steady rain here in healdsburg since about 10:00 and everybody we talked to seems pretty happy about it some people scamprd down the street trying to dust avoid the rain drops. >> i think it's about too to get a little moisture fill out those reservoirs you know. >> most of the area does not get its water from the melting snow pack. instead in marin and sonoma counties rely on rainfall. >> given the lack of rainfall we've had so far this winter every storm, everyone drop counts for us. >> reporter: lake sonoma is 80% of capacity, but smaller lake mendecino is only 55%. this is the dry winter in

ken pretty -- pritchett reporting. >> reporter: the wind shifts back and forth, how the wind is swirling back here. as for the driving conditions right now, interstate 808 is open but the chain controls are in effect from truckee to niack. the conditions up here frankly they are miserable but as we learned tonight we need every bit of snow that we can get. from the frustration of twisted chains, to dealing with harsh blowing wind it will be a long night for some sierra travelers. >> is this what you expected tonight? >> no i was hoping to get out a little earlier and make it over. >> reporter: truck driver mickey davis figures the snow will delay him two hours today. boreal is covered top to bottom with a good base but that's

because of extensive snow making and a lot of it. >> we've made record amounts of snow, we've made double what we've ever made before in snow making so we have a really strong snow pack. >> reporter: but the same can't be said for the sierra snow pack. >> in terms of percent of normal last year we were 170% of normal. this year we're 16% of normal? >> reporter: the upside is that storage stands 110% of normal because of a strong winter last year. >> it is pretty dismal. >> reporter: several times march has shaped out to be a the áf great snow month. remember that miracle.

ammunition was kept. two firefighters suffered minor injuries. the red cross is helping those people find she -- find shelter for the night. at mountain view, fire officials tell us 26 units are now considered uninhabitable. we also checked with the red cross and learned they're doesn'tly taking care of eight families for a total of -- they're currently taking care of eight families or a total of 15 people. investigators released surveillance video late today. they describeed the man as white, 20 to 30 years old, wearing a cap, black jacket and jeans. he went behind a reference camera and set some pamphlets on fire before leaving. anyone with information about the man is asked to contact san francisco police. also in san francisco, police announced three arrests

today in the ongoing case involving metal thefts and burglaries at the centers point shipyard. investigators say they spotted the boat at the bay. officers have now arrested 47- year-old michael england, alfonso muhammad and nalinle ignacio. in 14 minutes, thieves target a military cemetery. they steal thousands of dollars in plaques. and now to the republican primary race. only a few points separated romney and santorum all evening. in the end romney edged ahead.

red carpet tonight for the start of a major film festival. the film that excited audiences on this opening night. the legal battle in the domestic violence case against san francisco sheriff mirka -- mirkarimi. she is asking for that case to be -- his attorney tells us that his wife is asking for the case to be thrown out. in ohio, police tonight are saying the suspected gunnman in that high school shooting chose his victims at random. this as two more students died today. in the town of chardon this evening people gathered to mourn the three deaths. the family of one child who died remembered the teen as a young man who loved life. they say their only solice is he'll be able to help others

investigators say this is the con man, 62-year-old alfonso salazar behind the major rental scheme. >> i have no words for him. >> reporter: roberto leon moved his family into this house on altesa drive back in december after signing a rental agreement drafted by salazar. turns out salazar isn't the property owner or authorized realtor. something a family realized the day after they moved in. >> a real estate agent comes and he brings two cops over saying that he was getting ready to sell the house. what was i doing here. i told him well i had just rented the house. >> reporter: leon connected a d.a. who connected the dots. soon they began an investigation. >> reporter: salazar who's real estate license expired last year illegally claimed ownership of foreclosed and vacant houses such as this 70

bars. the plan calls less outreach for schools and communities. and right now we've got light showers showing up in the north bay. heavier rain north by heardsburg. big snow in the mountains. here's the richmond-san rafael bridge. it shows wind speeds sustained at 22 miles per hour. so they're coming across these bridges, you're going to see wind advisories on the bridges tonight and you will likely see them in the morning as well. so the wind are really starting to crank up. the strongest winds, heaviest rains moving in. here we are, 1:00 a.m. that's about in the north bay you really start to hear it coming down. the front is right on the golden gate bridge 1:00 a.m. about 4:00, 5:00 a.m. the morning show is going with steve and sal and they're talking about the heavy rain. they get a break in the north bay, but it'll be getting hammered in the south bay as

thousands of pounds of valuable bronze all stolen from hundreds of victims in the middle of night. in a story you will see only on 2, rob roth tells us why the people targeted didn't even report the crimes. when this woman came to cypress lawn cemetery today to visit the grave of her friend shanica wesley she says she can't believe what she saw. instead of a bronze vase in her friend's tombstone there was just a hole. >> i was blown away because this was horrible. >> reporter: she called shanica's family. >> this is where we come for peace and to see her. it's terrible somebody would do something like this. >> reporter: it isn't just shanica's vase that's missing look at this entire row. police say some 425 bronze vases have been stolen. police say the vases disappeared on two different

has gauged californians view on same-sex marriage. the new poll released to ktvu news finds that voter support is at an all time high. 50% of the voters say they approve to allow same-sex couples to get married and to apply regular marriage laws applied to those couples. 34% disapprove, 7% had no opinion. we found newly wednesday expressing their opinion. >> everybody has a right to love whoever they want to love. i don't think it matters what body a soul is living in. >> notably the poll suggests 51% of self-identified catholics in the state now support same-sex marriage. even though the catholic church high hiarchy maintains marriage is between a man and a

spain. those arrested admitted to taking part in several political attacks. at the pentagon today there was a startling admission about what happened to the remains of some 9/11 victims. former general john abized says his investigation found partial remains that couldn't be identified were incinerated and sent to a landfill. the reu mains came from the pentagon and shanksville -- the remains came from pentagon and shanksville, pennsylvania. it's not clear how many victims this involved. the environmental protection agency fined western digital $55,000 for failing to handled waste properly. epa inspectors say workers were not properly trained. officials say they are working

recover him. today they finally announced an arrest in the case. donald wilson of santa clara is in jail accused of killing michael barbado in 1982. wilson regularly bought cocaine from the victim. persistence and new technology helped lead to an arrest. in news of the world tonight in syria, rebel helped smuggle rebels from homs. 13 syrians were killed, it's not clear what happened to a french reporter who needed surgery for a fractured leg. in china explosions at a plant killed at least 16 people. dozens of others are missing. shock waves injured farmers in a near by field and blew out

windows. and in the indian ocean, rescuers dropped supplies to a ship. a fire left the ship without any power. the 1,000 people on board are being forced to deal with high heat, humidity and no electricity. some members of the u.s. senate are calling for a new study of tsa body scanners now in use at u.s. airports. senator susan collins of maine is calling into question a government report that says the amount of radiation emitted by scanners is members -- is members -- is negligable and dangerous for práeg -- pregnant women. high tension power lines, trees, and an angry community

a pg & e plan to cut down thousands of tree social security creating trouble. >> reporter: thousands of marked trees between nevado and the geyser in a high voltage right of way. pg & e says the trees are a hazard. >> we could be fined up to a million dollars a day as well as it could cause a cascading outage to millions of

customers. >> reporter: some say pg & e is going too far. >> clear cut through god only knows how many california live oaks. >> reporter: this century old oak says can't possibly grow another 40 feet to the power lines. a group called save our sonoma trees is organizing a protest. showing clear cutting erosion. >> if pg & e is going to take responsibility for removing those trees then they also need to bear the burden of irrigating the errosion that occurs. >> we're going to still leave bushes which should keep the soil. >> reporter: pg & e says crews have yet to begin any of the work but they say they need to

finish cutting the trees by the beginning of fire season. in contra costa county the mount diablo school board has approved preliminary lay offs for 89 teachers. however 72 educators have already said they plan to leave clayton valley high school voluntarily at the end of the school year when it converts to a charter school. more jobs could be saved if the district manages to hold on to $1.6 million in special funding from the state department of education. in san francisco today, supervisor scott weaner came out against proposed legislation that would ban food trucks from operating within 1,500 feet of both public and private schools. weaner said the proposed measure would keep food trucks out of the majority of the city. currently a san francisco ordnance bans the trucks from operating within 1,500 feet of public middle and high schools. winier says he wants to see that cut down to 500 feet. it's been almost a year

and obviously showing snow, at lower elevations in the foothills and also showing now up in lake county. a winter storm warning in effect. snow levels down about 2,000 feet. you have low snow levels, you have rain moving in, and you have these winds. i'll come in a little closer. winds are gusting to 26-miles- an-hour. the sustained at 22. over on the bay bridge, winds are gusting to 26. that means tomorrow morning's commute is going to be a little dicey as far as the wind. the winds are definitely becoming a factor. i think they're a little stronger than original forecast. it's got cold air from the north, mid-latitude warmer air and moisture. these two look what they're doing. they are just coming over the top of us. and they're merging together, they're sincing in. by tomorrow we get .25 to 1- 1/2. there's more scattered showers

throughout the day tomorrow. but the heaviest rain is overnight tonight into the very early morning hours. so here we are, 2:00 a.m., there's the front you can clearly see it. then there we are 4:00 a.m. they'll be in here tracking this. basically right over the station. the winds will be going. the commute will be nasty for you early morning commuters. by 6:00 a.m. it's heading into the south bay. san jose commute, 6:30 to 7:00 a.m. is not going to be a pleasant one. the winds will still be around. they'll still be at that front with the winds gusting at the don barton bridge. by 7:00 a.m. things start to clear out. before that it's just widely scattered showers and snow on bay area peaks. as we get into thursday another rain system comes through and brings chances for sprinkles as well. while all this is going on here. the mountains are getting snow. if you're driving to the mountains the next 36 to 48 hours i would definitely check things out before you go. because they will be chaining
