yesterday was sunshine and temperatures warmed up. high bands going by and overall it will be partly sunny to mostly sunny. the clouds will clear out fast. they're racing along. there's a system at the top of your screen that's going to push in. 50s and low to mid-60s. here's sal. highway 4, getting slow traffic coming up to the willow pass. no major problems coming up to concord. you will see slow traffic on 680. this morning's commute is going to be slow in some areas. along northbound 280 at 17, it does look good. in case you have not heard, the bay bridge westbound will be closed starting tonight. why is it happening and what's going on now at the bay bridge toll plaza. let's go to tara moriarty. >> good morning. if you have not noticed the signs along the freeway over the past two weeks, the bay

bridge westbound lanes will be shut down tonight and they will reopen on tuesday morning at 5:00. this is the strip we're talking about where crews will be on the toll plaza. they will be installing new barriers and railings. then they're going to demolish a section of the road, clearing the way for the opening of the new stand. we spoke to one woman from richmond who said she doesn't expect to see traffic on the richmond bridge but people she knows will take public transportation. >> is this going to affect you? >> not at all. >> how come? >> i will be at the racetrack. >> so you're going to avoid all the has sell and mess. >> i will be up watching the traffic, if there be any. >> this closure means heavier traffic on the golden gate bridge as well. give yourself flynn of time this weekend. if you're headed out of town, lake tahoe or something, monday night you will most likely

it's going to be like this until president obama takes off. but on most accounts, it turns out his visit to san francisco was successful and a lucrative one. estimated 2500 people attended the event in nob hill. in his specious he talks about education and don't ask don't tell and spent a lot of time on the economy, asking voters to stick with him. >> if you're willing to work even harder than you were in 2008, then we're going to finish what we started. stand with me, walk with me,ing or with me, hope with me, and we will remind the world just why it is that america is the greatest nation on earth. god bless you. and god bless this country of

ours. >> mr. obama got a lot applause. outbursts over deep oil drilling and 100 protesters gathered outside. the masonic event was one of three. he attended events at mark hopkins and a private home in pacific heights. he was in l.a. on wednesday. thursday was all about san francisco. this morning he's going to take off and head up to washington washington state. he will be in d.c. by tonight. it will be like this until he takes off from here. he's scheduled to leave at 9:00 a.m. ktvu, channel 2 news. time is 6:05. overnight several people are homeless after a fire. it happened just before 1:00 this morning at a tri-plex on danville boulevard. firefighters quickly got to the scene and put out the flames fast.

luckily no one was hurt. investigators say a smoke detector notified a woman of the fire in one of the units. it's believed the fire started in a kitchen, possibly from a heater. the the red cross is helping out those families that have been affected. >> police investigating another report of a man in a fan approaching a young girl. the latest incident happened tuesday outside the fairfax market when sir francis drake boulevard. a mother watched as a man tried to lower her 10-year-old daughter into his white van. he's described as a white man in his late 40s with slicked back brown hair. police say a man with a similar description tried to lure a girl into his white van with a bus stop next week. a shooting in broad daylight left a teenager dead. the unidentified teenager was shot several times around 4:00 yesterday afternoon on 81 81st street in birch. she was pronounced dead at the

scene. so far there's no known motive in the killing and no arrests have been made. pg&e is expecting a big fine for its role in the san bruno pipeline disaster. ceo has told investigators that he -- investors that he expects to be fined several million dollars. state regulators are now deciding how much pg&e can charge customers to help pay for a proposed $2.2 billion pipeline improvement plan. >> time now, 6:07, the republican candidates for president have canceled one of the big debates they had scheduled before the big primary on march 6th. the speculation on why it was canceled and the one candidate who says the others are just afraid to get on stage with him. 6:07 is the time. time to check back in with sal. how is the commute so far, sal?

>> looking pretty good. i'm always looking to see if something pops up right when i say that. i don't want to jinx it. is far so good. let's look at the bay bridge. of course you know it's going to close today in the westbound direction at 8:00 p.m. the traffic continues to look good coming into san francisco. no major problems on the lower deck. also, the morning commute is looking good in san francisco. the drive is nice and smooth from san francisco airport all the way up to highway 101 at the 80 split. and this morning the you're driving in costa county, stop and go traffic and also on per da pass road. let's go to steve. happy friday, everybody. cooler pattern today. high clouds coming through. they will clear out pretty fast. look to the top left of your screen. that's the system that's coming through later on. it's going to push in some

clouds. i have not seen any flags yet. the flight advisory is good on that. so far everything looks good to go for all these airports. the higher clouds will get out pretty fast. the system to the north is giving us a westerly component. mostly sunny today but low clouds towards the coast. by this evening. the fog will be on the move and drizzle is possible tonight and tomorrow morning or very light rain to the north. remember the last two systems we had on monday and early wednesday morning, they both made it. the forecast model completely missed them. the third time is the charge here. mostly sunny by noon, but we'll start to see the low cloud deck pushed in. 35 in fairfield. concord in there, livermore. san rafael, santa rosa. the warmest is 48. other wise, it's a lot of low 40s. the one system moves out fast and it will be gone here real quick, but there's clouds

below. that the next system coming in will usher in a lot of low clouds. by 10:00 we're sunny and it's good to go. by 5:00, here comes that system approaching and that's going to ramp up the fog bank and by late tonight, tomorrow morning, i think we'll get a little bit of local drizzle saturday morning. cooler pattern sets up for today and into the weekend. mostly sunny, though, fog near the coast, low clouds around. upper 50s, low 60s coast and bay, some mid-60s inland, it temperatures come down three to five degrees from yesterday when we had the north wind. increasing clouds on sunday and then it's out of here and it's cool an breezy on tuesday. time now, 6:10, still talking about more fallout from the infamous incident. it's been months since the police pepper spray incident. how the chancellor is still on the hot seat. one immigration agent is dead, another wounded after a shooting inside the southern

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. new information. several law enforcement agencies are investigating a fatal shooting at a southern california federal building. police say an immigration agent opened fire on a supervisor inside the federal building in long beach yesterday evening. now the shooting reportedly

took place during a disciplinary hearing. police say a third agent then intervened and fired his weapon, killing the shooter. >> we're like a family in this agency in law enforcement. when something like this happens, it impacts us all. but in the face of tragedy and adversity, we're strong. we support one another, and we're here for each other. >> the agent who was injured underwent surgery and is in stable condition. also new this morning, israel's counterterrorism agency issued a warning. it says iran and hezbolah are planning attacks. earlier this week, there was a bombing that critically injured a -- wife. your time is 6:14.

the republican debate that was scheduled just before the super tuesday primary has been canceled. allison burns in our washington, dc newsroom explains why the candidates dropped out. allison? >> reporter: dave, there's just so much at stake on super tuesday that mitt romney and ron paul and rick santorum all agreed they needed every second they could get on the campaign trail, and they dropped out of that debate. now, cnn scheduled it just before the primaries where voters in ten states head to the polls and 300 delegates are at stake. rick santorum is ahead nationally and in key states like ohio and michigan. newt gingrich supporters are spinning it as the other candidates not wanting to face him in the debate. he's the only one who agreed to participate. it was going to be held in his home state of georgia. now, we are going to see all of the candidates on the same stage at least once this month.

they will be participating in the debate in arizona next week. reporting live from washington, dc, allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. uc davis, the handing of the case where police pepper sprayed students has been criticized. the faculty will vote on whether or not they're confident of her leadership of the school. but that's nonbinding so it's basically symbolic. so no action will be taken against the chancellor. stand up for oakland will hold another demonstration. business owners, concerned citizens and others gathered for the first time last week during an occupy rally. that led to several verbal confrontations. stand up for oakland says it's worried that recent occupy protests have led to violence

and a loss of business in the oakland area. 6:16, they've taken in more inmates than expected. if that trend continues, jail officials say the martinez jail could reach capacity. the realignment is said to ease state prison overcrowding by shifting lower level offenders to the county jails. however, more funding will be needed to catch up. a court hearing is set for this morning for a union city worm charged with killing nursing student michelle lang. a judge could set a trial date during today's proceedings. she disappeared last may in hayward. four months later her body was found in a remote area. authorities say esteban killed her because she believed her child's father and michelle lay were having an affair. esteban has pleaded not guilty. the city of vallejo is

delay delaying the cleanup of a fire that destroyed a building. they say they don't have the money to clean it up. some debris will be cleared and some city officials say they're looking at options to fund the rest of the cleanup. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. time now, 6:17. sal is back. i know you're preparing for what's going to happen tonight. you're watching the toll plaza now. >> a lot of people going into san francisco today will not be affected because the lower deck is not going to close. so if you're in san francisco tonight, it will be okay. unlike the last closure they had that closed both directions, this weekend's closure is only in the westbound direction. so if you're going to the city today, don't worry about it. if you're going tomorrow, worry about it. we'll have tore tara moriarty

the north. 30s and 40s on the temples. yesterday we had the breeze and they were all over the place. that's not the case this morning. this next system is going to usher in the clouds. just a little cooler, not near 70s. upper 50s and mid-60s. we'll go 65 santa rosa but down to morgan hill. things clear saturday afternoon. it will be clearing and cool. sunday morning looks okay. sunday evening looks cloudy. some let rain and after that it clears and breezy on tuesday. >> a new report shows consumer brices are better than expected. cost rose a modest two-tenth's percent. also clothing. it was the first time since september that gas prices are up. the company that makes snickers and 2006 candies is eliminating

a child was killed on her school bus. three other students are in serious conditions, including the two triplet sisters of the girl who died. the school bus collided with the dump struck yesterday morning. no charges have been filed and police are still investigating the crash. a wanted wanted parole ' is back behind bars. a herk lees police officer -- our time, 6:25. an off duty police officer is credited with helping catch bank robbers. he used to work in san jose until he was laid off last summer. well, on tuesday he was in the parking lot of the wells fargo

on santa theresa boulevard when he saw people with masks and hoods run inside. after they came out of the bank, he followed them to another parking lot where the three men jumped into an suv. he wrote down the license plate and called 911 and the police are praising his actions. >> he was able to get a license plate number. if you can get quantifiable information like that that's going to give the investigators a head start, that's huge. >> three men were arrested an hour later with money, with guns, and with ski masks. nasser has been working with the police department, but he is radio in the process of being reinstated in san jose. in fact, he'll be back on patrol on sunday. concord police hope photos will help them catch a robber. they say a man walked into the bank of the west branch about 10:00 in the morning and handed a note to the teller.

time now is 6:30. overnight news, the red cross busy helping several families left homeless after an overnight fire. this happened just before 1:00 a.m. at this try plex on danville boulevard in alamo. ktvu's lorraine blanco was there with a look inside that damaged building. good morning, lorraine. >> good morning, dave. a couple of the tenants tried to put the fire out themselves before firefighters arrived. you can see the hose pulled out that they draped out to the second floor unit. that's where the fire started. lease take a look at the picture one of the tenants took from the inside. you can see quite a charred mess. firefighters got to this alamo tri-plex just before 1:00 a.m. a single mother and her two children lived in the unit where the fire started near a heater. all residents got out safely things to a working smoke

detector. he said don't be fooled by the outside of the home. much of the home up stairs will need repairs. >> there was probably seven or eight police cars, three or four fire tracks. it was a zoo. it was quite a mess. it all started around midnight and lasted two or three hours. so it was quite the spectacle out here. >> the american red cross is helping some of those tenants with shelter this morning. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. that's no estimate on the cost of damages. there were no injuries and firefighters want to stress that that has a lot to do with that working smoke detector. reporting live in alamo, lorraine blanco, channel 2 news, ktvu. president obama is waking up in san francisco this morning after a whirlwind day with three appearances. >> our economy is getting stronger. the reover is accelerating, america is coming back. >> security is tight around the

president's hotel this morning. take a look. coming up at 6:43, we're going to have a live report with where the president is headed next. some people in san francisco had quite a surprise with president obama when he stopped in a chinatown restaurant to pick up some lunch. workers at the great east restaurant said they had no idea the president was going to stop by. the president came right into the restaurant, ordered takeout and chatted with diners and posted for pictures. >> it's very exciting to meet the president of the united states. it's like a once in a lifetime experience. >> started shooting my camera and i said, look, mr. obama, i said, yes, obama. >> they were pretty happy. the restaurant says the president ordered enough for 14 people, spent about $160. your time, 6:43, new information on a deadly attempted burglary in antioch. a richmond woman has now been

charged in the case. on monday, a homeowner shot and killed a man after he said the man tried to break into his house. now the police say they've captured -- for her role in the crime. investigators say morris was with the would-be burglary when they tried to break into the house but ran way from the scene when the home oner fired his gun. she was since arrested and is being held on bail. this morning cadaver dogs will arrive at an abandoned farm in stockton. those dogs will help in the search for human remains tied to a terrifying terrifying serial murder case. convicted killer wesly sherman thyme drew the maps leading authorities to this area. his ex-wife is sharing her disturbing memories. she did not want to show her face on camera. >> he was very hot headed. he was into the drugs when he

bay bridge closure, click on the bay bridge section of our website,. time now for sal. you're our cleanup hitter. >> now stepping up to the plate. good morning, everyone. we're watching the bay bridge. i think obviously if you work in san francisco, you don't have to worry about it unless you're going tomorrow. if you're just going today on your normal day and you're not going to be here for the weekend, it shouldn't affect you too much. the lower deck, if you take your car into the city, it will not be closed. you will be able to get your car out of the city and come back to the east bay. no problems here if you're watching from oakland, north and southbound, also interstate 580 looks good. as we look at interstate 80, it's a nice looking drive. if you're driving towards the south bay from hayward to fremont into san jose, that's still a nice drive.

>> thank you, sal. happy friday. a little system going by. they will clear out pretty fast. there are lower clouds and more of a westerly breeze is kicking in. the higher clouds were painted over us but now they're racing from the peninsula to is south bay. but there are lower clouds underneath that. the combination of the two are going to give us a cooldown. now, san jose at 66. we'll bring these temples down towards the north bay and coast, but the trend will be the bring temperatures down over the next couple of days. 59 san francisco and 64 for livermore and also san jose. the clouds coming in are not much of a big deal, but this system right there is. that's going to start working into our weather later this afternoon and tonight. mostly sunny today, but there's clouds on the coast. it will be cooler and more of a pronounced westerly breeze. coastal fog will be back tonight. rain to the north.

30s on the temps. maybe they will start to drop now as the system goes by and you get clearing near the north bay. 30s and 40s. and the system that's going through now is almost out of the picture, but the next one upstream will push in the fog. i think by the coast you will notice a little bit on the cloud deck. through the day, most of it looks good. look what happens this i think. there's the fog and overnight tonight into saturday morning, i think we'll have a will the of low clouds and a possibility of drizzle as the system slides by. possibility of showers as well. this is a weak system. the one coming in on sunday looks to be stronger. that's going to give us a cool down. probably not much in the way of rain. mostly sunny today. fog near the coast, though. temperatures coming down as you saw. 60s for summer. 50s, still holding on to 60s, but along the coast, cooler with 50s and 60s.

was hurt. president obama is wrapping up his visit to san francisco. after appearing at three fundraisers in the city yesterday, the president is due to fly out at 9:00 this morning. that's where claude dean wong is. you can see the air force one parked waiting for the president to arrive. he's supposed to take off at 9:00 this morning. we're going to head out there, but i want to show you the scene out where we are at the airport. there's a lot of stuff that has to to happen before they let the media out there. the prose usually rides on that bus and then you have all the live trucks. what they're going to do is a security sweep in the next few minutes. they will make sure all the equipment is safe and then they will take us over to the tarmac

at air force one for when the president leaves. the president is in san francisco. i want to show you video we've shot, san francisco police have shut down several blocks in and around the intercontinental hotel. the president is waking up there this morning after a successful trip in san francisco. he had three events yesterday. he went to the mark hopkins, the masonic and a private home, raising about $3 million by some estimates for his campaign. at his speech last night, he spoke about the economy, don't ask don't tell, a variety of topics, but what he really did was ask voters to support him and put him in office. he went to l.a. yesterday was all about san francisco and today will be about washington state. again, we expect him to get here somewhere between 8:00 and 9:00. he's supposed to take off at 9:00 to head up to washington

state. he plans to be back in d.c. tonight. live at sfo, channel 2 news. we have new video this morning. it's showing at least nine people have died and the international community is doing what it can to stop the violence. the security council voted calling for the president so step down. new u.s. intelligence is blaming al-qaeda for recent attacks in syria. members from iraq are behind bombings in the countries in the last three months. all bombings targeted the government and come as antigovernment protests continue in the country. officials say al-qaeda could be standing by, waiting to fill a power vacuum in case the president loses power. time now, 6:46. the house and senate are

expected to pass a long term extension later today. congressional negotiators signed off on the agreement yesterday in washington. lawmakers originally passed a two-month extension of the tax cut back in december after a long and bitter partisan fight, but the new extension will last through the end of the year. governor chris christie says he'll veto a bill that would legalize same sex marriage in new jersey. they passed that bill just a couple of days after the senate approved it. governor christie and other critics say the issue of gay marriage should be decided by voters. six states and washington, dc right now recognize gay marriage. >> time now, 6:47. let's check in with sal. we're looking at the bay bridge. interesting phenomenonnen. we don't have a lot of people going into the city. you know, i think the people are probably going to avoid

being in the city, but, as you know the reason why, you will be able to leave san francisco. you just don't be able to get into san francisco after 8:00 tonight until tuesday at five. some people don't want to deal with it at all. this morning's commute on interstate 880 looks pretty good if you're driving south to the san mateo bridge, it looks pretty good headed that way. of course we're looking a little bit farther down to the south as we look at 880. we have a lighter commute generally. remember, it is the president's day weekend. some people may not be working today, making it a four-day weekend. a little system going by and not a big deal, but it will clear out pretty fast and we'll have mostly sunny weather here in the morning. there's a little bit of low clouds starting to work their way back and it's a sign it will be cooler. already the clouds are thinning out rapidly. partly cloudy here in the morning and not seeing any of

welcome back to the ktvu channel the 2 morning news. i want to take you live to new york. dow jones up 34 points despite a jump in inflation because of gas prices. >> time now, 6:53, shark attacks are now the biggest threat to the survival of sea otters. last year 70 sea otters washed ashore with shark bites on them. 30% of all otter deaths can now be blamed on sharks. that's up from 10% in the 1990s. experts are not sure why sharks are attacking otters more often. police are alameda are expected to reveal the citations they issued in a sting operation. they were looking for adults willing to buy alcohol for minors. our cam are was there last night when the police put one man in handcuffs. investigators used teenage decoys who were placed inside and outside of liquor stores.
