a bay area church defaced on ash wednesday. tonight, parishioners speak out after vandals target the church building and its religious icons. >> police are trying to figure out who vandalized a catholic church and spray painted it with satanic symbols. telling us why the parish priest decided to leave that desecration for everyone to see. >> reporter: mass ended here

with the parishioners having to confront the vandalism. the parish priest says he wanted it left up to show what hate can do. the father told his congregation tonight what happened is disturbing. the wooden cross in front of the church was knocked down. a monument was toppled. on the side of the church, someone spray painted two large pentagrams. a church caretaker first saw it at 7:00 a.m. this morning. >> this is really appalling. and the community is very upset. >> reporter: some were moved to tears. the vandalism occurred on the first day of lent, leading to easter. >> this is the first time i saw

a church that has some graffiti. that's unbelievable. >> reporter: union city police are classifying this a hate crime. >> it attacks religion, and it's done in a threatening way. many people afraid to come here. >> reporter: yet the priest has told his members to forgive. >> they should not react with hatred, or with anger, but react with love, and i have always thought of that the faithful does forgive us. >> reporter: the father says he was touched when representatives from other communities came to show support. tomorrow, the graffiti will be removed, and the statues will be cleaned and restored. at 10:30 tonight, another emotional mass on this ash wednesday. we'll take you to the central valley town of linden, where parishioners are turning to

their faith to heal the wounds created by two serial killers. a four week crash claimed the life of one person during tonight's rush hour. it happened just east of red top road near cordelia, and the napa county line. the highway patrol says it appears to have been a head on crash. highway 12 did not fully reopen until after 8:00 tonight. the accident is days after caltrans crews began working along the highway to widen from two lanes to four. an update on a story we first told you about during ktvu, channel 2 news at 6:00. police have now arrested three suspects following a high speed chase. it began about 6:00 tonight, when the sounds of gunfire were picked up in the bay view district. the chase reached speeds of 80

miles per hour. back to city streets and then onto interstate 280. police say the men jumped out of the car at 25th and pennsylvania streets and ran toward a storage container business. one of the suspects was arrested on top of the container unit. two others were caught nearby. police also tell us, they recover a handgun, and ammunition at the original shooting scene in the bay view. the four republican presidential contenders all face off tonight in mesa, arizona, for their 20th and perhaps final debate. tonight, mitt romney and rick santorum traded accusations as each tried to gain a firm hold on a title front runner. romney questioned santorum's senate vote for title 10, which included funds for planned parenthood and birth control.

it was warm today. not like february at all, we had record warmth throughout parts of the bay area. a warm spot was santa rosa, 79 degrees. livermore broke a record as well. the santa rosa airport actually reached 80 degrees today. 10 to 15 degrees warmer than they were yesterday. some areas almost 20 degrees warmer. as we head forward into tomorrow, we've got a wind advisory that goes into effect. i'll show you the places that that will affect the most, and when the winds will begin to die down. see you back here. a bay area newspaper says it has determined the identity of the police officer who caused the injury to an iraq war veteran. they reviewed ktvu video of the october 25 clash and oakland police records. the war veteran was injured when he was hit in the head by a projectile, apparently fired by police. the express says it's determined that officer is

robert roche. roche has previously been involved in three deadly shootings. oakland police declined comment, saying the investigation is ongoing. lesbian and gay activists are calling a federal ruling today that struck down parts of the marriage act a grand slam. saying the government cannot deny health benefits to the wife of a lesbian employee. the judge said the rights were violated when they refused to recognize their lawful marriage. the 1996 bill defines marriage as a legal union of a man and a woman. a bill that specifically states clergy members are free to perform same-sex marriages is working its way through the legislature. it would also protect religious institutions from losing tax exempt status if they declined to perform same-sex marriages. pacific gas and electric

could be facing a $3 million fine instead of a much higher fine for its failure to produce safety records, following that explosion in san bruno. 8 people were killed that day. many more were injured. pg and e was unable to produce documents about safety informations of gas transmission lines. today, a state administrative judge proposed the $3 million fine. the head of the state public utilities commission had previously suggested fines of $1 million for each day that pg and e failed to hand over those safety records. only on 2 tonight, a shocking revelation about the rate of breast cancer among women firefighters in san francisco. as john sasaki reports, the breast cancer rate is 10 times higher than would be expected. >> reporter: it was a quiet afternoon at home for anita bradley, but on her mind is the disease that ambushed her when she was 46 years old.

>> i did not think about cancer. to me, i'm more afraid of that than any fire. >> reporter: her partner delivered the news to her. >> she said, honey, you've got breast cancer. me? i go no. no. >> reporter: among all women, 1 in 69 will get breast cancer in their 40s. that's 1.45%. in the san francisco fire department, with 117 women in their 40s, there are 16 cases of breast cancer, 13.67%. >> that's always in the back of my mind, i know i've been exposed to toxins. >> reporter: fire fighting is dangerous. not just because of fire. >> we tries as much as we can to keep ourselves protected, but the skin absorbs toxins. there's only so much that you can actually do to protect yourself.

we all face challenges, but seldom is the challenge as great as one that faced a bay area girl. she's doing so with grace, courage, and optimism. we found her to be an inspiration. >> yeah, good shot. >> reporter: a moment of joy for a young girl who has endured so much pain. at 10 years old, breezy, as a lot of people like to call her, is just how you would imagine

most 4th graders. she loves so swim, run, and play soccer. when breezy's left knee started to hurt, her parents assumed it was just a sports injury, but it was something much worse. >> we went to the doctors and like we were in the room, and then he said i had a tumor in my leg. my parents kind of started crying, and i didn't know what was going on. >> reporter: they had to share the devastating news with their other children. her two sisters and two brothers. >> everybody started to cry, especially our 18-year-old boy who he was holding brianne at the time. >> you can be disappointed, but really why did this happen, and what can we do to make a difference? >> reporter: it was an aggressive, and rare form of cancer effecting nearly 1,000 people a year in this country. of those, only about 400 of the

new cases are in children, and teens. >> i wasn't super like scared or anything. i just kind of felt bad for like, like having other people be scared, like my family. >> reporter: chemotherapy started right away, in three months, doctors would need to remove the entire tumor, for brianne, that meant making a life changing decision. >> one was limb salvage. the other was rotation plasty, and utilizing her ankle as her knee, and the other is full amputation. >> reporter: rather than trying to save her leg, face years of follow up surgeries and a sedentary lifestyle, she decided to have doctors amp tight her leg. >> i love to swim and run and play soccer. >> reporter: the morning of the surgery came much too early. nerves were kicking in, as fears about the operation and the reality of leaving home for the last time on two legs set in. >> how difficult is the surgery

on a 10-year-old girl? >> the surgery itself is technically challenging because the tumor has to be removed in its entirety. >> reporter: as they nervously waited for updates from their doctors they shared a special moment about something brianne did the night before. >> she wrote, goodbye my friend, i'll miss you, and she was smiling about it. >> reporter: they removed the tumor and managed to save a critical piece of brianne's bone that will allow it to grow as she does. with medication controlling the pain, they say countless prayers and special messages have been pouring in, as breezy works to sit up, and begin moving her left leg. the overwhelming support has lifted breezy's spirits. >> it's been incredible. one of the most touching things i think of this whole journey. >> it's so good to see you.

>> you look so good, how do you feel? >> i feel good, because i'm out of the hospital. >> reporter: she said she's happy to be back home with her brothers and sisters, and relieved to have the surgery behind her. >> i know the cancer is out and everything, but i have a lot of phantom pain, they call it, when i feel like it's there. >> reporter: a special visiter made her way into the family room. >> yeah. >> so good to meet you. can i give you a hug? >> yeah. >> hello. >> reporter: sara, a world class athlete traveled from southern california to meet brianne, and talk about what it's like to live life as an amputee. >> you made a very brave decision. >> reporter: they say it was sara's story that inspired brianne's decision to amputate. because brianne also dreams of one day completing in an ironman event. >> does it take long to put a

prosthetic on? >> no, it doesn't take long at all. i mean, it takes me seconds. >> reporter: seeing and learning about what to expect serves as powerful motivation for a young girl who has so much more to do. brianne says first on her list, walking, running, and going back to school. >> and probably most definitely, just healing it, so i can like swim at my grandmother's house with my cousins and family. >> reporter: her parents say she is doing well, but still has a long road ahead. right now, as part of her treatment, that's undergoing 6 more months of chemotherapy and has to wait 3 months before being fitted with that first prosthetic leg. we posted a link to her website, following her journey. will you find it on the special reports tab. attorneys for san francisco

attorney ross mirkarimi includes a statement from his neighbor. she made a videotape she made of mirkarimi's wife talk about the alleged abuse. defense attorneys say the tape was created for a custody battle, not a criminal case. mirkarimi's trial is set to begin on friday. san francisco police today honored a dog that has been a key player in a number of drug busts. mack is a 3-year-old springer spaniel honored at a special ceremony this afternoon at the hall of justice. the police department put out this photo of mack. mack has detected a total of 500 pounds of narcotics and helped authorities seize nearly $3 million. temperatures are going nearly as warm.

we've made the pavements faithfully, everything has been on time. we would like to be fully reimbursed. >> reporter: when we asked about the two year limit, the city reconsidered, and said they will now refund the total amount that was overcharged. people using mobile apps are getting new protections. some of the country's largest companies agreed to the privacy changes announced today. consumers must be told what information will be accessed, how it will be used, and with whom it will be shared. a new study says a person's facebook profile does a good job predicting what kind of employee someone might be. 6 people with human resource specious were asked to rate 500 people only using facebook pages. openness to trying new things and emotional stability. facebook ratings were more

accurate than an iq test. a judge from delaware approved benefits to employees from a bankrupt facility. solyndra initially sought to give $500,000 worth of bonuses. the bankruptcy judge today approved a revised bonus request of $370,000. solyndra says it needs to retain key employees during the liquidation of assets. richmond police said the victim of a shooter last night was a 25-year-old rapper. he was found shot to death in richmond. he had been shot twice in the chest. the richmond police detective told ktvu, the shot spotter system picked up 15 to 20 shots fired. garcia's death is richmond's fourth homicide of the year. san jose is reporting that

the mardi gras celebrations were relatively peaceful last night. police made a show of force. there were no reports of injuries or property damage. that's a far cry from 2001, when there was rioting. uc berkely accidently sold valuable artwork for a bargain price. it's now valued at more than $1 million. but they were sold to an art dealer for less than $200. that dealer turned around and sold them for much more money to the huntington library. now uc berkely says it can't afford to buy them back. what investigators discovered that have them facing charges. we go to tomorrow's forecast and take a look at the if five day, which has your weekend in view, and some clouds showing up. up first, we're just

developing news now, we have just received video of a shooting at a taco truck in oakland. it happened at the corner of

44th avenue and international boulevard. services had just ended at a church a couple of days away, and children were getting into a van when the shooting happened. luckily, no one was hurt, but back in december, you will recall, a 5-year-old was shot and killed at his parent's taco truck. 19 uc students and alumni are suing uc davis over the pepper spray. protesters claim the officers were not properly trained to handle demonstrations. the suit seeks unspecified damages and more training for officers. a spokesman for the university says their lawyers have not yet reviewed the lawsuit and can't comment at this point. 10s of thousands of chickens are dead, or so malnourished, they'll have to be euthanized. the county official said 50,000 hens were left in a building

without feed for two weeks. a third of the birds are dead. others were starving. the owner is now facing animal cruelty charges. in news of the world, in baneos aries, argentina, investigators are looking into reports of brake problems just before the crash. argentina has had a half dozen serious train accidents in just the past 15 months. in france, dominique strauss-kahn left police headquarters today after being questioned for 30 hours about a suspected hotel prostitution ring. strauss-kahn quit the inf after a new york hotel maid accused of him of sexual assault. that case was later dropped.

four bodies were recovered in italy from the cruise ship, including an italian girl. the total number of dead or missing stands at 32. hewlett-packard is reporting a big drop in its profits. they reported a drop of $1.5 billion. that's down 44% from the 1st quarter a year ago. meg whitman says hp still has a long road ahead as it tries to recover from hard times. u.s. stocks closed lower after reaching 13,000 briefly yesterday. analysts say investors are in a holding pattern, because new employment numbers are due out tomorrow. a stand against some rat poison. plus -- >> an airplane that has twice the fuel efficiency of a prius. we'll show you the bay area pilot who flew this unusual plane in a live report. plus record temperatures

new at 10:00, a bay area pilot may soon join the ranks of some of the most famous aviators of all-time. a local pilot has been nominated for a prestigious award. >> reporter: julie, you've heard of oroville wright, howard hughes. now you can add david morris. he's flown more than 300 different types of planes, logging more than 27,000 hours. but his greatest achievement has yet to come. >> to be nominated is just kind of neat to look at the list of people who have been on there.

>> reporter: he's now the nominee for the coulier award. he piloted this plane to win a fuel efficiency contest, sponsored by nasa. nasa wanted to see if a plane could fly two hours and cover 200 miles with the equivalent of 1 gallon of fuel. he doubled the pilage nasa called for. >> we've shown there is that possibility, and probably within the next five to six years, there will be several airplanes that will come out with either hybrid or pure electric energy as a salable commodity. >> reporter: the plane he flew uses lithium batteries and an electric motor. it battery powered plane seemed like it would never get off the ground, because batteries were so heavy. but now there's better battery density. >> a prius gets about 200 passenger seat miles, so we

doubled what a prius can do, at twice the speed. >> he says airplane manufacturers are starting to see the potential now recognized by the auto industry. >> the electric car, is taking a little while to catch on, but you can see, you don't have to be a big visionary to see, it is going to happen. >> reporter: morris is up against four other nominees, including the boeing 787 dreamliner. he'll find out in the middle of march, if he wins. live at san carlos airport, ken wayne, ktvu, channel 2 news. with the clock kicking down to another deadline for the america's cup agreement, pier 29 is no longer going to be developed. people who live in the telegraph hill area were worried about their views and managed to block that part of the agreement. america's cup officials reportedly say if a deal is not in place by the end of this month, there will be no race and no development.

supporters of a ballot measure designed to replace coit tower. some people feared the parties could damage the historic murals inside the tower. richmond has become the latest city to come out against some forms of rat poison. a resolution last night to oppose the sale and purchase of rat poisons considered to pose a risk for children, pets and wildlife. it's windy out there right along the coast. a wind advisory goes into effect tomorrow morning early, and stays out throughout the day. right now, the winds are coming out throughout the west. here's a live buoy reading, gusting to 47 miles per hour. that's almost 50 mile-an-hour
