"mornings on 2" starts now. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2". i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. we're on storm watch. it's been wet in the bay area and that's wreaking havoc on the commute. we have live team coverage. claudine wong is czeching out traffic -- checking out travel spots. but first we start with steve. >> yes, finally a decent system moving through. it's moving rapidly. not before we had wind at 45 miles an hour. we had moderate rain. the system is almost through. come out a little bit. you can see this storm stretches from the east of milpitas back to san jose, willow glen and then right back
7:02 am
to the peninsula. well, now through mountain view and cupertino. it's done there. come out farther and you will see the heaviest rain is right there. areas that will continue to see rain there. it's stretching from a little bit around hayward and back towards parts of the peninsula. half moon bay, and to the north of that things have come down. we're getting a break. we're not done quite yet. there's another system that has to come in. for more on the bridges and the roads, claudine wong has been out there all morning long. claudine, things look like they've calmed down considerably. >> reporter: take a look at 880. take a look at the cars. you can see a lot of them. windshield wipers still on. it's still drizzling a little bit. i want to show you the accident scene we just left in oakland. a vehicle coming off of the
7:03 am
fruitvale offramp smashed into the side. the chp just arrived on the scene when we got there. that man said he was sitting out hear for hours and he tells us -- out here for hours and he tells us what happened. >> i was coming off the -- off the ramp. it was raining. i hit -- i don't even know what i hit. my car spun out of control and i'm lucky it wasn't worse than it was. >> reporter: that happened just across the freeway from an accident on the freeway where a vehicle spun out. firefighters were on scene helping the driver. she was okay. but certainly caused a backup. also causing a backup was in san francisco earlier this morning. this was 101 just north of the paul exit. it's cleared up now. but that exit caused a big traffic backup as one vehicle
7:04 am
flipped over onto its roof and firefighters responded to that scene. coming back out here live to the 880 in san leandro. traffic moving well through here but we've been all over the bay area this morning. it looks like this and then all it takes is one accident and everything just shuts down and closed down. this is the situation this morning where the rain is really letting up. the wind is letting up. but there are still wet roads and still a lot of problems to be aware of. sal castanedo, watching all of that, including an incident in castro valley. how does it look now? >> reporter: it looks pretty good. the crash has cleared to the shoulder. the traffic is recovering for a while. all of the lanes were blocked. also looking at 880, that's improved. earlier you were at a crash, claudine, where there were several lanes blocked. they cleared that up and now traffic has recovered. it looks like the rain has stopped.
7:05 am
just as steve mentioned, the rain system has moved through. he was right on the money. he said after about 7:00 it would get beater. that's really helped the morning commute. when it's raining somewhere, it does tend to cause more crashes. there's still plenty of standing water on the san mateo bridge. we'll have another traffic update in a few minutes. back to the desk. 7:04. a late-night fire outside of napa destroyed a home. this happened on redwood drive. the flames started in the attic. ktvu's paul chambers is there and paul, you are telling us about the store that went up in flames, the valuables in the store. >> reporter: that's true. firefighters say they actually were worried about this area because of all of the trees especially since the recent soto fire. they say it could have been a lot worse because of the wind.
7:06 am
the trees were dampened. and that he helped -- and that helped. once on the scene, crews reported flames coming from the 3400-square foot home. the home is located up and to get to the fire, crews had to go through the gate and another home to get to the house. they used the hose to get to the fire and although the actual cause of the fire is still under investigation, they believe the source may have been the homeowner who said that she was having a -- excuse me. she had a fire going inside her home. crews say they are doing their best to get things safe. >> any time we have a fire on the second floor, we're always concerned about salvage. so we do have a lot of salvage, and conservation is always a
7:07 am
primary concern for us. >> reporter: now, published reports say the homeowner runs a napa valley antique store. we did see her go up to her home. so hopefully we can get an opportunity to talk with her. we'll keep you posted as things develop. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, paul. we want to check back in with sal. he's been busy with all of the accidents. >> yeah, there have been a few. first of all, let's go outside. we're going to the maps first, pardon me. look at antioch. a couple of serious crashes in the eastbound direction on highway. give yourself plenty of time. the crash, highway 4 eastbound before "a" street at the shoulder there, but traffic is still going to be a little bit slow. but it's improved. some slow traffic on 80 but that's improved. as we look at 880 heading
7:08 am
south, it looks kind of typical. some slow traffic through hayward, union city. 101 has had a lot of fender- benders. it's improving. 280 is actually in good shape. let's go to the 880 freeway. i told you it improved. traffic is moving well. now we look at the bay bridge. the gusty winds have died down a little bit. let's go to steve. the system is moving very, very fast. the system is actually losing a lot of punch but not before it left about .25 to over 1 inch of rain. so finally a system that did something. it's mainly over the south bay. ben lomond has picked up 1 inch. there have been 1-inch amounts towards mendocino and wake county. we're not done. that developing system will be in the late morning, early afternoon, to keep it going. what's left is really falling
7:09 am
apart. that's right by the radar beam. there's some on san mateo coast. a little bit on the peninsula. we're turning more showery in nature, right by skyline, redwood city and oakland and hayward. so today, first the front and then we get the cool, unstable air coming in behind that. so the morning rain and wind will turn more showery. breezy and cool. temperatures continuing to drop to the north bay. they had some clearing for a while. 40s and 50s on the temperatures. one system moving through. snow is really cranking up in the sierra nevada. in fact, winter storm warnings go until 10:00. there will be another system coming in to deep the beat going until thursday. friday and the weekend -- to keep the beat going until thursday. friday and the weekend looks good.
7:10 am
the heaviest rain has been through the morning. it will pick up later on as we see the system move its way in. all schools are canceled up in tahoe. now 6 to 12 up around lake level. so a very good system for not only us but in the sierra nevada. rain will turn showery, breezy, mostly cloudy. possibility of thunderstorms. if we can get a little bit of sun, a little bit of heating, temperatures will be in the in the 50s -- in the 50s. it's all gone on friday. mostly sunny and warmer as we head into the weekend. dave. >> thank you, steve. our rainy weather storm means there's snow in the sierra. right now, chains are required for interstate 80 and highway 50 and the ski resorts are loving all of this new snow. coming up at 7:47, we'll take you live to donner summit we'll see how much snow they already have and how much more is
