"mornings on 2" starts now. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's monday, february 20th. and this morning's wet roads may have been tied to a freeway tragedy. let's go to sal. >> this crash happened at about 4:45 this morning, along northbound 101, the connector ramp to the eastbound capitol expressway. the ramp was closed at 5:00, as the suv came off the turn, didn't negotiate the turn properly. one person was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. other people -- there were

eight people in the vehicle at one point. the other seem were hurt, too -- people were hurt, too. another person is in critical condition at the hospital. several others were taken to the hospital for observation. the ramp from 101 to east capitol expressway has just reopened. the police were able to clear the scene. the ramp is open. no one appears to be using it. here comes one of the first cars to use the ramp. paul chambers will have more on this crash -- coming up at about 7:0 -- 7:30. back to the desk. we're following overnight news from oakland. police are investigating an officer-involved shooting. it happened late last night on 62nd avenue in east oakland. allie rasmus joins us live from oakland police headquarters. allie, is there any word what led up to the gunfire?

>> reporter: that's one of the things we're trying to find out. our last update from police was over an hour ago. we have reached out since then. we're waiting to hear back. this began with a robbery on 62nd avenue and hall street. that's over in east oakland. let's show you the video. it was around 11:30 last night when police got the call about a robbery. it wasn't at a house or a business. it was possibly someone robbed walking down the street. when police arrived, they saw two men in a vehicle they believed was connected to the robbery. one of the men jumped out and that's when he realized the man was armed. here's not clear -- we don't know if the suspect drew his weapon, but the officer ended up shooting the suspect, wounding him. at that point, the other man still in the car drove off. police are still looking for that second robbery suspect. they have told neighbors in the immediate area they are not in

any immediate danger. the suspect was in stable condition this morning. he had nonlife-threatening injuries. and no officers were injured in this shooting. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:03. we're also following developing news from the south bay. san jose firefighters are on the scene of a fire at a two- story commercial building near blossom hill road and sanchez drive. investigators tell us the fire started just before 5:00 a.m. at a tattoo parlor. firefighters battled heavy flames when they arrived. they were able to knock down the flames in about ten minutes. the damage was contained to the parlor. in one was hurt and the cause is under investigation. the bay area commute is back to normal this morning after the bay bridge reopened last night ahead of schedule. tara moriarty is near the toll plaza now to tell us how caltrans was able to reopen

those westbound lanes so early. tara? >> reporter: well, you know, the rain left a big question mark on when this project would be completed. but mother nature cooperated and caltrans crews were able to open up these westbound lanes early. if you take a look behind me, you can see how nice it looks, the road after the toll plaza very smooth, freshly painted. and crews even had time to fix potholes. this was not supposed to be open until 5:00 a.m. after:00, the barriers came down and the chp escorted the first cars across. they wrapped up the work 33 hours early because the weather was sunny. >> we got it prepped up so we could come back on the weekend so we could repave the road and align it and overlay the road on the overbridge so you have a smooth transaction -- transition from that structure to ours. >> reporter: the lanes have

we're at northbound 101. traffic moving along nicely approaching the 80 split. we're watching a building fire in san jose from newschopper2. looks like it appears to be a tattoo business. this morning at about 4:45, the fire department was called to this building on blossom hill near sanchez. the fire appears to be out. the fire department officials here -- the firefighters are doing an overhaul in the area. blossom hill may be blocked with fire equipment but no more smoke and flames seen here. let's go to steve. >> i hear you. i don't know if anyone else can hear you. that's all right. you think maybe the weather affected your microphone? okay. one of those battery-type things. okay. all right. thank you, steve. we'll get more on the weather in just a moment. in the meantime everything it's 7:07. in washington state a skier is

recovering this morning after plummeting 1500 feet. she survived while three other experienced skiers died in an avalanche in the mountains northeast of seattle. reporter jeff dubose is life in stevens pass washington to let us know what happened. good morning, jeff. >> reporter: good morning, tori. those are two avalanches to be cleared. here there a tremendous sense of loss for the entire skiing community, especially everyone at the resort. one of the victims was the 30- year-old marketing manager. these are not inexperienced skiers. quite to the contrary, one was a world-champion skier who was feetured in magazines and on tv. jim jack used to be compete. he was in a group of about 13 people who decided to ski in a legal out of bounds area at if the resort. by all accounts from the people

who survived the avalanche, the skiers were following safety protocol. skiing in route in sections, one at a time. a fourth victim was also buried but her hands and head somehow stayed above the snow and friends were able to digler out after about ten minutes. these skiers had safety gear on. one woman had a device that's kind of like an air bag and when the snow gave way, she deployed this device and it inflated and she was able to keep her above the snow as it was cascading down the hillside. she rode this avalanche out. she was one of the survivors. unfortunately for one of three of her friends, they were not as fortunate. back to you. >> thank you, jeff. 7:09. big question -- is iran building nuclear weapons? new inspections are beginning. a top military adviser for the

there's some drizzle holding on right now. it will be cloudy tomorrow. temperatures in the froets -- froet -- 40s. happening right now, the coast guard investigating where a distressed call came from. one that triggered a massive search right near the richmond/san rafael bridge. a may day call was made around 11:00 last night. they said someone said their boat was sinking. the report said someone had been thrown overboard. however, the coast guard said there's no sign yet of a collision. it is also possible that call

was a hoax. but the search continues this morning. san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi is due to go on trial on friday to face domestic abuse charges. now the wife's lawyer is contesting the testimony of the neighbor. according to the paper, the attorney said her client only confided in madison because she thought she was a lawyer that could offer advice. madison reportedly taped lopez's bruise and her account of the incident. madison is not a licensed lawyer in california. but she trained, according to her website. there are fears iran is developing nuclear weapons.

as alison burns reports, investigators are hoping for concrete information on this trip about iran's ambitions. alley none. >> that's right. the top u.n. inspector says uncertainty about iran's nuclear program has been driving what he calls hysterical war talk but it's really unclear if this investigative team is going to get much more definitive information on this trip. let's take a look at video of the inspection team leaving from vienna. they are visiting a military installation near tehran suspected of housing an underground nuclear facility but they don't know how much they are going to get to see. this is video of earlier inspections of tensions are heating up with israel.

after a deadly riot. at least 44 people were killed in a violent clash between rival gangs and the prison near monterey yesterday. the high security prison is holding 3,000 inmates which is double it's capacity. this riot in mexico comes days after a deadly prison fire in honduras highlighting the overcrowding in latin-american prisons. 7:15. the wife of a federal immigration agent accused of shooting his boss is defending her husband. authorities say 45-year-old garcia opened fire last thursday during a job review. now, his wife admits the couple was having marital problems but she says garcia never expressed any anger before. in fact, she says they even planned to go to dinner that night but said he first needed to talk to his supervisor. >> this is my ficht interview that i'm -- first interview that i'm giving because i want to clear my husband's memory. he was a good husband when he

was my husband, a good father. >> another agent wrestled garcia's gun away from him and shot and kled him -- and killed him. the man accused of stalking nadia lockyer was arrested over the weekend. he's being investigated for the alegged assault on -- alleged assault. "the chronicle qrt reports the chp took him into custody on saturday. charges are possession of a controlled substance, being under the influence and driving with a suspended license. in the meantime, nadia lockyer is in rehab. livermore police are looking for vandals throwing large rocks at homes, cars and mailboxes. the contra costa times reports nine different incidents occurred on saturday.

in one case a large rock smashed a window and landed near a child's crib. investigators believe the vandals are using some sort of launching device. if you have any information you are asked to call livermore police. someone went on a bra -- went on a graffiti spree. 42 images were found at a school this weekend. there were gang symbols and ethnic slurs directed at teachers. it will cost at least $3,000 to repaint over the signs and repair the damage. seven homes were vandal vandalideized -- vandalized. a gallup poll shows santorum is leading 30%. romney has 20%. newt gingrich comes in third with 13%. ron paul has 11%. well, steven colbert will

resume the taping of his news comedy today after up expectedly canceling his shows last week. we know that colbert's 91-year- old mother was ill and that was the reason for the cannesleations -- cancellations. 7:19. there was some excitement at the kansas city zoo over the weekend when two gorillas escaped from their enclosure. >> we were just going over the bridge and we heard this really loud roar. >> when we got there, the cage was completely empty. >> well, the reason the zoo says apparently the staff member left the gate open. zookeepers used water hoses to force the gorillas back inside. a wayward goose started a small grass fire. firefighters say the grass flew

into power lines, yesterday afternoon setting off the fire. the goose is now being treated for serious burns at the marin county humane society. and researchers say cat waste may be a significant health hazard to humans and marine life. a new study shows millions of parasites can be present causing disability. they can also affect otters and other sea life. today, oakland city leaders will announce they are putting up hundreds of no smoking signs at bus shelters and bus stops across oakland. in addition, ac transit will start putting no-smoking symbols on its printed buses.

. coming up on 7:29. one person is dead following a rollover crash in san jose. it happened just hours ago at east capital expressway and northbound 101. ktvu's paul chammers joins us live from the -- chambers joins us live from the scene with the possible reason why the driver lost control. >> reporter: good morning, tori. the highway was reopened about 30 minutes ago. the scene is clear behind me. investigators are conducting an investigation into the early- morning zen. the call came in about 4:45. the chp saying an overturned suv and the vehicle was headed northbound on highway 101. as the driver took the east

capital expressway offramp, it hit wet and slick roadway causing it to flip and putting eight people's lives in jeopardy. >> the vehicle was driving a little bit too fast for the conditions, went off the roadway and caused one car to be e-- ejected. that person was ejected and transferred on the scene. >> reporter: the identity of the person who has died has not been release. we believe he was in the rear of the vehicle. two other people are in the hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries. the other with major life- threatening injuries. the others were checked on the scene for burns and bruises. the family did not want to speak on the scene. no one in the vehicle was wearing seat belts. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. also in san jose, police are investigating a shooting that left a young man fighting for his life. just before midnight there was

a report of shots fired near east santa clara and 24 streets. an hour later police were told the 19-year-old shooting victim had been taken to the hospital in a private car. no arrests have been made so far in that case. a 23-year-old alamedaman has been arrested suspect of killing a man in -- suspected of killing a man in berkeley. police say a woman called him around 8:45 saturday night reporting a man near her garage on shasta road and grizzly peak boulevard. the woman's husband went outside, told the man to leave and then the husband went back inside. police say the husband went outside again. that's when he was attacked. he died later at the hospital. "the chronicle" is reporting that the police didn't respond to the trespassing call immediately because oakland police officers were busy monitoring an occupy oakland march. they were only sending police out to high priority calls. hundreds of protesters are

expected outside of san quentin prison today. the marin county sheriff's office placed parking signs and crowd control gates outside the prison over the weekend, in preparation for today's protest. extra deputies will also be working and people who live nearby are bracing for some inconvenience. my roommate and i are meeting up. we're gonna talk and hopefully there will be another place to park. hopefully it stays peaceful and everything stays organized. parking restrictions will be on place in east sir francis boulevard and east sir francis drake boulevard. teachers who went on a one- day strike back in november will not have their pay docked for the day. but teachers at csu east bay and hayward were protesting stalled raises and working conditions. another campus in southern california joined in the

strike. according to the chronicle, teachers at both campuses were told to report whether they work that day. but when only four members reported not working, the chancellors decided to give everyone a pass. he said the university does not have the money to investigate who actually worked. two people in the hospital after being hit pie a car in san francisco. this happened last night on the em car ba der row near lum bard street. it's not clear what led up to the investigation but investigators -- collision but the driver -- but the police say the driver is cooperating.

60s. everyone will be pretty close. but tomorrow clearing and warmer. it sure looks like a north wind wind kicks in. breezy, very mild to warm and then a big drop in the temperatures as we go into the weekend. 7:37. federal authorities have taken over handling the investigation into the mid-air collision between a helicopter and a small airplane. we're live near rio vista in sacramento county where the wreckage of the collision ended up. >> reporter: take a look at this. that's just off highway 160 just north of the antioch bridge. the helicopter still sitting on its side this morning. again, the pilot of that walking away believe it or not. let's get straight to the video. this is one of -- this is what the faa says happened -- the pilot said the pilot collided

in midair with the helicopter you just saw. the plane was able to get his plane to the airport where he made a hard landing on the that tash just short of the runway. now, the helicopter, it went vate down in this field. why is it on its side? as it came down it actually hit a barbed wire fence with woodp fence posts. the tail of this helicopter was severed off. again, even as you aring look at this -- as you are looking at this video, both pilots walked away pretty much uninjured. the fire spokesman said they couldn't find the pilot because the pilot walked away to a nearby mostist and they were sitting in their vehicle.

. 7:42. an audit that looked at how the mt. diablo school board is spending measure-c bond money is raising questions. the audit was presented to the district's bond oversight committee. the contra costa times reports a taxpayer representative who sits on the committee thinks some of the money was spent illegally. at issue $14 million the district used to prepay leases and another 8 million in -- 1.8 billion in bond costs but the audit says those expenses are allowed. senator john mccain is in egypt. he's meeting with the military leaders there and also discussing the case of 19 american workers facing charges as part of a crackdown on nongovernmental organizations.

now, senator mccain is leading a congressional delegation, it includes senator joe leiberman. you are looking at video of the uprising last year. now, senator mccain says while he will address the situation of those detained americans, he will not try to negotiate their release. mccain hayes that's up to the obama administration. we also have new information about the deaths of three italian soldiers in western afghanistan. just hours ago, the italian government reported they died in a car accident. italy's president says the soldiers were in a convoy when their vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a canal. earlier, nato commanders have reported the three italians died during a military battle against the taliban. there's concern the italian ship that ran aground last month could now collapse under

. welcome back. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. we begin with overnight news coming in from oakland. police are still investigating an officer-involved shooting. it happened late last night on 62nd avenue in east oakland. ktvu's allie rasmus is joining us live from oakland police headquarters. any idea how this all started? >> reporter: not yet, dave. we're still waiting to get some

more information from police. their lastup date was over a couple of hours ago. we've contacted them to get some details. we've not yet heard back from them. this all started last night at 62nd avenue between harman and hallway. police say it was around that time that they responded to a call in the neighborhood about a robbery on this street. when police arrived, they saw two men in a vehicle that they believed was connected to that robbery. one of the men in the car, jumped out when police tried to pull it over and that man started running. the officer discovered the man running away was armed. this is where it's unclear -- we don't know if the suspect drew his weapon or brandished his weapon but the police ended up shooting him and wounding i had. the man in the car drove off. police are still looking for that second robbery suspect.

police told residents they were not in any immediate danger. the suspect who was shot was taken to a local hospital. oakland police say no police officers were injured in this officer-involved shooting. back to you. early sunday morning a man was shot about a block away from that shooting. this shooting was on sem ninary avenue on -- sem-- seminary street. the man stumbled into his mother's home where he collapsed and died -- died. this was one of two shootings sunday morning. a coast guard search is underway for possible voters in the water. this is after a may day call went out last night just before 11:00. the coast guard said someone reported that their boat was sinking after colliding with another boat. that person also said someone had been thrown overboard.

after a private plane crashed in colorado. that plane crashed at the airport near the steam boat springs airport. now, the airport manager says the plane was trying to land during a heavy snowstorm. no information about the victims has been released as of yet. the airport manager says that flight originated in texas. investigators in novato say a wayward goose triggered a small grass fire. firefighters say the goose flew into power lines near the airport yesterday afternoon and that set off a half acre fire. the crews were able to get it under control in just a couple of hours. the goose itself is being treated for a very serious -- for very serious burns at the marin county humane society. the city of oakland is stepping up its battle against smoking at bus stops. today, oakland city leaders will announce they are putting up hundreds of no-smoking signs at bus shelters and bus stops across the city. in addition, ac transit will
