this is a live tribute at san francisco city hall to tony bennett and the song that's now part of san francisco history. we'll have more on this story for you shortly on the noon news. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. we begin with police in vallejo looking for pair of gunmen after a shootout at a strip mall last night on springs road.

five people were hurt including a 2-year-old girl. we're live in vallejo with an undate on the victims and the search for the suspects. >> reporter: this is truly a kay on thetic scene. a pair of investigators were just here. they left literally about two minutes ago. you can see that the are front window of the business where this shooting happened, this nail salon, is blown out of one bullet hole in the window. you can see that running gun battle stretched to neighboring business, a glaziers here replacing the windows of this business. five people were shot. three people were exchanging gunfire. police are looking for two gunmen and one of the shooters is in custody. police say the shootings started shortly after 7:00 last night. witnesses say a man walked into the nail salon targeting a woman having her nails done. witnesses say he started shooting, left the shop, then came back and opened fire again. that's when witnesses say the woman's male friend inside the salon pulled out his own gun

and returned fire. >> all the armed suspects left the store on foot and a running gun battle continued down city streets. >> the female customer, the shop owner and her 2-year-old granddaughter were all shot in the exchange. this morning customers say they're sad that the girl was caught in the crossfire. >> she is so sweet and adorable. she runs around the shop. she helpses everybody. they're a lovely family, so sweet. i don't see how anything like this could ever happen to them. >> the toddler was taken to the hospital with injuries to her legs and stomach. police say she will survive. the two women were also treated as was a bystander. police today say they believe there were two gunmen outside the shop planning the attack. investigators believe one of the gunmen was also shot in the exchange of gunfire.

this business was targeted by burglars a month ago. he's had enough. he's moving out. >> the area is getting worse and worse. >> if we can come back out to our live shot, you can see the bullet holes here in the neighboring businesses. some people saying enough, leeing the area. police are looking for the who suspects who escaped on foot. back to you. >> thank you. just a few minutes agency investigators began digging for human remains at a site in san joaquin county. they're searching for possible victims of the so-called speed freak killers. crime scene experts have found hundreds of bones and bone fragments in an abandoned well near the town of linden. they have been sifting through evidence already uncovered. now after a rain delave 24 hours, they're again using large excavators to search for

more remains. investigators say their search area could expand to a second well on the same property. the 15-year-old oakland boy accused of killing his parents will appear in court today for his arraignment. prosecutors say moses camen killed his parents last month in their oakland home before hiding the bodies inside the family car. as a resulted, the 15-year-old is being charged as an adult. today's hearing will start at 2:00 p.m. alameda police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide. officers were called to the avenue have a about 6:30 last night. they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds, a 30-year- old woman and a 36-year-old oakland man. the woman died at the scene. the man later died at the hospital. neighbors say they heard the gunfire. >> i was surfing the internet. i heard like fire crack, bang,

bang, bang. there was a pause. there was another bang, bang, bang. i thought this must be gunshots. >> investigators say it appears the man shot the woman and then shot himself and that the two used to date one another. their names have not been released. two people safely escaped their burning apartment in oakland. it happened just before 12:30 at the intersection of 34th and helen streets. firefighters say flames were coming from the second floor of the building and then spread to the attic. who people got out safely. one of them told us he's vesting from italy and is thankful he got out with his passport. >> they wake up meantime. yeah. >> they woke you up? >> yeah. i'm a tourist. >> it took about 35 minutes to put the fire out and the cause is under investigation. we have received new video

of the fire in richmond. flames broke out about an hour ago at a single story home on 31st street and esmond avenue. heavy dark smoke could be seen for miles. about to firefighters arrived on the scene and put out the flames. fire officials say one person was treated for a minor cut. there is no word on a cause of the fire. pg&e is dealing with two power outages in the bay area today due to mylar balloons. one happened just an hour eyeing on 39th avenue near foothill boulevard. there are reports that a balloon floated into a power line and caused a transformer explosion. that left electrical lines dangling. pg&e says a mylar balloon also knocked out power to 2200 customers in san francisco. this is pg&e video of a power line arcing at 16th and florida streets about 8:45 a.m. crews restored power in about

an hour. mylar balloons cause the almost 300 power outages in northern california last year. it's important not to let them float away. on this valentine's day, as they do every year, same sex marriage advocates took a message to san francisco city hall. the protesters made their annual pilgrimage to city hall to push for the rights of gay couples to marry. of after rallying on the steps, they walked inside to the city clerk's office. there they sang civil rights songs and made a symbolic request for a marriage license. after they were turned down, the protesters staged a sit-in. officer ordered them to leave. when they did not, police moved in and arrested the

demonstrators. last last minute shoppers are racing to impress their sweethearts. one great place to shop is still open for two hours. in ten minutes the place to go for flowers in san francisco. funeral arrangements are set for whitney houston in her home state of new jersey. a hearse carrying her body arrived at a funeral home in newark last night under heavy police escort. the funeral homeowner announced a 12:00 noon service this saturday at the new hope baptist church. that's where houston first started singing as a child. an autopsy on sunday shows no indications of foul play. and no signs of trauma. authorities are waiting for toxicology tests. in san francisco, there is a citywide tribute going on right now for legendary singer tony bennett. his famous song "i left my heart in san francisco" was recorded 50 years ago. we're live from san francisco to show you how the city is

paying tribute to the great singer and the song. >> this free concert just got underway. we'll pan over to show you the timing here is just perfect. there is mr. tony bennett alongside the mayor and his wife. they've rolled out the red carpet for him. they're making their way down the stairs. this is a free concert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the recording of "i left my heart in san francisco." bennett debuted the song at the fairmont hotel in 1961 here in san francisco. he recorded the original version of it the following year. the plan for this concert this afternoon is to have various groups from the san francisco boys choir to the san francisco symphony, to beach blanket babylon perform, definite renditions of this song. then the idea is at the end of it all, everyone will join in and sing along with tony bennett and sing the original version of the song together.

earlier today we talked with the mayor and asked him about the goal of this tribute. here's what he said. >> we have an opportunity to present him with accolades of 50 years of wonderful song mastery, not only the song but i think our city is shining at this moment. it's valentine's day. what can you do?

>> reporter: if you come back out here live, i don't know if you can hear us now, right now looking at member of the san francisco boys qiefer and san francisco girls choir filing down the stairs here. they're one of several groups that will be singing a variation of "i left my heart in san francisco." now, according to the organizer of this event, the chief of protocol for the city of san francisco, she's the lady signature behind the mayor and mr. bennett in her red suit, she told us that tony bennett really is a supporter of music and art in schools. so he specifically asked to have students perform as part of this celebration this afternoon. you are looking at tony bennett sitting at the seat of honor right in the middle of the san francisco city hall rotunda. this is about a 30-minute

$10,000 reward will provide information about the latest act of vandalism at a new school. the school was scheduled to open in two weeks. over the weekend someone shattered dozens of windows, broke a water heater valve, thousands of gallons of water flooded the auditorium and splashed paint on walls and video equipment. it's the second time in three weeks the school has been vandal eased. >> we're not accusing anybody. but we're looking very broadly at the picture and not just at who are the kids that did this? >> police say the damage looks like the work of someone with a grudge. the school had been scheduled to welcome students by the end of the month. now it will be several weeks before classes can be held at the school. a few hours ago president barack obama met with the man next this line to be the president of china. >> i want to welcome the vice president to the oval office and welcome him to the united states.

her son to domestic violence today made a plea it to help save other victims. she appeared with members of the santa cruz county domestic violence council. the council released a new report showing last year 16 people in the county died in domestic violence incidents. that's the highest number since 2003. last july her husband killed their son, then killed himself. >> please, honor my son andrew, my angel, my hero, and not allow another innocent victim to fall prey to domestic violence and firearms. >> the district attorney's office said she had a protective court order against her husband but that her son wanted to live with him. today the district attorney said when family members have a protective order in place they should let police know if the estranged person has a firearm. a new poll shows that people have strong opinions about their end of life health care but few have done anything

about it. the california health care foundation poll found that 66% of californians prefer a natural death while 7% want care to prolong their lives as much as possible. 80% plan to talk to their doctors about end of life care, only 7% had taken that step. 82% agreed that end of life wishes should be in writing, 23% had done so. the mountain view city council is scheduled to take a se vote today on a smoking ban. the proposed ban would prohibit smoking on outdoor pat yows at bars and restaurants. the ban won preliminary apliewl last month. smoking advocates say the new rules will deny smokers the same conference and services as nonsmokers. if you are looking to impress your sweetheart today, you might want to stop by the san francisco plowr mart. valentine's day is the busiest day of the year for vendors at
