saw a bomb inside someone's carry-on bag. paul chambers shows us what the device actually turned out to be. >> frank, things are pretty much back to normal here. all this area here was completely shut down for two hours as bomb squad and police checked a suspicious package at terminal 1. they later found out it was an oxygen tank. >> it was 11:17 this morning. security check point c where a tsa screener saw a mysterious device. moments later, police were called in. >> for caution and safety we literally evacuated the entire terminal. >> reporter: leaving hundreds of passengers stranded as police checked the area, making it secure. a little more than two hours later, the airport was clear. it was an elderly woman who caused it.

>> she couldn't answer the screener's questions about what was in the bag because she said she wasn't the one who packed it. >> i am happy they took care of that. yes. i just hope that we get to go home though today. >> we've been waiting and trying to follow everybody's directions and nothing but chaos. >> reporter: 10 flights were affected. 1200 passengers were stuck with no place to go. some say they blame delta. >> the airline completely dropped the ball. they told all the passengers that none of the planes were taking off. >> reporter: in fact, that man's original flight did leave without him and his wife and many others. they were booked at a later flight that leaves at 10:00 tonight. i got off the phone with a spokesman and they said they did not talk about security breaches but they do the best to take care of their passengers. >> more details now. a check of our ar

chives shows the last time a security cause shut down was back in 2003 when a woman 32 pushed through security and made it all the way to baltimore before being detained. we asked deputy director mike mccarron how often this happens and he estimates once every four to five years. >> the fire is still not fully contained. the number of acres burned has gone up substantially. >> reporter: about 2 p.m., one helicopter on patrol spotted this flair-up. crews today struggling to put out a stubborn fire. >> it's rough. the terrain is difficult actual is -- access and the fire is laid down. >> reporter: 200 acres have burned.

down this afternoon while looking for two gunman. someone shot at people near holly street. a short time later, officers arrested a man they believe was one of the gunman. the other man got away. coming up at 6:00, rita williams will tell us what a woman did today that may very well have saved the life of her daughter. in oakland, police are investigating 7 other shootings over the past two days. two of them happened within two hours of each other. a man called 911 just after 8:45 last night from 14th and wood streets. he said he was shot about two blocks away. less than two hours later, a man showed up to the hospital with a gunshot wound. that man told officers someone shot him at 56 and dover streets. >> jerry brown served his top lobbyist. he's in washington to

get help cutting the state budget. today he took his request to the white house and president obama. >> the president is all fired up, extremely knowledgeable. very impressed with the way he understands this government from top to bottom. >> governor brown joined a group of democratic governors at the white house for a closed door session with the president. the governor is asking officials to let him trim state spending on medi-cal and education. >> as governor of california my goal was to get greater flexibility so we can cut the medi-cal program where we need to, and secondly, working out some of the restrictions of the no child left behind. >> along with his white house session, brown is having lunch with the chinese ambassador to the west. are voters happy with

governor brown's performance? coming up in a few moments, the results of a new poll. >> a march was in oakland today to draw attention to what they call income inequity. calling themselves the 99%, they say they've made financial sacrifices but the 1 % have made more money. >> to uncheck policies and politics, the 1% has really gotten ahead and it's time for middle class families to get ahead as well. >> later this year they'll negotiate labor contract at companies where they claim the offices of the 1%. gas prices shot up once again overnight. the national average for unleaded regular gas is now $3.65 a gallon, the highest ever for this time of year. investors say they're concerned the conflict over iran's nuclear program could shut off. one-fifth of the crude oil passes through that

area every day. gas costs much higher than the national average, up 25 cents from just a week ago. in san francisco, the average is $4.26 and in san jose, $4.21. >> mixed numbers today on wall street. surged to 1400 mark early in the day. 13,000 that is after better than expected consumer spending and home sales. the dow closed down 2 points to 12983. nasdaq picked up 7 points. wounded and sick women and children began evacuateing to the city of homes today. that pressure included a meeting today with secretary of state hillary clinton and 70 other diplomats. she called china and

ares here. he joined the task force during a child pornography sweep in marin county. kutcher is the head of a foundation that hopes to end child sex trafficking. >> it's not often a suspected case of drunk driving results in a boat crash, but that's exactly what happened in this accident where a boat crashed in to some rocks. it all happened off the shores of alameda. these are pictures of the boat not long after it crashed on the rocks. john sasaki is there now with how the boat ended up there. john? >> we now know the name of the women arrested here this morning. just two hours ago, a huge train lifted the boat out of the water, a significant step

in this bizarre case. it was delicate work, pulling a boat out of the water and putting it on a flatbed right side up, all while spilling no fuel. it started here last night at 9:30. >> late at night, nobody goes cruising out on the bay that late. >> reporter: this man was nearby when the boat left the dock. >> they slowed down a bit and puttered out. >> reporter: around 1:45 a.m. it crashed on the rocks in alameda. tanesha thompson was arrested. police say she was drunk at the time. the boat was for sale for $100,000. the agent said this incident surprises him because the keys were hidden and the boat was not easy to maneuver. >> somebody certainly had a certain amount of skill to get the boat out this far. >> reporter: alameda police say as yet they don't have enough

evidence to charge thompson from driving under the influence or grand theft because nobody saw her operating the boat and she said someone else was driving it. john sasaki, ktvu news. >> we have new video just in to the news room in the past 15 minutes. there was a horrific crash this afternoon near the russian river. we're going to show you that videotape in just a couple minutes when we get it cued up. in the meantime, in two hours from now, one of san francisco's most heavily used lines is going to shut down for six straight weekends. crews will work on a church and rail replacement program. the line will be replaced by shuttle buses by ocean beach and church street. it should be back in service before the monday morning commute. some streets will be closed during the weekend construction. officials

with the smart train project broke ground on the system today. it will run between santa rosa, the green line you see on the map. plans call for the smart train to eventually run all the way to cloverdale if funding is secured for a second phase. >> a woman filed a los against the university of california region because of her son's overdose. she says the university knew about drug use at the campus owned cooperative where her son lived. bennett gibson was a student at the school when he died. the regent did not respond after a request about the lawsuit. >> there's a horrible crash this afternoon, happened in sonoma county near the russian river. the highway patrol says a 61-year-old woman was killed

when a car drove right off the road. the car ended up in a creek. rescue crews had to pull the driver out of the wreckage. three people were hurt and taken to area hospitals. no word on whether the driver will face any charges or on the conditions of those who were injured. a nasty snowstorm caused major problems today in chicago. a wind whipped mix of snow and ice made getting around the city almost impossible. the storm blew through overnight leaving a new layer of heavy snow making it hard to get around the city especially in a car, and impossible at times to fly out of the airports. hundreds of flights were canceled at o'hara. you can see on the board here, cancellations and delays from the chicago area. sfo tells us four flights from chicago to san francisco were canceled this morning and there were a number of delays. things in chicago cleared up as the day went on, but as always, if you are flying

out of sfo or picking someone up, check in with your airline for possible delays. >> when it comes to the bay area weather, another nice day but not the really warm weather we saw for the past couple days. >> it's been a lot of the same for the last month or so. very dry and warm. two days in a row of record heat. no records today but still above average temperatures. they cooled off a couple of degrees. a little less wind and northeasterly wind. that calmed things down. temperatures trending down in to the weekend. we go outside, we got wind right along the coast, even a little bit of patchy fog showing up out toward the golden gate bridge. gusts are up to 31. that's pretty windy up along the coast. the winds will continue most of the night and then they're going to keep coming on shore through the weekend. and as they do, temperatures cool. what we've been dealing with are the winds going this way, north northeast

and that warms us up. the new winds are coming this way and that cools us down. it's really that simple. when you look at a flag or something in your neighborhood, if it's blowing out of the west toward the east, that's a cooler wind in our environment. so these are the highs from today. not much off yesterday's highs. very, very warm. this bay area weekend is going to be really, really nice. it's not going to be as warm as yesterday or even today but it's going to be cool. the mechanism for cooling comes right here. wind shift direction. that's a weak frontal system. the winds start going like this. you see the clouds streaming in. prior to this, the winds were going this way. here comes cold air. it's all north of us . the weather and snow and rain. it will get close enough to us that it will bump our temperatures down. you'll notice it first tomorrow morning. saturday morning. i know you got a lot of stuff going on saturday morning if you've got kids.

donation is no laughing matter. following in the footsteps of steven colbert, bill mahr made a million dollar pledge to priorities usa action. it turns out more than half of the $60 million donated to groups supporting the president and gop presidential rivals has come in million dollar plus donations. >> a new poll shows californians are not pleased in the way the state is heading but they are still pleased with governor jerry brown. it has eroded steadily in the past five months. in september, 49% said they approved. the gap has now narrowed with 45% approving of the governor's work and 38% disapproving. californians are much more definite in their

opinions on california overall. 62% believe the state is on the wrong track. 32% say california is heading in the right direction. 6% had no opinion. california voters seem to have a love/hate relationship with the state legislature. >> new research is suggesting people are becoming a little less friendly on social networking sites. a survey released today said more people are taking advantage of the privacy setting and trimming their friends lists. the report comes a day after the white house called for stronger privacy protections for social network users. a new less invasive prenatal test that stanford doctors created is expected to be available next work. the blood text can detect major problems with the fetus as early as 10 weeks with the problem and

of all the dry weather we've had so far this winter. in napa the unusual conditions helped cause the fire firefighters are trying to put out tonight. it's burnt 200 acres and only 50% contained. flames threatened three homes at one point but we're told the homes are now safe. again here, that kind of wind-whipped fire in february is extremely rare and our consumer editor, tom, went to the field and told us what kind of reaction cal fire is taking. >> reporter: have a look over here. this california has the largest public firefighting air force in the country, and bigger than other nations'. here at mcclellan field, maintenance crews are working all winter to get it ready for fire season.

they're deployed when fire season begins. >> in southern california, first week of may, northern california, first week of june. >> reporter: this year is anything but normal. >> the amount of precipitation we've seen this winter is the lowest in the last hundred years. we're looking to move aircraft to southern air bases in the next couple weeks. >> reporter: although most won't be deployed till a couple of months, the fact is, in a serious emergency, most are ready to go. >> we have the ability to actually bring our pilots back on and staff these aircraft even today. >> reporter: cal fire owns 23 air tankers, 14 spotter planes. the largest government-owned firefighting air force in the nation. it can also call contractor aircraft if needed. during the entire year, most of the helicopters are on duty. >> the helicopters were able to swap them out throughout the

san francisco women who were married before the ban. one spouse is a federal worker and said the u.s. defense marriage act blocked her spouse from getting medical coverage. a judge ruled the law was unconstitutional. today lawyers for house speaker, john boehner, and other speakers, appealed the decision. opponents have taken the first steps toward a ballot referendum against it. this is video of the maryland house passing their measure last week. the state senate okayed it yesterday. today opponents filed draft language for ballot measure and if it is okay, will begin collecting the signatures to put the issue before voters. should it stay or go? the decision has been made about this old coca cola sign that some claim is inspiring children at a nearby school to drink

7 marines were killed in a midair collision. they were there on a training mission. one was 33-year-old sergeant jeffrey avery everett of fresno. his mother says her husband believes hedied following his passion. >> she said i'm really sad. i hurt. but i can't be mad, i can't be angry about it because he was doing what he loved to do. and it was. he loved to fly. >> everett's mother says he left a job as a youth pastor in fresno to join the marines after the september 11th terrorist attacks. it could take weeks to determine the cause of the crash. >> a push to get iraq to buy more american rice. 12 representatives from states sent

a letter to the iraqi government asking it to resume buying american rice. they have been buying cheaper gas from india. >> a palo alto lawmaker introduces a bill to expand distribution of unused prescription drugs. state senator is sponsoring the legislation. it expands counties the ability to collect unused drugs from nursing homes and drug makers and provide them to people who need them. supporters say it will help one-third of uninsured people in california who can't afford the medicines. >> santa clara valley medical center hosted a meeting. organizers said it's particularly timely because of the brain injuries to gabriel

that's the beginning of our cool-down. it's not going to get cold. it's just going to get cooler. tomorrow, another nice day but not 70s. tomorrow, temperatures mostly in the 60s. what happens tomorrow? significant cool-down. 65 in santa rosa. dropping 10 degrees. 65 in san jose. that's not bad for february. still going to be very nice. sunday will be the coolest day on the week. as the weak weather system gets close to us, bumps up along the coast. cooler on saturday. sunday, a few more clouds and cooler as well, then back here, a chance for a few sprinkles as we go in to next week. nothing big though. here we are on saturday, lunchtime. nice day. sunday, 4:00, clouds like we forecasted. then here comes monday, 3:00, not a bad day. here comes tuesday night in to wednesday night, your best bet for showers. doesn't look like

a big deal at all. then a few scattered clouds. so we're basically dry. through the weekend, the thing you'll notice will be a little cooler tomorrow, about 10 degrees cooler, then further cooling as we head in to sunday. we're not cooling in to the 20s or 30s. we're cooling in to the 60s. so just another great bay area weekend. your bay area weekend in view right there. weather looks good this weekend. a few clouds on sunday. don't change your plans. in the middle of next week, we'll get more sprinkles. >> tonight the countdown is on. and will this be the winner? we're learning what the os car show will focus on sunday night. owners compared their trucks to a chevy silverado? i can see myself driving in this for hours and hours. i like it.
