emergency crews race to the scene of a midair collision between a small plane and helicopter that had a very surprising outcome. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm ken wayne. amazingly both pilots survived. ktvu's jade hernandez is at the

byron airport where the airplane pilot managed to make a safe landing. >> reporter: the plane landed here at the end of the runway. you can barely see it from where we are. but the lead specialist would not even comment on the landing tonight. we do have a report from the faa it has a report of a plane landing. this is a view of where that plane landed. the hopper pilot landed safely and refused medical treatment. >> it's pretty amazing. very lucky. >> reporter: these are shots our camera took at byron airport just over an hour ago. the plane involved in this collision landed here. the female pilot is okay. the plane was a beach craft

bonanza and the helicopter was robinson fr22. we're live at the byron airport where you can see the plane landed it appears on its nose. a lot of law enforcement agents out there. sheriff's agency is there. the ntsb will not release the crash victim's names. more than an hour ago i did speak to the plane's brentwood owner by phone. he told me he did not want to comment until an investigation is complete. reporting jade hernandez. now to our other top story. it's good news from drivers. the bay bridge is now open

nearly 24 hours before schedule. crews shut down the upper deck on friday for new construction. the early end of the -- alex savidge is live now to explain the change it is drivers will now see. >> reporter: drivers caught a break with weather that helped them finish before schedule. as you can see behind it, people are driving across the bay bridge. be aware before you get into the toll plaza, lanes have shifted. >> reporter: drivers slowly made their way. because there were no rain

delays this weekend the work got done faster. tonight we were one of the first to drive acrossed the realigned portion that was placed during the closure. caltrans says drivers should take it easy. >> there's nothing new that will require a decision but it'll be your first time through here, so go easy and be safe. >> reporter: crews had been working across the track. they plan for rain related work stoppages but got lucky. >> there's going to be possibly some rain. we need to get that streamlined so bad that if it did rain we could make the work done. we worked really stacking people on top of each other, coordinating the work and it

worked out. >> reporter: caltrain crews took the opportunity to give the bridge an update of sorts. there will be another closure, that will be labor day 2013, immediately following that closure the new east ban will open. and new details on the closure of the bay bridge. caltrans closed the bridge friday at 8:00 p.m. the deadline to finish the work was tuesday. the bay bridge closure caused traffic for people coming in and out of san francisco. traffic was moving slowly southbound toward the golden gate bridge. the golden gate bridge district says four southbound lanes of traffic were open by 1:00 this

afternoon. that's three hours earlier than yesterday. for people coming out of san francisco the situation was just about the same. >> it's a bit much because they have downtown roped off as el with. the 7:00 meeting tonight isn't going to happen. even though the bay bridge reopened early, b.a.r.t. will continue to run all night tonight as originally planned. we want to show you a live picture now at the commute along the golden gate bridge. you can see traffic is much lighter than it's been the last couple of days now that the bay bridge is open. traffic heading from hayward toward the peninsula and san mateo. traffic there also lighter than it's been for the next few

days. you can find traffic updates by going to our website. a 23-year-old man is behind bars tonight suspected of assaulting a killing a berkeley husband in that city's second had had of the year. around 8:45, a woman told her husband that she heard something outside. their home near shasta road. when the husband went to investigate he found the suspect near the home, he told them to leave. that's when he was attacked. the victim was taken to the hospital where he died. police say daniel jordan duwitt matches the matches description of the suspect. police responded to two homicides within hours of each other. the first happened on 98th avenue and c street. someone called 911, reported a shooting and then quickly hung up. officers say when they arrived at the scene they found the victim lying in the street

suffering from a gunshot wound to the face. so far no arrests have been made. about an hour later on seminary avenue and hay street, a man was shot in the face there. police say they received a call from the woman who said her adult son had been wounded. family members said he walked inside his mother's house clutching his chest then collapsed and died. they believe the victim was shot right outside of the home. police did not release the name of the victim but do describe him as a man in his 40s. a 15-year-old is under arrest after what police call a gang related stabbing inside a south bay mall. it -p happened around 7:30 at the east ridge shopping mall in san jose. officers say when they arrived they found two teenage victims both suffering from shot wounds. both are expected to survive. police tell ktvu they are still looking for two teenagers in connection with that attack. many pleasant hill the search is on for three men involved in a -t -- in a

shooting that left a man in critical condition. it happened in a small field off marine lane behind strand wood elementary school. the man remains in the hospital tonight. police say three juveniles were also robbed but none were hurt. espn fired a rider and suspended an anchor after they -- writer and suspended an anchor after both used a racial slur against jeremy lin. the phrase was used in a story about lin and friday's loss. the legend of jeremy lin grew

more today with the worldwide broadcasting of jeremy lin and the knickses. the headline breaking news is seen as largely symbolic as neither european country receives much of it oil from iran. the west fear iran is working to develop nuclear weapons. arizona senator john mccain stepped forward today to support a arizona sheriff accused of threatening to deport a former lover. a mexican national threatened deportation if he went public with the relation. however the sheriff did state publicly that he is gay. mccain today called the sheriff a friend. >> all i can say is that he also deserves the benefit of

any citizen does of innocence until proven guilty. but i appreciate the support he did in my campaign and always will. >> reporter: sheriff babbot seen here has long supported the senator politically, babvue plans to continue his campaign for a campaign seat. rick santorum is now the national wide favorite for the republican nomination. poll numbers released today show santorum with 17% of the votes leading mitt romney by an eight point margin. the numbers respect a 5% drop for romney and a five point jump for santorum. ron paul trailed right behind with 11%. meantime santorum is defending himself after accusing obama of an agenda that's tied to a phony theology. >> i accept the fact that the

president is a christian. but when you have a world view that elevates the earth above man and says that we can't take those resources because we're going to harm the earth. this is an attempt to centralize power. an advisor to president obama's -- the rebuke suggests that the president's campaign is taking santorum more serious as a candidate. they are preparing for a execution. and we will take you to the musical tribute for a philanthropist and founder of one of san francisco's biggest music festival. how about a little coffee

an avalanche claimed the life of three expert skiers. it happened this afternoon. officials say the men were

concord and lodite. the lodite police department reported his death on their website. county administrators used this super sunday to get their word out about college. they kicked off a statewide campaign to talk to parents and students at african american churches. he wants to make sure kids know how to prepare for college and how important it is for their future. if you look at the unemployment statistics about 22% of the people who don't have a college degree are unemployed. if you look at the people who have a bachelor's degree it's only about 6%, so there's a strong message in that. reed is also handing out information about how affordable it is to go to a university. a mississippi lawsuit against facebook is headed to

california as part of a facebook's cookies case. brook ruthlidge tracked her browsing. she said this had happened after she logged out of facebook. the case brings together 11 complaints from 10 federal court districts. it appears apple has outdone itself. a new analysis of apple sales shows the company sold more i pads and ipods and i pad touches than any macs sold. a musical tribute wrapped up tonight in san francisco for a man who devoted much of his life to music. ktvu's laurane blanco joins us now. they say he was more than the financial sponsor for one of

san francisco's biggest musical event. minus the man they played for today. thousands showed up for an ocean beach tribute to the late warren hellman. a philanthropist and major music lover. >> the funeral was very difficult and it was very formal. this is like having an irish wake. >> reporter: the bay area native started and funded the strictly bluegrass festival. the first strictly bluegrass festival hit in 2001. he called it a selfish gift. but those who knew him said there was nothing selfish about

the iraqi police academy where a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb. most of the 18 people killed are believed to be new recruits. the academy was tarted twice before. in 2005 and again in 2009. al-qaida claimed responsibility for those attacks. in mexico at least 44 people are dead following a prison riot that investigators say might have been cover for a state prison break. it appears some prisoners are missing though it is not clear just how many. prison officials say the dead were all killed by homemade knives, stones, or handmade instruments. most of the prisoners are incarcerated on drug trafficking charges and related crimes. health officials say the flu season is finally here. until this month there weren't enough flu cases in the country to signal the start of the season. the cdc says this is the latest start of the season in years.

flu season typically starts in december or january. the cdc says california is the only state in the u.s. that has had widespread cases if -r the last two weeks. missouri is starting to see a spike in flu like illnesses. we're just a week away from the oscars and now a new study shows there's not much diversity in the group that chooses who gets hollywood's highest honor. the l.a. times found 94% of the members of the academy of motion pictures arts and sciences are white. 77% are men. all you need is a plug. we'll look at electric cars and just what can be done to make these fuel efficient vehicles more mainstream. what a long strange its been. where you can find the ultimate tribute to the legendary grateful dead.

the push to go electric most major auto makers have promised to have an electric vehicle or hybrid for 2013, the question is where will we plug those cars. >> reporter: people are adopting them at a faster rate than hybrids when they were new. the first year of sales for the leaf, some 10,000 were purchased in the bay area alone. that doubled the first year of prius sales. helping drivers take the plunge. electric vehicles can use the car pool lane and auto makers have agreed to a standard electric plug. >> people don't have to think about do i need to go to that charger or this charger. all of the chargers will be

able to charge the vehicles that are out there. >> reporter: that and rising fuel charges have generated a spike in interest. most electric vehicles retail for more than $30,000. so potential customers want to know how easy it'll be to charge. >> their number one, number two things is how far will it go. what's the range. and number two is if i need power where am i going to get it. dr.harvard now owns a hybrid. he says he wants to buy an electric vehicle but has held back. >> i think the quality of the car is up now. within the next let's say two years i think there's going to be a car that i want to buy that's all electric but i want to plug it in some where. >> reporter: that's what may be holding people back. brad burman owns a leaf. he also tests electric vehicle as part of his job as editor for plug in cars.com. berman says unlike a gas powered vehicle. electric vehicle owners won't have to worry so much about fueling up on the road.

>> the key point is that 95% or more of my charges taking place right here at home. i wake up in the morning and i have all the juice i need for my daily driving. i've had my car nine months or so, and the need for me to charge in public has been three times. >> reporter: the bay area has 469 charging stations. of the six working near downtown oakland, one station was not. >> knowing that electric car charging is out there, even though it's unlikely to be used as much as people say it is, gives electric car drivers more confidence to go about their daily business without worrying if they're going to make it to where they need to go.

transit plan to speed up commutes. ac transit is holding seven meetings for public comment starting on thursday and running through march 12. san jose officials will cast a final vote this wednesday on plans for a $60 million soccer stadium for the san jose earthquakes. the stadium would be built just west of the airport. details about the kind of events that would be allowed. but a neighbor appealed saying further study was needed on noise and lights. this wednesday's vote will decide if those complaints were properly addressed. if approved the team could break ground this summer. jeremy lin does it again. the show the bay area native put on in front of a national television audience later on in sports wrap. meteorologist mark tamayo says we can expect some showers here in the bay area. which places we'll see rain plus find out about a warm up. dinner's ready.

so far plenty of sunshine for this holiday weekend but we do have a few changes setting up for day three which actually we could be tracking more clouds and rain showers. right now in the maps, the clouds have been on the increase. i'll go ahead and switch this over for the radar. rainfall not here just yet but closing in. rain showers moving in for crescent city, right into eureka and lake counties as well. today we had plenty of sunshine but this was a time lapse looking out toward the bay. you can see the clouds on the increase. low level clouds and mid- to

upper level clouds as well. most observations for this 10:00 hour reporting mostly cloudy skies. tonight we continue to look at that forecast. tomorrow showers. an extended forecast, a big bump in the numbers especially by midweek. coolest locations will be in the upper 30s for santa rosa, napa, we will have a few showers out there. especially for the northern half of the region from san francisco, oakland and concord to the north. even some of the showers drifting to the south bay as well. here's a weather system moving in. so that will produce the cloud cover for tomorrow. some shower activity out there. this will be moving out by late monday into tuesday and wednesday. look what happens, a significant warm up. in fact, by wednesday the warmest locations in the bay area easily back up into the low 70s. could be approaching the mid- 70s by wednesday. then remaining fairly warm for thursday and into friday. as high pressure remains in charge of our forecast over the next few days.

here we go with our rainfall forcast model. that rain line moving in from the north heading to the south. amounts probably less than .1 of an inch. coastal hits at 7:00 still scattered showers. this forecast model not showing a lot but we could have some pop up showers then into the afternoon hours, a slight chance of a shower and skies becoming partly cloudy especially by late afternoon. and then by tomorrow night, by 9:00 clearing skies and that will set the the stage for our warm up beginning tuesday. temperatures for tomorrow afternoon mainly in the 50s. santa rosa right around 56. san jose tops out in the upper 50s. warmest locations about 60. here is your look ahead, you notice this temperatures warming back up into tuesday and wednesday. by friday we bring in partly cloudy skies with cooler temperatures. with your weekend always in view, looks look it'll be cool
