block away said he had to take cover. today detectives went door to door to businesses surrounding this nail salon where gun fire erupted last night hitting five people including the owners 2- year-old granddaughter, her grandmother who was holding her was also shot. >> at least good 30 to 40 shots fired i would say. >> rapid? >> yeah. back and forth. >> reporter: jeremy brown said he had to take cover outside a taco truck. >> seen two guys over there standing and they walked over this way toward the nail shop and suddenly the bullets started going crazy and we jumped in the bushes and got out of there. . >> reporter: he said it was to dark to see the suspect's faces, police are looking for two men, one opened the door to the nail salon and started shooting. his target a 27-year-old woman. that's when police say the woman's friend pulled out a gun of his own. >> as the suspect backed away

he engaged the suspect with the firearm and fired several rounds. >> reporter: police say it led to a gun fight with another armed suspect waiting outside. long time customers of the salon who know the girl can't believe it. >> they is so adorable. she runs around the shop and likes helping everybody and sing her abc's and talking to her grandmother and playing with her mom they are a lovely family. just so sweet. >> reporter: and the man here at the salon who fought back was arrested because police say he was a felon in possession of a gun. a 17-year-old checked himself into the hospital last night with gun shot wounds. we asked if he is a suspect and they would only say he haven't been able to talk to him because he is in surgery. we are live in vallejo. >> in san jose police are looking for two or three men who robbed a wells fargo bank

this afternoon. happened just before 1:30 this afternoon afternoon. it's the same bank robbed last month. police say at least one of the men had a gun but no shots were fired nobody was hurt. officers have been searching for the suspects but right now it appearance they are still on the run. they apparently got away with some money but it's not clear how much. >> state attorney general has decided not to refile rape charges against a prosecutor. the times reports that the decision was made last week but not made public until today. a judge dismissed the case in october after finding the grand jury that indicted him hadn't heard evidence that could have cast doubt on his accuser. a spokeswoman for the attorney general said they had no comment on the case. >> investigators now say that the deaths of two foam alameda appear to be murder suicide. officers were called to the 2100 block of alameda avenue last night and found two people

with gun shot wounds, a 30-year- old woman from alameda and a 36- year-old man from oakland. the woman died at the sign. the man died later at the hospital. neighbors on this normally quiet street say they heard the gun fire. >> i was on the internet and heard fire crack like bang bang bang and then there was a pause and another bang bang bang. >> reporter: investigators believe the man shot the woman and then turned the done on hippings. authorities say they used to date. their names haven't been released. >> the city of san francisco today filed a lawsuit against a federal agency in charge of enforcing gas pipeline safety. the city attorney said the united states pipeline and hazardous safety administration has failed to enforce safety standards for more than a decade prior to the explosion in san bruno. it claims they have ignored the concerns about not enough oversight hasn't put in recommendations after a federal

investigation into the disaster. the pipe lane administration didn't respond to all requests for comments. >> some unexpected good news for the fiscal outlook. a new report showed the city will end the current psyche well $80 million more than first anticipated. the additional revenue is from property taxes as well as taxes payroll, sales, hotel and parking. officials say the unexpected revenue indicates an economic recovery in san francisco but they warn that the city is still facing a massive 229 million-dollar budget deficit for the upcoming fiscal year. >> about an horologe leader assonanced a possible deal to extend the president's payroll tax cut. they have agreed to extend the tax cut through the end of the year and renew jobless benefits for millions of long term unemployed. under this plan the average family stands to see almost a thousand dollars added to their paycheck this year. earlier today the president stepped up his push to renew

mobile phone app nah will let members of the public be a part of the emergency response team. the free app is designed to alert members of the public who are trained in cpr to give assistance to victims of sudden cardiac arrest. it's called pulse point app. if you know cpr and feel comfortable responding if you are out in a public place, this will alert you if you are nearby to someone that needs help. >> the app lets you get access to select 911 emergency communication centers for realtime access to emergency activity. authorities say san jose is the nation's largest city to use this technology. >> a company in san francisco is warning doctors and patients about counterfeit vials of its best selling drug. they said fake avastin has been circulating since at least december and it doesn't contain a key ingredient. it's not known how many doctors got it or how many patient

. a quiet welcome for whitney houston. funeral plans underway for the star who died suddenly over the weekend just hours before she was to sing at a grammy award party in beverly hills. she will be remembered in a private funeral set for this weekend. the message went out today to let the family mourn away from the spotlight. >> they have shared her for 30 some year was the city, the state, with the world. this is their time now for their farewell. >> a private funeral is scheduled for noon on saturday in her hometown. the governor said he will order the state's flag flown at half mast that day. the singer was part of the cultural fabric of new jersey. >> think you know she belongs in the same category from a musical perspective in new

this is ktvu channel 2news at five. >> you are probably going to start noticing more police officers riding on bart trains as part of a new plan for bart police that they say will make them more effective fighting crime. rob roth here now to tell us what else they will do different. >> reporter: we are at the rock ridge bart station where it's the middle of rush hour. police officials announced they are changing the way they patrol not only here but the entire system as community policing comes to bart. police officers have started riding the trains more as we found in 2010 they used to ride twice a shift. that is increased now to three a shift and plans to add a 4th trip by year's end. >> they need to be on there. >> reporter: officials say they are dividing the system into five zones and are assigns the same team of officers to each zone or in some cases just a few stations. that way they can get better

>> reporter: bart police say passengers may not notice results right away but it's a long term commitment. reporting live in oakland. ktvu channel 2news. >> pg&e crews dealt with at least two power outrages because of free floating mylar balloons . one caused a huge explosion and cut a power line. a woman selling balloons said it was one of her balloons that got got away. >> it started to fly and they got stang -- they just got close to the wire and that's when it exploded. >> reporter: the outage affected 1400 people. crews had power restored by about 3:30. earlier 2200 lost power in san francisco for an hour because of another mylar balloon. they cause almost 300 power outrages in north eastern california last year and it's

no the board of supervisors took up a proposal to clear a path for the city's central subway projectt. calls for extending underground train service from south market to china town but a building would have to be torn down to make room for the station. 18 people would be displaced the project's budget includes $8 million to help them find permanent housing. >> congress is taking a hard look at cruise ship safety rules in the wake of the disaster. groups endorsed the new policy to require captains to hold an abandoned ship drill before the liner leaves port. that may not be enough for lawmakers. >> this is a good step forward but we want to make sure that

there is legal authority to make sure that this is done. it's not just okay we feel like doing this. >> reporter: prior to the disaster, cruise ship has to hold drills with in 24 hours of leaving port. >> tonight the mountain view city council could finalize a strict new smoking ban that has some fuming. the council gave approval last month to a ban on smoking near windows and doors of bars and restaurants. that prompted a signature gathering campaign to oppose the ban by a resident who turned in more than a thousand signatures today. he said the ban will impact the civil liberties of smokers and hopes to sway the vote. if the new ban is a proved it'll take effect in 90 days. >> sciencists have figured out a way to determine if a couple will last and they do it by looking at brain activity early on in the relationship. they charted brain activity when subjects looked at a picture of their partner. among those whose relationships
