when his car plunged in to iatric. family members released a photograph of him. this morning he drove up from the drive -- from his home to pick up newspaper but this time he missed a driveway and rolled 80 feet down in to the creek. his wife reported him missing but it wasn't until four hours later a neighbor saw him. >> i saw the door was open and i saw his legs in the water and -- water was up to his chest. was in the water and he managed to keep his upper part of the body out of the water. >> that neighbor called for help and he was pulled from the wreck. he was put in the hospital with hypothermia but just died a few hours ago.

there are people that their lives in danger, these rotating storms and tornadoes. >> reporter: the fury unleashed early. ripping off roofs and snapping power lines. as the day went on so did the storm, gaining in strength. from indiana to kentucky and into ohio, watches turned to warnings and people took cover. storms brought heavy rain. golfball sized hail and wind. there are multiple reports of twisters touching down and extensive damage. >> this is a huge outbreak going on in kentucky and across the midsouth. >> reporter: in hamilton tennessee dozens of injuries are reported. the storm sheared trees and ripped through buildings. one man returned to find his home of 30 years reduced to a pile of rubble. >> this is real life. >> reporter: it's a race to clear blocked roads so vehicles can get to the people who need help. >> we are just working at this hour to try to make sure everybody is accounted for.
