temperatures in the 30s and 40s. north wind has kicked in between last nights brief wind. there it goes. left a couple .1 to a tenth of an inch. that has moved out we are seeing wind. upper 50s and low 60s. here is sal. we have breaking traffic news. there is a new crash on the bay bridge westbound in the right lane. you can see emergency vehicles trying to get through the traffic that is westbound at treasure island. just before the island in the slow lane. we're not sure if there are any injuries involved. they may be sending emergency teams out there to find out. this is westbound on the bridge. you are hearing this. you know the bridge traffic will be terrible because unless they get this thing outs of the way instantly we have an instant up here at the toll plaza. they will slow the metering

lights down. traffic is going to be slow. again a new crash on the bridge. now weather is a big concern for cal tran as it prepares for a major closure this holiday weekend on this very same bridge. ktvu claudine wong is at the toll plaza. tells us if we should find out today what will happen. claudine. >> reporter: that is right, sal. an announcement expected today. they are watching the weather very closely. we did see a tow truck speeding their way up there. we know they are on their way to that. the big announcement focuses on the closure planned for this weekend. they have been planning for this for a very, very long time. they need to realign traffic so that it can go around an area that they want to work on they want to connect this area to the new bridge that closure is expected to go from friday night until monday. the rain is an issue. they have to do striping and they can't do that if the roads are wet. we did talk to drivers that

already made plans to go around this this weekend. they said they would rather not delay it. they just want to do it and get it over with. >> at some point they are going to close it. i would rather it be this weekend. >> reporter: is it easier because of the holiday weekend? >> i think it's easier because of the holiday. >> reporter: cal tran agrees. that's why they planned it for this weekend. if you take a look at the hind of the screen that is where striping is. that is where traffic will be heading. again cal tran says they need six orcein hours to lie down the striping and have that striping dry. if that systemmen comes in they are not going to be doing this work. they say yesterday they were more concern ophidias ago. live here at the bay bridge claudine wong. investigators have now

unearthed 1,000 bones at sites at calveras and san joaquin counties. in hours whether be learning more about this horrifying serial killer case. tara moriarty joins us now. >> reporter: one of the fascinating aspects of this story is how they found the remains. there a local bounty hunter. there is wesley shermantine and loren herzog who did serve time but got off on a technicality. he said your friend is free and really he is convinced that's what lead shermantine to provide a map leading to the victims. let's take a look at aerial shots over the excavation site. authorities found 300 bobs and bone fragments every the week.

along with purses, shoes, and jewelry. the remains are being processed at a lab. >> we clean off the surface of the bone. we cut a piece out and pulverize that into a fine powder and use chemicals to extract the dna. >> reporter: 11 years ago shermantine was convicted of 16- year-old chevy wheeler of stockton. ktvu was at the courthouse and we spoke to her father. >> we just want her remains back so we can say hi every once in awhile. >> reporter: yesterday they confirmed her remains. they are believe to have killed 20 or more weapon. there is a press conference by sheriffs deputies coming up.

we are sure to keep you posted if there are no new investments. 6:05. back here at home antioch city leaders planning a town hall meeting. one of the final straws monday nights fatal shooting at the front door of a home. jim davis wants more neighborhood watch programs and wants to rework the city's budget to hire more police. no dates for the town hall meeting has been set yet. in vallejo police are investigating the city's first fatal shooting of the year. 23-year-old daniel stevens was shot several times yesterday afternoon. a friend had already taken him to the hospital before the police got there. he later died of his injuries. so far no arrests have been made. republican presidential candidate rick santorum may ask for secret service protection after a rally washington state

become rowdy. he hosted an outdoor rally at the history museum in tacoma. two of the protestors were dragged away by police. santorum said it's a sad state of affairs but for his family stake he may ask for secret service protection. right now the only other republican with secret service protection is mitt romney. he will oversee the daily program for the three-day program. the move is a further step on the national stage for the two- term mayor. 6:07. congress may be close to a deal to extend the payroll tax cuts. republican and democratic negotiators. >> they did reach a tentative agreement and now they have to sell it to their members. coming up the key demand

republicans gave us to reach the deal and the one concession they were able to get from democrats how that may effect people receiving unemployment benefits. >> thank you, pam for stepping in and saving me. you get that tickle in your throat once in awhile. >> what can you do while you're on tv and that happens. sal, how is your commute? >> it's doing okay but we have a crash on the bay bridge. we did have the east shore freeway camera up. it was turned over to the incline section. and now we're watching traffic get heavy on the bridge. i want to mention there is a crash on the bridge. i want to see if we have any of the cameras lined up to the bay bridge. we'll show that to you next time. this is the east shore freeway. the traffic is moving along okay. people driving on the bay bridge the chp issued a high wind advisory for the span. those signs are flashing in

both directions. traffic will be busy as you said on the bridge. chp says weather and speed are to blame for this overnight crash. a driver lost control and took out a metering light. just before 2:00 a.m.. the driver was the only person in the car no one was hurt. coming up to the coliseum area you can tell it's windy. in the control room i want to two to the incline section. a standstill because of the crash. westbound on the bay bridge. they are trying to clear it. this is not remmed at the toll plaza we're already getting a backup way before we normally get it. crash on the bridge still being cleared. you can see traffic on the incline section is not doing well. this is a look at the antioch commute. that traffic is slow already on highway 4. let's go to steve. thank you. a very good morning.

whitney houston got those prescriptions. authorities collected several bottles of prescription drugs from her hotel room after her death on saturday. but the amount of drugs didn't seem unusually large. investigators will be looking at whether the drugged were dispensed properly and whether whitney houston was receiving too many prescriptions. her private funeral will be held this coming saturday. president obama's approval rating is rising along with voters optimism about the economy. the president's approval rating has reached 50% mark in the latest new york times poll. that is his highest approval rating since may 2010. the poll also shows the percentage of people that believe the economy is getting better is now greater than those who believe it is getting worse. 43% say they still believe it's staying the same. 6:15. congressional negotiators are expected to give up the details of a deal today to extend the payroll tax cut through next

year. as alison burns reports. this will mean long-term unemployment benefits will come to an end. good morning. >> reporter: dave, good morning. first let's talk about the payroll tax holiday. the deal means americans making $50,000 a year get to keep about $20 a week in their paychecks. republican negotiators drop their demand that it be paid for with cuts to federal programs but this morning some in the party say they are not happy with that concession. >> think about what we are doing for your seniors. we are pushing social security closer off the cliff. we will run the -- >> the deal continues to fund long-term social security benefits but reduces the maximum benefits from 99 weeks to 73 weeks and only in states that have been hardest hit with somes republicans also pushing for drug testing for people on unemployment benefits. we'll have more on where that

bungled the chauncey bailey murder case. warning drivers all over the city that is after several car thefts last week. six cars were reported stolen. that is three-times the average for the city of livermore. police are telling drivers make sure you lock your car and take your keys. back over to sal to check in on the commute. how does it look? >> right now it's not looking big on the bay bridge. there is a crash clearing from treasure island. traffic is easing up on the incline section. there is is a backup toward the toll plaza already. that's because they had to switch the metering lights on to extra slow. the crash looks like it's gone. the accident backup remains getting on to the bridge and also at the toll plaza. looking at the wind condition, people driving on the bay bridge should be aware any way. the chp has issued a high wind

good morning. right now traffic is moving along relatively well on the bay bridge. we had an earlier crash that blocked the right lane. the traffic on the bridge is recovering. we have a rather large backup now at the toll plaza. all right you have tyke a look at -- you have to take a look at your screen right now. a 46-year-old man lucky to be alive after his car was crushed by a 20-ton bolder. the man lost consciousness at first when he woke up he found himself pinned between the lock and his car door. recovery crews did not expect him to find him alive. he suffered broken ribs, flatten lungs, and damaged ten

dins but is expected to make a full recovery. 6:26. we are also following breaking news coming in from central america. more than 300 prison inmates have been killed. a fire swept through a prison in hon doris. the huge flames trapped the inmates inside their cells. an investigation is under way as to whether the fire was triggered by rioting inmates or an electrical short sir caught. nadia electrickier has entered rehab. she is the wife of state treasure bill lockyer. in a statement she is seeking treatment after an incident at a new york motel. she was violently assaulted by an exboyfriend. she is in rehab to heal from that attack and for treatment for a chemical dependency and chronic pain from a past car accident. >> as a supervisor i think

with the details. we have learned that two victims have been positively identified but they were found in another county. we're here at a dig site that is a mile down the road where yesterday investigators unearthed 700 more bone fragments. bringing the total to 1,000. we will take a look at aerial shots. sheriffs deputies say purses, shoes, clothing, and jewelry have been found from the abandoned well which sits on an old ranch. investigators came here based on maps drawn by shermantine. >> we have an anthropologist as we speak. he's at the morgue working on the remains somewhere brought there. >> reporter: the map lead to two dig site where is remains belonging to 16-year-old chevy wheeler. she disappeared in 1985 after telling friends she was running off with shermantine. last night we spoke by phone to chevy's mother who lives in

tennessee. >> reporter: the wheelers plan to return to stockton by the end of the month to have their daughter's remains cremated. shermantine and herzog are accused of killing 20 or more people. herzog committed suicide last month. who are the victims who's remains have been found? we'll hear from an investigator that says he has pretty good leads. we are live in san joaquin county. meantime suspected serial killer joseph naso is suspected back in a marin county courthouse. a judge will decide if he can continue to act as his own lawyer. naso is accused of killing four northern california women. the crimes dating back to the

1970s. he may be responsible for two more homicides. this morning two executives will be in court accused of violating campaign finance laws. the go laurie shuttle company is accused of making an illegal contribution to ed lee's campaign last fall. it asked employees to make donations and reimbursed them with company money. two proposals to change ranked choice voting in san francisco will not appear on the june ballot. the board of samples voted yesterday to table one measure that would have replaced rank choice voting with a primary and run off system. it also calls for more voter -- supervisors sent the proposal back to excite toe for further review. our time 6:34. new information just announced today about iran's nuclear

program. take a look at this. this is new video. there is iranian president touring a nuclear plant in tare tehran today. he inserted the first fuel rod into a reactor. iran said development is another step in iran's efforts to expand its nuclear program for peaceful purposes. however, the u.s. believes iran is building nuclear weapons. meantime the obama administration is considering cutting as much as 80% of the u.s. nuclear weapon arsenal. back in 2010 president obama and russia's president met in prague to sign an agreement to reduce the number of nuclear weapons in both nations. any reduction in the u.s. nuclear arsenal would only come as part of negotiations with russia. those negotiations are not scheduled to resume until after both countries hold presidential elections this year. about 90 minutes ago

authorities announced they caught a third iranian suspect involved in a series of explosions in thailand. the botched explosion blew up a house in bangkok. a bomb squad found and defused two other bombs packed with explosives. police were able to catch two iranians after a couple of bombs detonated prematurely. one of the explosions blew off the leg of a suspect. the third bomber was caught this morning in malaysia. 6:35. san francisco files a lawsuit and it's in connection president san bruno pipeline disaster. coming up for you at 6:45 what the city is accusing regular lay ever -- regulators of doing. ground breaking for the new 49ers stadium is set for late spring. last night they approved the $1 billion building contract. christien kafton is live at the site of the new stadium where

construction plans are ahead of schedule. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. construction crews that are working on prepping this site is just arriving. work already under way to prepare this site building the new stadium. santa clara's vote last night could mean the 49ers would play one at most two seasons at candle stick park. candle stick park has been plagued with -- santa clara council voted last night to approve the $878 million contract clearing the way for construction to begin in july. six months earlier than previous timeline. this stadium that would now be ready for exhibition play in august 2014 the contract sets a tight deadline if the stadium is not done on time.

the builders could be on the hook for $6 million in fines for each 49er game that is missed and daily fines that could top out at $20 million in penalties. two months ago the city approved an $850 million loan to pay for the stadium. the nfl will give the team another $200 million in loans and payments. the group santa clara pays fair is battling the plans and calling for a referendum. if we can come on back to the live shot, you might be able to see the construction workers starting to arrive. this again for the beginning phase the preparation phase getting this site ready for construction. santa clara mayor has been quoted in saying the 49ers will be playing here. he has no doubt whatsoever. we are live in santa clara christien kafton. sal has an update on that crash now. >> i do want to have the video show us the highway patrol investigating this crash in san

leandro on the hayward border. you can see a car and big rig involved. look at this badly damaged car. it happened just after 2:30 right by the 880 interchange. the driver tells us he swerved into the side of big rig to try to avoid another accident. the car sustained major damage on the passenger side. neither driver was injured. after looking at that video, i don't know how that happened. let's go to live pictures now westbound bay bridge backed up for a good long delay because of an earl crash on the span on the incline section near treasure actually it's right near the isle on treasure island. also westbound 580 clearing a crash here as you drive. look at all the sensors have turned deep red on 580. if this is your commute you need to give yourself extra

monday is rain. and how that is going to effect the project. what exactly are they trying to do this weekend? well, we had the spokesperson for the project explain what is going to happen. >> basically what we will be doing over the weekend is shifting all of the westbound traffic head into san francisco over to the south so a 20 lanes of traffic shifting down into five will be sliding over to the south. what that will do is allow us to surgically remove a section of the bridge ha is in the way of the new bridge and let us open the entire new bridge six months ahead of our previous schedule. >> reporter: why would rain effect all that? you are taking a live look at one of the areas they will be working on. you can see the new stripes that are laid down on the pavement. they have to do some striping on sunday and monday to let drivers know the new route in and through here. they cannot cothat if the pavement is wet. so that is why they are watching the skies so closely.
