instead of an east or northeast breeze. the temperatures there santa rosa, napa at 30 degrees. fairfield 35. the cloud cover is holding up. temperatures you can see where that is at 40s down to san jose. that tells you it will be a very cool, chilly day. it's a cold morning out there. partly sunny. isolated hither and yawn showers. not a lot. the end result is partly sunny cool and breezy. a lot of 50s on the temps. we have a system moving in on wednesday. the mornings will be cold. as we look ahead temperatures will start to warm up. here is sal. steve, good morning. traffic is moving along nicely around the bay area to start off this monday morning commute. traffic looks good as you drive up to the mccarthur maze, no major problems there. also the problems that we had earlier or the construction we had earlier right now on the westbound bay bridge that looks good. no major problems getting into san francisco. and if you're driving on san

jose's freeways northbound 280 that looks good getting up to highway 17. let's go back to the desk. we begin with developing news from oakland. ktvu tara moriarty is on the scene of an early morning apartment fire and joins us now with the details. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. you know we have good news to report. no one was seriously injured in this fire. so that is the good news right off the bat. behind me there is a grown up of people standing. this is all residence that live inside this 16-unit building. it's a rather large building. they all made it out safely. that is the good news. let's take a look at the video we shot early this morning. one woman is being treated for smoke inhalation and other medical issues. the fire started if her apartment. she woke up when she smelled the smoke. the smoke detectors were working but that's not what awakened her. she was able to walk out of the

apartment building here off of skyler street when those flames happened at 1:30. firefighters then went through the whole process of evacuating the people living here and as you can see again if we're back out here live, they are all standing here waiting for word to go back in. they will be allowed to go back their apartment. they are waiting for fire investigators to arrive on scene. once he aryes they will be able to go back into their apartment. overnight fire in san jose destroyed a backyard shed and caused concern for nearby businesses. that was behind a home on south 7th street at 12:45 this morning. on the other side of the fence there are several businesses. firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading and no one was hurt. the homeowner stored scrap metal and furniture in the shed

but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. only on two we have more of our exclusive video showing the police interrogation of loren herzog. one of the suspected serial killers that lead police to a massive search for victims. ktvu allie rasmus is in our newsroom this morning looking over the video and joins us now. >> reporter: the interrogation video dates back to 1999 shortly after loren herzog and wesley shermantine were arrested. this exclusive video shows police questioning herzog. in that interrogation herzog implied that shermantine was the ring leader in their crimes. he calls shermantine the cold blooder killer and it was his friend that killed 24 people and he was along for the time. he described how shermantine killed two men. the victims had been pulled over on the side of the road and he walked up to the car

with a gun. >> which did he drive up to first? >> the driver side. >> then what happened? >> he started shooting. >> human times did you think he shot? once he's done shooting, then what happens? >> took them out of the car. >> reporter: herzog said they stole a total of $11 from those victims. the bodies of many victims has never been found. just in the last month shermantine provided this new information in the case. shermantine is on death row. herzog committed suicide last month. over the weekend shermantine gave an interview to the stockton record. in that interview he remembers where many more victims are buried in the towns of stockmen, modesto and mill

valley. he is working on drawing more maps. live in the newsroom allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. we will continue to follow the story throughout the morning. there is more video to look through. we will have new details throughout the week. this morning lawyers in sheriff mirkarimi's domestic violence case return to the courtroom for a crucial hearing. the judge will decide if the jury will be able to see a 50 second video taken by a neighbor. it shows his wife pointing out a large bruise on her arm. lopez told her neighbor that her husband inflicted that injury on her during a fight on new years eve. the defense is fighting to exclusion the video from the trial saying that she was preparing to use it in a possible custody fight with her husband. hells angel on the run for months is behind bars. 38-year-old steven ruiz is accused of killing a former

hells angel at a funeral last october. police arrested him at a motel in fremont saturday night. investigators say they are surprised ruiz was hiding out a few miles away from the scene of the crime. >> for him to be caught where he was is confounding to us. a lot of times in homicide cases like these, the suspect gets as far away from the scene of the crime as possible. you can see ruiz's appearance changed dramatically since the cemetery shooting. san francisco police are asking for your help in the search for a hit and run driver responsible for a deadly crash. that happened shortly before 3:30 sunday morning in the city's financial district. now police say a pickup truck ran a red light at the intersection of californian battery and slimmed into a lincoln town car. the man driving the lincoln was

killed. the other driver got out of his truck and ran away. autopsy is planned today on the body of an oakley man found dead in the delta. they have identified the man as 24-year-old jeremy taylor. authorities don't know yet if his death was accidental or intentional. new details are emerging about the troubles surrounding alameda county supervisor nod yeah lockyer. lockyer's husband bill lockyer was given a sex tape of his wife with another man. this happened six weeks before an incident between nadia lockyer and that other man inside a newark hotel room. no one has been charged in the case. supervisor lockyer announced she has temporary stepped aside from her post and entered rehab. 4:37. this morning the nation's governors including california

governor jerry brown will meet with president obama at the white house. the final day the national golf no, sir winter meeting. president, first lady michelle obama hosted the event. california republicans are looking ahead to the june primary after wrapping up their three-day convention on the peninsula. the state gop held a few final votes yesterday in burling game. most of the major events took place on friday and saturday including a visit by newt gingrich. attendees we talk to said they want the gop nomination fight to stretch out until june giving california influence it normally does not have in an election year. >> i think it's possible the presidential race has been fascinating and there have been so many changes across the last few months. it's possible that california could still be in play in june. >> governor brown also caused a stir.

he went on meet the press yesterday and called the gop field reckless. by contrast, he called president obama a reasonable man. the race for the republican nomination for president continues tomorrow with primary contest in two states. coming up in 11 minutes the two candidates running neck and neck at the top of the polls. right now 4:38. almost 4:39. let's check in with sal for a look at traffic this morning. hi sal. >> hello pam. good morning, to everyone. let's go outside and take a look at what we have now. the traffic is doing well if you are driving on 80 westbound coming up to the mccarthur maze and the metering lights which is off. of course we are look at the toll-- toll plaza. the metering lights are off. no problems on the bridge driving out of san francisco. this morning in the south bay northbound 280 looks good so far as you drive up to highway 17. checking 17 it also has been a nice drive down to the valley. let's go to steve. >> thank you.

and a cold system. remember last week when it was sunny and warm. boy this week a little different twist here. a system moving down the coast. some of the wrap around is producing light rain. mainly toward santa cruz mountains and santa clara valley. it's the cold air coming in behind that system. that system doesn't have a lot of moisture with it. if it did have available moisture there could be very low snow levels. very light rain. mostly cloudy today. cool and breezy but the end result is highs only in the mid 50s. i mentioned scattered showers. air mass get a little destabilized. most of this will be south. i would say santa cruz, monterey and gilroy as well. the wind is already beginning to pick up some of the higher elevations. and nothing outrageous but about 35-40 some of the higher peaks and temperatures if you live up above 1,000 feet. it's only going to be in the 40s today. 30s to the north. cloud cover and breeze. combination of the two keeping

temperatures in the 40s. i expect these to go down throughout the morning here. it will be a slow rebound. one little system here. tomorrow will get a break. it will be really cold tuesday morning. a stronger system looks like it will make it for wednesday. it looks like another one and out. high pressure will come back in. coolest day lows in the 30s. highs i should say in the 50s. if there is any snow, the snow level would be down there around 2500 feet. cool and breezy. a cold morning. partly sunny and cloudy later on today. as we get a little bit of afternoon heating. we will start to see build ups over the hill. it does look like increasing clouds on tuesday. rain looks like it moves if in on wednesday. after that we're back to high and dry. >> thank you, steve. more retaliation for the burning of qurans at a military base. that's what is behind the attack on a military airport in afghanistan. plus how someone may be trying

good morning. cold out there. a few showers mainly to the south with cool and breezy temperatures today. only in the mid 50s under partly sunny skies. palo alto police are increasing patrols following a string of burglars. eight homes were targeted in one day. paul chambers in palo alto with a warning from police. good morning, paul. >> reporter: three of those burglars happened right here on grant avenue at an apartment complex near us. investigators believe people are targeting areas where they believe that homes are unoccupied. police suspect the burglars are knocking or ringing the doorbells. when no one answers they are entering through unlocked side gates or rear doors. sometimes prying doors opened. another burglar happen near middle field road. on top of that, three more burglars occurred at an

apartment complex in chariton avenue. key cards are needed to enter. investigators believe the thieves are following behind residence. the knocking on doors to see if anyone is home before breaking in. the thieves got away with jewelry and electronics. since all eight burglars occurred on friday between 7:30 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon, police are look into the possibility that they are connected. >> think there are multiple crews working in town because the guy graphic differences where these occurred on friday seem it's not the same people. >> reporter: there was also an unsuccessful particular attempt at a home where they tried to enter through a pet door. police are warning to make sure all the doors are locked. even still speak to the person through their door. police say they are also beefing up presence in the area. live in palo alto i'm paul chambers. in afghanistan suicide car

bomber killed at least nine people in a revenge attack on a military airport. the taliban is claiming responsibility for the attack saying it was in retaliation for the burning of quran's at an american military base. no international troops were killed in today's attack. more than 30 people have died in attacks related to the burning of the quran including four u.s. soldiers. syria says the results from the weekend vote will be announced later today. critics are already calling the election a sham. syrians went to the polls yesterday to vote on a new institution that would establish a multiparty. however, critics boycotted the election saying a new constitution isn't enough. they want assad to step down. new information has come out this morning regarding an assassination assault on vladimir putin. he is running for president of

russia. state television reports two conspirators were arrested after a botched explosion blew up their apartment. they admit to being part of a terrorist group trying to kill putin. 4:47. companies including bp were supposed to stand trial for the nation's worst offshore oil spill. a rig exploded in april of 2010. 11 workers died in that gas. 206 gallons of oil spilled out. the british government has received one more week to cut a deal with the committee overseeing tens of thousands of individuals involved in that explosion. >> nobody wants to be at fault or to blame. >> the multibillion dollar trial is expected to take nearly a year to complete. now besides bp other defendants

include the swiss company that owned the rig. and houston based halliburton that provided cementing for the oil drill. counselors will be on hand today at a long beach elementary school after a 11- year-old girl died following a fight with another 11-year-old girl. joanna ramos and another classmate fought. later that night ramos' mother said her daughter began vomiting and lost consciousness. she was rushed to hospital and died during surgery. investigators are waiting on an autopsy to determine the cause of death. republican presidential capped date santorum will get protection starting tomorrow. he requested the protection after a rowdy rally. mitt romney already has secret

service protection. he has had that since february 1st. tomorrow both arizona and michigan hold primaries. the polls show mitt romney and rick santorum running neck and neck. a loss in the michigan primary would be an embarrassment for romney. he was born there and his father was governor. so far all the of the candidates expect ron paul have won at least one primary. the website wikileaks has begun releasing what it claims are five million e-mails from a texas based company that gathers intelligence on international affairs. today's leak focuses on a glossary of terms ridicule american government agencies. it calls the cia a joke and considers the fbi confused on anything more complicated than breaking up used car rings. wikileaks previously published hundreds of thousands of quaffed documents on the wars in iraq and afghanistan. today is the kick off of the rsa security conference.

costa county from pinole to richmond that traffic looks good. 4:51 let's go to steve. thank you, sal. good morning. cold morning out there. no record highs this week. that is for sure. little system just missed us by this much. right there. now take the turn. this is producing light showers. not a big deal. monterey, santa cruz, santa clara valley south. main focus to the north. 95% of the forecast area is colder. it has lot of cold air. colder showers to the south. breezy lows 30s and 40s. and then today will be a cool and breezy day. highs in the mid 50s. that is right. scattered showers possible. there is not enough moisture here. down toward santa cruz and south of gilroy down toward prune dale. if you're heading in that direction or watching, yes. the breeze is starting to pick up a little bit. some of the higher elevations.

goldseen restaurant. one man died at the hospital. there was a birthday party at the restaurant and a fight broke out. the fight spilled out into the parking lot. that's when shots were fired. no arrests have been made. more troubles for the lift lounge. police found six grams of cocaine just outside the lounge's entrance on friday night. police say someone stashed a container filled with six bags of cocaine in the lounge's parking lot. its street value estimated at $500. earlier this month the city ordered the lounge to end bar service an hour earlier. citing a high number of police calls. walnut creek police have arrested three southern california men accused of a major gift card scam. they called police saturday morning to report the men seen here on your screen. now they are accused of using

fraudulent credit cards to buy gift cards. police spotted the men in a van in the parking lot and arrested them. a search turned up more than $10,000 worth of gift cards and a credit card belonging to other people. we'll have more on that story. 4:54 is the time right now. for the first time in its 54 year history the daytona 500 is is scheduled far monday. yesterday nascar officials waited more than four rainy hours before deciding to reschedule the race for today. but more rain is forecast there. officials say they are prepared to wait all day and into tonight to avoid a tuesday race. if the race is not postponed again this morning, you will see the daytona 500 right here on ktvu channel 2. that will be on at 9:00 right after mornings on 2. at the 84th annual academy awards it was a silent film receiving the most cheers. >> and the oscar goes to the

artist. >> the artist won five oscars last night including best picture, best actor, and best director. it was the first silent film to win an academy awards since 80 years ago. meryl streep as best actress. christopher plumber as supporting actor. there was a touch of hollywood in san francisco last night. the academy of friends held its annual gala at the design center. money from ticket sales, raffles, and a silent auction helped benefit hiv, aids. it also helped raise awareness about the ongoing crisis. >> yes, we are getting better treatment, but that doesn't mean there is a cure yet. you have to constantly keep the information out there and the dollars research going to the research. >> this was the 32nd gala held by the academy of friends.
