make sure she is safe. this all happened around 1:00 on the second floor of the hospital behind us. this is the eden medical center. they were all about to be discharged but the mother went to the bathroom and when she came back the 18-year-old father and the girl were gone. family and police haven't been able to contact him since them. the baby only weighed six pounds sot father was able to slip off her security bracelet. because they both have custody a sheriff's spokesman said no crime was committed. >> baby was put into a car seat, was driven away and the mother does not feel that the baby is in danger >> reporter: one of the administrators explained the security procedures in place to prevent this from happening. he said the security prosiddur also be reviewed because of what happened.

he explained that babies and parents are given security bracelets with matching numbers to make sure babies always accounted for. >> when a baby is taken from the mother, the nursing staff or any staff identities themselves, makes sure that all of the numbers match up. if a baby is returned to a parent the same process is used. >> reporter: in someone removed the baby without going through that all the alarms go off. in this case the father apparently took off the bracelet. here is the description of the car. a 1996 gray ford taurus, 6euc277 again, sheriff's deputies don't believe the baby is in danger. they just want to make sure she is safe. anyone who may recognize that vehicle or the father involved is asked to call the sheriff. live in castro valley. >> the search for human remains took a new turn.

paul chambers is live at the dig site with a new look at the investigation. >> reporter: investigators looking for a second well and today today was the first time they let cameras in since the past weekend where they found human remains and other items. today dogs spent most of the morning and afternoon inspecting piles of dirt remove from the first well. the investigators say the process -- after 15 minutes of searching the dog needs an hour break. >> the dog needs their nose to the ground so it's just -- it's constant effort on the dog to detect any smells that may be down there. >> reporter: the dogs haven't defected any other items. investigators confident they can now move on. >> we are done with that. they will start filling that well and there has been searching the area, looking for the second well. >> reporter: all the items from the area will be looked at by a full team of sciencists, from

both the richmond and central valley offices with every resource dedicated to this case. >> our goal is to not put in danger the investigation, but provide identification of the remains for the families involved. >> reporter: this investigation is a top priority of both labs, they will work around the clock analyzing all the bones and pieces. they will work and dig this weekend. paul chambers. >> the countdown is on and in a little less than two hours the upper deck of the bay bridge will be shut down. tom live on treasure island with the reason this weekend's work is really an engineering marvel. >> reporter: you know though the construction continues here on the big signature span of the bay bridge on the oakland touchdown side, a structural swat team is ready and eager to begin as soon as the westbound traffic stops flowing.

while it's true there will be a lane shift, how noticeable will it be? >> for most people barely noticed. there is no decisional change, just sliding over a little bit. the lanes will be striped. >> reporter: in the next few days a lot of work needs to be done, mainly this road right here has to be evened out, paved and striped so that it can replace this roadway which is going to be abandoned so they can build the rest of the bridge. >> the five lanes obviously will be maintained but we are shifting about two lanes of traffic that is sliding over. >> reporter: the existing two right lanes will soon be a construction zone. >> barrier system, like what's behind me, pinned in, a barrier wall made out of gate rail. >> reporter: for such a massive project there have been few bridge shut downs which still leave the lower deck open. >> california is the only state that does this. we have engineers from all over the world to explore how we

keep freeways open and still do massive operations. >> i think -- a good job on the bridge. it looks beautiful. i can't wait. >> it's a necessary thing. it'll be a wonderful bridge when it's finished and no, they have done a really good job. >> i know how complicated construction can be. that bridge is a big deal and putting together good. >> i don't know anything about bridge building but, it's good to do it on the holiday weekend. >> reporter: the eastbound lower deck remains open throughout the period. reporting live. ktvu channel 2news. >> and businesses on both sides of the bay are preparing to take a hit this weekend because of the bay bridge closure. >> we are supposed to make a round two thousand tonight. i think we won't. the bridge. >> i say about 25% of the business is from local bay area. we know it's going to be -- it may be slower this weekend. >> reporter: businesses at bay street say the work on the

bridge will drive away customers, in san francisco, hotels warn guests about the closure in advance. and the website has a special section to help you navigate the weekend closure including information about how to get around and updates on the bridge work. >> some scary moments in east oakland as oakland police lockdown a neighborhood. searching for suspects in a standoff between possible gang members. customers at the auto zone in east oakland came out with their ans up after one of the gun men was thought to be hides inside. about 12:30 oakland police say two pairs of men exchanged fire. tactical officers moved in but didn't find them. they shut down the area and put four schools on lockdown, all of the kids were released by wolf. >> many residents say they are struggling to cope with the violence and tonight they met with city leaders and police. they say their families terrorized. >> to many homicides, road

rages and vandals and rocks. >> officials reviewed the mayor's 100 block safety plan with residents. they say they would focus on the highest crime areas in east and west oakland. so far there have been 17 homicides in the city. >> immigrant worker who lost their job at a factory marched today in protest. hundreds walked in the march for dignity from downtown to park steel. they say they were laid off back in january because of the silent audit by ice. immigration authorities found that 200 lacked documentation. >> we are marching for the unity of all working people that the legalization of undocumented is a fight for the unity of working people. >> there is no sign they plan to rehire them. >> the president's three day trip to the west coast is expected to be a profitable

business. he left before nine this morning. the visit is expected to bring in $8 million for his campaign. last month he raised $29 million for his campaign and the democratic party. the presidential candidates must submit january fundraising reports by monday. california pension fund mappingers say one part of the governor's reform plan won't savor the state much money. his 12 point proposal includes shifting pensions to 401k type plans but that means new workers wouldn't be contributing to current pensions and taxpayers would be on the hook for the difference. the legislature requested the report as it waits for a final version of the plan. >> seaports along the coastline are facing a growing threat of sharks. we have the danger they are now facing. >> reporter: something sciencists saw in the bay area, now more and more along the southern coast. research boats going out trying

to analyze why. the new baby sea otter at the bayh quarter cross-examine was rescue injure from a shark attack. visitors can only guess how he escaped. >> pretty quick little animals this can survive. >> reporter: not many can. researchers say sharks are now the biggest hurdle in them getting off the endangered list. last year 70 with shark bites washed up. a leading researcher says the 1980s and 90s sharks accounted for will only 1% of the mortality rate. now it's 30%. >> you take that and you add this increase in and it doesn't bode well for them. something has to go down. >> reporter: they are trying to find if sharks behaving differently now or if sea efforts changing their

drug lab explosion pled not guilty. he entered the plea yesterday. authorities say he and his girlfriend were making hash oil from marijuana inside their apartment. police think what happened is that a butane tank exploded. his 12-year-old son was severely hurt. >> a effort underway in the japanese american community to remember their past to protect the future. new at six we are live in san francisco where people are sharing stories about being forced in to internment camps 70 years ago during world war ii. >> reporter: we are in front of the peace plaza in japan town. here, there is great urgency for the elderly to tell their story. 86 years old but remembering being a typical 16-year-old in
