joining us now. >> reporter: you can see how it scraped along the rocks. you can tell this hit at a very high rate of speed. i want to show you video of the woman that was on board at the time it crashed. this woman was apparently on the inside of the boat. she was able to be helped to shore with someone with a rubber raft. once she was in the rubber raft the alameda fire department helped her on shore. there was a search that went on for a couple hours this morning because the coast guard was told that there was someone else in the water. that launched this search. >> some of the information we originally had there was a second person on board. another female. at first it was unclear whether the person was in the water in a small dingy or had made their way away from the scene on shore on foot. >> reporter: the search went on for a couple hours and now the

fire department says they are confident no one else in the water. the woman who was on board her story has been changing. they are saying she was clearly intoxicated when they helped her from the boat. she is not being coopive with police. at this point they don't believe anyone else was with her on the boat at the time of the crash. coming back out here live let's tell you what we learned. this boat was owned by someone in san jose. it was mored at a broker in oakland. the owner of the boat has been contacted. did not know this boat was out. presumably this boat was stolen and brought over here. it is a trek to get to where we are standing here. if it was a direct route, more than 20 minutes for this boat ride. they are telling me this is actually pretty hard to navigate through here. we don't know what this woman was doing with this boat.

there is fuel linking from the boat. the next focus is to get a boom out here to protect the environment from any kind of spill. we will continue to monitor this situation. live in alameda claudine wong. this morning about 200 firefighters in knapp pap county are working to contain a rare february wild fire. it's burning along soda canyon road in the heart of the wine country. the wild fire has grown to 60- acres since it first started yesterday afternoon. it's now about 50% contained. full containment is expected later today. the flames are still threatening homes this morning. crews are dealing with strong winds and unseasonally warm temperatures. one napa valley homeowner had been burning old vines when the fire got out of controlled. >> he tried to get it with a shovel but the wednesday were

too -- but the winds were too strong. >> did it not occur to him that today was not a good time for a fire? >> i guess not. >> it came within 100 feet of homes but crews were able to push the flames back. we'll have a live report from the fire lines in our next hour. in overnight news two people died in a freeway crash in the hayward area. that happened on northbound 880 at about 11:30 last night. the victims car stalled in the slow lane. one person got out of the car. shortly after that a driver in another car chevy avalanche slammed into the car and the person who was outside. the person outside the car died at the scene. the person in the car died later at the hospital. the driver of the chevy is cooperating with the investigation. a train hit and killed a man in palo alto last night about 10:30. that happened on cal train

southbound tracks. cal train spokeswoman says 220 passengers were on board when the collision occurred. no passengers were hurt but they were delayed until about midnight. service is expected to be back to normal this morning. crime continues to rise in oakland with seven shootings in the last day and a half. the two most recent happened within two hours of each other last night. just after 8:45 last night oakland police say a man called 911 from 14th and wood street to report being shot a couple blocks away. he was taken to highland hospital but there is no word on his condition. less than two hours later police say a man showed up at oakland childrens hospital with a wound to the back of his head. he was conscious and talking. he was shot at 56th and dover streets. police are still investigating. now people we talked to say it's easy to get a gun in oakland even for kids in elementary school. coming up in ten minutes where

the blame is being placed. 4:35. and san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi heads back to court for the official start of his trial. a judge is expected to be assigned to the case today. jury selection should begin early this week. mirkarimi is facing domestic violence charges. his lawyers hope to exclude a home video in which his wife describes a violent dispute. also this morning search teams will return to a remote area of calveras county. they are look for more victims of two serial killers. they discovered more human remains. the bodies of two young women were found earlier this month. the family of death row inmate wesley shermantine once owned this land. shermantine and herzog are blamed for 20 murders.

herzog committed suicide two months ago. petaluma schools may be the first to use drug sniffing dogs. drug related suspensions are upmostly for marijuana. now the school hopes police drug dogs will act as a deterrent. they would conduct random searches of lockers and parking lots but only when students are not present. the fairfield suisun school board scrapped a plan to eliminate elementary programs. overflow crowd had to watch from a tv monitor outside. the district expects to lose $6.5 million in state funds and it's bracing for a worst case scenario. while kindergarten will be spared teachers say they are shocked the idea was considered. >> they are learning all the things they need for first

grade and second grade. >> but the school board did vote to cut 17 items and closed a yet to be named elementary school and middle school. they will find out in november how much state funding they will receive. mean-time the district is urging parents and teachers to write to lawmakers to support funding for education. 35,000 u.s. postal service jobs are on the chopping block including some right here in the bay area. it's a result of a plan to close 200 mail processing plants across the country by june. it would save $2 billion & part of the agencies broader effort to save $20 billion over the next three years. there are three bay area plants set to be shut down. one in burlinggame with in petaluma. california republican party is holding a three-day convention here in the bay area

starting today. tomorrow republican presidential candidate newt gingrich will give a luncheon address at the convention. gingrich is the only one of the republican presidential candidates scheduled to appear at the convention. this morning the first concrete signs of work begin on a north bay transportation project. sonoma and marin county leaders will break ground on the smart train. it's expected to run from reduction board landing to clover dam. ground breaking starts at 10:30 this morning. 4:39 is the time right now. let's check in with sal for the early morning friday commute. hi sal. >> friday, pam. back to you. oh no, we have to do traffic here. unfortunately on a friday someone is not having a good friday. southbound 101 there is a crash.

still a gust pretty good here but it's clear. i'll show you some in a second. mt. diablo is ripping and roaring up there 68 miles an hour. oakland hills 27. it was really ripping on the oakland-berkeley side on the caldecott yesterday. san jose 25 miles an hour. san ramon all over the place anywhere 15-20. san jose northeast at 16. oakland airport north at six. if the wind turns southerly at santa rosa, they will be done completely. they are the coolest 47. look at redwood city. there is big differences here in the temps. if the breeze stops boom, we plunge. just depends on your location. high pressure is moving.

>> bell come -- welcome back. same sex marriage is one signature away from being legal in maryland. after the maryland state senate passed a measure legalizing same sex marriage. now all that is needed is the governors signature and he says he will sign the bill soon. however, opponents are still vowing to gather enough signatures to force a state- wide referendum this november. the sex tape featuring john east side wards and -- john edwards and one-time mistress will be settle soon. hunter sued young to get possession of the tape. john edwards still faces trial on conspiracy charges. new e-mails showing frustration from former vice presidential candidate sarah palin in her last month as alaska's governor. she resigned as governor.

now e-mails show sarah complaining about the lawsuits and suits she faced. in one e-mail she wrote quote i can't take it anymore. we have a follow up to the nine-year-old boy in washington state that brought a loaded gun to school and accidentally shot one of his classmates. that boy appeared in court yesterday wearing an orange jump suit crying as the judge read the charges against him and his father rubbed his back. students say the gun went off when the boy slammed his backpack down on his desk. a girl was hit by the bullet. he got the gun while a visit to his mothers house and told friends he was going to run away. here in the bay area people that live in oakland say young people have easy access to guns. ktvu talked to several people who say they know where they can get a gun and they have friends that own them. >> i hear stories about kids that are in elementary schools that have guns. it's like how did you get a

gun? i feel like the age range is younger and younger access to drugs and guns. >> some of the communities say they blame the people that bring the guns into neighborhoods rather than the young people who arm themselves because they are afraid. 4:47 is the time right now. despite the talk of a threat of nuclear iran top u.s. intelligence officials don't believe iran is building nuclear weapons. the report with information from 16 u.s. intelligence agencies indicates that iran is conducting research that could put it in a position to build a nuclear weapon. that it is not actively pursuing that option. iran has continually insisted its nuclear program is for peaceful energy purposes only. al qaeda -- deadly wave of coordinated attacks across iraq. bombs went off in 12 cities yesterday killing 55 people an injuring more than 200 others. the attacks targeted security

forces. al qaeda says they are in revenge for the alleged torture of sunnies in iraqi prisons. the military is set to release the names of the -- the two helicopters collided during a training exercise. six of the victims were based out of camp pendleton. this is the third deadly helicopter training crash involving camp pendleton troops in six months. a woman is recooperating after being dragged by one of munis metro trains. the woman was trapped under one of the trains for 15 minutes. it happened while she was walking her dog in the sunset district and tried to get around the train by stepping over the connector between the cars. that's when the train started to move and trapped her. one man said she didn't she would survive. >> she was down already but i

was happy to see her when i told her what happened. >> now muni crews were able to jack up the train, get the victim out and take her to the hospital. paramedics said she only had scratches on her legs and arm. witnesses say the dog was not hurt. we are learning more about the pileup that killed three people including a woman from pleasanton. that crash happened wednesday night along highway 101. the victims just left a funeral when an suv crossed the center divide and hit their car. 53-year-old maria of pleasanton and two others were killed. as many as nine other vehicles got tangled up in the crashes. highway patrol arrested the driver of the suv on suspicion of drunk driving. four women are behinded bars for firing at a mall.

police were called to the sunvalley mall. store security caught the women shoplifting but they fought back. no one was hurt by the gunfire. the two women ran away. two others got in a vehicle. they were all caught and arrested. now 4:50. it is a state requirement but the one thing some children are not getting enough of when they go to school. international crime ring busted. the rare items smuggled into the country that got the attention of federal agents.

were captured. four of the suspects are from the los angeles area. they also seized $2 million in cash and gold bars and diamonds and watches. there has an unusually high number of norovirus outbreaks throughout contra costa caths. nearly 307 schools reported cases over the past two months. earlier this month 212 students were sick in the knightson school district. school officials were forced to cancel several basketball games and postpone a dance. laurel in oakly also dealt with an outbreak. a new study shows students are not receiving enough physical education. elementary schools are supposed to get 100 minutes of physical education a week. most schools fall short.

san jose gusts to 25. synura motion scene fremont around hayward clayton numerous locations i've seen 18-20. turning a little more westerly santa rosa down to 44. 64 san jose. you don't usually see that. one has more of a westerly breeze, the other one has an on shore breeze or easterly breeze. 57 livermore. 55 san francisco. once the wind collapses by that i mean turns more southerly or westerly these will take a tumble. i know it's way up there. as it starts to inch closer our easterly breeze will turn more westerly. that will send temperatures down. it will be sunny and warm today for awhile. i think by this afternoon you'll notice the pattern is starting to change. that cooling trend will take us more noticeable into saturday. today though okay. sunny and warm. i think it will be a little
