at 6:00. i'm ken wayne, presidential hopeful and former speaker of the house newt gingrich taking center stage in burling game. our coverage begins with the convention. today, there was the message he brought to the state g.o.p. >> reporter: nearly an hour and a half after the lunch began, newt gingrich took center stage. it was not his first appearance before the g.o.p.ers today. the convention's focus? to reach out to all voters, in the town hall meeting, the former speaker and now presidential hopeful made his first appearance. >> i'm just trying to get back to a pre-obama world. >> reporter: later he tried to rally his fellow republicans. then he began a long attack on president obama's energy policies. >> we have more than enough energy in the united states. that we do not have to rely on

foreign countries. but we have an anti-american energy government and government. >> reporter: they are looking at the expense of gas prices spiking. >> if you would like to have national energy and american energy policy, never bow to a saudi king, newt gingrich will be your candidate. >> reporter: a large crowd gathered here for day two of the republican party convention. newt gingrich prompts if elected -- promises if elected he will bring the pipeline from canada to the u.s. >> if we don't do this, we can look at every gain, no matter how small, is disappearing. >> reporter: others spoke of ron paul. >> it is the message behind the movement. >> reporter: newt gingrich stands behind his message to

the state. >> i think it will play a role. >> reporter: tomorrow is the last day of the convention. we are live in burling game. and herman cain helped to introduce newt gingrich as did michael regan. reporting live, ktvu channel 2 action news. and more details on the republican primary, the party will allocate the 172 delegates in proportion, three for each state's 53 congressional districts, and more for the state wide vote. and the other republican candidates for president campaigned today in michigan ahead of tuesday's primary there. mitt romney spoke in troy, one of several stops oned intended today in the state. he attacks president obama for adding to the deficit, and challenged santorum's principles. meanwhile, santorum hoping to score an upset victory in michigan, the state where mitt

romney grew up. in a speech in st. clara shores, he talked of being a supporter. president obama used his weekly on-line address to tackle the recent jump in gas prices. >> while there are no short term silver bullets when it comes to gas prices, i directed my administration to look for every single area where we can make an impact and help the consumers in the months ahead, from permitting to delivery bottle necks to what is going on in the oil markets. >> reporter: the president also took a swipe at republicans who say they make demands for more oil drilling every time gas prices go up. mr. obama is calling on congress to end the subsidiaries' saying they're profitable enough as it is, and don't need the help. and ktvu obtaining video of police discussions that shed new light on the killing spree in the central valley.

loren herzog was arrested in march of '99, and during the interview he described the time where he and his accomplice, wes shermantine, raped and killed cindi vanderheiden. her remains were discovered in calaveras county earlier this month. >> i knew it was wes. i started to get out -- was just like slashing and hacking -- >> herzog was convicted of three murders. the convictions were later overturned on a technicality. he committed suicide in january. stay with ktvu for continuing developments in the speed freak killer's case. ktvu's amber lee is continuing to look through the 19 hours of tape we obtained. she will have more details on the interview tomorrow at 5:00, and the 10:00 news. and police are searching for a suspect in a south san francisco neighborhood.

earlier today, the officers and s.w.a.t. team searched an apartment, but found nobody inside. police are looking a few doors down from the apartment, searching for a gunman they say opened fire earlier in the day at another location. nobody was hurt had, and so far no arrests have been made. and today marks two years since employees have been locked out of their jobs at an east bay country club in a bitter labor dispute. live in pleasantton, where some of them held a rally with the help of the occupy protesters. >> reporter: it is quiet here at castle rock country club, but earlier today it was crowded with former employees who were by the occupiers, gathering to rally for their jobs back. this is something you don't often see, signs supporting the 1100%. >> they don't deserve health care or good jobs, they should go find another job and get out of our way, we want to go. >> reporter: what is your name.

>> my name is phil rich. >> reporter: they are trying to prove a point in the policies, when they joined forces with the local union. today is the two-year anniversary of when 61 employees were locked out of their jobs at castle wood country club because the union turned down a contract. the former waiters and janitors marched in the area. >> we're still struggling to pay the rent and the bills. >> reporter: but the country club says that not that many people are teeing off these days. the membership is off. >> the economy is also not as strong as it used to be. you put the factors together, there is only so much money. >> reporter: for the past 10 years, the health club used to pay 100% of the employee and families. but management can't off set that because of the rising price of health care. >> we have chosen to give them a proposal that provides 100% coverage for the employees. but there has been some costs passed on for the family care

coverage. >> by making the 10 an hour, so that means that i will have to leave one check completely to pay the health insurance. i can live -- can't live with just one check. >> reporter: one spokesperson said they would love to have the employees back, and they are in union negotiations. reporting live, ktvu channel 2 action news. and the contra costa county man is hospitalized following a dramatic rescue from 30 feet up. take a look at this picture, the man is being lowered from the tree he was trimming. these contra costa fire officials say he was knocked unconscious when a branch hit him in the head, rescue crews had to wait for a ladder truck to arrive from antioch to get him down. he was taken to the medical center and is expected to survive. and police say a man was critically injured in a shooting in downtown oakland. the 23-year-old victim was found in his car in the intersection of webster and

14th. police say around 3:30 this morning, the victim was waking to pick up -- waiting to pick somebody up. he got into an argument with another man who opened fire. the gunman is still on the loose. an 18-year-old man in custody after police say he pulled a machete during a fight at a rugby match. the two fought at the allen high school at about 8:30 last night. investigators say one teen was seen with the machete. they stopped him before anybody was killed. and authorities identified a woman in a freak accident. wolf, of petaluma, was with her family when a car slammed into a waiting area, killing her. the highway patrol is investigating whether the 74- year-old driver, john thomas of san francisco had a medical emergency. thomas and her passenger were

seriously injured. and the 200-acre fire contained at about 8:30 this morning. the crews were there all day, mopping up, looking for hot spots. investigators say the fire broke out thursday when a pile of brush got out of control. fire crews attacking a two alarm fire at a laundry center this evening. they were working on the roof with a torch when the old laundry lint in the attic caught fire. many firefighters didn't have far to go to get to the fire. >> we were at st. rose church, half a block away, we were honoring one of our retired firefighters, who passed away. >> crews were cracking the building next to it as a precaution. the emotional mission coming to an end in oakland, the moving message behind this man's 12-year long journey.

. some tense moments at the sacramento international airport today, the authorities shut down terminal b for nearly an hour, starting at 9:00, police believe the people were

-- it turned out not to be the case, agents located five people and re-screened them. the tsa says two officers have been removed from duty. and police in livermore arresting two teens, who threw rocks and almost hit a baby's crib. the boys say they admitted throwing the rocks last saturday morning, when 20 incidents were reported. one of the rocks was lodged next to a house and the baby was almost injured. the boys appeared sorry. and today in oakland, lorraine blanco reports the journey was fueled by a family tragedy, and a need to reach others. >> love life. >> reporter: four miles to hike, the final trek on a journey for the heart and mind, for 60-year-old steve fugate. >> this is my 6th and final

walk, i walked in all the lower 48 states. >> reporter: love life, it seems like a simple message, but it comes with a deeper meaning of a painful memory and a continuing battle. >> i lost my son to suicide in '99. and it nearly destroyed my life. i diplomat want it happening to other parents. >> reporter: so in 2001, the grieving father sent out a message, and people all over followed. >> and there have been many that said they were going to take their life or were thinking about it. and then they decided not to. >> reporter: in the oakland hills, a woman ran out of her home just to hug him. julia lost her dad to suicide 20 years ago. >> my boys looked out the window, said mom come here, you have to see this. so we came running out. i'm so -- it is wonderful he happened to walk by my house. >> i fall in love with the act of breathing.

>> take care, god bless you. >> reporter: fugate decided to end his labor of love here after meeting an oakland man on his trip. the two connected, kept in touch. and in fugate's final steps, the final advice. >> i believe i get back what i put out. i just love -- people are -- >> reporter: in oakland, lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 action news. while today was fugate's final walk, there is a fundraiser scheduled at the bistro in oakland, so it is to raise money to continue to spread his message. and a relative of senator kennedy, taking his son out of a new york ward. douglas kennedy, who was a reporter for fox news says he was trying to take the baby outside for fresh air. the nurses tried to stop him, saying the baby was supposed to remain inside the ward. surveillance video shows one nurse falling to the floor during the struggle.

the hospital security later stopped kennedy from leaving. and in afghanistan, a gunman who shot and killed two american military officers today in kabul is still at large. the victims, a u.s. colonel and major have not been identified. they were reportedly shot inside a secure compound inside kabul. that comes on the fifth day of unrest over the burning of the copies of the quran. the taliban has claimed responsibility for the shootings. and today, civilians being evacuated from the city of homs. two western journalists are reportedly not among those rescued. the united nations estimated that forces there have killed 5400 people since january in a crack down against political protests. and relatives of nelson mandela say that the former south africa president was hospitalized for hernia

surgery, he had been dealing with stomach pain for a while. they say his health is good, and can be released early next week, likely. and a california sonoma state park will be saved from the chopping block. a director will likely approve a bid from sonoma county to take it over. the county will remove it from the list of 70 state parks at risk of closure, due to state budget cuts. and hundreds of people taking the plunge in san francisco today to raise money for special olympics. that will take your breath away. organizers say about a thousand people took the plunge at the park. there was also a costume contest, and star wars. you can see a lot of folks have pretty creative ideas out there. in all they raised more than 240,000 for the special olympics athletes. how did that 54-degree water feel? >> it is -- we all ride
