we're live in san jose where we just spoke to a man that describes how he made it out of his burning house alive and how he helped his neighbors next door. in a year where we haven't had too many good fronts go through. this one is pretty good but it's moving fast. how much rain can we expect? so many crashes and now there is a fatal one on the peninsula. we'll explain what happened. plus it was a primary sweep for mitt romney. what this means for the republican race heading into super tuesday. ktvu channel 2 morning news continues. good morning. welcome to a brand new day. wednesday, february 29th leap day i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook.

we begin with storm watch this morning. it did get quite a bit of rain overnight. there is steve paulson. a little dark oaf there for you a moment there. >> i'm here though. the system is moving through really fast. we had pretty good gusts over 45-55. snow is definitely on the go. for us this system is moving through really quick. there is the heaviest rain. went over the san mateo bridge heading toward the dumbarton. south toward san jose. and we'll come back out here a little wider and show you what is going on. the stretch is back over the peninsula and down toward the south bay. to the north bay what are we seeing? trying to see a break. this system will move through fast and see showers and cooler temperatures today. here is sal. we are looking at interstate 880 here and there have been several crashes in the east bay. one nearby. northbound 880. they are clearing an injury

crash there where a car span out and in the two left lanes for a bit. the traffic is going to be a little bit slow in the area there. also the morning commute has been effected by wet weather on all the bridges. and windy conditions on all the bridges. there is a fatal accident reported on san mateo near 101. it's not on the freeway. it's near the freeway. it may effect people as the coroner has been called to the scene. all this and more as we continue with expanded traffic and weather for the stormy morning. it's 6:02 let's go back to dave and pam. we begin our 6:00 hour with developing news. crews in san jose are still on the scene of an early morning fire. it started shortly before 3:00 a.m. at a duplex on denise way. that is where tara moriarty is. >> reporter: we just spoke to him. he described how he made it out of the burning building alive. he's actually sitting in a truck with his mother as they are talking to firefighters.

he told us how his mother woke up because she heard crackling noises. the entire roof was engulfed by the time crews arrived. after he got out of the house with his mom, they ran to the other half of the duplex to make sure their neighbors also got out. >> my mom, she woke up to hearing the cracking of the fire and so she came in and woke me up. >> you went next door to wake them up. >> yeah. we knew that they are our neighbors and we are in a duplex so we share the same building. >> reporter: high winds in excess of 20 miles an hour posed a great challenge for crews. about 45 firefighters tackled the blaze and had to set up an extension thousands of feet downwind. now it took 40 minutes for cruise to get the up -- crews to get the upper hand on the fire.

fire investigator is on scene here. he will try to determine what started this fire. live from san jose i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. your time now 6:03. firefighters in napa closely watching to make sure a house fire there doesn't flair up again. the home is at the 3,000 block of redwood drive just outside the city limits. now the flames look at them. they broke out about 9:00 last night. while the two homeowners and their dogs escaped without any injury, this fire damaged the top floor of the two-story home. a coup -- the couple owns an antique shop in town but they kept a collection of books and antiques in their home. they were not able to safe anything. still no word yet on the cause of the fire. pg&e wants its customers to pay most of the cost for improving the gas pipeline network. the upgrades are in the wake of the san bruno pipeline

disaster. company executives say it could cost up to $5 billion. but they want customers to pay for newly adopted rules critics say pg&e failed to maintain its system and shareholders should pay for all of it. state regulators will have the final say. republican presidential candidate mitt romney heads into next weeks big contest with momentum. romney bare leaninged out rick cantor are rum in michigan. he won with 41%. santorum had 38%. ron paul came in with 12% annuities gingrich with 7%. in arizona romney won by a wide margin. romney has 47%. rick santorum 26%. for coming up at 6:15 we'll have a live report from our

washington, d.c. newsroom with why newt gingrich says he has a shot at the gop nomination. contra costa county leaders approved a new day-time curfew. it's part of a crack down for students that skip school. crockett is one of the incorporated areas covered by this cure few -- curfew. on an coverage day 50% of absences are unexcused students caught skipping class repeatedly could be fined up to $500. >> if you can increase graduation rates, you will decrease the amount of kids that will end up being penal institutions. there is a big correlation between graduation from high school, school attendance and crimes. >> they released fines for a

day-time -- the day-time curfew will take effect in about 30 days. national parks are approving profitable for marin county communities. that is according to a newly released study. in 2010 people spent more than $400 million in the region by -- the bulk of the spending went to lodging own food followed by shopping and entertainment. >> contra costa county the mt. diablo school board approved layoffs for 89 teachers. but teachers say they plan to leave voluntarily. most of them are expected to return after it becomes a charter school. district says charters could be saved if they don't lose special funding from the state. let's go to sal. it's no fun driving this morning. a lot of crashes. >> i was just looking up at my.

the map here. and as accidents and crashes happen, it lights up. and it keeps lighting up more and more. let's take a look at the live pictures. highway 24 you can see highway 24 traffic is going to be getting heavier now as you drive up to the caldecott tunnel. no major problems but it is going to be slow driving. you should be very careful as you drive through this area. let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. it is getting a little bit more just a little bit more crowded here. i want to put up this map. you look at the whole bay area map. look at all those incidents. it's it will up like a christmas tree. we have a couple of major crashes. one is on the hillsdale area. the chp has called for the coroner. southbound 101 at broadway they are clearing up a crash. look at oakland. look at all the indicators. those are all funder benders -- fender benders for those those that have lost control.

there is a bunch of them on 880 near 23rd. please be careful. give yourself extra time this morning. let's go to steve. lots of standing water, sal. we haven't had rain of any significance for is a long time so we have a lot of leaves. i just heard from ron, clear skies. so within another hour or two i think we will be done with this. we will see upstream systems coming in. this is a cold front moving in pretty fast. you can see on the north of that it's starting to wind down. the line stretches from the east bay back over toward the dumbarton bridge. back war the peninsula. right about palo alto and mountain view. heading down toward santa cruz mountains. and then right back over toward fremont and newark. that looks to be the heaviest. san helena picked

inch plus. but farther south amounts tailed off pretty fast. kentfield a half inch rain. san francisco just updated our observer. .37. .37. so not bad. it seems to be a lot of its humph has its moves south. by 9:00 it's gone. it will move through fast. upstream here comes more showery in nature. by noon things will juice up. by tonight another system slices through fast. we can get brief heavy rain. that will be more showery in nature. there is still one more that has to come in thursday morning. right there. and then by friday things will calm down considerably. 40s on the temps or 50s with clearing taking place. i expect we will see sun by 9:00 for everybody. that system moves through. snow continues to really wrap up in the sierra, nevada. winter tomorrow mornings our rain and wind will turn to

blustery conditions. if there is any snow, it will be a slow snow level for us. 6-24 inches above lake level. two feet below that. anywhere from six inches to a foot and a half. showers breezy. afternoon highs in the mid 50s. another day gets stuck in the 50s. after thursday temperatures rebound. we'll see warmer weather by the weekend. pam and dave. >> thank you. our time is 6:11. we are talking about the weather this morning. particularly what is happening in the city of oakland. claudine wong is out there right now. i almost spun out myself earlier. what is it like out there right now? >> reporter: it's a mess out here. the rain has stopped but the problems keep stacking up. we're along the 880. you can see this vehicle that was a solo spin out the vehicle by itself when she spun out. the driver walking away with firefighters right now. not a major crash but one of many like it. we we are seeing in and around

this area in oakland. they will get ready to tow that out of here and try to get the roadway back open but the traffic is backed up for miles. it is a mess out here. and again, this isn't the only problem. on our way here we saw two separate accidents. a volkswagen beetle that got rear ended by a big rig. and off the fruitvale exit we had to stop because we saw a gentleman that crashed into the side of the road there. broke his axel he hit it so hard. we called 911 to stop to make sure he was okay. as sal said earlier the problems are stacking up this morning. even though the rain is letting up, the roadways are wet. people are having big problems and it could take you a lot longer to get to work today. keep that in mind if you are heading out. they are clearing these up very quickly. it's still taking awhile. live here in oakland claudine

happening right now tornado watches are being issued from kentucky to missouri where powerful storms killed a woman overnight. a storm chaser captured this video. take a look at this. dramatic video of a funnel cloud. about 50 miles west of worship that, kansas -- of wichita kansas. another tornado trapped people inside their homes and damaged some of the famous theaters there. time is 6:16. mitt romney is setting his sights on ohio today after winning last night in michigan and arizona in the primaries. ktvu alison burns in our washington, d.c. newsroom with a look at the big contest just ahead in the next week. alison. >> reporter: dave, mitt romney is way ahead in the delegate contest but he is beginning to meet next week on super tuesday to keep the momentum going.

one political analyst called michigan romney's near death experience. but he eked out a victory last night over rick santorum and claims he has the momentum to win the nomination. his rivals are not giving up. newt gingrich has been targeting the super tuesday safe looking for an upset. here's how he explained it during a campaign stop. >> we decided not to compete in michigan because we thought it would be important to focus here in tennessee, idaho, and ohio and the states that will be on super tuesday. >> reporter: we'll take a look at where ron paul will do pretty well in my next update in about an hour. for now we are live in washington, d.c. alison burns. the san francisco police department is the target of an excessive force lawsuit. 44-year-old erik russell claims an officer in the city's richmond district fractured his neck after his arrest of public intoxication. his lawsuit seeks $4 million. so far there has been no public

response from the san francisco police department but the police report indicates the officer was defending himself after russell began kicking him. federal prosecutors have revealed new information about their investigation into two former richmond police officers. danny harris and another officer ray thomas tried to frame their immediate supervisor by having the lieutenant lured into an extramarital affair. the two officers were angered by an investigation into their private security company they were running on the side. yahoo is demanding that facebook license technology it uses that belongs to yahoo or it will be sued. yahoo ultimatum apparently surprised facebook which it says has not had the chance to evaluate the claims. the patent issue could shed spotlight on facebook

vulnerability. 6:18 is the time. back over to sal. pretty busy. keeling an eye on the roads this morning. >> that is right. we do have a look at interstate 880 we just saw claudine standing on the side of the road where there was a crash. that is southbound 880 heading down from oakland to the airport. not all that bad. i want to show you another look at 880 that would be northbound. this shot from the oracle arena area. now you saw that claudine was in front of an accident where there were no serious injuries but a couple of lanes were blocked. look how slow the traffic is. it's very slow. people will be on 580. i want to show you this is the area they were talking about. people will be using 580 instead. if you're a 580 commuter i think you should give yourself extra time. every commuter should try and

allow for extra time for this wet and rainy commute. we also mentioned we have someone that just tweeted me here on my twitter account there is a car flipped over on loan tree by eastbound 4. traffic westbound is backed up to hill crest. at the bay bridge toll plaza, that is looking at the backup here that is about a 15-20 minute delay before you make it on the bridge. at 6:20 let's go to steve. all right thank you very much, sal. our system is roaring right on through. the good news it's not sticking around very long. it is producing bursts of moderate to heavy rain. most of that from fremont to palo alto. it's clear parts of the north bay. snow continues to really stack up here in the sierra which is good. we'll have more of that coming up in a second. the system moving through now right about from fremont milpitas toward san jose cupertino, mountain view, that seems to be the burst of the

heaviest right now. today morning rain most of it is moving so fast. i mean by 7:00, 7:30 we'll have partly sunny skies. morning rain and wind turns to showers. partly sunny and breezy cool. 40s on the temps. temperatures might come down a little bit because there is mostly clear skies. coming down of the northwest. that will move in late morning or early afternoon. even if we get a few breaks here i don't think they will last very long. highs only in the 50s. the good news is we do see the front moving through fast. we still have rain holding on until about thursday. we'll clear it out friday and into the weekend. well, a winter storm warning is out until 10:00 tonight. snow is blasting through the psi era -- sierra, nevada. and the last time we saw you you were sitting up there with no snow and it was warm.

>> reporter: be careful what you wish for. we are on don never -- donner summit. look at the big rig making its way up to the top. crawling. you see our forecasted several feet of snow. the snow ratio so high. the rain is turning into very deep snow up here. and you can see i will give you an idea how light it is. you throw it up in the wind. light and dry. almost turning to smoke as it blows off in the distance there. that is the problem for drivers. we've seen significant wind. that is blowing the snow across the freeway. this is what it looked like as we drove up. some of those exposed areas the wind just howling through there sideways. blue canyon blowing through there sideways.

cal tran has been out here doing their part to try to keep the roads scraped down to the asphalt. no sooner do they pass through the wind and snow covers the roadway back up. even under these crazy conditions they've been able to keep this roadway open thus far. i tell you as we look around, we obviously need this snow. the ski resorts need this snow. who would think it would take until the end of february to get the conditions up here. i think my right eyelash is frozen. >> real quick snow level you've heard before? >> reporter: it was starting to switch around apple gate. that is right at 2,000 feet. and we are hering reports around grass valley. they have canceled schools in the school district there. >> thank you very much. brian is up there at donner summit again. where we are getting much needed snow. >> that is good news. 6:23. why target stores are removing

good morning. right now traffic is moving along very slowly on interstate 880 heading north because of several crashes in this bad weather. and you can see the area i've circled here there have been several fender benders. that's why it's so slow. 580 people will be using that instead. prepare for a slow commute in oakland. 6:26. target is pulling a greeting card from its store shelves after the death of whitney houston. the card in question says and i'm quoting next time you think of dating the bad boy, consider whitney houston. target is telling tmz the cards were out before whitney houston died, but since then the company has started removing them from the stores. whitney houston as you know was found dead at the beverly hilton hotel on february 11th. marin county man is on the verge of being in the book

guinness book of world records. he didn't throw it. he called in an expert for that job. former cal quarterback joe spent it flairing. here they are celebrating. if the record is certified it breaks the old one by more than 19 feet. as we have been talking about, it's a challenging day for bay area drivers this morning. big winter storm has arrived bringing in rain and wind. we're keeping an eye on the roads and tracking how long the rain will last. fire crews are still on the scene here in napa trying to salvage what they can after antiques were lost in a fire. @

there is earningsing in. economic news gdp better than forecast for the last part of year. we'll have all the business news in just a moment. we'll say good morning. thank you for joining us here on ktvu channel 2 morning news. it's wednesday, february 29th i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. we are on storm watch this morning because big storm hitting the bay area right now. packing strong winds as well. >> yeah. we do have live team coverage for you. we have claudine wong live in oakland out there checking for the trouble spots. sal, of course is watching everything as well. let's go to steve, first. he's been telling us all morning. this is moving fast. >> it's a quick mover dave and pam. we've had decent breaks but there is more up toward the north. there is another one coming upstream. we're not done yet. we'll get another break in the late morning and early afternoon. the front is stretching from livermore back over to fremont and mountain view. north of that is scattered

showers. i'll get this out of the way so you can put it into motion. behind that system there is breaks in the clouds. there will be bursts from moderate to heavy rain. now we had pretty wild conditions on the bay bridge and many of the bridges earlier. let's take you now to claudine wong. things look like they have calmed down there now. >> that is right. we're on the bay bridge earlier. the wind was really blowing. the problems continue. take a look behind me. we're at the fruitvale off ramp. look at the front wheel of this volkswagen. you can see it is a mess. i will show you to the left. this vehicle came off of the 880. it belongs to chris who is still out here. can you tell me what happened? >> yeah, i was coming down the off ramp. >> reporter: it was raining pretty hard. >> it was completely dark and it was raining. i could barely see. and i hit i don't know what i hit. it was a major bump obviously and then yeah my car spun out

of control and i'm lucky that it wasn't worse than it was. >> reporter: your phone was dead. you couldn't call for help. we called 911. you have been waiting out here for hours? >> hours. there hasn't been a cop to be seen. my phone i mean give it to luck it never died. it happened to die at this point in time. i haven't been able to call a tow truck and yeah. no one has been able to help. and to be honest my backup plan is wait until the auto zone opens up and walk over there. >> reporter: we have called in. hopefully help is cop soon. maybe one of the reasons no one is here yet it has been busy. we'll take a look at a few accidents we've been out at this morning. one near the paul exit. there was an overturned vehicle flipped over. that person was okay. and then in oakland, just across way from where we are standing, there was a spin out

there. that caused a back up along 880. a mess out there. we saw another accident on our way to that accident. so just keep that in mind if you are heading out. even though the rain is lightning up the problem -- lighting up the problems are stacking up. early morning fire caused major damage to a duplex in san jose. it started about 3:00 a.m.. strong wind conditions caused tough conditions for fight fears. the two families living there did get out staffly. tara moriarty is talking to investigators and victims this morning. she'll have a live update at 6:45. fire crews also on the scene of a late night fire. flames started in the attic of a home in wedwood -- redwood drive. paul is there. >> reporter: crews are actually trying to salvage as many antiques as they can as well as monitor the hot spots.

if we can take a look at the video here. the call came in just before 11:30 last night. once on scene crews reported seeing flames coming from the second story of the home. it took eight engines and 48 firefighters to get things under control. the owner said she was alerted of the fire because of alarms inside the house. the home is located up a windy private driveway in an area of six other homes. but the fire crews had to go through a gate and up another hill. they used a half mile of hose to put out the fire. >> the fire was an attic fire. they di have a fireplace going at the time of the incident. as far as the investigation f is still ongoing. >> reporter: published reports states the homeowner runs a

napa valley antique store and it will be closed as she deals with the cleanup. there is about $300,000 in damages. we did also find out the homeowner is at one of the nearby homes. we will try to contact her if we can. cal fire may bill a landowner who accidentally started a large grass fire in napa county last week. that fire burned 200-acre in the soda canyon area. it was started by someone trying to clear land for a vineyard. cal fire is still tallying the cost of the fire but 200 firefighters and firefighters helped put it out. >> three people were captured after a high speed chase. they robbed this shell gas station around 10:00 last night. off duty police officer spotted them and followed their car to highway 24. that is where the chp took over. our ktvu roof camera tracked the pursuit as it happened.

it stretched to highway 880 in oakland. the speeds topped more than 100 miles an hour. two men and a woman were taken into custody. suspected serial killer joseph naso is due back in a marin county courtroom this morning. he is entered -- will enter a plea. he is charged with killing four northern california women. earlier this month a judge ruled that naso is competent and that ruling cleared the way for naso to act as his own attorney. lawyers in mirkarimis case will head back to a courtroom at 9:00 this morning. the attorney for his wife said she will ask the judge to toss out the entire case. the district attorneys -- to release pictures of her with a on her arm violates her privacy.

6:37. the city ofstock ton -- the city of stockton moving ahead with mediation. last night in a 6-1 vote the city council approved a mediation plan. the city will have 60 days to renegotiate with their creditors. if a deal can't be worked out the city will file for bankruptcy. if that happens, the stockton will become the largest city in america to file for bankruptcy. 6:38. want to go back to sal for a look at traffic this morning. i know you had crashes earlier. what is going on now? >> with have new one pam and dave. east 580 let's go right to the maps. all lanes reported closed for an injury crash. chp just has too many cars piled up there on the way to castro valley. eastbound 580 to 164th right before the castro valley y the traffic will be slowing down

there pretty soon as the emergency vehicles start to show up on this multicar crash on eastbound 580. let's go outside. i want to show you 237. we have stop and go traffic. there is no major problems once you pass zanker road. and we've been looking at the overnight crashes. chp says overnight rain played that role on the six-car pileup on highway 24. one person suffered moderate injuries. investigators say a speeding driver was going to fast on the highway. that set off a chain reaction crash. it's not clear if anyone else was cited but you can be critted. thank you. we have a pretty strong system for this year.

it is moving through rapidly. there is still some upstream. i will show you what is developing off the eureka. this is the main coil. that is moving through now. the heaviest rain i focused on that. heading toward campbell. cupertino and mountain view. that looks to be the burst of the heaviest. it stretches from liver mother back over toward the santa cruise mountains. part of the north bay will get a break. we will see increasing clouds. more rain will turn to -- possibility of thundershowers. great that .1.53. there was numerous reports of a half inch. so not bad. still holding together. it's moving rapidly out of the

area. this is the cloud rain forecast. watch whats here by 9:00. watch how the next system comes in later on. not a big one. it will keep showers and off and on rain going into the forecast. overnight into thursday morning. 40s on the temps. 40s are very, very low. wind gusts at 45-50 miles an hour. we will not see that. there could be bursts 35-40. right there. that's what i'm focusing on. what is going through now is moving through fast. showers breezy. cool temps. possible thundershowers. and snow winter storm warning goes until 10:00. snow level around 2,000, 2500 feet. our observer steve bridges is at the key. 5-6 inches there. hard to tell. the wind is blowing so much. 50s on the temps. things are really rock and rolling. they will calm down a little bit and pick up into thursday morning and get a break as we go into the weekend. pam and dave.

good morning, to you. welcome back. here's a look at the top stories we'll following for you right now. this morning republican presidential candidate mitt romney celebrating primary victories in both michigan and arizona. romney easily won in arizona but in michigan where he grew up he only finished three points ahead of rick santorum. we have a stormy morning around the bay area right now. wet, windy, conditions and it's dangerous driving in some areas. chp has issued wind advisories for the san mateo and bay bridges. rare antiques may have been destroyed in this massive house fire outside of napa. the flames started in the attic just before 9:30 last night. while the couple living there was not harmed, they reportedly kept valuable antiques in their

home and many of them may not have been saved. overnight news investigation is under way into an early morning fire in san jose. it started shortly before 3:00 a.m. on denise way and ktvu tara moriarty is talking to investigators and some of the fire victims. >> reporter: still no official cause to the fire although we are told it started in the add tick above the garage area. if you take a look behind me here, you can see the mother is actually standing out speaking with one of the fire captains there as she and her son are sort of sifting through the remains of the building there. her son actually described how his mother woke up because she heard crackling noises and the two escaped from the burning building. you can see how extensive the damage is. flames ripped through the attic. the entire roof was engulfed by the time crews arrived. after they got out of the house safely, they ran to the other

half of the duplex to make sure their two neighbors got out. do you consider yourself lucky? >> yeah. almost close to tears thinking how lucky we are. >> reporter: high winds in excess of 20 miles an hour posed a challenge for crews. about 45 firefighters tackled the blaze and had to set up an extension 1,000 feet downwind. it took 40 minutes for the cruise to get the upper hand. firefighters will be leaving within the next couple of hours. no word yet on a damage estimate. we still have to find out the official cause of the fire. live from san jose i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. your time is 6:47. now we are hearing the actual 911 calls were made during that shooting rampage at a high school in ohio. >> this is chardon high school

all right welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. live look at the big board. dow jones up 34 points. started the day at 13,000. a lot will depend on what the fed says today. 6:55. dover air force base in delaware is being criticized again. new pentagon report says the mortuary cremated the remains of 9/11 victims and disposed of the ashes in a landfill. they had been criticized of losing body parking lots of two american soldiers in 2009. budget problems forcing walnut creek police to juggle their resources. they will be assigning new officers to the downtown area. however, the police union is worried that will reduce the number of officers available for traffic enforcement and school outrich. the police department is hoping to add officers in the new city bucket.
