the upper deck of the bay bridge. the westbound lanes will not reopen until tuesday morning. ktvu's tara moriarty is live at the bay bridge as local law enforcement prepares for the closure. tara? >> reporter: well, if you have been out of town or you haven't been paying attention to the news media, perhaps you haven't heard about this big closure. it's gonna happen behind me. these are the westbound lanes as you make your way into san francisco. they will will be shut down -- they will be shut down tonight at 8:00 and not open until 5:00 a.m. tuesday. caltrans is gonna begin painting and install new barriers and railings. then he are gonna demolish a triangular portion. now, the chp will have some hard closures right before the toll plaza and this morning they told us when to expect the most traffic? >> heaviest volume of traffic generally occurs right when the

investigating another report of a man in a white van approaching a girl. this one happened near a market on sir francis boulevard. a mother watched as the white man in his late 40s with slicked-back brown hair tried to take her little girl. police say a man with a similar description tried to lure a little girl at a bus stop last week. a fire swept through a triplex leaving some homeless. lorraine blanco is live with more. >> reporter: a single mother actually woke up all of the tentants. they jumped right into action. two of them grabbed the five extinguisher. they also grabbed this -- fire extinguisher and they also

grabbed this before firefighters arrived. a mother and her two children lived in the unit where the fire started in the kitchen near a heater. in all, eight tenants got out safely thanks to a working smoke detectors. one tenant tried to fight the flames initially and the firefighters got here just in time. >> they came in here drenching full blast, got it out. it was pretty bad. it was pretty scary. luckily, we got everyone out. it turned out okay, i guess. >> reporter: now, here's a picture lawson took on his iphone from the inside of the home. you can see a lot of belongings burnt black. the cause of investigation is still under investigation. there's no injuries because of the working smoke detector. lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:04. facebook is asking the city of menlo park to be more

reasonable in its demands. facebook hopes to triple its work force by the end of the year. but first, they have to get approval from the menlo park city council. council members have been coming up with a list of community benefits. however, the "mercury news" reports that facebook could walk away from talks if the demands are too excessive. pg&e is expecting a big fine for its role in the san bruno pipeline executive. the cfo says he expects the company to be fined at least $2 million. the state recently determined that pg&e's violation of state and federal safety laws led to the 2010 pipeline explosion and fire. state regulators are now deciding how much pg&e can charge customers to help pay for a proposed $2.2 billion pipeline improvement plan. the public is invited to

searching for more suspects. one of the two suspects may have been provided training in the use of explosives to the three iranian men who were arrested in thailand this week. the second new suspect rented a house where explosives were found with an iranian woman. the house was destroyed when the explosives detonated prematurely. one of the iranian men now arrested lost both of his legs in the explosion. an armed robbers -- armed robbers snatched dozens of artifacts from an historic museum in greece. the building is where the lighting of the torch is scheduled to take place in may. the thieves tied up a museum employee and took at least 60 historic artifacts. the country's cultural minister resigned after the robbery. 7:14. a janitor at the biotech company again anyone tech now faces charges of stealing laptop computers. surveillance video led to the

arrest of the man last week. the san mateo county d.a. says he stole 41 laptop computers between february of last year and the day he was arrested. police say the man was sending those computers to his family overseas. a central valley school district is separating the sexes, hoping to raise student performance. stockton says it will offer an all i would boys' class -- all boys' class at the middle schools. it won't be voluntary. the students will have to volunteer to take part. the district is starting this program because boys have lower test scores in graduation rates than girls and they need extra know cuss so they can catch up. this is modeled after a similar program in long beach. 7:15. uc davis faculty members are voting on the chancellor's leadership. her handling of last november's occupy protest in which campus police pepper sprayed students

has been widely criticized. "the sacramento bee" reports the faculty will vote on whether they are confident but that vote is nonbinding so it's basically symbolic. most likely, no action against the chancellor will be taken. the occupy movement is shifting attention to prisons. on monday demonstrations are planned across the country. here in the bay area, protesters are expected at san quentin. organizers want to put a spotlight on what they call the destructive impact of prisons. more information about the demonstration is expected at a press conference today at oakland city hall. also today, standup for oakland will hold another demonstration at frank ogawa plaza. business owners, concerned citizens and others gathered for first time last week during an occupy oakland rally. that led to verbal confrontation. standup for oakland says it is

worried that recent oakland protests have led to a surge in violence, vandalism and a loss of business in the downtown area. today's demonstration starts at 4:30 p.m. and we have some breaking news out of the east bay this morning, where we have just learned the occupy camp at uc berkeley has been raided this morning. we are working to gather more details but you may recall this camp was set up a short time ago and berkeley -- uc berkeley police said they would not disturb the camp as long as it contined only students. once outsiders came in, they may try to break it up. we don't know the details of why they started to break up. we are learning to follow the information and precipitation you more details -- bring you more details as they become available. a store that sells snakes in sacramento is offering the reward for the return of a $500 snake stole valentine's day. surveillance cameras captured the thief in the act.

. good morning. bay bridge traffic looks pretty good here. you can see a live picture of traffic coming into san francisco. now, remember, this weekend you will not be able to drive from oakland to san francisco use the bay bridge because it will be shut down in the upper deck only. now, the lower deck between san francisco and oakland, that will not re-- that will remain open. you will not be -- be able to go through there. if you are in san francisco or any night, you will be able to drive from san francisco to oakland. now, they are gonna close it down at 8:00 tonight getting into san francisco. but don't wait until the last minute. last time they did this, they started closing those feeder ramps a little bit earlier. so don't be the last-minute person and try to get to the city as early as you can. again, ktvu will be all over this story and all over the closure all weekend long. we'll be able to -- we'll be waiting for it to reopen at 5:00 a.m.

them. >> shermantine and lauren herzog are believed to be responsible for as many as 20 killings. sherrentine is on death -- shermantine is on death row. herzog committed suicide. police say 21-year-old xavier watson was wanted in a connection on patrol. police followed him to fairfield where he ran into an apartment. police tried to use pepper balls to coax watson out of the attic where he was hiding but officers had to go in there and arrest him. the police dogs will begin searching lockers at newark memorial high school starting this spring. the searches will be done out of students' cig.

last month pleasant's school board approved dog dripping dogs -- sniffing dogs. oakland mayor jean quan and other city officials meet with several community organizations today, and they will be talking about mayor quan's 100 block safety plan that calls for reducing gun violence by focusing police resources and other efforts on the most violent parts of oakland. today's meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. it will be at the east oakland community public library. also in oakland, police chief howard jordan says his department is hiring more police officers. opd has scheduled several workshops to help applicants with the work process. if you are interested, you have to apply online by march 5th. several law enforcement agencies are investigating a fatal shooting at a southern california federal building. one immigration aiant is dead after shooting and injuring his

super visor. our reporter is live in long beach to explain what appears to have lead up to this deadly violence. good morning, gigi. >> reporter: good morning, tori. the 7th floor of the federal building behind me remains closed as investigators try to piece together this biz star crime t was just after 5:30 yesterday afternoon when the 911 calls started coming in with reports of guns being fired inside the department of homeland security immigration and customs enforcement officer. it's there that detectives tell us an i.c.e. agent got into an argument with his supervisor, pulled out his gun and shot him. the sound of shots being fired brought in a third agent who shot the shooter. the shooter shot him onsite. what led up to this argument, investigators say they still don't know. is it a case of office-place anger turned deadly or could it

. stocks -- stocks are mostly higher on the hopes that greece will get their second bailout package. gas prices jumping in january, pushing consumer prices at their fastest clip in four months and offering a reminder of the risks energy costs could pose to the economic recovery. the dow is up 21. the nasdaq is down 2. s&p up 2. the quiet period before yelp's initial public offering is wiping down. we're finding out new details from the company. the san francisco-based online review website says its ipo price range will be $12 to $14 a share f it goes at the top of that range, yelp would be valued at $840 million. it would be -- it would be traded on the new york exchange under the symbol yolp.

an off-duty police officer is being credited with helping to put three suspected bank robbers behind bars. michael naser is a palo alto police officer. he used to work in san jose until he was laid off. he was on santo ter he rue saw -- santo teresa boulevard come out of a bank. he followed them to another parking lot where the three got into an suv. he wrote down the license plate and called 911. >> some of the things i did i think were instinct ual just from years working. >> the three men were arrested an hour later in salinas with money and guns and ski masks. naser has been working for the palo alto police department but he's in the process of being reinstated to the police force in san jose. in fact, he will be back on

patrol on sunday. facebook is starting to use what it calls verified accounts. that's a system that lets people who have large followings submit a government i.d. to prove they really are who they say they are. facebook says the update will make it easier for subscribers to find and keep up with celebrities and other public figures. once an account is verified, users will be able to display an alternate name, more prominently on their time lines along with their legal names. so instead of looking for stefani germanoty, fans can find lady gaga. congressional leaders signed off on the agreement yesterday in washington on the tax cut -- payroll tax cut. this new extension will last through the rest of this year. and a group of san jose

police pepper spried -- pepper sprayed civilians has been focused on a lot. most likely, no action against the chancellor will be taken. 8:36. facebook is asking menlo park to be more reasonable in its demands. the social networking giant hopes to triple its work force by the end of the year. but first they must have approval from the menlo city park council. council members have been coming up with a list of community benefits that expects -- it expects facebook to provide. but it's reported that a facebook executive told the city facebook could walk away from talks if the demands are too excessive. pg&e is expecting a big fine for its role in the san bruno pipeline disaster. the ceo has told investors he expects state regulators to fine his company at least $200 million. the state recently determined pg&e's violation of state and

tonight is the night, caltrans will shut down the upper deck of the bay bridge for the entire presidents holiday weekend. tara moriarty is live near the toll plaza right now with the westbound -- where the westbound lanes will shut down starting at 8:00 tonight starting tonight -- starting tonight at:00 until tuesday moving at 5:00 a.m. >> reporter: good morning. the chp will be setting up hard closures before you get here. you could see some major anything -- necking tonight at 6:00. the heaviest will be the westbound lanes heading to san francisco, when they close at 8:00 and then when they open again at 5:00 a.m. caltrans is do that finish paving the link between the metering lights and the incline and install new barriers and they will demolish a triangular
