well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's friday, march 2nd. the power is still out for hundreds of people in hayward. neighbors at kelly street and bayview avenue say multiple cars hit a utility pole late last night. claudine wong is live in hayward to explain when the power might be back on. >> reporter: most people should be back on by 8:00. you can see crews working hard on the street. you can see the pole knocked down. it was leaning for a good part of the morning. now they are taking it down. they are gonna put a new pole in. now, residents out here have had to spend the night and morning dealing with this power outage. we talked with residents who

live two houses away from where all of this work is ongoing. they've been walking around with flashlights, just trying to get through their morning. they were actually awake when the crash happened and told us what happened. >> there were several vehicles, like three of them, two of them were together. they stopped. the one in the white car was gonna make a turn. he then hit the pole. >> reporter: back live out here on kelly and bayview. pg&e told me, look, they will have most of this power restored to the 250-plus people without power. but there will be about six people who are at the toch of the block who won't have power for most of the day. they are estimating 3:30 to get this back up and running. but certainly they are working as fast as they can. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:02.

overnight, a man was shot and wounded in east oakland. the unidentified victim was rushed to the hospital around 12:45 this morning. police say he suffered two gunshot wounds. one in the face and one in the shoulder. friends of the victim say he was shot while standing on the sidewalk near the intersection of stone and pippin street. witnesses say there is more than one suspect. so far no word of any arrests or a possible motive. 7:03. the domestic abuse case against ross mirkarimi takes a new twist today. allie rasmus is in the city to tell us about the woman in his past. >> reporter: her name christina flores. she's one of the sheriff avenue ex-girlfriends. this is video from her website. she describes herself as a tv host and actress. she lives in southern california and flew to the bay area for this hearing today.

she was ordered to do so by the judge. prosecutors want flores to testify against the sheriff in his domestic violence trial. the judge in this case could decide as early as today whether or not that will happen. judge wong will meet privately with flores before he decides whether she will be able to testify. flores filed a complaint against the sheriff claiming to be abused by him. this was before the sheriff was married to his current wife. the sheriff is accused of being physically abusive to his wife now new year's eve. he faces domestic violence. his trial starts next week. now, the defense says flores should never be able -- should not be allowed to testify. she never proud any

ski area. i'm here with the video of the rescue yesterday. rescuers had to climb more than 1,000 feet in the canyon where they had word of this ash lave -- avalanche. one of them had been swept away and buried by the avalanche. they say the man, when they got there had been carried down the hill. he was only partially buried but they say when they found him, he had been wrapped around a tree. >> there were three guys. one was caught in the slide right from the get-go and taken down the mountain quite a ways. they say the man had multiple injuries, including several broken limbs and other trauma that came with him being wrapped around the tree. of course, we now know later,

that he did die of the injuries. sad news in the sierra. the sierra avalanche center yesterday had rated the avalanche conditions as high. today they've downgraded that to considerable, which anybody heading back there, the danger is out there in the backcountry. live at blue canyon, brian hickey, back to you. >> thank you. i imagine a lot of people heading out there this weekend. 7:10. many communities in the midwest and south are still cleaning up from this week's tornadoes and they could see even more severe weather this afternoon and tonight. twisters destroyed homes in several states in the south elf earlier this week, killing 13 people. six people died in harriesburg, illinois. it's looking less likely tornadoes could hit that area with all of the debris around

mid-60s. san rafael police hope sweaunt video will help them catch an armed robbery suspect. this is on north -- surveillance video will help them catch an armed robbery suspect. this is the scene. it all happened on february 14th. police believe the suspect robbed the union 76 gas station on del presidio boulevard. in that incident, police say the suspect hit the clerk with a gun. incredible video of a s.w.a.t. team moving in on a suspected bank robber who was holding a hostage in southern california. the glass front door shatters and police pull the bank manager to safety. when the gunman came to the door to get something he demanded from police. the bank manager is okay. 7:14. newly-released court papers giving us new information about the federal agent involved in a

deadly workplace shooting in california. he was shot and killed after he shot and wounded his supervisor at a long beach immigration and customs enforcement office. now we're learning that garcia had been the subject of complaints of immigrant advocates at the aclu. they are accusing him of using coercive tactics with immigrants following the raid of the company accused of using illegal immigrants. police in martinez trying to figure out why a man took a loaded gun near the alhambra high school campus. officer arrested the 22-year- old man yesterday after getting an anonymous call. it's still not clear what he had that weapon or why he was near the campus. shares are yelp are surprising analysts by jumping more than 60% of its initial public offering price. it opened at $15 a share at the

washington, some economists are worried about what's ahead that may threaten the recovery. alison? >> reporter: dave, rising gas prices and the european debt crisis are among the biggest threats right now. we have gotten some good news this week, reports show retail sales jumped in february to a four-year high. existing home sales are way up and foreclosures are down. but some economists say another recession could be looming if americans cannot afford to fill tlup tanks because of the increases in the price of oil. >> these green chutes could turn brown quickly if the oil continues to rise. >> reporter: economists expect about 200,000 jobs were added last month. that probably won't be enough to move the unemployment rate.

an american teacher has been killed in a murder-suicide in iraq t was his student who pulled the trigger. this happened in iraq's kurdish region. the 18-year-old pulled out a gun and shot the teacher, identify as jeremiah small. student then turned the gun on himself. at this point, police have no motive. let's go to tara. something has happened in san jose. what's going on? >> well, it looks like crews were able to clear everything fairly quickly. it looks like -- we pan to the side. you can see there's a little bit of may hem, still working on clearing that portion of the accident. this was southbound 680, south of south jackson street. so right before you get on 101,

teachers union. an impasse was declared yesterday. the contra costa county times reports union leaders proposed a one-time payment with no furloughs. 7:33. police in antioch are about to get a badly-needed boost in man power. the goal is to get more officers patrolling the city's trouble spots as soon as possible. the city leaders have given the police department the feen light to hire three full-time officers and the department will also bring on as many as five part-time police officers. our community is in dire need of getting more police officers on the street. the police department knows it. the citizens know it. the police department says more officers are needed due to the recent increase in crime in antioch. state prison hit a milestone. the ex- tra beds are out and

overcrowding is over. california prisons have removed the last of nearly 20,000 extra beds that were set up in common areas at prisons to house all of the inmates. these double and triple-stack beds are now gone. the prison population has dropped pioneerly 19,000 inmates since a new law took effect in october that is sending less serious off fen eferred to county jails instead of state prisons. it looks like voters will be able to decide the future of the death penalty in california. supporters have -- supporters of a ballot measure say they have enough signatures for the ballot in november. the group, save california, once to replace lethal injections with life in prison without the possibility of parole. another challenge to san francisco's ban on plastic bags. the industry is suing. they say san francisco did not do an environmental impact report when it expanded the

ban. the lawsuit also says the cityin the -- does not have the right to regulate restaurants. now it wants the entire law thrown out. now, supporters of the plastic bag ban call this an end run around the law. it's now worth a little more to recycle those plastic bottles and aluminum cans. the state has raised the bulk rate to $1 a pound for plastic pottles. and the rates for aluminum cans goes up 3 cents a pound. people in alameda could be asked to vote on a sales tax hike on the upcoming june ballot. the half-cent increase could generate close to $2 million for the city.

could see more severe weather here today. sandra endo has more. >> reporter: good morning. this is one of the areas hardest hit by wednesday's tornadoes. you can see the devastation it left behind. cleanup crews are trying to get -- get ahead of mother nature as they are expecting another storm. they are expecting a hail storm with golf-ball sized hails to come down, also a possible wind storm with gusts up to 45 miles an hour, and right now crews are trying to get ahead of it all. the sheriff said they are calling off a lot of these volunteers. take a look at all of this deb. it's very -- debris. it's very loose. these can be like flying daggers. the level of danger is severe.

these are live pictures of the macarthur maze which is an absolute mess right now because of an earlier accident involving two cars. it happened on westbound 580 at eastbound 24. we have an injury accident. right now there are about tree lanes blocked there. it's plugging everything up. you can see if you are coming from bay bridge headed in this dreck, you are gonna be sitting in traffic for a while. if you are coming up the east shore freeway, the same story. give yourself some extra time. take mass transit because this accident definitely left its mark. it is in the clearing stages here. you can see how extensive the congestion is. this is past powell, past several exists.
