good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it's february 25th. >> cool and breezy when i stepped oust this morning. let's get to rosemary and a quick peek at that saturday forecast. good morning, rosemary. >> good morning to you! if you have to be outdoors this morning, grab that windbreaker it is breezy out there. it's a chilly start as well. and we'll be notably cooler in throughout the afternoon. in the extended forecast we have a chance for sprinkles. i'll show you all that coming up this just a few moments. violence on the streets of oakland this morning has one man in the hospital and police searching for a gunman. it all happened at 3:30 at 14th and webster, and allie rasmus joining us now live with what happened. >> reporter: claudine, the intersection is still closed to traffic and to pedestrians as police continue their investigation. according to one of officers here, this road could be shut down for about the next hour or some of the car you see in the middle of that crosswalk, off to the left, that's where the

victim was sitting when he was shot. this happened around 3:30 this morning. police say the victim was waiting in his car at that time to pick up someone at one of the three nightclubs on this corner. police say the man waiting in his car may have gotten into an argument with someone about him parking there. the man then shot the guy in the car and took off. police are still searching for the gunman. the victim was taken to the hospital with a gunshot injury although officers say the victim is expected to survive. and when the daytime at least 14th and webster is usually a quiet part of downtown oakland, although because of the investigation the street closure many of the smaller shops and businesses on the street won't be able to open on time this morning. we talked to a woman who owns the brown couch cafe, which is located on the ground floor right below one of those three nightclubs. and she says something has got to be done about the violence but like many people she's not sure what the solution is. >> you know, quit being on the street shooting each other up. you can tell people to that.

they're out there -- i don't know! i'm at my wits' end. i don't know. what do you do? >> reporter: she says she and other businesses in this area have talked about forming their own neighborhood association and talking to the city about possibly limiting the hours of some of the nightclub's better on this block. we'll continue to stay on the story and bring you any more developments as they come in. this morning two people are in police custody after a chase through the streets of oakland. we want to show you video from the scene of the crash at 35th near foothill boulevard. police tried to pull a car over around love and 11:30 but the driver crashed. the two people in the car took on on foot were caught by police about a block away. police say the car was not stolen and it's still not clear why the two people tried to run. just after 11:00 last night, a car crashed briefly knocked out power to an area along the oakland-alameda border. police believe the driver was likely speeding on fruitvale before the car crashed into a

power pole. nearby traffic lights went out. the driver was taken to the hospital in stable condition. a pg&e crew arrived a short time later to restore power. only on 2, ktvu's amber lee has obtained exclusive video of interviews between serial killer lauren herzog in police. he provides chilling details of the murders commented by wesley shermantine. herzog was arrested in march of mane 99 and told police he was afraid of shermantine and said they had not been close friends for eight years. during the interview, he triked the night shermantine raped and killed cindy. >> [audio not understandable] >> herzog also told police he saw shermantine kill 16-year- old chevy wheeler. he says shermantine admitted to

killing at least 20 people. a chemical leak made 19 people sick in a sacramento saferway. the store was evacuated before 8:00 last night. some workers saw a mysterious mist. the victim suffered headaches and nausea. >> also have a process to make sure that the foods are safe or what foods may need to be destroyed. >> a hazmat team says the smell was likely freon. firefighters opened vents to get rid of the smell and the store reopen two ours later. nelson mandela is resting in a south african hospital, suffering from a stomach illness. the 93-year-old has been in poor health. he was hospitalized last year for an acute respiratory inspection. he was elected south africa's first black president in 1994. he had spent 27 years in prison, fighting against apartheid. california republicans are

meeting in the peninsula this weekend for a major g.o.p. convention. campaign signs fill almost every inch of space inside the burlingame hyatt. today is a big day at presidential candidate and former u.s. house speaker newt gingrich scheduled to address the delegates. the theme of the convention is reaching out to new voters and there will be a special town hall with asian learns and young voters. >> what we want to see is how united we can be. there's a lot of republicans throughout the state, and we need to get together and work for the common good of getting republicans elected to office. >> california holds its primary in june. formal presidential hopeful herman cain is expected to appear today with gingrich. next week a judge will decide what evidence can be used in the domestic violence cases against sheriff ross mirkarimi. prosecutors released photos of his wife showing a bruise on her right bicep allegedly

international flicked by mirkarimi during a new year's eve fight, from a video shot by lopez and her neighbor. the defense is seeking to exclude the video, claiming lopez was preparing for a custody battle over their son. >> this case could break a couple ways. for all we know, come the defense case she could say i did say this to my neighbor but that was only part of the story. >> lopez denies any abuse occurred and prosecutors say she is refusing to cooperate with them. mirkarimi is charged with misdemeanor domestic violence battery, dissuading a witness and child endangerment. >> a san francisco police officer pleaded not guilty to assaulting a woman while off- duty. last week 29-year-old richard sawyer easy was charged with felony assault and domestic violence charges in connection with the incident. he is accused of pushing a woman he was dating, causing her to fall and hit her head. if convicted he faces up to four years in prison. livermore police say five teenage boys have admitted to hurling rocks at houses last

weekend. the stones shattered windows and cracked walls. one rock landed next to a crib. officers say the teens are remorseful and didn't think they could hurt others. the kids threw rock while speeding through the neighborhood in a subaru forrester. a surveillancer surveillance photo led to the arrests. the soda fire their declared 100% contained in an hour. the fire starred thursday afternoon. a pile of burning brush from a nearby vineyard quickly got out of control, fueled by the heavy wind. helicopters and hand crews were called in to fight the flames, which burned 200 acres. firefighters say a february wildfire is rare, but because of the dry winter weather, they have battled more than 300 brushfires in just the last two months. >> it's the vegetation around it. we have the grasses and then the brush itself, the brush is very dry. and so that's contributing to the cause of the fire. this type of weather this time

9 fairfield. and san jose oakland reporting 14 miles per hour with wind gusts to 25 miles per hour. livermore is a light breeze but you have it there as well. temperatures are cool, and when you add the chill factor it will feel from 5 to 7 degrees cooler than what the temperature reads. northwesterly breeze in napa right about 8 miles per hour right now. so again, a cool start out there. oakland hills reporting gusts to anywhere from 16 miles per hour to 28, north and south. mount diablo 47 and atlas peak, 15 miles per hour near where that fire continues to burn and hopefully fully contained soon. your satellite radar here, this is the system bringing us the wind. not bringing us any rain, this will stay north. but we are dealing with those brisk conditions and that will continue for your saturday. so partly cloudy for today, a lot cooler than what we have seen over the last couple days and the winds expected 10 to 20 miles per hour lasting throughout the afternoon. take a look at this graph. it shows and puts into perspective what we'll see. we saw that should say friday.

good morning to you. a live look from san rafael towards the city this morning. it's a cool start out there, and fairly strong breezes blowing across the bay area. new this morning, nato is recalling all personnel from afghan ministries after two americans were shot to death inside the interior ministry in kabul. officials are not saying much about the attack except that it happened in a secure room. nato is rejecting initial reports of a shooter was a westerner. the gunman remains at large. rioting continues for a fifth day against the korans at the military base. protestors tried to storm a government building. at least 25 people have been killed since wednesday. a fireball inside a maryland home has injured seven firefighters and two are in critical condition this

morning. fire officials say while firefighters were fighting the firing a sudden rush of air went into the house, creating a fireball that engulfed the firefighters. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. following the shooting death of a washington state trooper, there is growing support for enacting a blue alert, like the amber alert for missing children it would notify the public about someone who killed a police officer. it took law enforcement nine hours to capture a man suspected of killing the trooper earlier this week. supporters of the blue alert system say officers would have been aid fundamental the suspect information was posted on freeway billboards. >> i'm realistic this will happen again, and this is one tool that we can use to help catch our worst offenders. >> california is one of more than a dozen states with the blue alert system. the cost is one reason washington state says it does not have it. in our election 2012 coverage, only three more days until the michigan g.o.p.

police in the central valley are trying to figure out who sent feces to an i.r.s. office. police and hazmat responded to the i.r.s. office in president know yesterday after an employee reported a suspicious package with a musty odor in the mailroom. authorities evacuated the building and tried to determine what was in the package. crews found the package contained feces, pictures and other items. in washington, d.c., the u.s. capitol rotunda was closed after a white powder was discovered steps away from the office of the speaker of the house. police tested the substance. the powder was candy. the city of richmond wants to eliminate junk mail. the contra costa times reports richmond lawmakers will decide next month whether to join a nationwide campaign. more than 100 cities, including san jose and los gatos, have signed with catalog choice. it's a berkeley non-profit group that alerts telemarketers

and vendors to stop sending junk mail to residents. it's similar to the do-not-call list. each year americans receive 83 billion pieces every unsolicited mail and catalogs. there's more trouble ahead for blockbuster. the chain is closing 500 or a third of its remaining stores nationwide. the decision was made by dish network, which bought blockbuster out of perhaps last year. no word on which stores are slated foreclosure but they will be picked based on sales. the now bankrupt solyndra is leaving behind a toxic electric see. this building is one of several manufacturing facilities that had been leased by solyndra. in court filings the property owner i star claims solyndra left behind barrels of unknown chemicals and equipment contaminated with lead. issa wants solyndra to pay for the clean-up. it was a birthday celebration to honor and remember the original apple.

success starts with the soil. caught on tape, a woman in delaware was rescued from her car seconds before a train hit it early yesterday morning. police say the driver made a wrong turn, you can see she is stuck on the tracks. she tried to get the car going but it wanted on mover. witnesses say the driver would not get out of car until a man finally pulled her seconds before that happened. that train hit the car but she was okay. this morning the upper midwest is dig itself out of a winter storm. one michigan county reported 50 crashes yesterday morning. one woman skated past a stop sign and slammed in a semi- truck. parts of michigan received about a half foot of snow and more snow is predicted today and later next week. >> a type of condition killing off bees is threatening our nut

ktvu reporter amber lee has been given exclusive access to more than 10 hours of police in views with serial killer lauren herzog, starting from the day he was arrested. they detail the crimes he says childhood friend wesley shermantine committed. he is on death row for killing many people. herzog provided chilling details of the night a woman was raped and murdered. >> the remains of the woman and wheeler were found in calaveras county after shermantine told police where the bodies were. thousands of bone fragments have also been found. he says those are the remains of herzog's victims. herzog killed himself last month after shermantine started revealing the location of the

bodies. and coming up in just about 30 minutes, we will air amber lee's complete story with more of herzog's interview here on mornings on 2. at this hour the search is on for whoever shot a man on the streets of oakland early this morning. happened at 14th webster around 3:30, and ktvu's allie rasmus is live now at the scene with what happened and the investigation now underway. >> reporter: the intersection of 14th and webster is still shut down to traffic and pedestrians. according to some of the officers here, it will probably stay closed for the next hour. up until about 10 minutes ago they were waiting for the investigators to arrive and we don't know what was lined the delay but it appears couple of the investigators are now here. the car you see in the middle of that crosswalk behind the police and the investigator there, that is where the victim was shot. police say the man was sitting in his car waiting to pick someone up at the caribbean club nightclub, right across the street from the car. police say it was around 3:30 this morning then when another man walked up to the vehicle,

he and the guy in the car got into some sort of argument about parking and the man shot the other guy in the car and then took off. police are still searching for that gunman. the victim was taken to the hospital with a gunshot injury although an officer here says the victim is expected to recover. and along with the nightclubs on this street, there are a number of other shops and small businesses near this downtown intersection. many of them won't be able to open this morning because of the investigation and the street closure. we talked to a woman who owns the brown couch cafe, which is located right underneath one of the nightclubs. and she says she is frustrated with the violence in oakland. >> for me personally, i'm trying to find out what i can do to make my safety. i have to think about me. i have to be safe. my business needs to be safe. >> is there anything police or the city should do. >> they can't sit in front of my cafe and watch out for me. they've got other things to do.

they arrested one 18-year-old man. police say he had taken off his clothes and shoes and dropped the gun. the seconds gunman has not been found. police say the intended target an older man was also not hit by the gunfire. to help curb the violence in alameda county judge has approved a new gang inning junction for oakland covering this area and names 40 alleged gang members. the judge's ruling means they cannot associate with each other if that designated area. there are, though, a few exceptions to this, which include church, school and work. police say the 40 individuals have been arrested, 200 times, and have more than 100 convictions between them. it's been more than 60 years since harold care senn retired from the oakland police department but today his legacy lives on. he then began investing in napa real estate. he passed away without an heir in 1997 and left an estate worth $1.3 million to the oakland police foundation.

overturned in a creek. a 61-year-old petaluma woman standing at the gazebo was thrown some 60 feet and died at the scene. two others suffered minor injuries. the driver and a female passenger sustained moderate injuries. investigators are check to be see fundamental driver suffered a medical emergency before that accident. four university of washington students are recovering this morning after two of their school vans collided in monterey county. the vans carrying 22 students were traveling side by side when they crashed near king city yesterday. one vehicle overturned and two people were ejected. students were on their way to a conference in santa barbara county. muni is replacing a window of a downtown office building shattered by a piece of equipment that flew off a bus. this is a look at the damage to the building on bush street. workers say one employee was sitting right by that window and the projectile just missed him. muni says i piece of equipment

that connects the bus to overhead wire got caught and flew off. the agency is still reviewing the operations procedures. scott mitchell, the man accused of driving an suv into a san francisco muni tunnel, is changing his not-guilty plea. yesterday he pleaded no contest to driving under the influence. he was arrested in january after allegedly driving into the tunnel at church street and got stuck. muni service was shut down for more than two hours and trains moved slowly to the day as repairs were made. he was sentenced to three years probation, nine months of dui classes and community service. and muni's most heavily used rail line is shut down this weekend, the first of six straight weekends that crews will be working on a rail replacement project on the line. bus shuttles will be in place between ocean beach and church street. the line is expected to be back in service before the monday morning commute. the 91-year-old woman who drove her car through a san jose nursing home won't face

charges. in june leona fernandez crashed into the home, killing two elderly residents if injuring four others. the district attorney says the accident happened by mistake, not because she was impaired or negligent. her license has been taken away and she has not driven since the accidents. prosecutors say until the crash she did have a perfect driving record. next tuesday the 49ers take another step towards building that stadium in santa clara. the city council is expected to approve a leasing -- a lease authorizing construction to begin in four months. the deal will generate $200 million in rent over four decades. however, due to inflation, the revenue will actually be a little more than $30 million. the team plans to play in the billion dollar stadium for the 2014 season. >> we have new information is on the story we first told you about it the 10:00 news. stanford is now agreeing not to take over the residential house of kfi in april.

good morning to you! a live look, mostly clear skies, a live shot, mount diablo, winds are blowing to 37 miles per hour this morning. there's a new push for safety changes on the overhead bins of the boeing 737 jets. the issue is with the objection again and ventilation equipment that's built into the bins. national transportation officials say they can fall out during a survival crash and injure passengers. the ntsb says the government should require changes in the design of the bins. boeing says it's aware of the recommendations and will work with the government on the problem. it was a chaotic day at san francisco airport after a suspicious bag trigger the evacuation of terminal one. just before 11:30 a.m., yesterday, police were notified that a suspicious device had showed up on the x-ray machine. police say they assessed the

situation and decided to evacuate the terminal. an elderly woman in a wheelchair caused the security threat. >> what was in the package was oxygen cylinders and generator for a passenger traveling on oxygen. what made it suspicious is she couldn't answer the scener's questions about what was in the bag because she said she wasn't the one who packed it. so that triggered a red flag. >> a little more than two hours after the device was spotted at the airport, it was back in operation. hundreds of passengers were late delayed or stranded. a boat that police say ran aground during a drunk incident is now out of the marina. a huge crane lifted it out of the water and on to a flatbed truck yesterday afternoon. as we first told you on our morning news yesterday, the boat crashed into the rocks in the early morning hours. 37-year-old tanisha was arrested for possession of stolen property and dui but police say they don't have enough evidence to hold thompson. officers say no one saw her operating the boat and she claims someone else was driving

it. a man is under arrest after being found on a boat in mare island strait with six pounds of marijuana and several ounces every hashish. peacing tanker reported a 35- foot sailboat acting erratically west of the carquinez bridge thursday night. coast guard crews found the boat turning and tight circles. so they boarded and found a 53- year-old man with the drugs. a second service member cleared of hazing a bay area marine who later committed suicide while serving in afghanistan. this is video of lance corporal harry lu of santa clara. he shot and killed himself last april after allegedly getting beaten and hazed for falling asleep while on duty. a court in hawaii found lance corporal carlos not guilty of assault and maltreatment. a squad leader was acquitted earlier this month. a third marine pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 days confinement and a demotion. the marine corps is identifying the seven men

the contra costa county sheriff's department is investigating reports of shots fired at a house party in discovery bay. officials say they got a call just after midnight that there was a shooting on discovery bay boulevard. when officers arrived they found shell casings but no victims. they also found blood on the ground and party-goers told them there was a fight but they did not give any information on a shooting. the sheriff's department launched their helicopter to search the area but did not find any victims. oakland police are trying to determine why two people ran from them during a late night traffic stop. this is video from the scene of 35th avenue near foothill boulevard. police tried to pull a car over around 11:30 last night but the driver sped off and crashed. the two people in the car took off on foot, but they were caught by police just about a block away. police have not said why they pulled the car over, just that it was not stolen. and a car crash in a power pole near the oakland-alameda border after 11:00 last night. the single car wreck knocked

out power in the area. police believe the driver was likely speeding on fruitvale before slam into the pole. traffic lights did go out, and the driver was taken to the hospital in stable condition. a pg&e crew arrived to restore the power. only on 2, videotape of one of the so-called speed freak killers describing cold-blooded murders in chilling detail. lauren herzog and his friend wesley shermantine are thought to be responsible for 20 or more deaths. in the tapes obtained by ktvu, herzog tells investigators how shermantine raped and killed a woman named cindy. >> herzog admitted to helping shermantine place the body of 25-year-old sandra into short- term fine's vehicle. he told investigators he was

scared of his friend and ashamed of his fear for not helping the young woman. a source told us herzog was considered shermantine's roads dog. he stopped being friends with shermantine eight years before his arrest. >> herzog also tells investigators shermantine killed 16-year-old chevy wheeler every stockton in 1985 and buried her on his parents property but didn't knowth exact lotion. investigators have recently identified both remains on that

a chemical leak made 19 people sick in a sacramento safeway. the store was evacuated just before 8:00 last night. some workers reported seeing a mysterious mist near refrigeration units in the deli department. the victim said he suffered headaches and nausea. >> also have a process to make sure it that the foods are safe in there, or what foods may need to be destroyed. >> hazmat team tested the air and say the smell was likely freon. firefighters opened vents throughout the building to get rid of the smell. the store reopened two hours after the evacuation. right now cal-fire is assessing the soda fire and is expected to declare it fully contained. that fire started thursday afternoon on napa county soda canyon road. crews say a pile of burning brush from a nearby vineyard got out of control, fueled by the heavy wind. helicopters and hand cruise were called in to fight the flames, which burned 200 acres. firefighters say a february

conditions, a cool start to the day. and the 1 are expected to continue for the afternoon. caught on tape, a woman in delaware was rescued from her car just seconds before a train struck it. this happened early yesterday morning. police say the driver made a wrong turn on to the track and then got stuck. she tried to get the car going, but it wouldn't move. witnesses say the driver would not get out of the car so a man finally pulled her out. just seconds before that train struck the car. a fireball inside a maryland home has injured seven firefighters, two remain in critical condition this morning. the fire broke out last night in a vacant home. fire officials say while firefighters were fighting the fire, a sudden rush every air went into the house, creating a fireball that engulfed the firefighters. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. after the shooting death they washington state trooper there's growing pressure by lawmakers across the country to approve a so-called blue alert. like the amber alert, the blue alert would notify the public

afternoon. an investigation is underway into a fatal crash in sonoma county. the highway patrol says a vehicle slammed into a tree on highway 12 and trinity road before midnight. highway patrol briefly closed the area while investigating the cause of the collision. authorities say a 74-year- old motorist drove through a crowd of people waiting to take a positive line into sonoma county yesterday afternoon in the parking lot of the redwood alliance christian conference grounds just outside occidental. witnesses say the karak sell rated on the highway and then through a gay scene open and in a creek. a 61-year-old woman was thrown 60 feet and died at the scene. the driver and a female passenger sustained minor injuries. authoritying are looking to see if the driver suffered a

meeting. live in burlingame. a new intersection remains closed as police investigate a new shooting. this car in the middle of the intersection at west 14th avenue. around 3:30 this morning a man was sitting in the car waiting to pick someone up. the man got into an argument with another man that opened fire into the car. police are now looking for the shooter. the injured man was taken to the hospital where he is expected to recover. this morning two people are in police custody after a chase through the streets of oakland. this is video from the scene of the crash near 35th avenue. police say they tried to pull a car over around 11:30 last night but the driver sped off and crashed. the two people in the car caught off on foot. police say the car was not stolen and still not clear why the two people tried to run. and just after 11:00 last night a car crash briefly

store reopened. soda fire burning in napa county is expected to be fully contained sometime this morning. the fire started thursday afternoon on soda canyon road. a pile of burning crush from a nearby vineyard quickly got out of control. as it was fueled by heavy winds. helicopters and hand crews were called in to fight the flames that burned about 200 acres. a february wild fire is rare but because of the dry winter weather they have battled more than 300 brush fires in the last two months. >> it's vegetation around it. we have the grasses and the brush itself. the brush is very dry. that is contributing to the cause of the fire. this type of weather this time of year is not normal. so it's hard to believe that this stuff is burning the way it is. >> quick update for you now. the soda fire is fully contained. so far there is no word about any fines or fire fighting costs for the vineyard

baity said she was in a house yesterday when two gunmen started shooting. the bullets just barely missed hitting her one-year-old daughter. >> she just started walking. so she's literally standing at the screen door and something said pull her from the screen door. >> oakland police were around the corner when the shots were fired and chased the gunmen over a fence. they arrested one 18-year-old man. he had taken off his clothes and shoes and dropped the gun. the second gunman still hasn't been found. the intended target an older man wasn't hit by the gunfire. to help curb the violence an alameda county judge has approved a new gang injunction. it covers a two square foot mile and names alleged 40 gang members. they can't associate with each other in that designated area. there are a few exceptions to that which include church, school, and work. the 40 individuals have been arrested 200 times and more than 100 convictions between

the big headline today the 11:30 speech luncheon with current republican presidential candidate newt gingrich. allie rasmus. right now occupy protestors are participating in a march through pleasanton. it's being lead by workers from castle wood country club. they are protesting the lockout of the food staff. they also say the economic inequality in the country has to change. authorities say a 74-year- old motorist drove right through a crud of people waiting to take a popular zip line ride in sonoma county. it happened yesterday afternoon in the parking lot of the redwood alliance christian grounds. witnesses say the car accelerated through a curve on the bohemian highway and right through a gazebo and overturned in a nearby creek. a 61-year-old petaluma woman standing at the gazebo was thrown some 60 feet and died at

the scene. two others suffered minor injuries. the driver and female passenger sustained moderate injuries. police are checking to see if the driver suffered a medical emergency before that accident. 91-year-old woman who drove her car through a san jose nursing home is not facing charges. in june fernandez crashed into the home and killing one and injuring four others. it happened by mistake. her license has been taken away and she has not driven since the accident. prosecutors say until the crash she had a perfect driving record. both ran -- a boat ran aground is now out of the marina. a huge crane lifted it out of the water and put it on a flat bed truck yesterday morning. that boat cracked into the rocks during the early morning hours.
