> >> welcome to "mornings on 2". it is february 19th. i am mike mibach. >> i am claudine wong. and we will get to rosemary with a look at the forecast. >> another great start out there. the clouds didn't roll in, in enough time to keep the temperatures from cooling off. some are freezing. and we will look at the numbers coming up in a few moments for the afternoon, lighter winds expected for today. and the possibility of a few scattered showers on the way. i will show you when, coming up. progress on the bay bridge, caltrans continues to work on it and it is looking good. allie rasmus is joining us right now. alie? >> reporter: roves are working around the clock and according to caltrans, there is a possibility, a possibility. that the bay bridge, western end of the bay bridge could

open early. this is what is going on at the construction site right now. it is west of the lights at the toll plaza and oakland side before the incline. that's where crews are working on creating a detour that will move westbound bay bridge traffic. it will allow crews to tear down parts of the old bridge and continue working on the new bridge. a big part of the work this weekend is repaving the road. smoothing things out. they finished repaving before sunset last night. overnight they started striping. painting new lanes on the pavement and that put the work ahead of schedule. >> things are going well. we have had fantastic weather. we were able to get a lot of work doneful we got into the strapping last night. we are in a good position. >> reporter: caltrans is taking advantage of the position of maintenance projects along with the detour and checking the cables on the san francisco side of the bridge and did some

electrical work on the toll plaza and clean up and maintenance work on the side of the highway. because all the work is on track, there is a possibility the bridge could open early. back out here live, you are looking at the bay bridge from the oakland side. there is no one on the upper deck of the brim. there are a lot of headlights you see coming towards the eastbound side of the bridge. it is just the upper deck of the brim that is closed this weekend. if you are going from san francisco to the east bay, it is completely open. we are at a briefing that is supposed to happen at 9:00 this morning. caltrans is supposed to let us know possibly about the chance of opening the bay bridge early. it is still on schedule to reopen at 5:00 a.m. on tuesday morning. >> live in oakland, allie rasmus, channel 2 news. they will get into the city from the east bay. this is a life look at the san mateo bridge. one of the alternate routes and

see things moving along. caltrans expects a 50% increase on the bridges across the bay area during the week's closure. we will take you over to the golden gate bridge. things are moving well now. and traffic there increased. we know people are using the route and saw major delays about an hour from mill valley and things for now are moving just fine. this is the scene as cars approached the san rafael bridge. traffic on the bridge which connects the east bay to the marin county and caltrans expects the heavier flow of traffic to continue through the weekend. you can get more information on the closure by going to ktvu.com and click on the home page. oakland police are investigating two homicides that happened overnight. it happened at 98th avenue and sea street. they called 9-1-1, reported a shooting and quickly hung up.

when officers arrived at the scene. they found one man in the street. the man had been shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. no description of any suspects. oakland police were called to the scene of another shooting. a woman called police around 1:30 saying her son had been shot. the man in his 40s. was found dead in his home on seminary avenue on hay street. and he walked inside his mother's householding his chest and then collapsed. they believe the victim may have been shot right outside the home. no arrests have been made. in san jose two teenagers are in the hospital with two serious injuries after being stabbed inside a mall. the mall was closed and evacuated at 7:30 last night. they saw three men attacking the teenagers. they detained three possible suspects and both of the teenagers who were stabbed suffered life threatening

. ahead of schedule as work on the bay bridge continues. i am mike mibach. >> i am claudine wong. >> caltrans said it built a big schedule in there to make sure it opened on time. they are not only on schedule but could be a little early. allie rasmus is monitoring the work being done and has more. allie? >> reporter: because they are ahead of schedule, there is a possibility that the bay bridge could open early. right now it is scheduled to reopen 5:00 a.m. tuesday morning. we are waiting to find out if the bridge could open earlier than that. this is a construction site. work has been going on since 8:00 friday night. this is the purpose of closing down the we were part of the bridge. this is to recreate a detour. and tear down an elder section of the bridge.

when they finish that detour, they refinish paving and smooth it out. overnight they started striping. making new lanes on the pavement. so far this weekend, the weather conditions for all the work has been perfect. not surprised in what the crew was able to do. >> the upper deck is closed to do 45 other maintenance projects and checking the cable. and doing a lot of painting. they did some electrical work at the toll plaza. all of this is ahead of schedule. there is a previousing here at 9:00. at the briefing, we could find out and get confirmation if the bridge will open ahead of schedule. >> allie rasmus, kvu news. >> -- ktvuparkway news. we were out talking to shoppers to said it is not

robberies and a drive-by shooting. this is the worse enemy. these folks go out and do their crimes. they continue to do them until they get caught. >> police are looking for two african-american male adults and one hispanic male adult between 20 and 25 years old. police are advising people to be extra aware of their surroundings. >> they are investigating a potential crash. a man was killed on western boulevard cheer chapman drive. they interviewed the driver. investigators are now looking for a possible second vehicle which may have been involved. antioch police officer and his dog were run over. he tried to stop a car early yesterday morning. the passenger and driver jumped out and ran off.

time for the holiday weekend. we will remain cloudy. even cooler this morning. slight chance for a few scattered showers and even a better chance for tomorrow. i will show you the models coming up. >> this morning work is clearing up on the bay bridge. and this is where caltrans work said it is right on schedule. they could reopen earlier than 5:00 a.m. tuesday morning. >> yesterday, the good weather allowed the crews to complete the most important jobs. paving new lanes and repaving the old ones. they still have to paint the signs and demolishing the section of the old bridge that is in the way of the new one. >> we do not have to have the demolition complete in order to open the bridge. the idea is that we would like to have the crews not that close to traffic and not have the potential for motorists to see the work and slow down.

2. good morning, everyone. welcome back to ktvu mornings on 2. >> we want to take you right now straight to this cal trans press conference updating us on the closure of the west bon section of the bay bridge. >> thanks for coming to our bay bridge closure update on sunday morning. time keeps flying by. things are going very well for the work we had to do while we've had the upper deck closed. throughout the region we've seen some issues with traffic congestion. we've worked to try and alleviate them at a few locations. but for the most part, traffic seems to be moving well throughout the region. so again, thanks to bay area motorists for helping us with this critical work we have been doing. and thank you to the weather. it's been really, really good for us, and we have gotten a tremendous amount of work done. we are wrapping up the operations now, should be done in the next few hours or so.

and striping was -- a lot of striping got done through the night. we're near completion with striping, as well. and in the key areas that we were looking at. we still have a lot of demolition to do, and we're not going to completely finish demolition. we knew that when we started this but we'll try to get as much as we possibly can. we're about -- we're about midway through all of those punch list items that we wanted to try and take advantage of with the closure. things like a lot of painting. painting has happened on the west spans, some areas on the east spans. we've done systems testing for the new bridge which has been a fantastic opportunity. a lot of different inspections from i bars to trusses has been done. a lot of landscaping is in process. electrical work, reflector replacement. joint repair, drainage and cleaning. it's like a face lift is being done to the bay bridge right now while we have it closed. we've made a lot of progress on the work.

we're definitely looking great to meet our deadline, and there still is the possibility of early opening. we'll ask you to stay tuned as we update you on our progress today. any questions? >> what's the chance, the odds of opening early and how early? >> well, i won't give odds but it's looking favorable for an early opening. i think we're just about out of the woods with the weather issues we were looking at before we went into the closure. it's looking good but not definite kwre9. >> if it opens early, how early could that be? a full 24 hours, or just the night before instead of 5 a.m. tuesday or is that all still in flux? >> everything's still in flux at this point in time, on opening times. and this particular closure is one where we really ask people to stay tuned. because it was going to be difficult to predict when we would be able to open the bridge. keep in mind that the critical work that we're doing is one aspect of it. there's a lot of other things

we have to do. there are the final safety inspections that have to be done at every location to n sure that this bridge is ready to open. it's -- i know it may sound simple closing the bay bridge but once you close the bay bridge, it changes. and we have to put it back to the way it needs to be to have traffic on it. we have to ensure with c.h.p. that it is that way and then we can open. >> have there been any challenges? you say the work is going well. have you encountered any challenges on anything so far? >> nothing out of the ordinary. there hasn't been anything that's been particularly difficult on this closure. nothing that hasn't been anticipated. so, things have flown very smoothly. >> you have been listening live to the cal trans press conference under way, talking about bay bridge construction, and things look good. they say they're halfway through their list of things they had to do to get done. the big issue is whether that has held up well. striping is also being done and that was another big checkmark they needed to do. so will they open early?

always, of course, you can find the latest information at our website which is ktvu.com. in overnight news, police are investigating two homicides after a violent morning in oakland. the first took place just before 12:15 at 98th and c street. police say someone called 911, reported a shooting and quickly hung up. and when officers arrived at the scene, they found one man in the street. police say that man had been shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. so far, no description of any suspects. >> and just about an hour later, oakland police were called to the scene of another shooting. a woman called police around 1:30 this morning saying her son had been shot. the man who was in his 40s was found dead inside a home on seminary avenue and hey street. family members say he walked inside his mother's householding his chest and then collapsed. police say they believe the victim may have been shot just outside that house. no arrests have been made. in san jose, two teenagers are in the hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed inside east ridge mall.

the mall was closed and evacuated shortly after 7:30 last night. witnesses told police they saw three men attacking the teenagers. police detained three possible suspects. both of the teenagers who were stabbed suffered life threatening injuries. police believe that attack is gang related. a group of oakland occupy protesters are in berkeley this morning for a conference they're calling occupy the truth. a three day conference is about media, and information transparency. and last night members of the occupy oakland movement marched peacefully to the u.s. berkeley campus. protesters say they marched in solidarity with occupy cal members. while some of the occupying the truth, others were occupying the broom. a dozen people brought brooms and bags to 32nd and san pablo tossen help clean up the area yesterday. the group is called the occupy brooms collective. members say the goal is to bring attention to an overlooked part of the occupy movement. >> there's a lot of parts to occupy that i don't think get

officially come out on wednesday. the price of gas has hit a record high for the month of february, and it's not expected to go down any time soon, aaa says the national average price for a gallon of regular unledded is 3.53 a gallon. experts predict the u.s. will see gas prices reach 4.25 a gallon by late april. right here in the bay area, the average price of regular unleaded is already up to $4 a gallon. some stations charging even more. analysts say the price hike is due to the switch from winter to summer gas formulas, and increased demand. those rising gas prices could be turning into an election year issue. the new york times reports this morning, house speaker john boehner is telling fellow republicans to use rising gas prices as a way to attack president obama and his energy programs. boehner is quoted as saying this is a debate we want to have. an arizona sheriff and republican candidate for congress admitted this weekend he is gay. after allegations that he threatened to deport his ex-

with helping them arrest two burglary suspects. carston daniels says she was home friday morning when she heard breaking glass. her dad wasn't home so she texted him saying she thought someone was breaking in. he told her to call 911. the dispatcher instructed carston to get into the closet until police arrived. >> i was in heavy breathing. i was trying to calm down as much as possible. car # but really was in panic mode. >> when police arrived they found two juve niles running from the home and arrested them. police say the two were armed with95. one person is dead after a sky diving accident in southern california. officials say a 35-year-old man died yesterday while taking part in a competition at the paris valley sky diving center in riverside county. the cause of the accident is under investigation. this is the fifth sky diving death at that facility in the past year. house republicans are demanding more information from the white house in their ongoing investigation into failed bay area solar company

solyndra. in this latest twist, house republicans are demanding documents detailing the relationship between solyndra and a project to install solar panels on commercial roof tops. shrine dah went bankrupt last -- solyndra went bankrupt last september after receiving a $535 million government loan guarantee. since then the company has been criticized by house republicans who accuse the white house of playing favoritism. the recent shooting of a federal immigration official is just the latest incident for the troubled i.c.e. branch. thursday's shooting happened outside the federal building in long beach. police say one officer allegedly shot another deputy in the chest, legs and hands before he was shot and killed. this comes as a high ranking immigration and customs official and his wife face trial, or face a trial on charges they defrauded the government. another official is suspected of doctoring his college diploma. an antioc police officer and his police dog were run over by a car whieg struggling with a suspected car thief.

officer matt harger tried to stop a car early yesterday morning. the driver and passenger jumped out and ran off. harger and his k9 partner thor caught the driver but then the stolen car started rolling towards them. police say the car rolled over the officer, then the dog and then the rear wheels rolled over the suspect. the officer and his dog are ok. the driver was hurt, and is under arrest and being treated for his injuries. the passenger got away. a liver more police officer is recovering from a broken leg after being attacked by two teenagers. it happened yesterday morning. the officer was sent there because of a rowdy party, but when he tried to detain one of the party goers, two teens jumped on him and punched him. police arrested 19-year-old adrian manzano and a 17-year- old who has not been identified. both face several charges, including battery on an officer. copper thieves have turned out the lights in fremont, and it could cause taxpayers a lot of money.

police say copper wire thieves have knocked out power to several street lights over the past seven months. the cost of fixing those lights is is eating right into the city's budget. repairs could approach $800,000 by the end of the fiscal year. city council member bill harrison says the extra expense comes at a time when budgets are already tight. >> so it's a quality of life issue. if the lights are off, it's a dangerous place for people driving, people walking, and just general safety and welfare of the people of fremont. >> city staff have suggested welding light boxes shut to make it more difficult for thieves to get to that copper wire. rodeo is also dealing with a cop i remember wire theft problem. last month police say someone stole wire that powered eight light poles at lefty gomez field. a county public works spokesman says it will cost $12,000 to fix the lights at that ballpark. the repairs are expected to be made before opening day of the baseball and softball seasons next month. the san jose planning commission is expected to decide on wednesday if the city

has adequately addressed neighbors concerns about a planned $60 million soccer stadium for the earthquakes. last year city planners approved a permit detailing what types of events could be held at the proposed stadium near the airport. but a neighbor appealed the permit. saying the impact from the noise and the lights had not been properly analyzed. city officials say they've since made changes to the plans. if all the permits are approved, the team could break ground as early as this summer. the stadium is being privately financed by the team's owner. today is super sunday, and cal state university officials are spreading the word of higher education. university officials will spend the morning addressing the congregations of bay area african american churches. they plan to discuss the advantages of a college education. they'll also talk people through the application and admissions process. it's all part of an effort to increase the number of african american students. a group hopes a proposed tax will fund a performing arts

center named after murder victim pauly class. the proposed center would be located on western avenue at the site of an empty church. the group is working to get a proposed tax on the city's november ballot. it would fund the klaas project along with other recreation projects. the 12-year-old girl was abducted from her home in 19 93 and later murdered. kidnapping victim elizabeth smart is a married woman. the 24-year-old tied the knot at mormon temple in hawaii yesterday. smart married her scottish boyfriend of one year, 22-year- old matthew gilmore. the couple met in paris while both were doing mon mission work. smart had planned a summer wedding but switched to a secret destination wedding to avoid media attention. elizabeth smart was taken from her salt lake city home in 2002 and was held captive for nine months. her kidnapper is currently serving a life sentence. good morning to you.

an offensive headline referring to palo alto's jeremy lin. the headline contained a word that is considered a slur against asians. the network also suspended anchor max brios who used the same terrain on air while discussing lin. e.s.p.n. has issued an apology to lin and say they are conducting a review of editorial procedures. just about an hour ago the body of whitney houston arrived at the new jersey cemetery where she is going to be buried. the singer will be laid to rest next to her father john russell houston. since the funeral, the body of houston has been heavily guarded. this morning, the hearse was accompanied by several police motorcycles. 45 minutes ago we went live to the latest up date on the bay bridge work. cal trans says it is running on schedule and most of the big steps are nearly complete. k.t.v.u.'s ali rasmus is live at the bridge. >> reporter: cal trans spokesman bart ney says an early opening of the upper deck is still a favorable

possibility, but nothing definite yet. as of right now, the scheduled reopening time is 5 a.m. tuesday morning. that could change, however. first let's show you what the construction site looked like this morning. all this work has been done on the -- the bulk of the work has been done on the oakland side of the bay bridge. crews have been working 10 to 12 hour shifts around the clock since the upper deck closed 8:00 friday night. the whole purpose of shutting down the western span of the bridge was to create a detour. that detour moved westbound bay bridge traffic south of its old path allowing crews to tear down an older section of the bridge. crews are still working on that demolition. it's not complete yet. but for the most part, they did finish repassing and smooth -- repaving and smoothing out the road around that detour. finishedded that around sun set last night and overnight they started striping or painting new lanes on the pavement. we're told that striping work is nearly done. cal trans is taking advantage of the bridge being closed to do 45 other maintenance projects along with that detour

work. but again, the bulk of the work that they set out to do is ahead of schedule. >> looking favorable for an early opening. i think we're just about out of the woods with the weather issues we were looking at before we went into this closure. so it's looking good. but it's not definite yet. >> reporter: some of the other projects cal trans is working on, they are painting the bridge, checking the cables on the san francisco span. doing updated drainage and irrigation work, electrical work on the toll plaza, and a lot of landscaping. the project spokesman bart ney says it's like the crews are giving the upper deck a total face lift during this closure. their next update is at 5 p.m. this afternoon, and it is possible we could find out then that they are going -- they might open the bay bridge upper deck of the bay bridge a little early. again things are still in flux for now. stay with k.t.v.u. and ktvu.com for the latest updates. >> and with the western span of the bay bridge closed, people

the cause of the crash is still under investigation. an effort to ban plastic shopping bags in san mateo county could be on the way. foster city officials say they are looking at joining a number of cities in that county to enact a ban on single use plastic bags. and charge a fee for paper bags. the cities of san carlos, belmont, san mateo, south san francisco and millbray are a working group on the measure. the foster city city council will take up the issue on tuesday. southern california police are investigating a brazen daytime heist in which the robbers made off with a million bucks in jewelry. sherman oaks police say some jewelers were on their way to make a delivery to a store yesterday, that store was inside the west field fashion square mall. police say when they pulled over to find a restroom, another car pulled up behind them and blocked them in. the two men got out of the car, one pulled out a gun, the other broke a back window and snatched the jewelry. new this morning, an advisor to president obama is calling out g.o.p. presidential candidate rick
