steve and sal are here, we are checking traffic. >> we had a lot of rain going through mop pet and the system has gone through and some very light showers. look for partly sunny skies upper 60s and a big jump in our temperatures in our seven-day forecast, here is sal right now. traffic is moving well heading out to the mcarthur maze with no major problems getting to the bay bridge which by the way is open and incase you are just waking up you may not have heard lanes are open. at 6:01 let's go back to the desk. police in oakland are investigating an officer involved shooting. it happened late last night on 62nd avenue in east oakland. officers confronted two suspects while investigating a street robbery. an officer shot and wounded one

suspect during that confrontation and the other suspect got away. no police officers were hurt but it is still not clear what led up to the gunfire. allie rasmus will have an update coming up at 6:30. >> just about a block away from the officer involved shooting a man was killed which happened on seminary avenue near haze street. the man was shot on the street and stumbled into his mother's house, collapsed and died. it was one of two shootings in oakland and no arrests have been made in either case. they are investigating a distress call and where it came from bucks one that sparked a massive search, the mayday call went out last night just before 11:00. the coast guard reported their boat was sinking after colliding with another boat. they also said somebody had been thrown overboard but coast

guard says there is no signs of a collision or signs of distress. >> at this point it seems like it was a hoax call on the radio and the call on the radio appears to have been a false report are you it is obviously dangerous because we sent out several different crews that could have been responding elsewhere. >> they did launch a helicopter and several boats. once it is daylight, the crews will conduct a different kind of search. drivers going to san francisco, they don't have to detore to the golden gate bridge but it is open way ahead of schedule. tara moriarty has the reasons why they were able to get the span open earlier. >> reporter: it has to do with no rain and the entrance to the incline is a lot more streamlined.

the roadway is freshly paved, there are new barriers up and they had some type to repaint cables. all of this work done three hours earlier than expected and these lanes were not to be open but just after 7:00 last night, the barriers came down and they escorted the first cars across. they wrapped it up because it was on their side, it was supposed to rain but that didn't happen. >> it allowed us to move our schedule forward and the configuration has changed, there is nothing new that will require a decision so go easy and be safe. >> now the lanes have shifted slightly to the south, although it is a gentler curve than before. there is one more closure and that will be labor day weekend 2013 so it is a long ways off. i am tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 morning news.

time now 6:04, chp is investigating a fatal crash at capital expressway and 101. paul chambers is at the scene right now, what is going on paul? >> i just spoke with highway patrol. there is 'ems and firefighters out here, we are told they were taking the east capital expressway off ramp when they got into an accident. there were eight passengers inside police say the roadway was slick and the person was also driving too fast. the car flipped several times and one person was ejected and died from that ejection. people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. and the other five people are

okay. we do know the coroner's office is out here and the only thing that is happening, the only thing that could affect it, nobody knows and once again i will tell you there were eight people involved in that accidents. five people are okay, three people transported to the hospital, nobody was wearing seat belts and of course we will stay on top of this and bring you the latest as it develops and let's go to sal and get the rest of the report on your traffic. >> you saw the crash where paul was and even that closure is not causing a huge delay which is light because of the holiday. this is a look at 17 and it is a light drive and enough people

have the day off so you will not have to worry about huge traffic jams unless there is a big problem. we have a nice looking drive here, northbound 808 is a my -- 880 is a nice drive and in oakland, the bay bridge reopened more than 24 hours earlier than it was supposed to after they did some work over the weekend which was closed and now both directions are open and there is no trouble getting in to san francisco, let's go to steve. we have mostly cloudy skies, there is not a lot here, there are some breaks but right now we may have to do drizzle, partly sunny skies by noon. still some breaks but we we

have to get rid of the clouds and temperatures are mostly in the 40s and i don't expect them to drop anymore unless we get some clearing. from santa rosa to san jose from san francisco out to sacramento. breaks though as the system starts to fall apart, morning clouds for the afternoon, we will start to see more in the way of sunshine. clouded forecast, there is not a lot of rain in this, what i want to show you is after today, one more system clips us and watch how these clouds get done fast. they start warming up as we head to wednesday afternoon and after that everything goes from land to sea and there are some projections to mid-70s for

wednesday. a few light showers and drizzles in the morning and the warm weather kicks in as we head to wednesday and thursday. low 60s on the temperatures and there is not going to be much of a dips here but it -- difference here but there will be tomorrow. and most locations are clearer and warmer and windy on wednesday and then thursday, it looks like a big drop on our temperatures as we go to the weekend. pam? dave? across parts of the south, it knocked out power for thousands and caused big headaches. snow falling kentucky north carolina police responded to hundreds of accidents but the snow is supposed to taper off today. another helicopter pilot walks away from a mid-air collision. look at the wreckage left

the collision forced a helicopter to make a rough landing in a nearby field. however the female pilot managed to get herself out of that wreckage and get help. >> the person who was flying is very lucky pretty much uninjured. >> the helicopter landed safely near the byron airport. the two passengers -- passengers on board are said to be okay. fears are growing that iron is growing nuclear weapons. as allison burns reports they are talking about how the u.s. should respond, allison? >> reporter: the joint chiefs of staff say the nuclear ambitions are unclear. here is a look at the un investigators leaving for iran yesterday. they will be visiting a

him. the supervisor remains in stable condition in the hospital. a new poll shows rick santorum is the new front- runner for the presidential nomination. 36% of republican votes leading mitt romney by an 8 point margin. newt gingrich comes in third with 13%. co bear unexpectedly canceled two shows last week and they said the cancellations were because of unforeseen circumstances. we now know his 91-year-old mother was ill. his father and two brothers were killed in an airplane crash in 1974. two people were hit by a car in san francisco. it happened just before 8:00 near lumbard street. still not clear what led up to

that. one of the finance was in serious conditions. today oakland city leaders will a announce, at bus stops all across oakland. ac transit is putting no smoking symbols on their signs as well. they are ban being smoking at bus stops but the city has never posted no smoking signs until now. 17 minutes after 6:00 back with sal to check in on the roads, sal? well we do have some wet roads out there because of a little bit of overnight rain that fell down. you may not know about that but when you get out it will be an issue. we do have a fatal crash that may have been caused by the wet

roads from one of the freeways and came around a little too quick. this was an ejection accident and paul chambers is on the scene gathering more details but this ramp will be closed for an investigation and in fact they still have first responders there as you can see from this live picture. it looks like one of the fire engines is leaving the scene but they will still be doing an investigation. let's take a look at san francisco, this traffic looks good up to the 880 split. incase you have not heard, the bay bridge is now opened and it was supposed to be open by 5:00 a.m. but they got their work done early. all the westbound lanes are open and you can drive directly from oakland to san francisco. the lower deck was never closed

and the lower deck looks good from san francisco to oakland. let's go to steve. cloudy skies but it will not be a total loss, there has been light rain and there are a few breaks in the clouds, as we move to the north you can see there are some breaks, another system comes in leaving very little rain but most of the rain was .04 to .08. after that moves through we will start to see some partly sunny skies and temperatures will start warming up by mid- week. a few light showers, some drizzles not a big deal. i expect clouds to be there until 9:00 or 10:00. cloudy skies will continue for the morning hours and right there the system is rotating through, some light snow up in

. good morning, traffic is moving along nicely, bay bridge is reopened and in case you didn't hear, this is way ahead of what they were supposed to and traffic is moving well, both upper and lower deck and other bridges are moving along as well. in the kansas city zoo believe it or not over the weekend, two gorillas escaped. >> we heard the giant roar of the gorillas. when we got there the cage was completely empty. >> the zoo officials say they got out and they left the gorilla cage open.

they used water to hose them safely back inside. a wayward goose started a small fire. this happened yesterday afternoon which set off a him acre five. the goose is being treated for serious burns at the human society. they say cat litter boxes are causing a health hazard for humans as well as creatures in the ocean. it cat waist can cause problems that may include blindness and mental disability. people who have lower immune systems especially people with hiv and aides can be affected. they have also affected sea otters off the pacific northwest. well it has taken one year

and an unselfish act in the longest kidney transplant ever. it happened at loyola medical center. it all started with the southern california man who offered one of his kidneys last february and expected nothing in return. a doctor explains how transplants work. >> you can pay it forward to another couple downstream of that and that person can pay it forward to another recipient somewhere else in the country. >> now the chain was nearly broken here in the bay area. a donor here in san francisco backed out and it would havened the chain at the 7th transplant but fortunately another link was found and the chain continued. searching now for vandals

who are throwing rocks as homes and mail objections. including incidents on charlotte way and at one point the rock came through a window and landed near a baby's crib. if you have any information call police. police found 32 separate images sprawled at the junior high. there were both gender and ethnic slurs directed at teachers. it will cost $3,000 to fix the damage and payment over it. several homes were also vandalized. getting around part of marin county can be a challenge today. a large protest is expected outside san quentin and preparations are underway. police are looking for a

pronounced dead at the scene. two other people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. five other passengers are okay. we just heard from chp that that ramp will be opening soon. paul chambers is there and he may have more information as to what contributed to this crash. let's go back to the desk. police are now investigating an officer involved shooting. that happened late last night on 62nd avenue and east oakland. allie rasmus joins us from police headquarters, allie? >> reporter: they have cleared this officer involved shooting which all began when officers responded to a report about a robbery in that residential neighborhood. when officers arrived they found two men in a vehicle that they believed was connected to

that robbery. let's show you the information we have. one of the men in the car police tried to pull over jumped out and started running away and that's when they discovered that man was armed. we don't know what happened at that point and we don't know if the armed man drew his weapon or if there was some sort of confrontation but the officer shot the man and wounded him. the other man in the car drove off and police are still looking for the second robbery suspect although they did tell people in the immediate area they were not in danger. the suspect had non-life threatening injuries and no police officers were injured in this officer involved shooting. allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 morning news. your time now 6:32, san jose police are investigating a shooting that left a young man fighting for his life. there was a report of gunshots

near east santa clara and 24th streets. about an hour later the 19-year- old had been taken to the hospital in a private car. he had been shot at once. so far no arrests have been made. a 24-year-old alameda man was under arrest suspected of shooting a man in berkeley. she reported a man near her garage near grizzly peak boulevard. the woman's husband went outside told the man who leave and went back into the house. the man went back outside again and he was attacked. he died later at the hospital. san francisco chronicle reports lipo did not respond to the trespassing call because they were busy watching an oakland match and they were only dispatching officers to high priority cases. and they are expected outside prison and they are calling attention to prisoner's

33 hours ahead of schedule it is open and tara moriarty is here to tell us some of the changes cal trans has made. >> reporter: a couple of times they worked on this bridge they had to shut early -- early and this time was no exception. the entrance is a lot more streamlined and the road is smooth and they retouched and painted cables. this was not supposed to be open until tomorrow morning at 5:00 but just after 7:00 chp escorted the first ones across. crews were prepped for rain but it didn't happen. >> cal trans got together and said there is possibly going to get some rain. if it did rain we could still make this. we worked real hard stacking people on top of each other

now that the bridge is open. approaching the 880 split, this traffic looks good coming up to the lower deck and if you are driving on the south bay most of the freeway looks good and we still have that crash to eastbound capital expressway while investigating a fatal crash. let's go to steve. very good morning, cloudy skies, all observations say cloudy and still some light drizzle, that was gone a couple of hours ago, it didn't leave much behind, but there are some breaks to the north, there are still a lot of low clouds around. clouds drizzle light rain and mostly cloudy and we will go partly sunny skies and we will have a few breaks as it begins to give us a wrap up. a lot of clouds here some very light rain in the morning, this system is very weak and we are getting the tail end of it.

. developing news in san jose where there is a commercial building, it is on fire and there is still smoke coming out near sanchez. the searcher reported just before 5:00 a.m. which went to a 2 alarm although it seems there is still smoke coming out of this building and we don't know if anybody was injured and again this is on blossom hill road near sanchez. the san jose fire department on the scene, it looks as if there is white smoke coming from the roof of that commercial

building. stay with ktvu channel 2 morning news, we will have more on this developing situation. let's go back to the desk. here is a quick look at some of the top stories. oakland police are investigating an officer involved shooting which happened on 62nd avenue. oakland police confronted two suspects. one officer shot and wounded a suspect during that confrontation, the other suspect got away. the coast guard said a distress call that triggered a call said may be a hoax. the coast guard said so far there is no evidence that neither a collision happened or that there was any sign of distress. the upper deck of the bay bridge has reopened last night. almost a day and a half it opened ahead of schedule.

cal trans says the quick work is mostly due to dry mild weather. in san jose, one person is dead following a solo vehicle crash on the 101 off ramp to capital expressway. paul chambers joins us with the suspected cause of the crash, paul? good morning, pam, family members are grabbing some belongings from the car that was involved in this accident. we are not sure where the car was coming from or headed to. they are taking bags out of here. i can tell you the accident came in at 4:45 this morning. the car was driving northbound taking the east capital expressway off ramp when the car hit some water going to fast. eight passengers inside were in a turnover rollover accident, here is what the sergeant had

to say. >> the roads were wet and the car went off the roadway and at least one person was ejected and suffered fatal injuries on the scene. >> eight people were involved in the accident. >> reporter: one person was ejected and died from those injuries and the others were transported to the nearby hospital and the other five are okay. once again they expect to open the off ramp in the next 15 to 20 minutes. again one person died from this accident and the family is very shaken up. they do not want to talk with us and asked us to please give them some respect and that's exactly what we are doing. paul chambers ktvu channel 2 morning news. at least 41 people were reported frozen to death. many of the victims died in

camps to get away from the fighting and violence and other parts of afghanistan. back here at home, a woman skiing survived after a deadly avalanche. they were in and out of bounds area when the avalanche hit. three skiers were buried under the snow and died. a 4th person died after wearing a safety device known as an airbag. it kept her near the surface. >> there was a very high avalanche danger and those skiers were aware of that. >> well warm weather can lose end surface snow and possibly trig annuation steep slopes. there is a high risk of more avalanches across the west. we will bring you a live report

from thiazin coming up we will have details on the condition of the person who survived this and the continuing investigation. two people were dead after a private plane accident in colorado. that plane crashed at the regional airport near the steam springs ski resort. it was trying to land during a heavy snowstorm. the airport manager said the flight started in texas. basketball star jeremy lynn said he forgives espn for a racially against him. he did not -- racial slur against him. he did not let it affect his performance. on friday night, espn printed an offensive remark about jeremy lynn. >> from my end, i don't care

8:00 a.m. and the morning commute may be affected on blossom hill road near sanchez because of this building fire and news chopper 2, this commercial building on blossom hill road we saw some smoke coming and crews on the scene and let's go to steve. mostly cloudy with light rain. most of you are thinking did i hear rain last night? yes you did. there really was not much, our system is about done. some higher clouds are beginning to thin out. we had partly sunny skies and 48 to 56, mostly cloudy by noon, partly sunny skies and a

roman candle has to come by and that will be it and temperatures will warm up rapidly. already in the mid-40s, 44 san rafael, livermore and that was very light drizzle about an hour ago. our system is moving through rapidly, still a lot of cloud cover which has to streamline. it will keep us in a mostly cloudy pattern and there is not much rain in this. watch what happens after tonight and they keep a lot of cloud cover. we will have some partly cloudy skies and that will warm things up rapidly as we go into wednesday and -- wednesday and thursday. maybe a few light showers coming down from the northwest but not a lot. after today, all signs point towards warmer weather, upper 50s and 60s for your

. happening now in san jose, we have a building fire here near sanchez, these are live pictures from news chopper 2 and just a little while ago, we saw smoke coming from the building but the fire appears to be out. you can see it looks like there is pretty significant damage in this building and it looks like there could be a tattoo which is what the sign says. we will let you know a little more about this coming up on mornings on 2. a chinese court telling stores stop selling apple's i- pad. a court has ruled continuing sales that a popular tab were a

trademark rights belonging to his client, and they are in the middle of a legal battle, they claim they own the rights to the name i-pad. a man is behind bars after a stabbing inside a san jose mall. two teens were stabbed around 7:30 saturday night inside the east ridge mall and police suspect it is gang related. both are expected to survive. one has been arrested but police are still looking for two other teenagers in connection with the attack. they are working with a plan to have additional meters which are needed in northeast mission to ease parking congestion but the people who live there say they will have to pay to park in front of their own homes. they will take steps to finalize the parking proposal.
