good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, february 18th. the holiday weekend is here, and so is rosemary with a quick peek at your forecast. good morning, rosemary. >> good morning to you! so we're mostly gray this morning, and a little patchy dense fog reported over parts of north bay. visibility down a quarter mile so take it easy with a morning driver. little drizzle on the coast. we'll be partly cloudy for the afternoon, breezy, and our temperatures will be on the cool side. chance for sprinkles in the forecast for sunday as well. i'll show you the model coming up in just a few moments. we're 11 hours into the westbound closure of the bay bridge, all traffic was stopped last night at 8 and crews are now working around the clock to get the work done before the scheduled reopening on tuesday at 5 a.m. ktvu as allie rasmus joining us live from the bridge. >> reporter: all this work is happening on the oakland epp the bay bridge, just beyond the toll plaza, this area you see

here behind us. right now you can see the crews that have been out here overnight, working around the clock since the bay bridge shut down around 8:00 last night. our goal is to try to be escorted a little closer to this construction site you're looking at to give you a closer view at what is going on here. as you mentioned we're 11 hours into the bay bridge shutdown. 8 last night this is what the toll plaza looked like, i empty exempt for one police vehicle making sure all other cars were off the western span of the bridge. then the work started. the goal is create a detour moving westbound traffic south of its old path and that will allow crews to de mallish part of new bridge before putting the new one in place. office. >> we're still at the pacing stage, so we haven't checked yet but grinding had begun at almost the first moments of closure.

there's a significant amount of work they had to do overnight. and so paving should be the next item that is up. and then there's a lot of striping to do. >> the western span of the bay bridge will remain closed until tuesday at 5 a.m. the work will continue around the clock until then, and initially there was some concern about whether delaying some of that striping that you heard, the mention, but it seems the spokesman says the weather seems to be good and they're expecting an on-time reopening on tuesday morning. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. the work being done on the bay bridge could mean heavier traffic on the golden gate and san mateo bridge. here's the golden gate, crews will make sure to have four southbound lanes open today, even so earlier this week bridge officials warned of delays of up to an hour during peak hours, and right now 101 is okay in the southbound direction. and here's a live look as well of the san mateo bridge.

the other alternate route to get across the bay now, westbound traffic there looks great. bart is running extended service during the shutdown but there are a few conditions you need to know about. right now 24 hour service is offered and it's going to continue until 1 a.m. tuesday morning. but if you plan on using bart else overnight, check the schedule first because only 14 of bart's 44 stations will be open all night long. and trains at those stations will only be running hourly during the overnight hours. get more information on the bay bridge closure on ktvu.com, just click on the bay bridge tap on the homepage. in overnight news, oakland police are investigating two violent accidents that sent people to the hospital. officers were called to a shooting near the el ray nightclub on foothill boulevard. police found a man on the the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest. he was taken to the hospital, reportedly in serious

condition. no arrests have been made. and an hour later there was an apparent hit-and-run in downtown oakland on jefferson street. neighbors heard arguing and then a collision. and at least one car speeding off. the victim was rushed to the hospital. the condition is unknown at this time but witnesses say he may have been dragged several feet. no arrests made in this case either. in richmond technicians at the state crime lab are working around the clock to identify more than a thousand bone fragments found in a well. they are believed to be the victims of two serial killers. noelle walker has more on that and the letter sent to a sacramento television station by wesley shermantine. >> that building behind me is one of crime labs doing testing on the remains found in the well near lynden. this weekend investigators continue their search for a second well that one of the so- called speed freak killers led them to via map.

more than 1,000 bone fragments, clothing and jewelry were found in the first well. a retired fbi agent is expressing concerns that the dig is destroying evidence. >> we have every confidence that the scene was done properly and with the utmost of care for the evidence. our goal is to not jeopardize the investigation but provide identification of their remains for the families involved. >> meanwhile, the convicted killer who led investigators to the welcome is speaking out. we received a handwritten letter from wesly shermantine penned on valentine's day and signed, have a nice day. he calls news reports nothing but lies. he claims it was his childhood friend, lauren herzog, now dead, not himself, who killed the victims and then dumped their bodies. he says herzog targeted victims in modesto as well. he says there are two more sites where herzog dumped victims but he is not giving

any more information until someone offers him something. he says he is not received a $30,000 payment promised by a bounty hunter in exchange for information in this case. shermantine says he never said he knew where that a ward girl was, referring to mckalea garrett who has been missing since 1988. he goes on to say he didn't know what kind of can of worms he was opening up by speaking about this. he also says the search for remains continues near lynden today, and while that is happening, this lab here will be very busy trying to identify the dead. reporting live, noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. time is 7:07. in just about two hours, whitney houston will be laid to rest in new jersey. we want to show you a live picture from newark and the funeral home where that service is being held. you can see all the balloons and flowers that have been left at the site this morning and traffic beginning to pick up in

that area. those planning to attend include longtime mentor clive davis t oprah, and actor kevin costner. coming up in seven minutes we'll go live to new jersey for more on the ceremony. a lot of explosion triggered calls to police late last night in concord. officers say the noise came from the area of mount diablo high school on grant street. around lever p.m. they received calls from residents who heard the blast, concerned is may have come from an oil refinery. but after investigating police determined it resulted from fireworks. there were no fires and no damage was caused. rising gas prices could spiral up even faster after a fire at the third largest oil refinery in the west coast. the fire burned for 90 minute yesterday at bp cherry point refinery in washington state. about 100 workers were evacuated. one person suffered minor injuries. a thick plume of black smoke was seen for miles. >> loud wooshing noise, way off in the distance. and that made me look here.

then i heard the alarms, and then very soon after that i -- saw the smoke billowing up. >> bp does not yet know what caused the fire. the refinery processes nearly a quarter million barrels of crude oil a day from alaska. we have great weather but certainly the bay bridge folks want to make sure it stays that way so they can get their work done. >> mainly dry, but i'm going to also say a little bits unsettled. we do have systems moving through. very weak, fairly dry, looking at just a little drizzle this morning along the coastline. we do have patchy dense fog and most of us have gray skies. the benefit, 12 to 14 degrees warmer this morning and livermore and in concord. we've got winds blowing about 15 miles per hour near sfo. because of the low clouds some delays reported there, from half hour to 45 minutes. we've got a westerly breeze in fairfield, about 7 miles per

hour. 41 degrees right now, santa rosa. 45 napa. so still a cool one but not as cold as where we started yesterday. low 50s concord, livermore, san jose 52, and 51 degrees outside in oakland. 50 degrees san francisco. so maybe outdoors early for the farmers market. you may need a jacket although relatively mild compared to what we're seen in the last couple days. your satellite radar, there's the system. this will continue to trek east but the cold front sweeping through the bay area will bring the possibility of maybe a few sprinkles, again we are mainly dry. by the afternoon partly cloudy skies, and behind that front we're going to turn breezy in some areas. through your saturday, by about 2 or 3:00, it looks like partly cloudy, mostly clear skies in the forecast. with breezy conditions. from 10 to 20 miles per hour. so expect that. it will be a cool, brisk day. and then along the coastline 30- mile-per-hour winds expected. so we're looking at that breeze lasting throughout your saturday. sunday morning we wake up with gray skies once again and look at what is above my head.

this next system looks like it's going to arrive parallel to the coastline but look how close it is. two, 3:00 in the afternoon sunday. and we could see a few sprinkles especially the closer to the coast the you, the better the chance. sunday night drying out again some we'll remain unsettled with this pattern through your holiday weekend. little morning fog and drizzle now, afternoon breeze, partly cloudy size. temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. 59 santa rosa for the afternoon. 60 degrees for napa. 58 for berkeley. 58 san francisco. 59 in hayward. and into the south bay, 60 degrees for san jose, 61 morgan hill. along the peninsula upper 50s, low 60s from redwood city to palo alto. extended forecast there, we're going to leave in that slight chance but it doesn't look like much a few sprinkles possible even on monday. and then tuesday on, temperatures sliding back into the upper 60s perhaps some low 70s. if you're taking a trip to tahoe, i'm fine-tuning that forecast coming up. more trouble four the los

marriage. [cheering] supporters cheered yesterday as the maryland state assembly passed a bill legalizing same- sex marriage. the measure now goes to the maryland senate, which is expected to approve it. maryland would then join six other states and washington, d.c., who already issue marriage licenses to gay couples. however, up the coast in new jersey, republican governor chris christie has followed through with a promise to veto such a bill. civil unions are legal in new jersey, but they're not always recognized. he is offering to appoint a mediator to make sure civil licenses are recognized and treated the same way marriage licenses are in new jersey. but democrats say that proposal still discriminates against gays. in two hours, whitney houston will be laid to rest. her funeral is at the new hope baptist church in newark, new jersey, where she began her career as a choir singer. reporter chris knowles joins us

live from newark with more on who is expected to attend today's service. good morning, chris. >> reporter: good morning, mike. we're here just across the street from the new hope baptist church, where whitney houston sang in the choir as a girl. the choir is already inside practicing. hundreds of friends and family members have arrived already in advance of what is an invitation-only ceremony today. it is expected to be a star- studded sendoff. friends and family will bid a final farewell to whitney houston today at a private service at the church where she sang as a child. >> going to celebrate her life to the standard in which she deserves, and this is a church, and we're going to have some church in celebration. >> friends say they'll always remember houston as that little girl from new jersey, but her sendoff will be fit for a superstar of houghton's co-star

think that at this time we deserve -- she deserves to be honored and just honored and remembered in that way. >> reporter: so we're now told that the family friend aretha franklin will be performing, one of whitney's hits, the song, the greatest love of all. chris knowles, back to you, mike. a man from morocco is under arrest for allegedly plotting to blow up the u.s. capitol. 29-year-old aminee el khalifi appeared in court charged with attempted to go use a weapon of mass destruction of an undercover agent posing as an al-qaeda operative gave him a vest with fake explosives. he was in the u.s. illegally since 1999. the feds started tracking him a year ago and a confidences source told them he was regularly meeting with a group of people arming themselves

with ak-47's. >> now you have a person living in this country 12 years, apparently willing to be a suicide bomber. that's a line that's been crossed. >> this is the second case this year involving an alleged view side bomber inside the u.s. there have now been more homegrown plots in the last two years than the first eight years after the september 11th attacks. president obama back in washington this morning, but during his weekly address he spoke about his visit to the boeing airplane plant in everett, washington. >> in america there's always something we can do to create new jobs and new manufacturing and new security for the middle- class. in america we don't give up. we get up. >> the president pointed to the dreamliner airplane as an example of technology, helping bring jobs and manufacturing back to the united states. he says companies like boeing realize they may not be able to make products cheecher than china, but they can make them better. president obama was in san francisco thursday and friday

before heading to washington state. during his three-day west coast trip, the president raised an estimated $8 million for his re- election campaign. disclosure records show he raised more than $29 million for his campaign for the democratic and democratic party last month. he has a total of $76 million in cash on hand. the fight over birth control has hit a texas college campus. >> here we go. [cheering] >> planned parenthood president richards spoke at the university of texas at austin yesterday to support president obama's recent birth control mandate. that mandate calls on insurance companies to pay for birth control. a group of opponents including nuns and students also showed up. >> he's not caring for women when she's hurting them because a woman's right to give at conception and where she taking that life away. >> there's no way we're going back to the 1950s and 1960s,

when women couldn't get access to birth control coverage. >> she is the daughter of late texas governor ann richards. 12-year-old southern california girl is now in protective custody after being seen eating from trash cans. sheriff's deputies say she was found in a car in temecula after a 911 caller reported her standing naked near the trash. her mother was arrested at a nearby school where she works as a teacher's assistant. police say she had left her daughter in the car while she went to work. los angeles police are now investigating another case of inappropriate conduct against children. yesterday police said a teacher from mount gleason middle school was removed from the classroom after being accused of molesting three students. the teacher who was not identified has not been arrested. the los angeles school district says it's working closely with police on this latest allegation. and this is the latest of

the federal government has taken a relatively hands-off approach in regulating commercial space travel. aviation experts say that's allowed companies to sink and dream big. for 200,000 dollars, a ticket, virgin is will carry tourists to an altitude of 360,000 feet or 68 miles. experts say regular commercial space travel is closer to reality than some might think. >> certainly the next five to 10 years we're going to see a lot of activity with hundreds of flights every year and a lot more people getting to experience space life. >> by law, space companies are only required to provide informed consent for passengers. they're briefed about potential dangers. microsoft billionaire paul allen has formed a company to build the largest aircraft to fly cargo and humans into space. back on earth not that bad of a morning really, not too cold. want to talk about the rain. is it coming our way or stay in

the pacific. >> we've got a weak disturbance that will slide across the area today. a second will slide through tomorrow. and more moisture starved but that slight possibility of maybe a few sprinkles in the forecast so we're going to be unsettled for your weekend. if it's a three day holiday weekend the possibility of monday as well. so a cooler start for the afternoon or the weekend, a warmer start this morning to be clear. we've got mostly cloudy skies and temperatures are up. but the clouds very thick over the north by, even patchy dense fog in areas like napa and santa rosa. a little drizzle reported on the coastline not being picked up on radar. but it is there. partly cloudy skies in the forecast for the afternoon. and we're going to turn breezy for the afternoon as well. if you're going to be out by the coast anywhere from 25 to 30 miles per hour those winds are expected for the second half the day. on sunday the system again right off the coastline could bring us a few afternoon sprinkles, not looking at a lot. but we could see some of that

on sunday and then the possibility of a few sprinkles remains in the forecast for your monday as well. if you're headed to tahoe for the weekend, scattered showers in the forecast for today, snow levels about 5,000 feet or so. so may impact the paths but they're not looking at a lot. no advisories in place and little to no accumulation expected. mostly cloudy and dry on sunday. for us, upper 50s, low 60s in the forecast. 57 expected san rafael, upper 50s san francisco. nearing 60 degrees in oakland. the extended forecast shows you again just a little damp, but not a lot. and this will stick with us through monday. tuesday, wednesday notice that big jump in our temperatures. afternoon highs upper 60s, low 70s some warming trend once we get past monday night. back to you. >> thank you. the world's biggest carnivale bash is underway in brazil. the event in rio de janeiro is expected to be bigger than last year's with 20% more tourists expected to attend.

shut down to traffic. the bay bridge is now closed westbound from the east bay to the city as crews work 24-7 to reconfigure the lanes. and good morning, everyone. welcome back to mornings on 2. one of the major goals of this weekend's bay bridge closure is to shift traffic coming from the toll plaza to the incline. so crews can start connecting the new bay bridge to oakland. but they do not have much time to -- gun last night at 8 and crews want to be finished by tuesday at 5 a.m. allie rasmus joins us live with update on the work. >> reporter: crews have been work, around the clock since the bay bridge shut down 11 hours ago, and you can see construction is still going. this is all happening on the oakland side of the bay bridge,

just beyond the follow plaza, the construction site that you're looking at. later this morning, we're working on getting escorted closer to the site to give you a better look at the work that's going on. but this morning we talked to the bay bridge spokesman, and he told us about the work crews have done so far. >> began also last night with a removal of old lane markers, some of the channelizers, the things that stick up and keep people in their lanes were replaced, and there are a number of other items of work not related to the stuff that keeps us closed that we're doing, taking advantage of the closure. >> there are 45 other extra maintenance projects crews are working on taking advantage of the fact the bridge is closed, including some electrical maintenance work on the plaza itself. but the main focus this week is to create a detour that will move westbound bay bridge traffic south of its old path and that will allow crews to demolish part of the old bridge before putting the new one in place. the western span of the bridge will remain closed until tuesday at 5 a.m.

there was some initial concern that weather could delay that reopening, but as of last check with bart he says it appears the weather will cooperate and the scheduled reopening will happen tuesday morning as planned. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. while the westbound closure is an inconvenience for motorists, some east bay businesses hope to cash in this weekends. the owner of the restaurant in oakland is hoping people will stay and dine in the east bay rather than go out of their way to make a trip into san francisco. reservations are filling up fast for the long holiday weekend. >> a lot of people now with the cost of sort of -- the bridge and parking. people are i think it's important they learn there's alternatives that are just okay. >> some merchants are also offering special deals. pegasus books in berkeley giving customers a 20% discount during the bridge closure. bart is keeping 14 of its 44 stations open to help people get across the bay.

so we made the map for you showing what stations are staying open for 24 hours. right now in san francisco, we have four stations that will be open. also in the east bay there are nine stations that will remain open 24 hours a day as well as sfo station on the peninsula. trains will run once an hour overnight. of course, there's another option for you, in case you don't want to take bart, and that is the ferry. three ferries are providing additional service until the bridge reopens. they're all adding services to and from the city. and okay folks remember, san francisco is accessible. you have the golden gate and the san mateo bridges, and for those on treasure island you will be allowed access to the westbound lanes of the bridge and drive into san francisco this weekend. okay, for all the information on the bay bridge closure, log on to ktvu.com and click on the

bay bridge tab. a newborn is back in the arms of her mother after being taken from a hospital. the girl's father, 18-year-old seagram miller, walked out of the eden medical center with the baby yesterday afternoon. she weighed only 6 pounds and her father slipped off the security wristband before he left. the sheriff's office was called in to search for the girl. then last night she was returned to the hospital and her mother. >> mother didn't press any charges so had to be a -- so the baby is back, healthy, everything is fine. that's it. >> doctors checked on the the baby and she's in good condition. deputies did not treat the case as a kidnapping because both parents have custody and no charges are going to be filed. hospital officials say they will now reevaluate their security measures. a trial date has been set for september 17th for the woman accused of killing michelle le. that's one year to the day search crews found the remains of the missing hayward student.

le disappeared in may and esteban is accused of stalking and killing her former friend. last month she pleaded not guilty to murder charges. a san francisco police officer is charge with felony assault after allegedly attacking a woman at a nightclub. prosecutors say 29-year-old richard soas was off-duty test of the afternoon and is accused of pushing a woman he was dating, causing her to fuel and hit her head. if convicted he faces up to four years in prison. oakland police this morning are trying to figure out what happened in a reported gun battle outside a car parts store. newschopper 2 took the pictures of customers and employees of an honor zone on 100th avenue and international boulevard yesterday afternoon. they walked out with their hands up and one of the gunmen had reportedly ran inside. no one was hurt and officers did not find any of the shooters. police tell us they're looking for four suspected gang members. police have set up a tip line aimed at getting guns off the streets. people can report illegal possession or use of firearms.

it's available in english, spanish and cantonese. there's also a reward up to $5,000 from federal authorities for information leading to arrest in gun related violence. the number is near the top of your screen. san francisco police are warning residents to be on the lookout for burglars targeting their garages and more specifically their bikes. police in the richmond democratic are encourage ising re dents to watch this video which shows someone breaking into a garage in just six seconds. police say in the last couple weeks there have been several cases and holiday city wide problem. police say bikes are easy to sell and hard to trace and they encourage residents to write down the serial numbers from their bikes. the non-profit group is also offering free safety inspections. it appears the lateoffs affecting oakland city workers may not be as bad as thought. the city now expects to let go about 30 to 40 employees.

that's down from the 80 estimated late last month. the city says it consolidated some department serve to save jobs. the layoffs will take effect wednesday. the obama administration is making a new prediction about jobs growth. the white house nose says these economy will add more than two million jobs this year. if true that would be on top of the 1.8 million jobs the economy added last year. analysts say it may not be enough. the economy needs to add more than five million jobs to get become on 2008 levels. congress passed a social security payroll tax cut yesterday that affects 160 million workers. the bill also renews unemployment benefits for millions of others who have been without a job for six months. the 2% account in the payroll tax means workers who make $50,000 a year will save about $1,000 per year. the unemployment benefits and tax cuts were set to expire in less than two weeks. today california state university officials are gearing up for tomorrow's super

sunday. this is when they will visit african-american churches around the bay area to discuss college options with students. during the seventh annual event officials plan to visit more than 100 churches. they will discuss issues such as financial aid and academic resources. they say the goal is to reach out to members of the community who are often underrepresented. your time is 7:38. the weather is good. somewhat cold but -- clear skies and they're doing the work on the by bridge. lots of people have holiday plans so looks like a pretty good weekend? >> it shouldn't ruin your outdoor plans. we're not looking at a lot of rain. we may see just a little drizzle on the coastline and each day the possibility just a slight chance is going to be with us. we'll be cooler and cloudier, we'll be breezy at times. so bundle up. plan like it's february. and you should be fine. giving you a look at what is going on this morning, mostly gray skies, little bit of drizzle on the coastline, and north bay reporting patchy dense fog, which means

visibility down to a quarter mile. could be a little tough getting in and out of the north bay at this hour. that will improve. take a look at the satellite and radar as the front moves through, bringing along just a little bit of rain. it's not a lot. but we're going to have that possibility with us. it shouldn't really bring us much more than the cloudy conditions. behind the front breezy and along the coastline it's going to be quite windy for the afternoon. your satellite radar view, backing it up and showing the center of the circulation here that, will continue to the east. we're camping just the tail end. so that's going to leave us just a little unsettled for the weekend. your forecast here, waking up with a mostly gray sky. by 2:00, three, 4, we're mostly clear. this is when we're expecting breezy conditions to really kick in. if you'll be out by the coastline it will be a blustery derek even with the partly cloudy, mostly clear skies. it will be cool and windy, and tomorrow morning we wake up with gray again. this next system looks like it will be ride be parallel to the coastline. the models are showing us, it stays off the coast but we've

last night. there you see that one lone police officer making sure the upper span is clear of cars. the goal of the weekend is to move westbound traffic south of its current path. that's going to allow crews to demolish part of the old bridge before the new one is all connected and put in place. >> there's a significant amount of work that they had to do overnight. so paving is the next item that is up. and then there's a lot of striping to do. >> the western span of the bay bridge is expected to be closed through 5 a.m. on tuesday. the construction of the bay bridge means it could get heavier in terms of traffic. obviously that's not the picture we're trying to show you this morning. but we want to get over to the golden gate bridge because that is where we do expect some heavier traffic. there it is. earlier the bridge warned of delays up to an hour during peak hours. we're not at a peak hour this saturday morning. but as the day progresses, expect that to get busy so if you're headed that way leave yourself a little more time.

let's go over to the san mateo bridge, one of the other alternate routes. see cars moving across that span. again, not super-crowded right now but it doesn't take much for them to get backed up as people try to get pack into the city. if you're heading back out of the city, eastbound, you can still get across the bay bridge that way. during the bay bridge closure, bart is running extended service but your regular route might not be an option. right now 24 hour service is boeing offered and will continue until 1 a.m. tuesday morning. but if you plan on using bart, check the schedule first because only 14 of bart's 44 stations will be only all night and trains only running hourly during the overnight hours. you can get more information on the closure by going to ktvu.com, just click on the bay bridge tab on the homepage. 14, techs nations are working through the weekend to identify more than 1,000 bone fragments believed to be the victims of two convicted serial killers. ktvu's noelle walker is live now with the work being done and this new letter from one of

the convicted killers. noel. >> reporter: that letter is enlightening. we're live in richmond outside this non-descript building, considering the important role they're going to play in the investigation in the speed freak killers. this is one of lab that will be testing some of the evidence coming from that well near lynden. more than one thousand bone fragments, articles of clothing and jewelry will be analyzed at the state crime lab to try to identify the victims. this comes if a well near lynden, a well that one of the so-called speed freak killers led investigators to via map. wesley shermantine says he didn't know the can of worms he was opening. he sent a handwritten note to cbs13 in sacramento, penned on valentine's day, and signed, have a nice day. he says the news reports are lies, that his childhood friend lauren herzog, now dead, killed and dumped the victims, not

him. shermantine claims herzog targeted victims in modesto as well and insists he never said he knew "where that a ward girl was" referring to mckalea garrett, who has been missing now since 1988. in that letter he says he is not going to be giving any more information until someone offers him something. investigators are now searching for a second well this weekend, and that evidence will again be coming here to the crime lab in richmond. analyzing the evidence could take some time, between a week and up to months from now, before they can identify the victim coming from the wells. noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police are investigating two violent incidents that sent people to the hospital overnight around 1:30 this morning. officers were called to a shooting near the el ray nightclub on foothill boulevard. when police arrived they found a man on the ground with a gunshot 1 to the chest.

he was taken to the hospital in serious condition. police have not made any arrests in the case. and just about an hour later police say there was an apparent hit-and-run in downtown oakland on jefferson street. neighbors heard arguing and then a collision, and then saw at least one car speeding off. one victim was found, and transported to the hospital. his condition is unknown at this time. witnesses say he may have been dragged several feet. no arrests have been made. a lot explosion triggers called police last night. noise came from the area of mount diablo high school on grant street. around 11 last night they got calls from residents who heard the blast, concerned it may have come from an oil refinery. but after investigating, police determined the explosion resulted from fireworks. there were no fires and no damage was caused. the body of whitney houston is now at the new jersey church where her memorial service is being held. and just about one hour. this is a live picture from outside the church. those planning to attend include longtime mentor clive

that is where the construction work is taking place. we'll show you video of that construction site this morning. you can see lots of equipment, crewmembers who have been working overnight. this construction site is located just south of the toll plaza. or just west of the toll plaza. the bulk of the work is happening on the oakland side of the bridge. and the first thing crews did when they closed the western span of the bridge last night at 8 was remove some of the reflectors and sensors on the pavement. but the overall goal of this weekend's work is to create a detour. that will move westbound bay bridge traffic south of its existing path. then crews will smooth out or grind the roadway to repave it. >> the freeway was put in already in the middle of the two sides we have to connect. they'll have done the grinding, paving machines will come in and make a nice smooth transition on to the parts of the bridge. >> the western span shut down at 8:00 last night. this is at the toll plaza. there was no cars at the plaza,

just one law enforcement vehicle going through. while the bridge is shut down there will be 45 other maintenance projects crews will be working on on, including some electrical and maintenance work on the toll plaza itself. after the repaving is done, they will paint new stripes on the lanes, and there was some concern that the rain would prevent that restriping from happening and delay the reopening of the bay bridge. but it appears that the weather is going to cooperate and it will reopen as scheduled. so far, tuesday morning 5 a.m. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. while the closure is an inconvenience, some east bay businesses hope to cash in this weekend. the owner every boca nova restaurant in oakland is hoping people will stay and dine in the east bay rather than go out of their way to make a trip into san francisco. reservations are already filling up for the long holiday weekend. >> a lot of people now with the cost of sort of crossing the

bridge and parking. people are i think it's important they learn there's alternatives here. >> some merchants are also offering special deals. pegasus books are giving customers a 20% discount during the bridge closure. now if you want to get from the east bay into san francisco today, you do have several options besides the by bridge. take the golden gate bridge, the san mateo bridge, on the dumb where tonbridge across the bay. and you also have bart. we made this map to show you how this is all going to work. there are stations open right now, and 14 will stay open all night. there are four in san francisco. you can see them here. you also have nine in the east bay, and you have sfo here. keep in mind, the trains are only going to run once an hour overnight. you can also hop on a boat if you want because there are

near lynden. constricted killer wesley cherem tine drew a map to tell investigators where to find the remains and now he is saying he didn't know the can of worms he was opening incoming a handwritten letter to cbs13, in sacramento, dated february 14th, and signed have a nice day, shermantine called the reports lies. he says his childhood friend now dead killed the victims and dumped their bodies, not him. shermantine also writes he never said he knew where that a ward girl is, referring to mikayla garrett, missing since 1988. this weekend investigators are looking for a second well burial site. >> we have every resource on this case. it is what you call a rush case. everything is being a priority. >> search crews wrapped up their search of the first well on friday bringing in cadaver dogs to be sure that nothing was missed. they found more than one thousand bone fragments, articles of clothing and

there's also a reward of up to $5,000 from federal authorities for any information leading to an arrest in a gun related violence case. the woman accused of kill michelle le will go on trial september 17th, one year to the day that search crews found the remains of the missing hayward nursing student. le disappeared les may. gisele esteban is accused of stalking and killing her former friend last month. she pleaded not guilty to murder charges. >> a san francisco police officer has been charged with assault for allegedly attacking a woman at a nightclub. prosecutors say 29-year-old richard soees was off-duty at the time of the incident last month, accused of pushing a woman he was dating, causing her to fall and hit her head. if convicted he faces up to 24 years in prison. he's been placed on unpaid leave. rising gas prices could spiral up even faster after a fire at the third largest oil refinery along the west coast.
