here and many plan to take part in a protest that capital on monday. live at university of california santa cruz, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. today's rain and drizzle didn't dampen spirit at university of california at berkeley for their day of action protest. >> at university of california at berkeley some students said they felt the rising cost of an education was a form of oppression. demonstrators attempted to shut down california hall but there are no reports of arrests or damage. in the past 15 minutes a day of action at the san francisco civic center. students called for relief from the increasing burden of educational loans. the money crunch is felt by the school administration as well. for the fourth time in a row the school is cutting back on

teachers, postponing building repairs. >> and hundreds of students at berkeley high school joined in the day of action. students walked out of class and marked to the school board for another rally. organizers say they wanted students to have a voice as well as college students. fire at university of california at berkeley forced forced the evacuation of students and staff in a building there at 10:00 this morning. police say sparks from construction equipment started the fire in a laboratory. the building is home to the mechanical escnearing department. teacher pleaded not guilty to opusessing special education students. alexia bogdis was arraigned on

9 misdemeanor counts. she works at roosevelt elementary school. she said i have never abused a child and i can't believe this is happening to me. six others face action for not reporting the abuse. police arrested a 20-year- old man in connection with the stabbing debt of his roommate. police arrested him after responding to a 911 call last night. no word on a motive although police say the two argued. crews found and rescued a skier this afternoon who was injured during a avalanche near the alpine meadows ski resort before 3:00 this morning. the sheriff's department launched a search and rescue operation, several other skiers escaped and contacted the sheriffmous department. it -- the sheriff's department.

crews had a difficult time of getting through four feet of snow. we heard from the crews, they said it could be a half hour before they get the skier out and transported to a hospital. things are starting to dry out but earlier today, scattered showers made for a soggy morning commute. this is interstate 680. rain was heavy at times and causing problems on the road. it was widespread across the bay area. the rain caused concerns for two neighborhoods that are vulnerable to land slides. ktvu's jade hernandez spoke to one resident whose home is red tagged. >> reporter: that house is red tagged. the owner says she can do nothing but worry when it

rains. >> reporter: she isn't sure what she will find after the rain last night. >> if the rain is there, there was rain for past two days, water is under the house. >> reporter: a year ago they were given 24 hours to move out. they rent elsewhere now. they were dropped by their insurance company, and now their credit is ruined ruined and she fears for her neighbors. >> i am worried about the hillside. i am hoping they will protect the neighbors. >> reporter: across the bridge in san francisco, rains have not effected this hillside. the city, responsible for the land, cleaned up debris two months ago after a mudslide. they are also monitoring the area. she wishes her city would do

airport. officials say they didn't find anything suspicious. passengers boarded another plane for their flight to sphosan francisco international airport. a judge dismissed a lawsuit aimed at trying to shut down medical marijuana clubs in california. the judge ruled the justice department is free to enforce federal drug laws. the lawsuit was brought by a pot club and claimed a memo told prosecutors not to focus on medical marijuana clubs. the judge said that memo was just a statement of priorities and not a commitment. a fountain made in paris and lived to the east bay in the 1900s has become the target of thieves. ktvu's rob roth is in oakland to tell us what they got away with. >> reporter: for 99 years the fountain stood here in downtown oakland till now. officials say two orn minutes that used to fill this space

are now missing. this fountain is listed in the national register of historic places but it is not supposed to look like this. two of the ornaments were stolen last month. >> it is not replaceable. the other two pieces are now under lock and key. the pieces weigh 200 pounds each and officials believe they were targeted by metal thieves. >> we are hoping the public will help us in recovering these items. >> reporter: he says the laws strict and prohibit accepting pieces like this but some dealers will and the price of metal is high right now. >> all going to india, china

counselors in a school district could be out of a job. they issued warning notices telling them their jobs may be cut at the end of the school year. law requires districts to warn employees of possible layoffs by march 15. those who lose their jobs must be notified by the 15ths. lawmakers rejected a plan to cut a plan. they voted down to cut millions from calworks. the plan would have stopped welfare benefits for those who can't find work after two years. it would have saved a billion dollars. critics say it would have devastated families. a prosecutor filed a lawsuit against a former prosecutor. they are former colleagues in the district attorney's office. he sued after they got into

fight in the district attorney's office two years ago. in the lawsuit he claims he suffered partial vision loss from the fight. he hasn't yet commented. winter storm warning expired two hours ago. chains are required on interstate 80 through the mountain passes. snow started falling on monday and some spots are seeing 5 feet of new snow. that is good news for skiers and snowboarders. this is what it looked like today. the visitors are also providing a much needed economic shot in the arm for businesses. the snow is welcome, so is the rain but our chief meteorologist bill martin is here now and big change is on the way. >> yeah. rain, snow, winter storm, it is gone now and high pressure builds in. it will change. feels like spring time,
