and a series working their way in to knock the high out of the way. partly cloudy today, fog near the coast, a little cooler. it's still not bad, just not nice yesterday. temperatures will be in the 60s, some low, some mid- we'll see a little cooler pattern due to the fog. >> good friday morning to you. right now, traffic is moving along relatively well, but we do have trouble shot spots out there. i want to mention we have a crash southbound at highway 92. heyward, blocking one of the lanes there. that's right this. this is southbound 82 east. there's a crash blocking one of the lanes. a car spun out. watch out for slow traffic. eastbound i4 at prosecutor avenue, pittsburg, there's also a direction. take a look at interstate 880. as you drive both directions, traffic looks pretty good. no construction work there. on the san mateo bridge, traffic looks good, headed up

to the high rice san francisco approaching the 81 split. that traffic moves well. it's 4:30. let's go back to the desk. >> this morning marks the start of the bay bridge closure. the upper deck headed into san francisco will be shut down until tuesday morning. we're joined from joined from the toll plaza. >> well, good morning. if you have not heard, the bay bridge westbound lanes only into san francisco will be shut down. take a look behind me. this is exactly the area we're talking about. they will remain closed until tuesday morning at 5:00. make sure you have ways to get around this closure if you need to get out and about this weekend. this closure has been well publicized. most people should already have a plan in place. for many, that plan will be public transportation. >> it's going to be crowded and run a little slower or faster. we don't know. >> it's going to be good just

richmond san rafael bridge took about 40 minutes, but this weekend, it could be longer. bart appears to be the best option. now, bart will keep some of its stations open all night over the weekend. you can find a list of those stations on our website, ktvu.com under the bay bridge section. in overnight news, 8 people are homeless after a fire in contra kosta county. it happened at 1:00 this morning in alamo. now, the san rafael firefighters responded to put out the flames. no one was hurt. investigators say a smoke detector alerted a woman and the two kids to a fire. it's believed the fire started in a kitchen, possibly from a heater. the red cross is now helping the affected families. this morning, president obama is waking up in san francisco after his appearances in three fundraisers in the

city yesterday. channel reporter is in staff to tell us how the president's visit went and where he's headed next. >> reporter: well, at this point it looks like he can chalk up this visit as a success. you can see security is tight. the president, well, he's way down the street there. the intercontinental hotel is down there. as you can see the streets streets are blocked off in and around this area. for a couple of blocks the barricades are up. you're looking at a command vehicle. his visit is essentially over, but he got a warm reception in the city by the bay. statue of liberty right there. that's outstanding. i love you back. >> the president wrapped up his speech last night in front of a crowd of more than 2500 just before 10:00 last night. there were obvious lighter moments and protesters outside. even a couple inside that had to be escorted out, but the president made light of the

chinatown restaurant to pick up lunch. workers say they had no idea the president was going to stop by until the secret service arrived to do a security sweep. the president came into the restaurant, ordered some takeout. chatted with diners and posed with pictures. >> it's very exciting to meet the president of the united states. it's once in a lifetime experience. >> shooting my camera and i said, look, mr. obama. i said, yes, obama. >> the restaurant says the president ordered enough for 14 people and spent $160. well, a small plane carrying marijuana strayed into president obama's airspace. air force jets escorted the plane to the long beach airport. the pilot was detained for

questioning and the secret service says the president was never in danger. a fatal shooting at a federal building in southern california. within minutes of the shooting the building was surrounded in long beach. the shootings took place during a disciplinary hearing when an agent opened fire on his supervisor. a third agent intervened and killed the agent. >> when something like this happens, it i will packets us off. we're like a family. we're strong. we support one another, and we're here for each other. >> now, the agents involved have not been identified. this morning cadaver dogs will arrive at an abandoned farm near stockton. the dogs will help in the search for human remains tied to a terrible serial murder case. 1,000 bones have been found. convicted killer drew the maps

oakland hotel. if successful, the economy inn could be forced to close for a year. now, the city's attorney office said it's a hub for prostitution and other activity. the national lodge was asked to shut down because of similar issues. in washington, dc, the house and senate are expected to pass a long term extension of the payroll tax cut later today. congressional negotiators signed off on the agreement yesterday. lawmakers originally passed an extension of the tax cut after a bitter partisan fight, but the extension will last throughout the rest of the year. raising the city's minimum wage. the students hope to gain 30,000 signatures that would put their idea on the november ballot. they say the city's minimum wage should be $10 an hour. it started as part of a social justice project and it has grown in the last year. 4:39 is the time.

let's check in with sal for the early morning commute. >> good friday morning. i think a lot of people are excited about that. let's go to the live pictures. golden gate bridge, they were changing the contusion ration. if you look on the bridge, you see the flashing lights up there. they're changing the configuration here. just give them a little bit of slowdown and caution if you're going to be driving on the bridge. this morning, we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's lite on the way to san francisco with no major problems. there is a problem in hayward. southbound interstate 880 at highway 92. there's a crash there. this crash is blocking one of the lanes. traffic is going to be a little bit slow. although we have been off to a pretty decent start. if they don't get this out of the way, you may see slowdowns in this area. this is the look at the interstate in san jose. that traffic is off to a nice start for the south commute. it's 4:40. let's say good morning to steve.

>> i'm off to a good start. >> thank you. little change today. we had a warmup yesterday. nice day yesterday, but a little system coming by and there will be another one moving into the north to give us a cooler pattern here. partly cloudy today. fog has come back to the coast, not roaring, but there's some there. we're running cooler here this morning than yesterday. we also lose the breeze. that helps. there's not much of one and there's not a direction to it. south and west, it just depends. probably turn southerly later on. system moving into the north, we'll start to knock the high out of here and it's also going to usher in a cool air mass. coming in behind that, we'll start to see increase in a little bit of a cooler pattern. it will take us into saturday, probably local drizzle tonight and tomorrow morning. most of the weekend looks okay. increasing clouds on sunday as that comes in. system moving in today and into the evening, a lot of high clouds. it will be a little cooler.

al-qaeda members are likely behind three bombings in the country in the last three months. all targeted the syrian government. u.s. officials say al-qaeda could be standing by waiting to fill a so-called power vacuum in case the president loses power. now, despite al-qaeda's threat, the united stated nations is normally calling on him to step down. the security council made the call yesterday in a nonbinding resolution. 12 countries voted against it including china and russia. >> they're saying the u.n. is on the verge of a moral collapse. a man accused of trying to blow up a plane with a bomb in his underwear will spent the rest of his life in prison. he was sentenced yesterday in a michigan court.

he pled guilty to trying to destroy the flight. the 25-year-old says the bomb was a, quote, blessed weapon to avenge poorly treated muslims worldwide. google has found their way around privacy settings. their plus one coding is able to place an unlimited number of cookies in user sabrassers. now, the code works around user's privacy settings on apple apple's security browser. they do not allow advertising suppliers to transmit cookies. american express is buying ads on twitter. it's a way to advertise twitter's advertising service that lets business advertise without having to deal with a sales representative. eventually the system will be available to all companies, but to start, it will be limited to businesses that use just american express cards. the ads will appear late next

welcome back to the ktvu morning news. scientists are looking for explanations of earthquakes. they hit within hours of each other south of vallejo. the latest one happened yesterday morning. both earthquakes happened on the franklin fault. this is unusual because there are not a lot of earthquakes of this magnitude on that fault. seismologist hope the dig trenches to learn more about the history of the vault. the new threat, the sea

otter population. the number of otters attacked by sharks has skyrocketed in the past few years. about 10% of the dead sea otters had shark bites. today it's about 30%. researchers are not sure why the number has jumped, but they do say sharks are now the largest threat to the survival of that endangered species. new this morning, armed robbers snatched dozens of artifacts from a historic museum in greece. it's in ancient olympia. investigators say the thieves tied up a museum employee and took at least 60 ancient artifacts. the minister resigned after the robbery. closer to home, a fire caused major damage to san jose history. the fire started at the kelly house. it belonged to one of the pioneer families. 50 to 60% of the house was damaged but they managed to save some of the historic
