sunshine. breezy though to windy. that is a north wind it will be sunny and good to go today. here is tara. here is a live look at 880 near the oakland coliseum 37 it was windy out here yesterday but it seems like that has calmed down. you are looking good on your friday morning commute. next we have a welcome at the east shore freeway. the headlights are folks heading westbound toward the mccarthur maze. we are experiencing more traffic at the bay bridge toll splay. the metering lights have not gone on yet. ktvu claudine wong is there at the scene now to tell us why it's going to take pg&e probably all day to get the power back. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. it is a mess out here. let me take you up to the pole that has been damaged as you can see basically it's leaning

over. you have pg&e crews up high trying to figure out how to get the power rerouted and how to get the power pole fixed. this is the intersection of kelly and bay view. you can see all the heavy equipment they brought in here. they have three of the cherry pickers which brings the pg&e crews up high to get this damaged fixed. you have cal down here trying to reroute traffic. you have about 260 people without power. once you look at it now is the pole they want to put in there. the first priority is getting the power rerouted and getting the situation stabilized and then they will worry about getting the new pole in and the repairs gone. they do tell me it could take all day long. they hope to have power restored by mid afternoon. residence trying to get in and around this area. still quite a mess. how did this happen? it apparently happened about

11:30, 11:40 last night when the car came crash into the power pole. we do not know the condition of the driver. we should say we are putting in calls to hayward pd to figure out what happened with that crash. but again at this hour the focus is on getting power to folks out here. as you can see, there is a lot of work left to be done. live in hayward claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. we have sad news from the sierra. a skier has died after getting swept up in an avalanche in lake tahoe's back country. that happened yesterday afternoon while a man was skiing with two other people. a ktvu web producer was actually among the first people on the scene. he spoke to a member of the tahoe rescue team who painted a clear picture of what happened when the wall of snow came down. >> it was a pretty big slide and the victim there were three guys and one was caught in the

slide right from the get two and taken down the mountain quite a ways. probably 300 feet down. >> the plaster county coroner is expected to release the name of the skier that died later this morning. the deadly accident should serve as an important reminder to everyone heading to the tahoe ski resorts this weekend. this is video from the sierra avalanche center showing the dangerous conditions facing skiers and snow borders. especially while out in the back country. the tahoe ski resorts are expected to be busy this weekend following the first big snowstorm we've had. a lot of people will be heading there. paul chambers is on the road to tahoe. chicking in and looking -- checking in and looking for snow. >> reporter: we are actually on our way to tahoe. i tell you a lot of people are going to be heading up there this weekend. take a look for yourself. the roadways are clear.

if you want to get a head start, you can get away from work head on out right now. a lot of people are expected to hit the slopes this weekend. >> it's what everyone has been waiting for for the last two or three months. >> it's about time we got snow. everyone is really excited. >> reporter: question the excitement is in the -- and yes the excitement is in the area. the winter storm that gave the bay area a smack down with rain brought real snow. some reported they had upwards of five feet of snow that has fallen since monday. yesterday's high winds delayed the opening of a lot of upper lifts. since this may be the biggest ski weekend of the season, i'm sure lines will be just as long. we will be taking ourselves on the road to tahoe. hopefully stop along. if you're not heading that way hopefully we will find more people to talk to.

no snow whatsoever. if you get an opportunity to head out. if you're lucky and have the day off, you might want to head out right now. live in plaster county paul chambers. 6:05. overnight news san francisco's federal building still the site of an occupy protest. the protestors claimed they were reasserting their right to peacefully assemble. last night they told ktvu they had no plans to leave. >> despite the rain, despite the playful antagonism of the city administration, we remain. we are not going away. this revolution is on a crash course to success. >> back in december police cleared out an occupy encampment from right in front of that very same building. also in san francisco police cited about a dozen protestors that held a sit in at the state office building on golden gate avenue. last nights demonstration was part of a larger day of action.

calling attention the state education budget cuts also promoting the so-called millionaires tax. uc santa cruz hundreds of students blocked the main entrances to the campus and on monday an occupy the capitol demonstration is planned for sacramento. there are more signs that the u.s. job market is getting better. it has helped to make for a strong week on wall street. but could rising gas prices threaten future economic recovery? coming up, we'll go live to our washington, d.c. bureau. 6:07. tara is saying she will help you get to where you need to go, but no real problems at this moment? >> i don't want to jinx us but wow my road maps are really clear. hopefully it will stay that way for our friday. if you head over to contra costa county. those headlights are westbound traffic. everything is looking pretty good at this hour. at the bay bridge toll splay we do expect the metering lights

fallen. maybe we will get that miracle march. 40s for some. 30s for others. napa airport was in the 30s. the breeze kicks up same for fairfield and livermore. we have a northerly breeze for some. it will be sunny and cool in the city. i've seen anywhere from 38-48 for lows. sunny. i'm going officially 62. our system has gone. moved off in the four corners. rapidly high pressure is here today. probably all the way into sunday early monday. the rain is over. warmer weather is on tap for today. that will carry us into saturday and level off into sunday as well. expect for the mornings being cold, the days will be sunny and nice. cold morning. maybe patchy fog. otherwise we are good to go for 50s and low 60s around the bay. mid 60s inland. north wind does help some. it's gusting to 30. keep that in mind if you're heading in that direction. mid 60s for almost everybody

here. warmer weather takes us into saturday and sunday. partly cloudy and cooler on tuesday. the south and midwest are expecting more severe weather today. tornadoes as you know devastated several states earlier this week. killing 13 people. six people died in harrisburg, illinois where the cleanup there is on hold because another storm is approaching. right now forecasters warn this new storm could bring more hail, rain, and even more tornadoes. it could even be stronger in the deadly storms they had on wednesday. up next we have incredible video from southern california. shows a swat team moving in on a suspected bank robber. plus new clues in the search for an armed robbery suspect in san rafael. another new round in the battle over plastic bags. bay area !

look at this. southern california swat team opening fire. moving in on a suspected bank robber. the banks front door shattered as a hostage is pulled to safety. now police shot the man they think was responsible for this four hour standoff. three officers were actually hurt during this rescue. but they as well as the hostage we're told will be okay. antigovernment rebels of syria dealing with a set back in their continuing struggling. the rebels retreated from a

neighborhood in holmes that had been in their control in the last couple of weeks. the rebels say they running out of weapons. they are also calling humanitarian conditions unbarable. however the syrian government is allowing the red cross to enter into homes. voters in iran are heading to the polls today. ayatollah ali turned in his ballot today. this is to decide key palliment reraces. this is the first vote in iran since ahmadinejad won. there are more signs the u.s. job market is getting better and this is some good economic news this week. as alison burns tells us economists are worried about looming threats to the economy. >> reporter: first the labor

department reported the number of people filing unemployment claims is at a four-year low. we also saw the dow jones industrial average close over 13,000 for the first time in four years. in what has been a strong month on wall street. and retail stores reported a jump in sales for february in a sign americans are spending more. but amidst all the positive news rising gas prices are threatening the game. >> there are a massive number of people in this country. i would guess around 40% now that are really making choices involving food verses gasoline. >> the monthly jobs report comes out the first friday of each month. it has been pushed until next week. we'll take a look at how many jobs economists believe were added last month during my next update in an hour. for now we are live in washington, d.c. alison burns. people in alameda could

vote on a sales tax hike. the half sales increase could generate $2 million. the revenue would go toward police and fire rescues. the city council will consider placing the tax more on the ballot on wednesday. our time now 6:15. san rafael police have surveillance video they hope you will see and help catch an armed robbery suspect. security footage from the gateway gas station on north gate drive you can see the suspect walks in, points a gun at the clerk who hands over money from the cash register. all of this happened february 14th. look at this sketch now. this is a police sketch of the suspect. police think he also robbed the union 76 gas station. at that time, police say the suspect hit the clerk with a gun metal thieves are being blamed for two bronze

ornaments. the bronze pieces each weigh about 200 pounds. they were bolted on to the statue. city officials are asking recycling companies keep an eye out for anybody trying to sell those pieces. they say if the missing pieces are not returned, they will try to raise the money to replace them. s owner of the -- the owner of the new jersey funeral home that held whitney houston's wake denies taking a photo. she says she knows who took the photo that ran in the national inquire but she won't identify that person. she says that is up to the houston family. time now 6:17. there is another challenge to san francisco's ban on plastic bags. the industry is suing they say san francisco did not perform an environmental impact report when it expanded the ban to all businesses. this lawsuit also claims city doesn't have the right to

regulate restaurants since the state regulates them. now it wants the whole law just thrown out. supporters of the plastic bag ban call this an end run around the law. it's now worth a little more to recycle the plastic bottles and aluminum cans. they raised the bulk rate. now recycling centers will pay $1 a pound for plastic bottles. the rate for aluminum cans go up .3 cents. there is another accident. we've had a few this morning. tara is in for sal. >> we have a two-car crash. this is eastbound four just west of hill crest avenue. looks like an ambulance is on the way. so it's an injury accident. right now let's head outside and take a live look at the east shore freeway. those headlights are folks heading westbound toward the

crushed. police are hoping that video you saw will help them catch the driver responsible. back here at home talks have broken down between the mt. diablo school district and teacher. continuing negotiations failed to yield any results. the contra costa times reports union leaders proposed a one- time 3% payment with no furloughs. the district offered less than half that amount but only if the governors tax proposal passed. police in martinez are trying to figure out why a man brought a loaded gun near the alhambra campus. investigators have identified the man as michael woodall. it's not clear why he took that weapon there or why he was near the campus. a former central california teacher is under investigation after quitting his job and starting a new life with a

student. the teacher 41-year-old james hooker resigned from a medesto high school last week. he left after police launched an investigation into his relationship with his student 18-year-old jordan powers. hooker insists the two did not start dating in the l girl was of legal age. he left his wife and children and now living with powers. students and participants say they are -- students and parents say they are shocked. >> he is 41 and she is 18 it's legal but it's gross. >> it's wrong for him to pursued her in any way while he was still a teacher. our time now 6:26. if you're heading to los angeles, there is a part of the freeway you may want to avoid for several nights. cal tran will be out there doing overnight work on the 405 freeway between highway 101 and getty center drive. that is the same section that they closed around the clock

on ktvu channel 2 morning news. it's friday, march 2nd i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. thank you for joining us. it's 6:30. >> happening right now pg&e says it's going to take them all day to get the power back on in parts of hayward. more than 250 customers are in the dark as we speak because of a car crash late last night. ktvu claudine wong is there in hayward. she has new information. claudine. >> reporter: they are trying hard to work very quickly out here in hayward. but you can see, it is a mess. take a look at that power pole that is leaning in our direction. that's what is causing all the problems. that than 250 people as you said without power. the latest word from crews on the scene is they are hoping to reroute power and get power to most people on by 8:00 a.m.. there is going to be about a hand ever of people maybe six will be out of power for longer than that. you can see the pole that came crashing down, the way that it ended up tilting in that

direction because of a car crash that happened about 11:30- 11:45 last night. we talked to residence out here. they heard it. multiple cars were involved. one man came out to see if anyone needed help. it's believed at this point the person play fled the scene. we have been talking to hayward police vying to get information on them. the situation over here at kelly and bay view is they've got to replace that pole that is leaning toward us. that is going to take some time. as you take a look at the pole on bay view, you can see the wires have been disconnected over there. what they did put in jumpers to jump the power around this area and try to get power back on. we've been talking to residence. it has been a long and cold night without any power on to their house. they are trying to be patient as pg&e continues to work. live in hayward claudine wong. in overnight news a shooting victim remains in the hospital right now after a

shooting in east oakland. the unidentified victim was rushed to highland hospital at 12:45 this morning. he suffered two gunshot wounds. one in the face. one in the shoulder. friends of the victim say he was shot while standing on the sidewalk near the intersection of stone and pippin streets. there is more than one suspect. so far no word of any arrests or possible motive. san francisco federal building remains the focus of an occupy protest this morning. so far though there is only one protestor left. protestors claim they were reasserting their right to peacefully assemble. last night they told ktvu they had no plans to leave. 6:33. the exgirlfriend of san francisco ross mirkarimi is heading to court today for a private meeting with the judge in his domestic abuse case. allie rasmus is live now with the key decision the judge will have to make after that private meeting. >> reporter: her name is

christina flores. she is one of san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi's exgirlfriends. she lives in southern california but she flew up to the bay area for this hearing today. she describes herself as a tv host, an actress. this is a picture from her web page. prosecutors want flores to testify against the sheriff in his domestic violence trial. the judge could decide as early as today whether or not that will happen. judge garrett will meet privately with flores before she decides whether she will be allowed to testify in this trial. flores filed a complaint against mirkarimi in january. this was before mirkarimi was married to his current wife eliana lopez. he is accused of becoming physically aggressive with lopez during a dispute on new years eve. he is facing misdemeanor domestic violence charges. attorneys say flores should not

be allowed to testify against him. she never reported any alleged abuse during their relationship. but the judge will meet privately with mirkarimi's exgirlfriend. live in san francisco allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. tragic news from the sierra. a skier died after being swept away by an avalanche. reporter brian hickey is in blue canyon this morning with more on the rescue effort to save that skier. >> reporter: it's such a sad thing that an awesome day of skiing was marked by this devastation. avalanches were rated as high when this happened. that is where three men were out skiing yesterday when they were swept away in this slide. one of those victims was pinned

up against a tree. he was carried 300 feet down a mountain and wrapped around a tree where he suffered significant trauma and partial burial at that point. it took rescuers hours to get to him. he was semi conscious when he got to him. and one rescuer telling us the scene was very unstable. they had to use route selection just to get there so they weren't caught in slides themselves. >> it was a pretty big slide and the victim was there were three guys and one was caught in the slide right from the get go. and taken down the mountain. quite a ways. probably 300 feet down. >> reporter: and as they were taking the victim from the snow cap that was driven into the scene to bring him out and transporting him in the ambulance they were performing cpr on that victim at that time.

the 29-year-old man succumbing to his injuries. the avalanche center has downgraded the conditions to considerable and they say anyone head into the back country really should have some knowledge of avalanche awareness and bring with you basic gear. it starts with a good backpack. extra layer of clothings. one thing you never leave home without. this is my beacon. it sends out a signal. if you become buried it allows the rest of your group to find you. if they too are wearing beakers. my ski poles come apart. they back apropos you can start probing the snow toothing them. even the lightest fewfulliest powder. so you definitely need a shovel. bassic gear and knowledge you should have if you are going into the back country. a day like yesterday with very unstable snow and wind up there was not a good time to be out

there. send it back to you. >> brian, great advice. so glad you showed people all of that gear. i have a question. i haven't been able to find out. do you know if he was -- were these skiers on the chair lift and hiking over to some of that terrain? a lot of people like to do or were they completely back country? >> reporter: they were definitely mt. back country. it's a very easily accessible area. it's a popular way to go in there. however, you can get there across a ridge top from alpine meadows. i skied yesterday in sugar bowl. i find it pretty unlikely they would have gone from alpine meadows but we don't know it. >> that is great. brian hickey thank you so much

on. they went on at on at 6:18 this morning. let's check in with steve. thank you. i patiented you a very -- i painted you a very pretty picture. cold out there. it will be sunny side up today and great visibility. high pressure kicked in. everything has moved off. so we have just maybe few clouds and patchy fog and frost. clear cold, breezy. sunshine for all day long. and then sunny and breezy. we will get a little bit of a breeze. mainly out to the valley. temperatures yesterday due to the pain and the clouds and the fog were held in the 50s. today we'll see the 60s. average highs this time of year 60-66. we'll be right in that range. 66 for santa rosa and also around san jose is about average for this time of year. 40s on the temps. if it wasn't for the breeze some of this would be colder. tonight into saturday we'll have a lot more 30s.
