >> reporter: well, let's start off with what alameda police toll me-- told me. they confirmed it was a murder suicide at 5:00 a.m. then at 7:00 we got more details. the incident seems to have happened at that home down there. we're gonna zoom in and show you. this was a domestic violence case that ended with a woman's death. neighbors tell me they heard gunshot gunshot wounds. police say a man shot and killed a woman here last night at about 6:30 and then turned the gun on himself. the woman died on the scene. the man was taken to the hospital where he died earlier this morning. neighbors heard a woman screaming. this morning we found one neighbor who said he knew the victim. >> yeah, she seemed really nice. said she was gonna move in with her boyfriend. it was months ago.
