a skier is rushed to the hospital after getting trapped in an avalanche near tahoe. what our first responder told our ktvu camera. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. a skier is hospitalized in critical condition after being buried in an avalanche. it took a rescue crew two hours to reach the man in the rugged terrain near the alpine ski resort. the crew had to ski before they could get him on a snow cat and get him to the hospital. he was then taken to the hospital in truckee.

our ktvu director was one of the first on the scene. he spoke to a rescuers that painted a clear picture of what happened when the wall of snow came down. >> it was a pretty big slide. the victim, there was three guys and one was caught in the slide right from the get go and taken down the mountain quite a ways. probably 300 feet down. he was all messed up. he was pretty wrapped around a tree. and quite a few broken limbs. the rescue team had to race against the clock to get the man out of the snow before dark. authorities have not yet released the man of the rescued skiers or the two men that were with him. we'll go live to the sierra, the avalanches the sierras face right now. students attended rallies and protests to call attention to education.

the rallies ended with officers issuing citations. amber lee is live where students issued their petitions. >> reporter: a dozen protesters held a sit in here and refused to move. around 7:00 tonight one by one, protesters emerged from the state building. they had been cited for trespassing after refusing to leave the area. >> but i'm going to have my pay cut and i'm already working harder because the class sizes are larger. there's less services for the students and so the teachers have to fill in the gaps. this protester was also detained and proudly held up her citation. she told us she came to the state building to participate in a teach in. >> we did a really successful action where we went to the

offices of mark leno, the office of leland yee. >> these protesters told us the lawmakers weren't there but they had their staff fax a letter to the state capital. the demands include fully funding public education and social services. tax the rich and drop student loan debts. >> how much of your paycheck goes to the student loan? >> i would say 40%. it's more than my rent in this city. >> reporter: some people attended a day of action rally at civic center before they made their way to the state building to support those who were detained and cited. this mission school teacher says she's expecting a pink slip any day. >> it's horrible and you can't help but take it personally. >> we are unstoppable, another world is possible. >> reporter: these protesters are planned to rally to be held at the state capital monday. they say educators and students from around the state are expected to participate. reporting live in san

francisco, amber lee ktvu channel 2 news. about 200 students and their supporters rallied outside sprawl hall in berkeley. a small group marched to frank ogawa and then marched back to campus. the protest started this morning. some said the high cost of education may force them to quit school. some students walked out of classes just before 3:00 this afternoon and marched to the berkeley school board offices near by for a rally. organizers say, high school students should also have a voice when it comes to education. >> parents and teachers from castro valley high school also joined with students for a day of action. they lined the street to speak out about budget cuts and a stands for schools rally. the castro valley school board is meeting tonight to consider

a number of money saving moves including teacher lay off, cuts to programs and increased class sizes. in just 30 minutes the day of action at uc santa cruz how students there managed to close off campus and mixed reaction from school officials. the city of oakland is trying to recover two bronze plaques. a month ago two of the four sculpted pieces at the base of the fountain disappeared. they each weighed 200 pounds and were bolted to the statute. >> we're hope tag the public will help us in recovering -- we're hoping the public will help us in recovering these items. >> reporter: city officials removed the other bronze keeping for safekeeping. they say if the misses pieces are not returned they will try to raise money to replicate them. new at 10:00, police in

antioch are about to get a badly needed boost in manpower on the streets. eric rasmussen is live in antioch tonight with the move to hire more officers and the change in strategy when it comes to fighting crime, eric. >> reporter: frank, antioch police say their goal is to have more officers out here proactivity patrolling hot spots like this one in sicamore. we've been running our own stops and we've seen officers stop by here six or seven times. but they say they are understaffed and they're working to get more officers on patrol as soon as possible. when a car crashed into this fence. >> boom, it was just a horrible sound. >> reporter: neighbor mccarthy was just steps away. >> when i walked down the corner it was just like a horrible accident. >> reporter: no one was hurt but the suspect got away. it's just the latest crime that has many people in antioch demanding action. >> our community is in dire need of getting more police

officers on the street. the police department knows it, and the citizens know it. >> reporter: now police chief allen cantando has the green light to hire three new full time officers the department will also bring on up to five part time per diem officers almost right away. >> if we can use per diem officers during our peak times, that will free up officers inside the department to go out and actually work patrol to respond to emergency calls for service. >> reporter: while antioch pd is authorized to have up to 126 patrol officers, tight budgets have widdled the force down to 90. >> you've noticed a lot of things that have been going on every weekend. i think having police driving around will deter some of that. >> reporter: tonight the chief says these new hires will be lateral officers meaning they'll come from other agencies so they'll be able to start and hit the streets faster. we're told the mid-range salary for a patrol officer is about

$132,000 a year. we're live here in antioch, eric rasmussen, ktvu news. police in martinez say they are arrested a man this afternoon for carrying a loaded handgun near hombra high school. an anonymous call came before 4:00 this afternoon. he was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed weapon. school officials say he never entered the campus. in a suburb of cleveland, ohio today, students and parents marched to chardon high school where three students were shot and killed on monday. classes will resume there tomorrow. today's return to campus is seen as part of the healing process. the football coach who's credited with chasing the teenage gunman from the school had a message for the victim's families. >> i want you to know i was with them. i prayed with them, i wiped their tears, and i know god with was them. i don't know why this happened, i only wish i could have done

more. >> 17-year-old tj lane was charged today with three counts of aggravated murder. prosecutors said they want to try him as an adult which could lead to life in prison without parol. supporters of a ballot measure that would repeal the death penalty in california said today that they have enough signatures to put it on the ballot in november. the group is called safe in california. they want to replace life in prison with death without parol. also leading the push is a man who spent 17 years on death row before his conviction was overturned. >> i can't get those 17 years back, but i can make a difference. and i can make a change. and come november, california voters can make a change as well. >> reporter: right now there are 725 inmates on death row in california. that means if 10 prisoners were

put to death each year, it would take 72 years to execute all of them. executions are currently on hold in california and have been for the past seven years. the avalanche in the sierra this afternoon that seriously injured a skier raises the question of just how dangerous the conditions are right now in the high country. richard sharp talked to an expert about how a relatively dry winter is playing a role. >> reporter: it can all be explained in layers. let me show you on the grown. i've cut away untouched snow. down at the bottom of the snow it's pretty hard packed. but just here a few inches higher your first sinks right into it. those are the layers we're talking about. even though it's not a lot of feet of snow it is very dangerous. >> reporter: this is video taken by the sierra avalanche center, it shows the dangerous conditions that put the avalanche risk at considerable. >> that one went all the way.

>> reporter: experts test the snow for layer, they found several weak layers that could easily give way and cause accidents. conditions are made worse by the weak winter. >> a shallow snow pack tends to be weaker, they tend to last longer so the dangers are more prolonged with the weak snow pack. >> reporter: many experienced skiers stay away. instead of skiing, tyler target is tuning skis at local ski shops in truckee. everyone with 10 years of back country experience he would not go out in these conditions because of high avalanche dangerous. >> you put a skier on top of that and they slide. >> reporter: to make things worse, the folks that monitor are in danger themselves ,

injured two children. police say a woman driving a mini van parked into a parked pickup truck on 94th avenue at plymouth street. officers tell us the cause appeared to be a combination of speed and alcohol. two girls ages 3 and 7 were injured. the mother was also hurt. all three were then taken to the hospital. we are learning new details tonight about a san francisco man who was found dead on a mission district sidewalk last month. the body of 47-year-old richard spread was found february 19th on julian avenue. neighbors suggested his cries for help went unheated. a preliminary investigation now suggests sprague was strangled. his body was found just a few blocks away from where he lived. sprague's domestic partner says he left to buy cigarettes but no wallet or cell phone. conservative lost one of their most passionate warriors. he collapsed during a walk near

new at 10:00, honors tonight for barbara lee and others by a group that helps women who are living with hiv. the organization world held a gala in downtown oakland. the party was to say thank you to community leaders, health practitioners and clergy. representative lee received the champion award for keeping the issue on the minds of policymakers. one world volunteer says the worse part of being hiv positive is the stigma. >> if people educated themselves, and learned about this disease, and maybe volunteered. >> reach out. >> reach out, yeah volunteer come and spend the day with us and you will see we're no different than anybody else. >> reporter: the world has been in existence for 20 years to provide education, leadership for hiv positive women and families. new figures out today shows the month of february was the best month for auto sales in four years. more than 1 million vehicles were sold in the u.s. an

many afghans are still furious about the burning of muslim holy books last week. the u.s. has since apologized but a total of six americans have been killed. all of this comes as the u.s. is stepping up training of afghan forces as part of our exit strategy. in syria, the government says it is now in control of a key neighborhood in homs. rebels say they made a tactical retreat after weeks of bombardment. syria says it will allow the red cross in tomorrow. the rebels call themselves the free syrian army and say they seized a tank from afghan forces and are now -- from syrian forces and are now using it against them. the 600 passengers were given showers and hot meals, some decided to continue their vacation, others took off on

fit given the long life of macy's in the city. fire officials on the peninsula held a ground breaking today for a new fire station. and it's a big one. the 12,000 square foot facility will replace an older station in east palo alto. the new station will serve the communities of east palo alto, and menlow park. 63% of the calls it gets are from medical emergencies and only 3% are for fires. turns out the recent rains have not affected a san francisco neighborhood where there was a major rock slide at the end of january. they cleaned up all the rocks and debris and are still hon toring -- still monitoring the hill. the section that gave way is in the telegraph hill neighborhood which is not far from coit tower. >> it's cooling off rapidly outside. temperatures tonight are going to get in the 30s, we might see
