there you are. it's friday, february 24th i'm pam cook >> and i'm dave clark. let's check your weather and traffic. steve is here. things are changing. >> still nice dave and pam. it won't be as warm as wednesday and thursday. it's sunny but wind has started to collapse at the surface. it's still offshore in some of the higher elevations. i expect this to change later today. sunny and nice but more 60s and low 70s. here is sal. steve, good morning. at the toll plaza here we can see traffic is looking good. it is getting a little bit more crowded there are no major problems come into the city. this is what was left of a car involved in an overnight crash on northbound 880 in the hayward area last night overnight and in the morning. two people were killed. chp says the victims car stalled in the slow lane and one person got out of the car shortly after that a driver in a chevy avalanche slammed into the car and the person that was outside.

the person outside the car died at the scene. the person inside the car died later at the hospital. the driver of the chevy avalanche is cooperating with the investigation. 6:01 let's go back to dave and pam. we have continuing coverage of that big wild fire in the wine country. hundreds of firefighters from napa county are still out there. trying to contain a rare february wild fire. this is burning near the silverado trail. allie rasmus is there as well to tell us when firefighters hope to contain it. >> reporter: firefighters appear to be getting the upper hand on this fire. the soda fire is more than 50% contained. fire crews have been working on it all night. it has burned more than 40 acres but it has not destroyed any homes. let's show you the video from news chopper 2. you can see the

flames fanned out across the hillside. it is very rugged, uneven terrain and there are a lot of vineyards in this area. cal fire crews got the call about the fire at 12:30 yesterday afternoon. they have been working on it since then. it catch firefighters in this area by surprise. this is not typical to see a fire like this in february. it stall started with a small debris fire. they have been burning old vines and roots. not only was it unusually warm yesterday, it was also windy. there were wind gusts up to 20 miles an hour. the embers from that small debris fire flew off in the brush. >> this type of weather this time of year it makes you think and wonder what is going to happen later on in the season. >> reporter: now the wind has died down quite a bit so that is helping firefighters. cal fire says usually this time of year they don't need to

issue any sort of permit for controlled burns. usually it's a lot cooler and a lot more wet than it is now. they are concerned this could be a sign of things to come. live in napa county ktvu.com. woman is in custody after the -- that happened before 2:00 this morning. the 40-foot long pleasure ended up on some rocks. authorities tell us here that the boat made an impact at a high rate of speed. officers took one woman into custody after that crash. they say she was intoxicated. rescue crews responded to look for anyone else that may have been on board that boat. >> it's difficult to do a search in the dark. the water is dark in color. we have done the best we can in the immediate area. >> reporter: now the crash

caused a fuel spill. authorities are now working to lane up that mess that was left behind. 6:04 train service is expected to be back to -- this happened about 10:30 last night on cal train southbound tracks. a spokesperson says 220 passengers were on board when when that collision happened. san francisco sheriff ktvu tara moriarty is live with what is expected to happen in art tea. >> reporter: in three hours the trial is set to begin today. what we will see is a judge assigned to the trial. no word yet on if ross mirkarimi will be attenning the proceeding. stemming from a reported argument between him and his wife on new years eve.

two days ago his attorney filed documents asking the judge to exclude statements made by mirkarimi's neighbor. she met with mirkarimi's wife the day after the alleged abuse. madison called police after video taping lopez talking and crying about the incident and her fears her husband would try to take their son away from her. the tape was made for a dusky bottle not a criminal case. and legal experiments say that could play into whether the judge dismesses that as evidence. the sheriff i should -- the sheriff indicate there is are no plea deals in the case. live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty. 6:06. u.s. postal service moving ahead. what planned budget cuts at 260 mail processing centers all over the country. including right here in the bay

area. 35,000 postal service jobs are targeted. this is all part of a $1 billion cost cutting effort. coming up how mail deliver will be effected by the cuts. if you buy gasoline you know prices have jumped in the past week. it may be more than i thought. the average for all of california now $4.20. san francisco still has some of the highest gasoline prices in california. gallon of regular averages $427 a gallon. san jose in oakland pretty close to the state average while vallejo and napa have lower than average gas prices. some industry experts predict we'll be paying as much as $5 a gallon before summer starts. >> that is crazy. that will hurt a lot of businesses. if you have to drive, you have to drive. so you will cut back in other

places. >> that is right. and also people realize that if you're stuck in traffic you're not getting good gas mileage. that adjust commute times for people. good morning, everybody. you know what this morning bart is on time in case you are wondering about that. ace train number one and three are moving along the system on time. let's take a look at a new crash reported. this one is on 880 south right at highway 237. a brand new crash reported there. watch for energy vehicles to be arriving at the scene. so far 237 itself looks pretty good. there are no major problems on that highway. 880 north and southbound the traffic is moving well here. northbound 880 looks good. 101 san francisco northbound 101 looks good. if you're driving to catch a flight, not only is the freeway look good getting there, there

80 in santa rosa to 63. these temperatures continue to go down as we head into next week. 43 now santa rosa and napa. 40s to the north. san jose went from 64-55 in one hour. so things are changing rapidly. i know it's not much of a system, but it's the wind direction. you lose that easterly breeze or northeast and turn it more easterly and southerly. sunshine today. sunny and nice. breezy at times. i think that starts to really fall apart here. 60s for some or low 70s for others. warmest temp will be to the south. cooling continues into the week. a late february storm is

through hollywood and other parts of los angeles. police say they were forced to shoot and kill the man after he threatened them with his gun. a nine-year-old boy in washington state who took a loaded gun to school and accidentally shot one of his classmates. now faces criminal charges. little boy appeared in court yesterday. wearing an orange jump suit. as the judge read the charges against him and his father you see him there rubbing his back wiping his tears. the gun went off when the boy slammed his backpack down on his desk. eight-year-old girl was hit by the bullet. she is still in the hospital. according to court documents the boy got the gun during a visit to his mothers home and told friends he was going to run away. hundreds of local jobs could be lost if mayor mail service. alison burns is in our washington, d.c. newsroom with the postal service plan and what it means to you.

before midnight. u.s. geological survey says people near daly city, san francisco, and san bruno recall feeling the quake. we are getting information from the fends of syria -- friends of syria conference. u.s., european, and arab foreign ministers from 70 countries are meeting today. the group is also expected to demand that syrian president assad agree to an immediate cease fire and allow humanitarian release into the area. mendocino county could get help to cover the cost for the 36 day man hunt. the man hunt for aaron ended in october when a swat team shot and killed the man. authorities say he shot and killed two men earlier in the

august. now the press democrat reports that assemblyman wesley has introduced legislation calling on the state to pay more than $40,000 to mendocino county for costs related to that man hunt. according to tmz butler into the betty ford center because he became to reliant on pain medication. the problem started in 2006 when he suffered severe pain shooting the movie 300. the problems became worse in december remember when he was badly hurt in a surfing accident in half-moon bay. it happened while filming the movie about the maverick surf competition. a palo alto lawmaker will introduce to expand the redistribution of unused prescription drugs. supporters say it will help californias uninsured

good morning, bay bridge getting busy. in the last few minutes we've seen slow traffic popping up. metering lights came on. so far not a huge delay. 6:24. a womans lucky to be alive this morning after a muni train dragged her down the tracks in san francisco. as she was pulled under the muni train which started moving just as she was walking between two of its cars. emergency workers were called in. a big crowd fathered -- crowd gathered. >> it took about 15-20 minutes to lift the train to remove her. as she slid up a roar went from both sides. >> they were able to get her out and see they needed to get her to the hospital. paramedics say her injuries were surprisingly minor.

just scratches on her arms and legs. pedestrians and cyclists in petaluma be careful when following safety rules today. police will be watching more closely than usual. they are hoping that will lead to fewer collision between bikers and walkers and drivers. petaluma ranks in the bottom three in the u.s. for the safety of cyclist under the age of 15. it's also listed as the worst in accidents for pedestrians. other deep cuts were approved. parents, teachers, and students packed last nights meeting. overflow crowd had to watch from a television monitor. the district expects to lose $6.5 million in state funds. and says its bracing for a worst case scenario. while kindergarten will be spared, the school board did vote to cut 17 items and close a yet to be named elementary school and middle school. they will find out in november how much state funding they

will receive. 6:26. a registered sex offender is facing sexual battery charges after an incident in alameda county earlier this week. ronald epps groped a woman in a at a bookstore but the victim is yet to come forward. he is listed in the state sex offender data base. right now epps is locked up in the jail in an unrelated case. 6:27. gun violence in oakland continuing to spike with two more shootings overnight. why some of the communities say more young people are arming themselves. and a 40-foot boat crashes into the alameda shoreline early this morning. we'll have the latest on what happened, the investigation and what authorities did to contain the leaking fuel. the opening bell is about to ring in new york. we'll take you live there.

police custody. that is after a boat crash on the alameda shoreline. it happened just before 2:00 a.m.. that is where we find ktvu channel 2 claudine wong with bad news. >> reporter: it is a problem out here. they have alerted all the proper authorities within the last half hour the oakland fire department was able to put a boom around this boat. it goes all the way around. trying to contain fuel that is leaking from this boat. that boat crashed into the shoreline here at the marina. there are several different operations ongoing right now. this one obviously is supposed to contain the fuel. later they will focus on salvaging that boat. then there is this investigation into how the boat got here. police are trying to figure out the identity of the woman they rescued. take a look at this woman. when rescue crews got to the scene she was still on board.

someone from a nearby marina helped her get to the boat both. police said she was intoxicated and uncooperative. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: authorities say her story keeps changing. she went give them her name. didn't have any id on her. they are hoping fingerprints tell her who she is. she did say she wasn't alone on the boat. so they searched for a couple hours. >> it's difficult to do a search in the dark. the water is dark in color other than any light we were able to provide from shore. >> reporter: pretty confident there is no one in the water? >> at this point, yes we feel pretty confident with that. and the individual that pd is taking away which was the woman on board, they are continuing to get that interview. her story is changing at times.

>> reporter: back live out here. we can see the damage to the under side of the boat. that gives them a pretty indication she was going pretty fast. as far as the boat it belonged to someone out of san jose. it was being marred in oakland because of a possibility of a sale. still a lot of questions out here this morning. live here in alameda claudine wong. about 200 firefighters in napa county are working to contain that rare february wild fire. it is burning along soda canyon road. flames have come dangerously close to some homes. fire crews are getting the upper hand on that fire. 6:33. more crime reports in oakland with at least seven shootings in the last day and a half. the two most recent happened last night within two hours of each other. just after 8:45 last night, oakland police say a man called

911 from 14th and wood streets. reported being shot a couple of blocks away. he was rushed to highland hospital. we don't have any word on his condition. less than two hours later. a man showed up at oakland children's hospital with a gunshot wound in the back of the head. police say he was conscious and he was talking. the man told police he was shot at 56 and dover streets and an investigation continues. ktvu talked with some young people yesterday who said other young people are arming themselves to protect themselves. >> i hear stories about kids that are in elementary schools that have guns. i'm like how did you get a gun? i feel like the age range is younger and younger access to drugs and guns. >> they say they blame the people that bring the guns into the neighborhood rather than the young people that buy guns for protection. back to court for san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi. his trial on domestic violence

charges began today. tara moriarty is in san francisco with what will happen in court. >> reporter: ross mirkarimi indicated there are no plea deals in the works just yet. he said he's looking forward to letting the process play itself out. and also says he is really looking forward to getting this all behind him. in less than three hours the trial will get under way and the judge is expected to be assigned. on wednesday he and his attorneys appeared in court to file papers. they asked the future judge to exclude statements made by mirkarimi's neighbor madison. madison called police after video taping lopez talking and crying about the incident pointing to a bruise on her arm where she said her husband grabbed her. she was afraid she would take the couples son theo away from her. this tape was made for a

custody battle not a criminal case. the tape was made several hours after the abuse was real. ropes say the allegations intense her -- to testify she suffers from battered womans center. we'll tell you who else is on the prosecutions list and if lopez herself will take the stand. live from san francisco i'm tara moriarty. 6:36. this morning search teams go back to a remote part of calveras county. they are look for evidence of more victims of two serial killers. they discovered more human remains. the bodies of two young women were found in this same area earlier this month. the family of death row inmate shermantine once owned the

property. shermantine and her shog is -- her sog is responsible for 20 murders. in petaluma school there is may be the next one to use drug sniffing dogs. drug related suspensions are up. mostly for marijuana. the school is hoping police drug dogs like this one will act as a deterrent. the drug dogs will conduct random searches of lockers and parking lots but only when the students are not present. the school board wants the community to weigh in on this. california republicans are gathering here in the bay area starting today for a three-day convention. tomorrow newt gingrich will give a luncheon address at the convention. he is the only one of the republican presidential candidates to appear at the convention. we want to remind you starting tonight the most heavily used rail line on muni will be shut

down for six straight weeks. yous will be working on a rail -- the line is expected to be baa in service before the monday morning commute. the next six weeks. sal is back. how are the folks at the toll plaza doing? >> it's getting crowded. after tuesday i think any day after that will be better. it's crowded but not as bad. this is really a walk in the park compared to what we have had the last few days. this mornings commute is looking good on the san mateo and on the dumbarton bridge heading across the bay to the peninsula. this morning we've had that crash on 880 southbound at -- the crash is not causing a big

livermore with 77. by tomorrow these will be the forecasted highs. 63, 58, 64, 65 and on monday we may see only upper 50s as a cold air mass moves into the north and east of us. 43 napa and santa rosa. 55 san jose. temperatures are coming down north to south because that wind is turning. high pressure system moving but it will still give us a nice day. just upper 60s and lower 70s. by tomorrow low clouds back to the coast. temperatures will continue to drop. sunny and nice. still windy higher elevations. i think late morning that turns and starts to decrease. 60s and 70s now. cooler by the coast. there will be mid 70s toward southern santa clara valley. temperatures are starting to take a drop. they will continue that theme into saturday and sunday. we may talk about rain moving in. what? yeah rain moving in. >> we could use a little rain.

good morning, to you. here's a quick look at some of the top stories. cleanup efforts under way in alameda for this a boat that crashed. there it is. this happened just before 2:00 a.m.. police say one woman was on board. she is now in custody. authorities searched the boat and water for other possible passengers but no one else was found. oakland police investigating at least seven shootings in the past day and a half. that includes two shootings within two hours just last night. none of the seven shootings were fatal. and domestic violence trial against san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi is expected to start today. mirkarimi is facing domestic violence charges that stems from a new years eve incident with his wife. we have continuing coverage of that big wild fire that is

burning in the wine country. 200 firefighters in napa county are still working to contain that rare february wild fire. it is burning along soda canyon road just above the silverado trail. allie rasmus joins us now to tell us when they plan to contain this fire. >> reporter: now that it's light out we can give you a better view of what the area looks like and what firefighters are up against. this area this wild fire the soda fire is north of napa. this is napa county where there is a lot of hilly rugged terrain. it's mostly dirt paths up in this hilly area. as you can see it is windy and breezy again this morning. you can see the wind moving the pushes over there. we have felt it since we have driven over here. let's show you what the soda fire looked like last night. this is a view from news chopper 2. there were flames fanned out across the hillside. this is more than 50% contained

at this point. it has burned between 40-60 acres. no homes have been damaged. there are about 200 firefighters tackling this fire. there is supposed to be a briefing around 7:00 this morning where the day crew of firefighters is going to get an update of what they are up against. it caught firefighters and residence by surprise when it first broke out yesterday. it's not typical to have wild fires in february. it started with a small debris fire. someone had been burning old vines and roots which is typical in this area. and it was unusually warm and also windy and that is how the fire spread. >> we tried to get it with a shovel but the winds were too strong and it fanned it from there. now again wind could be a factor that firefighters have to deal with again today. cal fire says this time of year they don't have to issue permits for controlled burns or

is a cig alert? >> all lanes of interstate i-80 eastbound are stopped now because a pedestrian was reportedly hit. this is eastbound on 580. this will be a huge traffic problem for the commute. that is the noncommute direction however. the west side of the freeway will likely have slow downs as the emergency vehicles come in. some people do slow down to look and that whole thing. eastbound 580. basically they are stopping the traffic from the 680 interchange. now we are getting word this is a fatal crash. turn this down here. i just got word from chp this is a fatal crash. all lanes are currently stopped. chp and emergency vehicles on the scene. westbound traffic is slowing down from livermore. this is one of the problems that will be there for the rest of the morning commute. rather unfortunately. we'll be on it, of course. let's go out and take a look at

live look at the big board. dow jones up 10 points. retailers are not doing well after disappointing earnings including from gap this morning. look at this riot police orlando, florida last night at a mall because of a new sneaker went on sale. 1,000 people waiting for a limited edition nike to go on sale. because of the big crowd foot locker canceled the sale. that's when the crowd became angry and police were called in to try to restore order. we're told no one was hurt. there may have been some arrests but not many. four women were arrested accused of shoplifting and firing a gun inside of a mall. concord police were called to the parking lot outside the jc penny store at sun valley mall. they say store security caught the women shoplifting and tried to detain them but the women
