weekend. sunny, clear, and cold like you told me. >> was there any snow? >> surprisingly more snow than you would think. >> good. they make it. >> they do. >> it is chilly outside. temperatures in the 20s and 30s for many and they continue to drop. there is a little rain toward monterey and snow up in the sierra. highs today only in the mid 50s. here is sal. steve, good morning. right now on 80 it looks good. no injure problems there. also the morning commute is moving along nicely in both directions on interstate 880. let's go back to the dave and pam. 6:01. we are physical still following breaking news coming in from across the country. this is coming in from ohio. look at ease live pictures. a lot is happening. a high school is on lockdown after several students were shot. these are live pictures. you see what we're seeing. this happened earlier this morning in cahdon.

this is right outside of cleveland. at least four students were injured together to earlier -- according to earlier reports. now we are hearing that number may be three. we learned the last five minutes a gunman is now in custody. a lot of ambulances are out there. a life light helicopter has responded to the school scene. again, school shoots in ohio has left several students injured. stay right here with ktvu morning news. we'll bring you any updates as we get them. we also have overnight news this morning. investigators say an extension cord set off an early morning apartment fire in oakland. that started at 3:30 this morning at a 16 unit building. one woman was treated for smoke inhalation. no one else was hurt. that fire left several families living in the billing out in the cold for 90 minutes. overnight fire in san jose destroyed a backyard shed and

caused concern for nearby businesses. it was behind a home on south seventh street at about 12:45 this morning. on the other side of the fence l are several businesses. firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading throw. no one was hurt. they say the homeowner stored scrap metal and furniture in that shed but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. your time now 6:02 only on 2. we have exclusive video showing loren herzog. the convicted killer accused of two dozen deaths. allie rasmus is examing the tapes right now and telling us what herzog told investigators. >> reporter: this exclusive interrogation video dates back to 1999 shortly after herzog and shermantine the so-called speed freak killers were arrested. detectives questioned herzog

for 19 hours over five days. shermantine was the ring leader in those crimes. he calls shermantine a cold- blooded killer and said his friend killed 24 people. one of their victims was 24- year-old cyndi vanderheiden. in this exchange we are about to hear herzog expresses remorse. >> vanderheiden was killed more than 20 years ago. it wasn't until earlier this month authorities found her remains in a remote area of calveras county. other human remains have been

unearthed san joaquin county. shermantine is on death row in san quentin right now. shermantine gave another interview. he said he knows where other victims are buried. also he says he's work on drawing more maps. pinpointing the locations of the burial sites. >> we will keep following this story for you throughout the morning. there is also more video of interrogation to examine. we'll bring you more details throughout the week. palo alto police are increasing patrols following a string of burglars. paul chambers joins us and tells us thieves are not just targeting homes but apartments as well. >> reporter: one of the apartment complexes right here on grant avenue.

three units all in the same floor were broken into. now if we can take a look at video here. investigators say the thief are targeting homes they believe are unoccupied. it's believed the burglars ring the doorbell. when no one answers they are going through unlocked side gates. now at the apartment complex key cards are needed to enter. investigators believe in those cases the thieves follow behind residence and then knock on doors to see if anyone is home before breaking in. the thieves got away with jewelry and electronics. since all eight began on friday at 7:30 in the morning and 4:00 p.m. they are look into the possibility these crimes are connected. >> i would think there are multiple crews working in town because the geographic differences would indicate it's not the same people. >> reporter: there was also an

unsuccessful burglar attempt at a home where a person tried to enter through a pet door. police are recommended you make sure all of your windows and doors are locked. also before opening just ask who is it? police say they will dedicate more police to the area. live in palo alto i'm paul chambers. also this morning lawyers in the domestic violence case of ross mirkarimi returned to court for a crucial hearing. the judge will decide if a jury will be able to see a 50 second video pointing out a large bruise on her arm. lopez told the neighbor her husband inflicted that injury during a fight on new years eve. the defense is fighting to exclue that visit owe for a file. the nations governor

inoculaing governor jerry brown meet with president obama at the white house. last night the president and the first lady michelle obama hosted this black tie dinner for the governors. the governors want to talk with the president about creating more jobs and improving their partnership with the federal government. also tomorrow in arizona and michigan voters cast their ballots in the presidential primary elections. coming up, why a win in michigan is very important for mitt romney's campaign. 6:08. we want to go back to sal to check in on the morning commute. how is it doing going? >> that was my queue huh? >> there you go. >> it's going well. we are starting off pretty well if you are driving on commute here on highway 4 westbound. it looks good if you are driving on westbound highway 4 all the way up to the willow pass grade. no major problems on 680 nearby

from the benicia bridge to the walnut creek interchange. if you are driving on north and southbound 880 the traffic is good. so far there is a little built of a crowd at the bay bridge toll plaza. there are no major problems on the south bay commute reported. we've been looking at it. northbound 101 off to a good start. by the way, southbound 101 at gilroy there is a crash on the shoulder. police are on the scene. 6:09 let's go to steve. >> thank you very much. a very good morning. just heads up there, it's cold. cold. bundle up layers. temperatures today will not be very warm. there is a little bit of rain down toward the hon tore ray -- monterey and peninsula. but mainly it's that cold air coming in on the backside of that system. kenwood 27. nevada at 28. ukiah 28. kentfield at 30.

temperatures continue to drop here. 30s for concord and fairfield. napa airport at 26 degrees. santa rosa looks like it could get a little breeze. oakland is now 39. san jose holding on to 40. our next system is offshore. we could see a few wrap around showers. some of that snow on the go up in the sierra nevada. tahoe has reported light snow. this system is really packing a lot of cold air. this mornings colder. colder out there. showers to the south. a little breezy. 20s and 30s and 40s. highs today in the mid 50s. not like last week when it was 70s to near 80. cool and breezy. scattered showers. if there is any available moisture we could get snow levels. highs yesterday 50s and 60nd. today they'll all be in the mid 50s. everyone else will be really close. one system moves south. we'll get a little bit of a break tonight and then the

boy look at this. time now 6:13. in afghanistan today a suicide car bomber killed at least nine people. it was a revenge attack on a military airport. the taliban claims responsibility. they say it was retaliation for the burning of quran's at a military base. no international troops were killed in today's attack. the president of afghanistan is urging calm, but as ktvu alison burns reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom the violence is showing the escalating depositions between the u.s. and afghanistan. alison. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton says the unrest has gotten out of hand. this is video of some of the latest protests as a begans

fill the streets. 39 people have been killed. at least six troops u.s. troops hurt in what has been a week of violence after the burning of several quran's at america cease largest base in afghanistan. the taliban is also claiming responsibility for trying to poison the food at a nato base with chlorine bleach. no one has reported getting sick. u.s. officials are furious. afghan officials are doing nothing to calm the violence. president obama was right to apologize about the quran burping and says it is troubling his republican rivals are being so critical of that. >> i find it somewhat troubling that our politics would inflame such a dangerous situation in afghanistan. >> reporter: and there is certainly growing distrust now between u.s. and afghan officials and there are several reports this morning that that could have a very big impact on u.s. withdraw plans from

afghanistan. that hinge on mutual cooperation. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. 6:15. syria says later today the results of the weekend vote of a new constitution will be announced. critics already call the election a sham. syrian people went to the polls yesterday voting on a new constitution that would establish a multiparty system in that country. the vote is seen as one way that embattled president ray hard is trying to calm opposition protestors. the critics boycotted the election. they say a new constitution isn't enough. they want assad to step down. happening now republican presidential candidate mitt romney is appearing at a rally in rockford. he spent a lot of time campaigning in michigan. it's his home state. both arizona and michigan hold their primaries tomorrow. the polls show that mitt romney and rick santorum are running

neck and neck but a loss in the michigan primary would be an embarrassment for romney. he was born there and his father was governor. so far all of the candidates expect ron paul have won at least one primary. rick santorum is expected to get secret service protection starting tomorrow. santorum requested the protection after a rowdy rally in washington state earlier this month. newt gingrich has also requested secret service protection and waiting to hear whether or not he will get it. mitt romney had secret service protection since february 1st. >> 6:17. police in east palo alto investigating a weekend shooting. the shot system zeroed in on the gunfire. officers laterred found a 22- year-old man in the driveway of a home. he had been shot several times but he is expected to survive. police are still looking for suspects this morning. still not clear what lead up to the gunfire.

some residence in east palo alto are worried about facebook's decision to go public. many facebook employees working a the the zoo, menlo park headquarters are certainly to make a big project. people living in network -- face many herrs and income families to move out of town. george lucas giving a thumbs down to his expansion plans. the creator of star wars wants to build a three story digital technology production center in lucas valley. although the complex wouldn't be seen from the road, some of the nearby residence tell the independent journal the plans are too big. the plans call for 51,000 square feet in film stages, a general store, and a gym. the account planning commission will consider this project later this morning. 6:18 is the time.

i think people are concerned about the traffic probably as more people head out there to work. small little road. >> absolutely. and sometimes you know developments are made or broken by traffic considerations. right now we are looking at all the counties. traffic is brett nor -- pretty normal as we head head up to the toll plaza. we mention marin i want to let you know between san rafael and golden gate bridge that traffic is easy. moving along and taking a look at oakland east bay, traffic beginning to wake up a bit. northbound on the right there that traffic is moderately heavy. we've been in good shape in san jose. we had a couple minor crashes. now we have a new crash northbound 85. we don't know much about it. 6:19 let's go to steve. thank you, it's cold out there. partly cloudy skies.

good morning. traffic on the bay bridge toll plaza now filling in those metering lights are on. we'll be watching to see what kind of day we have on this toll splay commute. san francisco police are asking for your help in the search for a hit and run driver responsible for a deadly crash. now police say a pickup truck ran a red light at the intersection of california and battery and slammed into a lincoln town car. the man driving that lincoln was killed. police say the other driver got out of the truck and ran away. our time now 6:25. this morning san francisco mayor ed lee makes a big pitch for the america's cup. there have already been test runs out on the bay. the mayor will tour improvements made at piers 30 and pay. he will also lead a round table

discussion on the benefits of hosting the international saling event. the america's cup world series starts this july. the final cup races are scheduled for september of next year. potential changes to san francisco's contract with the pga tour will be made public today. according to the san francisco chronical, the changes would bring the next high profile tour event to the city in 2016 in the form of a pga tour playoff at harding park. there is also a possibility the president's cup could return to harding in 2017 or 2021. revisions will be discussed at a recreation and parks committee later this week. the deal still has to be approved by the full reck and park commission. as well as the board of supervisors. harbor seal pupping season begins this week. park officials are asking visitors to be mindful. starting thursday, the area

we'll smile and say good morning, to you. thank you for joining us hire on ktvu morning news. it's a brand new day. it's monday, february 27th i'm dave clark be >> and i'm pam cook. time now is 6:30. >> we are starting with breaking news. we've been following this for the last 40 minutes. there has been a school shooting in ohio. several students have been hurt. this is a live picture of a helicopter flying over the scene. chardon, ohio. sheriff officials confirmed to us in the last ten minutes four students were injured but we don't know the extent of their injuries yet. now you're looking down you see police officers, people all over the place. officials also confirmed a gunman is now in custody. that school is on lock down. we understand the lock down is over now. students are being taken to yet another school to be reunited with their parents. now again the school shooting in ohio has left four students injured. this is breaking news. make sure you stay right here

with ktvu. we'll bring you any updates as we get them in. also new details coming out about the growing scandal involving nadia lockyer. ktvu tara moriarty is joining us live with more on this from newark. what do we know this morning? >> reporter: we do know it was an incident at this hotel here that landed bill lockyer's wife in the hospital and put her male friend under police scrutiny and now we are learning about a police sex tape. the tape of nadia lockyer and another man was given to her husband about six weeks before the newark hotel. the treasure believe the man that has alleged methamphetamine use might make that tape public if forced to break off his relationship with nadia. lockyer contacted alameda da for her help. he told her his wife was being stocked by the man he portrayed

as a former boyfriend. the investigation did not get firebases prosecutors felt that nadia and the man were encouraged in a consensual relationship. now we might not be hearing about all this expect february 3rd police were called to the home where they found nadya suffering from head and neck injuries. the man gave the story of self- defense saying he's not a stalker but nadia came after him she found out he was involved with other women. nadia has since checked into another rehab program herself. coming up, wee will tell you what bill lockyer asked the man's father to do for him recording this tape coming up. live in newark i'm tara moriarty. we're also following overnight news from oakland. investigators say an extension cord set off an early morning apartment fire in oakland. it started at about 3:30 this morning at a 16-unit building not far from interstate 580.

oakland firefighters were on the scene within minutes. >> due to their quick initial attack, we were able to contain it to the room of origin. started in the bedroom. due to smoke conditions we evacuated the entire building. everybody has been accounted for. >> one woman was treated for smoke inhalation. no one else was hurt. it did leave several families out in the building. a man fighting for his life after being shot in oakland. police rushed to a vacant lot at about 8:00 last night after shots were fired. when police arrived they found the man that had been shot. he was rushed to the hospital. his injuries are considered life threatening. so far no arrests have been made. folks in palo alto are on alert following eight residential burglar in just one day. ktvu paul chambers joins us from palo alto with the actions police are taking to respond to

this spike in crime. paul. >> reporter: police will dedicate more officers to the north side of town. that's where the crimes are happening. three of them happened at an apartment complex here on grand avenue. >> i have never been a security conscious in my life as i have been the last year. i hear little things about people having things stolen from their yard. bicycles and things. >> reporter: with this rash of crimes they are getting away with burglars. police say in all there were eight burglaries all that occurred on friday at 7:30 in the morning and 4:00 p.m.. police say the suspects are knocking or ringing the doorbell when no one answers they are prying doors open. key cards are needed to enter the complex on grant. investigators believe they are following behind residence and knocking on doors to see if anyone is home. in other cases the thieves simply enter through unlocked

[ laughter ] >> i'm glad to hear that. otherwise i would worry about you. >> i know. pam, i have known you for a long time. one of the things i do want to say, we have been watching it closely. remember last week we had the less than optimal week. and today it is a little crowded here at the toll plaza with no major problems. but you will see some slow traffic here as you get on to the bridge as well. i think the metering lights are functioning a little better than they were last week. if you leukon the left here, you don't see the huge crowd we had coming in from 880 as we did last week. let's move along and take a look at the east shore freeway. this traffic moves well. this is a look at the 880 freeway. i just realized i put my lineup in the wrong queue. let's go out and take a look

now at the commute. northbound 280 on highway 87. northbound 87 is moving along pretty well. getting up to downtown san jose. there are no major problems on 101 or 280. i don't think that came out exactly the way i -- >> sounded perfect. >> thank you. i just spent quality time with sal. we were laughing about things. we have a cold, cold day out there. compared to last week we had the record highs not this week it will be in the 50s. there is a little system that is moving through. it has produced -- it is producing snow. up in the citier nevada and reno. a couple reports sticking there. shower activity down toward monterey. moist of that is on the drier side. we are getting the colder air coming through. santa cruz over toward watsonville. but not much. the system is producing a lot of cold air.

good morning, to you. welcome back. here's a look at the top story. investigators say an extension cord started an early morning apartment house fire in oakland. it happened about 3:30 this morning at a 16 unit building not far from 580. one woman was treated for smoke inhalation. a school shooting this morning add a high school outside of cleveland has left four students injured. we don't know the extent of their injuries yet. officials have confirmed the lone gunman is in custody. it's believed to be another student. in afghanistan today nine afghans were killed today when a suicide car bomber crashed

into the gatesover a nato base airport. the taliban claims responsibility and says the attack is revenge for the burning of quran's at a u.s. military base. only on two we have more of the exclusive video showing interrogating convicted sore corral killer -- serial killer loren herzog. ktvu allie rasmus is looking over the tapes and joins us from the newsroom with some of the chilling details. >> reporter: this exclusive video dates back to 1999. that is when loren herzog and wesley shermantine were finally arrested. they were killed the speed freak killers because of their methamphetamine use. during questioning with detectives herzog detailed many of the killings they were involved in. herzog said that shermantine was the ring leader in those crimes and he herzog was just

along for the ride. in this interview with detectives, herzog discusses the murder of 25-year-old cyndi vanderheiden. he says it was shermantine that killed her and he stood by and didn't do anything. detectives ask herzog why he witnessed the killings but never told police about them. >> reporter: earlier this month authorities found vanderheiden's remains and remains other possible victims. these new leads in the search for victim are coming out now because wesley shermantine gave them a map where the victims are buried. shermantine said he didn't kill the victims herzog did. shore has been tine is onen death row in san quentin.
