12:00 pm
your next dinner. pillsbury grands! dinner ideas made easy. complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. >> watching the winds and battling the flames of a rare winter wildfire in the north bay. that story in a moment. good afternoon, i am tori campbell. we begin though with developing news out of the san francisco airport. in just the past hour the federal security agents spotted a suspicious package going through an x-ray machine in the screening lines. a bomb squad has been called in
12:01 pm
to examine the package and one passenger has been detained. all passengers at delta's boarding area c in that terminal have been stopped at security. sfo officials say some flights have been affected. we don't have any information on what flights have been affected but again there has been a suspicious package in delta's terminal c and we will bring you more details as they become available. turning now to our other top story, in napa county firefighters are still on the scene of a wildfire there. it is burning along soda canyon road above the silverado trail in the heart of the wine country. ktvu has been covering the fire since it started yesterday afternoon and allie rasmus joins us now from where the fire started to let us know the situation now. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. yeah, this fire started on this hill top where we are standing 24 hours ago. the owner of this land hired a
12:02 pm
vineyard maintenance company to clear away the vines on his vineyard. they burned some of that debris in the corner of this field, then strong winds carried the embers into the canyon and the fire right now is still only 58% contained and it has burned 200 acres. they have lived in this home for more than 25 years and yesterday was the closest they have come to losing to it a wildfire. >> we were worried but i was glad my brother was home. >> reporter: their house was one of three threatened. his brother got out and started working to prevent it. >> we did that and it helped a long way, pretty much where we had the line is where the fire stopped. >> reporter: this morning instead of chirping birds you could hear the buzz of chainsaws, fire crews worked to clear away brush, hot spots continued to smolder near the
12:03 pm
homes. as of this morning though firefighters said these homes were out of danger but helicopters continued to dump water around them anyway. wind gusts yesterday helped this fire spread to more than 200 acres and firefighters warped there may be more wind on the way. >> i don't belief it will be as intense as yesterday but they still are predicting the north- northwest winds. >> reporter: homeowners who experienced a close call yesterday want some answers. >> knowing a thing or 2 about fire i would say that yesterday was not the best day to have a burn day and we will see if they have the correct permits or not. >> cal fire inspectors say they are checking to see if that maintenance company did have the proper permits. if not they could face a citation or could be asked to pay for some of the costs of fighting this fire. for more on the weather conditions here and across the bay let's go to rosemary orosco in the weather center. >> all right, as you know record warmth out there, very dry conditions, our rainfall below normal. those gusty dry winds helping to fuel this fire.
12:04 pm
atypical for this type of year. i want to slide in close to what is going on there. out near the canyon southwesterly winds coming in at about eight miles per hour, that is actually a bit of an improvement. the last couple of days we have seen the offshore winds, more of a dry wind. so the southwesterly wind coming from the pacific means a sea breeze. that is going to mean higher humidity levels. now in and around the canyon itself it looks like at the ridge tops the winds are 10 to 15 miles per hour, of course, the firefighters would prefer no wind at all but a southwesterly and northwesterly wind better than the offshore winds. in the canyon another warm day, temperatures 75 degrees. checked in around the napa area, humid levels are up from 24 hours ago, so hopefully that may be a little bit of a benefit to the firefighters. >> people in the midwest would love to have the bay area's weather. a winter weather advisory was in effect in chicago until a
12:05 pm
couple of hours ago because of this, thick heavy snow. travelers on the roads and in the air having problems. more than 150 flights have been cancelled at chicago's o'hare airport alone. that includes flights to and from the bay area. this video from this morning shows the flight board at sfo and cancelled flights from the chicago area. sfo officials say 4 arrivals were cancelled this morning. they tell us things look normal for this afternoon but it is always recommended to check with your airline before heading to the airport. the domestic abuse trial for san francisco sheriff gets underway today. he is facing three misdemeanor charges for an alleged domestic violence incident with his wife on new year's eve. tara moriarty joins us live now to explain what is happening in court. >> reporter: well, at 9:00 this morning a local judge, judge garrett, was appointed, assigned to this trial.
12:06 pm
and at 1:30 every everyone will reconvene to set up a schedule for pretrial motions. we caught up with him as entered the courtroom amid a crush of reporters and attorneys, when asked if the trial was a distraction, here is what he had to say? >> that is the deshearting part is maintaining professionalism and everything goes to that. >> he faces three misdemeanor charges stemming from an alleged domestic incident with his wife on new year's eve. one of his biggest supporters was at this morning's proceedings. >> i am here to support the sheriff. i think there is a lot more to this case than has come out and we are going to start finding out what the real truth is with this trial. >> now wednesday his lawyers pushed to have a video ruled inadmissionible, on the tape she is pointing to a bruce on her arm and crying and talking
12:07 pm
about her fears her husband will take away their son. the sheriff's lawyer that she had her neighbor take that to be used in a child custody battle, not a criminal case, she said she would testify but has reportedly recanted that now. now today the court may look ahead to figure out when perspective jurors will receive questionnaires. we are told by a legal amist this jury pool could be large, as many as 180 people given the high profile nature of this case, coming up tonight at 5:00 we will have much more on what happened. live from san francisco, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. a spokesman for the san joaquin county sheriff's department told ktvu news that investigators are back into the county as part of their investigation into the so- called speed freak murders but refused to characterize what they were doing there.

12:09 pm
shot at 56th and dover streets. police are still investigating. children are exposed to this at a young age and some say it is a way of life and that means their educators have unique challenges. we will hear from some of them later in the newscast. the first actual construction work on the north bay's smart train is getting underway today. a ground braking for the first phase of the tracks was held at 10:30 this morning at the petalooma depo. that section will run between san rafael and santa ross. that is the green line. the smart train may connect to cloverdale and larkspur if a second phase is funded. starting tonight one of the most heavily used rail lines on muni will by shut down for six straight weeks, six straight

[giggling] you might recall the man who tied up the morning commute on muni metro last month when he drove his car into the tunnel. yesterday 40-year-old scott mitchell of se bas sebastopol pleaded no contest, prosecutors say his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limb. under a plea agreement he will receive three years probation, 9 months of dui classes, tin days of community service and various fees and fines. two people died in a crash on northbound 880 just north of
12:14 pm
hayward overnight. it happened near the exit in san lorenzo about 11:30 p.m. all that is left of the car is a mangled mess. the chp says the victim's car stalled in the slow lane, one person got out of the car while another person stayed in the car, shortly after that a chevy suv slammed into the car, the person outside the car died at the scene, the person inside the car died later at the hospital. the driver of the suv is cooperating with investigators. a man was struck and killed as he tried to cross eastbound interstate 580 on foot in pleasanton. the crash blocked all lanes. three of the lanes opened 45 minutes later, the other were closed for two and 1/2 hours, backing up traffic to castro valley. investigators have not released the man's identity and have not said why he was trying to cross

12:16 pm
somebody had prior knowledge, must have taken a long time to find those ignition keys. >> the boat's lifting agent says neither he nor the owner recognize the woman rescued from the boat after the crash. >> it would really surprise me for one drunken lead to move that boat out from jack london square and get it this far. >> she was unhurt but uncooperative and intoxicated. >> what she did tell authorities was that she wasn't alone. but after two hours of searching firefighters seemed convinced there was no one in need of rescue. >> you are confident there is no one in the water. >> at this point yes, we feel confident of that. >> this morning the coast guard continued to keep an eye on the water for any signs of that second person or environmental fallout. >> remove fuel, batteries, oil, anything g that can cause damage to the environment. >> the coast guard says once the hazards are secured it is
12:17 pm
