good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, march 3rd. the sun is shining bright this morning. let's get to rosemary and that saturday forecast! good morning, rosemary. >> good morning to you! it's going to be a gorgeous day. you don't have outdoor plans. >> inn make make some! >> the 60s yesterday, and into the 70s in some cases today. this morning we're off to a chilly start. we'll look at the your conditions and what you can expect coming up. in overnight news, a man is fighting for his life after a hit-and-run in san francisco. police set down flares and blocked off an area around potrero avenue. the 60-year-old victim was hit offer the sidewalk after 2 a.m. and taken to san francisco general hospital in critical condition. witnesses describe the suspect's vehicle as a cream colored 1970s el camino. police are looking for the gunman who opened fire at a san pablo community center around 10:00 last night at montero bay

community center on terra hills drive. deputies with the contra costa county sheriff's office searched the building and adjacent park looking for clues. dozens of people had gathered for a meeting at that community center last night. one man was wounded in the shooting. no word yet on his condition or what led up to the gunfire. this morning three people are recovering from gunshot wounds after they were hit while playing dice on the street. a man in a car started shooting at a group of people throwing dice near the 22nd00 block of bone street last night in berkeley. three men were hit and all three were transported to the hospital. officers say they have several descriptions of the car and are working to track down the gunman. this morning rescuers in the nation's mid-section are searching for survivors of the powerful storms that have killed at least 32 people since wednesday. the latest storms hit indiana, ohio, kentucky and the deep south. you're looking at video which shows a huge tornado hitting

henryville, indiana. authorities there say tornadoes wiped out some rural communities. and as you can see, some towns were just flattened. survivors describe it as complete destruction. coming up at 7:30, we'll have a live report from henryville, where a tornado leveled neighborhoods there and swept school buses into buildings. this morning in san francisco a few dozen people who cannot afford health insurance will receive much- needed medical care. and some of these procedures will potentially save their lives. allie rasmus is live this morning at the kaiser perm a medical center in the city with more. >> reporter: we're outside kaiser hospital, and through these entrance doors here there are 30 people who are about to undergo surgery this morning for free. it's part of a program kaiser has been doing for nearly 20 years. this is video from past years called operation access, and the goal is to help low income and uninsured people in the community, there are lot of people struggling to get health

insurance coverage, help them get potentially life-saving surgeries. this morning doctors will be performing colonoscopies, hernia surgeries, same-day surgeries where patients don't have to spend the night. we talked to one of the patients this morning who was about to undergo foot surgery. >> i'm glad i'm getting it over with so i can go back to work, start making some money again. >> that man said she was grateful to have this service. these surgeries are being performed for free. doctors, nurses and support staff are all volunteering their time to make this happen for these 30 individuals who are getting the service. people going through the surgeries this morning have all been screened and prepped weeks in advance so this is not the kind of situation where can just show up and expect to be on the receiving end of these free surgeries. but we're told a little later this morning we'll be allowed to go into one of operating rooms and observe these free surgeries taking place. we'll try to provide that for you later in the show this

morning. allie rasmus, ktvu channel news. a reserve officer for the san francisco police department is being called a hero for saving his neighbor's baby. robert cappy sprang into action a few days ago in tracy when his neighbor's child, a 15- month-old, slipped through a sliding glass door that someone left open and fell into his family's pond. he had no pulse. >> i just grabbed him and ran outside on the street and screaming my lungs out for help. i heard somebody come outside the house and screaming help me, help me! >> robert says he knew cpr and called 911. he started chest compressions until suddenly the baby started breathing again. first responders said that if he had not performed cpr, the baby would have likely died. it is being called the largest methamphetamine bust in

u.s. history. authorities seized 750 pounds of meth from an apartment on the woods avenue in san jose. detectives found a lab on thursday while looking for stolen, i pads. the estimated value of the drugs found in the home, $34 million. three people are under arrest and the investigation is still ongood morning. three occupy oakland protestors face hate crime charges. 32-year-old michael davis, necka crawford and randolph wilkins were part of a group gem straighting at a wells fargo bank two weeks ago. a woman criticized them from across the street. officers say the occupiers then surrounded the victim, took her wallet, yanked a president obama pin from her clothing and insulted her perceived sexuality. police are seeking other suspects in the case. davis was arraigned yesterday while the other two will head to court on monday. oakland police chief jordan admits to juggling resources to better implement the mayor's 100-block crimefighting initiative.

he wrote a letter to the community residents complain officers hired for a taxpayer mandated community policing program why shifted to other beats. jordan says 22 other officers have been temporarily reassigned to support what he calls short-term violence reduction strategies. united and continental airlines combine their reservations systems overnight, switching to one computer system. there's some concern, though, about the merge. some analysts say there could be a number of glitches that can result in lost reservations and misplaced luggage. we just checked with sfo and the oakland airport. and right now there are no problems to report. united and continental announced the merger in may of 2010. today's computer system integration is considered to be the most important part of that merger. looks like we got the rain, the snow in the sierra, now we're back to sunshine! >> sunshine! >> which is nice, especially if you're going outside today. >> just in time for the weekend. we're got weather. that's going to feel very spring-like. by the way, my gosh, we're only

good morning to you, san jose! clear, calm and cold. 40 degrees outside your door this morning. bp has reached a deal to settle one of the largest class- action lawsuits ever. the oil company says it expects to pay about $7.8 billion to gulf coast residents after the massive 2010 oil spill. the lawsuits were brought by more than 100,000 fishermen who lost work. clean-up workers who got sick and others who are hurt by the spill. but those who were affected do not have to take the settlement offered. they can opt out of the deal and go forward with their own lawsuits. right now we're hearing into the wreck of the concordia cruise ship underway in italy. it is the initial evidence hearing in the case. the prosecutors say it could take three months to analyze the ship's voice recorder. a feeder is used for the hearing because there are so

many people from former passengers to crew, even lawyers, at least 32 people died or are presumed dead in the january shipwreck. president obama and obama is continuing his assault on subsidies for oil companies. and his weekly video address the president once again called on congress to end them once and for all. >> every year 4 billion of your tax dollars in guess to subsidizing the oil industry. these are the same companies making record profits. tens of billions of dollars a year. i don't think oil companies need more corporate welfare. congress should end this taxpayer giveaway. >> republicans have rejected mr. obama's call. they say ending subsidies would be the same as raising taxes. in our election 2012 coverage, washington state is holding its republican caucuses today, but most of the major candidates are nowhere to be found. texas congressman ron paul is the only candidate in washington this weekend. he held an event yesterday in

ridgefield. he is also the only candidate spending money on campaign ads in that state. so far the texas congressman has spent $40,000 in ads airing on cable. political analysts say the caucuses are an opportunity for paul to get more support. while paul campaigns in washington, rick santorum and mitt romney are battling in ohio. the state is seen as the biggest prize on super tuesday. this is video of santorum campaigning yesterday. polls in ohio show a close race between santorum and romney. and the former massachusetts governor appeared before college students yesterday at cleveland state university. he kept his focus on president obama saying he is out of excuses. despite the importance of ohio on super tuesday, romney won't say the state is a must-win. he says he is just focused on getting the delegates needed for the republican nomination. georgia is also holding its primary on super tuesday, and

that's where newt gingrich held his own campaign event yesterday in savannah. he has said georgia is a must- win for him to keep his candidacy alive. former house speaker is also hoping for a strong showing in tennessee and oklahoma. for the first time a president after israel will visit the bay area. simone perez will arrive in san francisco tomorrow form a five- day stay. on wednesday he will speak to 2000 people at san francisco's temple, and tickets for that event are gone and 400 people have their names on a waiting list for seats that become available. iran is expected to announce the results of parliamentary elections later today. polls in the country closed yesterday and officials are reporting a high voter turnout. 290 seats in the parliament are up for grabs. and early returns so far show conservative rivals of president mahmoud ahmadinejad leading in the race for seats. some government officials say that could make ahmadinejad's

remaining two years in office a bit more hostile. this is the first election in iran since a disputed presidential election three years ago. activists in syria say troops are shelling a number of districts in the city of homs. dozens of people are reportedly wounded, and the government. is blocking the red cross from helping thousands of people who are stranded in the area. a red cross convoy is trying to deliver medical supplies, food and blankets but has not within allowed in. five perhaps to could face a disciplinary review for the burning of the koran. the investigation finds a series of unintentional mistakes led to the desecration. the incident inside a u.s. base in afghanistan touched ofri odds last month that killed more than 30 afghans and six american service members. muslims also burned american flags in retaliation. a more formal u.s. military probe is still weeks from completion. a mortician has resigned

amid a misconduct investigation over his handling of military remains. he was a civilian mortician at dover air force mortuary in delaware. he was accused of mismanaging and mishandling human remains. investigators say he illegally tried to punish whistle blowers who had accused him of mishandling remains. hundreds of people gathered at camp pendleton yesterday to say good-bye to the six marines who died in a midair collision in arizona. the men were killed when two choppers crashed during a training mission on february 22nd. the victims included decorated marines in iraq and afghanistan war veterans. the cause of the incident is under investigation. one of victims of the ohio shoot is massacre will be laid to rest today. a visitation was held yesterday night for 16-year-old danny. his funeral is this thorn. he is one of three students

killed in a shooting at the high school monday. the suspected shooter is 17- year-old t.j. lane charged with three counts of aggravated murder. a san jose elementary schoolteacher is expected to plead not guilty to new charges of molestation against him. police filed five additional felony charges against 35-year- old craig chandler after more students came forward to say he sexually abused them. he was arrested in january and is being held without bail. claims filed against the los angeles school district in the wake of a sexual abuse scandal. lawyers representing 20 children accuse of district of ignoring warnings about teacher mark berndt, arrested last month on charges of child molestation. attorneys say there were complaint about him at the school dating back to 1990. >> the school district was negligent, fell asleep, did not protect is kids did, not protect the children, and therefore he continued to

commit his outrageous abuses against the children. >> the school district is not commenting on the legal claims. another teacher also faces child sex abuse charges. three more arrests made in connection with a triple homicide outside eye party in san leandro last year. aaron stewart, anthony perry and stanley turner are facing several counts of murder and attempted murder. the shooting happened outside a tattoo party in a warehouse on alvarado street in october. three people were killed, including a 16-year-old girl. a fourth suspect, paul stevenson, was arrested shortly after the shooting. the motive has not been released. three suspects in a gas station robbery in martinez are now being linked to as many as 30 other robberies across northern california. a ktvu photographer got these exclusive pictures of the three being arrested on tuesday night after a high-speed chase from martinez to the dumbarton bridge. police say the suspects threw money from the during the

happened on the set of a korean tv show in arizona. the two men inside that helicopter were filming a car on the ground as part of a stunt when there was mechanical failure. police say the men were saved because they were wearing helmets and were strapped in with harnesses. it was a wet friday afternoon on one of the curviest streets in the world. lombard street between hyde and leavenworth were a slip and slide. a car hit one fire hydrant on that block around 12:30 in the afternoon and water poured down the street right into a couple of homes. >> i just bought a new rug for the bathroom, and it's a complete flooded mess. >> they cleaned the water, they -- damage the stuff in the garage, but other than that it's fine. >> the street was closed for about three hours while the water department installed a new hydrant. tourists were back on the street by late afternoon. thanks to mother nature, tahoe resorts should finally enjoy a profitable weekend.

devastation in the country's south and midwest after twister after twister plows through cities and small towns. good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2. the search continues for survivors following those deadly storms in the midwest. this is an up close look at a massive tornado sweeping through henriville, indiana yesterday. the path of destruction will become clearer in the days to come. more than 30 people are confirmed dead, entire community have been wiped out. reporter criswell and is live now in henryville, with a look

at the devastation left behind. chris. >> reporter: these storms that struck yesterday have killed at least 32 people so far. as you can see behind me, here in henryville, it's one of hardest hit areas. i'm in front of what was the high school, i say was because look at it now, almost completely demolished. when you think about the fact that 1400 and students go to school and high school and elementary school, and not one of them came out harmed. they all basically got out -- escaped harm's way, most given a 15-minute warning before the tornado smacked through the school. look at this, though. this school bus was parked in the lot right in front of the school. it was blown across the street and into this diner. thankfully, no students on that bus either. bus unfortunately, as we mentioned, the storm has taken 32 lives. not everyone was as lucky at the students here. the stories will be told for a long time.

>> felt like a freight train coming through. >> from tennessee to alabama, to right here in indiana, towns woke up saturday to a dramaticically different landscape than the day before. one altered better a widespread tornado outbreak. >> temperatures before the tornado were fluctuating by 20 degrees from each other, and changed in the split of a second. and then the hail was probably baseball or tennis size. >> this round every tornadoes comes on the heels of another band of storms this week that devastated towns like harrisburg, illinois. one storm chaser says the outbreaks so early in the season could be a warning of what is to come. >> it's telling you we'll have a lot more active into march and april and not even peak season until may so this is just of a precursor of what is coming. >> but they're likely not thinking that far ahead here, instead trying to comprehend how their lives drastically changed in just one day. >> i'm just thankful we all

survived this. material things can be replaced. the house can be replaced. we've got place to stay. warmth, food, and we don't have to worry about that. >> reporter: emergency crews did conduct search and rescue efforts throughout the night and they're even still ongoing. they're on the second round of search and rescue efforts as we speak. so we've also just heard from indiana governor mitch daniels, he is trying to reassure residents that this town will rebuild and aid will come for them. and just trying to help lift the spirits as he tours the damaged area. just moments ago went through the high school and as daylight has hit just a couple hours ago here, folks finally starting to put in perspective exactly what happened. >> and i was just going to ask you, in your story you can see a lot of resident walking around kind of with that dazed look on their face. this morning the same residents actually walk in through the city, helping each other pick

up the destruction the tornadoes left behind? >> yes, i mean this is a tight- knit community. that's what everyone says who we come across. just before we were going live but, a man came up to me and wanted me to let people know if i saw anyone get out the word they're giving away pizzas for anyone who don have a hot meal at the local church, all helping each other out in this time of need. >> chris, thank you, we appreciated it. rosemary is tracking the storms. what can they expect now? >> just awful to see and hear about that. yesterday's deadly storms from the great lakes down to the gulf coast, just plowing through, six states. it looks like unsettled weather here today but you can see the threat has moved off to the east. if we shift to the southeast areas on the florida panhandle

where it's 10:30 in the morning, we've got thunderstorms beginning to fire off. the greatest risk is going to be here, georgia and the carolinas for the afternoon. looks like thunderstorms, straight-line winds and the possibility of a few tornadoes, meaning the threat is much less than what we saw yesterday. the still very unsettled even threatening weather going on in the southeast for today. back to you. life-saving surgeries are going to be performed today in san francisco for people who can't afford to pay for them. ktvu's allie rasmus joins us live from san francisco and kaiser permanente hospital with more on the program making it all possible. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, claudine. we're on the fourth floor of kaiser hospital in san francisco, where 30 people are going to be getting surgeries this morning for free. down this hallway is where the operating room is and we just saw a lot of doctors, nurses and support staff go into that area. across the hall is where the 30 patients are being prepared for

the surgeries happening this morning. this is all part of a program kaiser has been doing for the past 20 years. we have some video of some of the surgeries that have happened under operation access in the past. the goal of this is to reach out to low income and uninsured people in the community who need these potentially life- saving surgeries and otherwise couldn't pay for them because of the cost. so this morning doctors are performing colonoscopies, foot surgeries, cataract surgeries. one of patients was about to undergo surgery for a hernia and he explained he does not have health insurance so this was the only way he could get his problem fixed. >> so thankful and i just thank god for it. and i thank those people involved in giving up free operation, which is so -- kind and so good of them. >> now, again, the people going through these surgeries this

morning and there are 30 surgeries that will be performed. they've all been prepared and screened weeks in advance so this is not the kind of situation where you can show up at the hospital and expect to be signed up for the program. but later this morning, they have the volunteer table out here. this is all because of work of some of the volunteers who have spent their saturdays, doctors and nurses out here also volunteering their time to perform these surgeries for free. and later this morning we're working on getting access to that operating room that is down at the end of the hallway. we're hoping to go into the operating room and bring you some of that video later this morning. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. friends are paying tribute to a skier who died in an avalanche in tahoe. he was caught in the snow thursday near alpine meadows ski resort. he lived in the sierra town of olympic valley. he was skiing with two friends when an avalanche sent him tumbling 300 feet down the

mountain. >> fun-loving. when asked what was a practice like, it's perfect, saying imagine someone reaching down your throat and trying to pull out your lungs that. showed his work ethics. >> his friends were not hurt in the slide. this weekend skiers are warned about dangerous conditions with red flag areas and shallow snowpacks. two fund-raisers will be held in san jose this weekend for the family of a man killed in a birthday party last sunday. 33-year-old anthony was shot and killed during a brawl at a mexican restaurant and bar. the mercury news reports the argument was over a woman and escalated into a fight involving more than 30 people. there's a fund-raiser at the bible church at 4:00 this afternoon. there's also a car wash at 9 tomorrow morning on north 27th street. so the students at city college in san francisco are learning a painful economics lesson. one month into the semester and

the school has already cut 70 classes, ranging from computer courses to english as a second language. administrators say they only recently learned the state was cutting their budget by another $3.6 million on top of the 14 million earlier this year. students say it is almost unheard of that courses are dropped once they begin. >> the teacher came and and said the class got cancelled. so every -- every student, every staff is nervous right now, because we don't know what is going to happen more. >> the cancelled classes mean a lot of jobs and income for teachers. many students are going to sacramento on monday to join a statewide protest against public education cuts. despite protests from parents and students, the castro valley school district will go ahead with layoffs and larger class sizes. the district faces a deficit of $5 million. parents want the board to tap

floor of the operating room where all of this will take place a short time from now. this is the fourth floor of kaiser in san francisco. and off in the distance you can see physicians, nurses, staff members, who are getting ready to perform 33 surgeries for people who can't otherwise afford them. it's part of a program kaiser has been doing for nearly 20 years. we have some video from the operating room from this program, same program called operation access, from a few years pack. the goal is to help low income and uninsured people in the community gain access to some potentially life-saving surgeries. this morning doctors will be performing colonoscopies, hernia surgeries, foot surgeries, cataract surgeries, same-day procedures where patients can come in in the morning, get the surgery done, and go home the same night. we talked to one patient in the prep room getting ready for a hernia surgery, and he said he got injured about a year ago and doesn't have insurance and was worried he would never get

several descriptions of the car and are working to track down the gunmen. oakland police have released the pictures of three occupy protestors accused of a hate crime. they are accused of demonstrating at wells fargo bank on piedmont avenue two weeks ago. a woman criticized the protestors from across the street and police say the occupiers then surrounded the victim, took her wallet, yanked a president obama pin from her clothing, and insulted her perceived sexuality. police are seeking other suspects in the case. davis was arraigned yesterday while the two other head to court on monday. oakland police chief jordan admits to juggling resources to better implement mayor jean quan's crimefighting initiative. he wrote a letter to the community and posted it on the police department website. some residents complained officers specifically hired for a taxpayer mandated community policing program were shifted

snow this winter, 66 teams racing through the snow. two people onboard a historic military helicopter were able to walk away after crashing into the ground. the crash was caught on tape because it happened on the set of a korean tv show in arizona. the two men inside the helicopter were filming a car on the ground as part of a stunt when there was some kind of mechanical failure. police say the men were saved because they were wearing helmets and were strapped in with harnesses. searching future survivors, more than 30 people are dead after a series of powerful storms in several states. we'll have a live report from one of the hardest hit areas. plus it was killed during a fight in a san jose mexican restaurant last weekend. now the community is coming together to help his family. every day, an average of 5,000 people

the death toll continues to rise this morning after dozens of tornadoes hit states from the gulf coast to the great lakes. and welcome back to mornings on 2. just 10 minute ago it was announced the death toll now stands at 34 people, and the search for survivors is underway. reporter chris welch is live at one of the hardest hit areas in indiana with a live look at the damage. chris. >> reporter: good morning. that number continues to creep up throughout the day. now the state of indiana is -- sees just total devastation. we're in southern indiana, this is henryville high school, what

was henryville high school is now demolished. and you can see the cars overturned, you can see the damage this has done. 1400 students go to school here which is attached to the high school here, and they all made it out completely unharm. check this out. this is a school bus that was actually parked in the parking lot right in front of the high school. it's actually been -- blown across the street and into this little diner. it is -- fortunately did not have any students in it at the time. but these winds were so powerful, it blew the body of the bus right off the chassis. now, as i mentioned, the students were lucky. not everyone in the area was that lucky. >> the stories will be told for a long time. >> felt like a freight train coming through. >> from tennessee to alabama, to right here in indiana, towns woke up saturday to a dramaticically different landscape than the day before. one altered by a widespread tornado outbreak. >> temperatures before the

tornado were fluctuating 20 degrees, and changed in a split of a second, and then the hail was probably baseball or tennis size. >> this round of tornadoes cops on the heels of another band of storms this week that devastated towns like harrisburg, illinois. one storm chaser says the outbreak so early in the season could be a warning of what is to come. >> it's telling you we're going have to a lot more outbreaks, only in peak season until may shoe this is just a precursor of what is coming. >> but here in henryville, they're likely not thinking that far ahead. instead, trying to comprehend how their lives drastically changed in just one day. >> i'm just thankful we're all -- survived this. like i said, material things can be replaced. the house can be replaced. we've got a place to stay. warmth, food, and we don't have to worry about that. >> materials can be replaced.

whoever shot a man at a bar last night. police say he had been arguing with at least one other person. no suspects identified, and there's no word on the victim's condition. two fund-raisers are planned in san jose this weekend to help pay funeral services for a man killed at a friend's party last sunday. 33-year-old anthony salazar was gunned down during a brawl in a restaurant. the argument was over a woman and had escalated into a fight involving more than 30 people. there's a fund raised at the sunrise bible church at 4:00 this afternoon. then there's also going to be a car wash at 9 tomorrow morning at valencia auto upholstery. tributes pour in for a skier killed in a 29 avalanche. 29-year-old bench bracket was caught in the snow thursday. he lived in the sierra town of olympic valley. he was skiing with two friends

when an avalanche sent him 300 feet down the mountain. >> sun loving, when asked what was a cross-country practice like, it's perfect, ben saying imagine someone reaping down your throat and trying too pull out your lungs. his two friends were not hurt in the slide. skiers in tahoe are warned this weekend about dangerous conditions with red flag areas and shallow snowpacks. hundreds of people gathered at camp pendleton to say good- bye to the six marines who died in a midair helicopter crash in arizona. the men were killed when two choppers crashed during a training mission on february 22nd. the victims included decorated marines and iraq and afghanistan war veterans. the cause of that crash is now under investigation. add an fbi tack force to the search team looking for more victims from the speed

freak killers. the fbi's evidence recovery team is now joining the case at the request of the san joaquin county sheriff. more than a thousand bone fragments have been found in calaveras county. one of the three bay area men who kidnapped a school bus full of children 36 years ago could soon be out of prison. a state appellate court ruled richard schoenfeld completed his sentence. he and his brother and frederick woods were convicted of ambushing the bus and holding the children and driver for five million dollars ransom. the victims escaped 24 hours later. the state parole board has until next month to appeal the court's decision. there are going to be no summer classes at solano community college this year. that's going to save more money to offer more choices to students during the fall semester. usually 4500 students take classes during the summer. school officials blame a lack of funding from the state.

and the budget ax is also falling on city college of san francisco. the school has cut about 70 classes ranging from computer courses to english as a second language. administrators say they only recently learned the state was cutting their budget by another $3.6 million on top of the $14 million earlier this academic year. students say it is almost unheard of that courses are dropped once they begin. >> the teacher came in and told us the class got cancelled. and that -- so every student, every staff is nervous right now, because we don't know what is going to happen more. >> the cancelled classes mean a loss of jobs and income for dozens of part-time teachers. many students are going to sacramento on monday to join a statewide protest against public education cuts. the city of san jose may have a balanced budget in the fiscal year that starts in july. city leaders say increased

outbreak. much of west liberty was destroyed. ten counties in kentucky are under a state of emergency. national guard troops are still searching the hardest hit areas, looking for more possible victims. residents who lost their homes are expressing grief. >> devastating. it's heart breaking. don't really know what to think, to tell you the truth. >> 34 people have now been killed around the country in yesterday's tornado outbreak. stay with ktvu mornings on 2. coming up at 9:30, we'll go live to indiana, where that state's governor is vowing to do everything he can to help rebuild storm-ravaged communities. people in the state of georgia are also waking up to severe damage from those deadly storms. these are pictures from paulding county, northwest of atlanta. the homes on the left of this street were completely ripped apart, while the homes on the right were spared. about 40 buildings were flattened in paulding county. the county's airport also sustained major damage. the winds were so powerful, they

bent the steel on some buildings. despite all the devastation, there were no injuries in that county. . and overnight news, a pedestrian fights for his life after a hit and run in san francisco. it happened just after 2:00 this morning near 16th street. police blocked off the sidewalk where the 60-year-old victim was hit. he was rushed to nearby san francisco general hospital in critical condition. witnesses describe the suspect's vehicle has a cream-colored 1970sle camino. police are searching for the gunman who opened fire at a san pablo community center around 10:00 last night. shots rang out at the montero community center. deputies combed the building and adjacent park looking for buildings. dozens of people are gathered for a meeting at the center last night. one man was wounded in the attack. no word on his condition or what led up to that shooting. also this morning, three people are recovering from

gunshot wounds after they were hit while playing dice on the street. police say a man in a car started shooting at a group of people throwing dice near the 2200 block of bonner street in berkeley last night. three men were hit. all three were transported to the hospital and they are expected to survive. officers say they do have several descriptions of the car and are working to track down the gunman. new this morning, doctors and nurses are volunteering their time for some free medical care in san francisco. these are not regular medical checkups. these doctors and nurses are in the operating room. >> reporter: that's right, claudine. they are in the operating room right now. we are on the fourth floor of kaiser hospital in san francisco. just down this hallway and around the corner, beyond the people you see there in their scrubs, that's where the operating room is located. that's where right now the first of 33 people are undergoing surgery for free. just in the last hour, we were allowed in the operating room.

let's show you video of that. these are free surgeries that are taking place as part of a program with kaiser hospital. they do it every year and it's called operation access. now, the goal is to provide surgeries to people without insurance, people who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford these procedures. the types of surgeries they are doing this morning, colonoscopies to detect colon cancer, foot surgery, hernia surgery, cataract surgery, same-day procedures where the patients can come in in the morning, get the procedure done, and be released the same day. now, we talked to one patient who was scheduled to go through hernia surgery this morning. he says he was injured a year ago in his job as a carpenter. he doesn't have health insurance and he was grateful doctors were going to fix his problem this morning. >> i was so excited. i was so happy. and i am just thankful, and i thank those people involved in giving a free operation. >> i think it's really unfortunate that we have a

the investigation is still ongoing. three occupy oakland protesters face robbery and hate crime charges. police say 32-year-old michael davis, 23-year-old nikita crawford and 24-year-old randolph wilkins were part of a group demonstrating at a wells fargo bank on piedmont avenue two weeks ago. a woman was criticizing protesters from across the street. officers say that's when the occupiers then surrounded the victim, took her wallet, yanked the president obama pin from her clothing and insulted her perceived sexuality. police are seeking other suspects in the case. davis was arraigned yesterday, while the other two head to court on monday. oakland police chief howard jordan admits to juggling resources to better implement mayor jean quan's 100-block crime fighting initiative. jordan wrote a letter to the community and posted it on the police department website. some residents have complained that officers specifically hired for taxpayer mandated policing program were shifted to other beats.

. >> i had about 40 students and staff in the core of the building when the tornado hit. everyone was safe. no one was injured. and it's just a blessing. we praise god. new this morning, an indiana school principal shares his story of survival, after riding out a tornado with his students. and daylight reveals the major damage left behind. welcome back to ktvu mornings on 2, everyone. a string of violent storms tore through the midwest and southeast, leaving behind a path of destruction. right now, the death toll is at 34, and that number has gone up just this morning. more on the devastation and what's next for the community in indiana. >> reporter: we heard from that school principal. this is his school right behind us. we're here in henryville, indiana, one of the hardest hit areas from these tornadoes. this is what was henryville high school. look at it now. it's obviously gone through some

pretty serious damage, almost essentially completely demolished. it's the high school and elementary school, both connected. about 1400 students total attend class there. all of them came out completely unharmed from this tornado. look at this, though. this schoolbus flew from the parking lot of that high school across the street into this little diner. now, thankfully, there were no students in the bus at the time, but had has caused quite a bit of damage. not only did it blow the bus across the street into the diner, but it blew the body of the bus off its own chassis. now, as i've already mentioned, students in the school and in this area, thankfully unharmed. that is not the case for others. the stories will be told for a long time. >> sounds like a freight train coming through. they mean it. >> reporter: from tennessee to alabama to right here in indiana. towns woke up saturday to a dramatically different landscape than the day before. one altered by a widespread

tornado outbreak. >> the temperatures fluctuate between 20 degrees, change in the split of a second. and then the hail was probably baseball or tennis size. >> reporter: this round of tornadoes comes on the heels of another band of storms this week that devastated towns like harrisburg, illinois. one storm chaser says the outbreak so early in the season could be a warning of what's to come. >> it's telling you that we're going to have a lot more active tornado outbreaks. we're not even in peak season until may, so this is just a precursor of what's coming. >> reporter: here in henryville, they are likely not thinking that far ahead, instead trying to comprehend how their lives drastically changed in just one day. >> i'm just thankful that we're all, we all survived this. like i said, material things can be replaced. the house can be replaced. we've got place to stay, you know, warmth, food, and we don't have to worry about that.

>> reporter: here it is, day two, trying to get a better idea of exactly what they are dealing with here. people are starting the initial process of putting their lives back together. you can already see power crews have been out in full force this morning, trying to restore all these downed power lines that have been out, and folks are starting to try and go through the rubble as well, sifting through some of what some of the devastation that's left here. this was an auto repair shop, some folks trying to recover what they can, trying to find a few things, but one thing for sure, this cleanup will take quite sometime. claudine? >> obviously a big mess out there that stretches for a long way. are they putting a priority obviously on the searches first, but then how has communication been in getting everyone organized that wants to help? >> reporter: well, that's a good point we should get across. the searches are not over yet. the search and rescue efforts continued through the night. second round of searches continue now. they have not given up hope that

anaheim police -- that's not the video right there. but anaheim police told us there was a suspicious item in a tree near the ticket booths. now, a ktvu viewer tipped us on the story by contacting us through facebook. that viewer says her daughter is at disneyland right now and sounded like someone tried to get something through security and then tossed it up into that tree. the park is not open yet, but police say so far, no one has been hurt. 13 people are hurt this morning after a shooting at a suburban phoenix nightclub overnight. police are looking for two young men after the shooting inside a club near the arizona state university campus. witnesses told police there had been some sort of altercation right before that shooting. a rap concert was under way when the gunfire broke out. at least two of the injured are in serious condition. one of the victims of the ohio high school shooting masacre will be laid to rest today. the family of danny parmertor held a visitation yesterday evening for the 16-year-old. the funeral is this morning. danny is one of three students

killed in a shooting at chardon high school on monday. suspected 17-year-old shooter tj lane has been charged with three counts of murder. new this morning, several doctors and nurses are working for free today. they are helping out dozens of people in san francisco. coming up at 9:45, we'll have a live report on what's happening today and the program making it all possible. one of three bay area men who kidnapped a schoolbus full of children 36 years ago could soon be released from prison, and this could happen as soon as may. a state appellate court ruled richard schoenfeld has completed liss sentence. shown held and his brother and another man were convicted of ambushing a -- demanding a $5 million ransom. the victims escaped 24 hours later. the state parole board could appeal the court's decision. well, the search for victims of the speed freak killers is getting additional manpower.

the fbi's evidence recovery team is joining the case. that's after the san joaquin county sheriff asked for help. more than 1000 bone fragments have been found at sites in san joaquin and calaveras county. the goal is to recover all the victims. san francisco police department is being called a hero for saving his neighbor's baby. robert cathy sprang into action outside his home in tracy just a few days ago, when his neighbor's child, 15-month-old sayid anwar slipped through a sliding glass door someone had left open and fell into his family's koi pond. when the baby's father found his son, he found no pulse. >> i just grabbed him and ran outside on the street and screaming my lungs out for help. >> i heard somebody come outside of their house and was screaming, help me, help me! >> robert cathy says he knew cpr and as zab called 911, cathy started chest compressions until suddenly sayid started breathing

again. first responders said that if cathy had not performed cpr, sayid most likely would have died. people living near golden gate park are complaining about the increase of homeless people loitering around a mcdonald's restaurant. workers at the stanton street mcdonald's say they have had to call police about 300 times in just the past few months. residents say they feel unsafe with all the homeless people panhandling there and bringing their dogs into that restaurant. >> i've been approached at 6:00 in the morning with people asking me if i want to buy drugs when i'm out walking my dog. >> they have stepped up patrols and definitely blame the increase of homeless activity on the recent warm weather and the dismantling of occupy san francisco. dueling protests over foi gras in san francisco. a warning, some of this video you may find disturbing. alexander's steakhouse hosted a six-course foi gras meal last night ahead of california's ban on the food which will start in july. the feast was a fund-raiser for the effort to overturn the ban.

in critical condition. investigators are looking for a cream colored 1970s el camino. new this morning, doctors and nurses in san francisco are volunteering their time today for free surgeries. ktvu entered the operating room and we have more now. >> reporter: we are on the fourth floor of kaiser hospital in san francisco. behind us, down this hallway, beyond all the doctors and nurses you see there with their scrubs is the operating room on this floor. that's where right now the first of 33 people are undergoing surgery for free. now, earlier this morning, we were allowed into one of the operating rooms to film a hernia surgery. we'll have more on the patient on the operating table in just a second. but first, we want to tell you that these free surgeries are part of a program called operation access. it's a nonprofit group that coordinates with bay area hospitals and their goal is to provide surgeries for people without insurance who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford these

procedures. now, the types of surgeries they do, colonoscopies to detect colon cancer, foot surgeries, cataract surgeries. this video of the operating room we were in earlier this morning is of a hernia surgery. we talked to the man on the operating table, the patient you're seeing here. he explained he worked as a carpenter, got injured a year ago and didn't have health insurance to cover the costs of his hernia surgery. he said he was very grateful doctors were able to fix his problem today. >> so happy and i just thank god for that. >> they are absolutely grateful and they realize that, you know, without this operation, they couldn't work and they couldn't continue doing what they normally would be able to do. so it makes them feel good and makes us feel good that they are able to get back to being working member and contributing member of our society. >> reporter: now, patients are referred to this program from different community health clinics and they do have to meet certain criteria to qualify for the surgeries. mainly, they have to not have

access, or not be able to afford health insurance. there are more than a hundred doctors, nurses, volunteers, staff members making this process possible here at kaiser hospital. again, that group, nonprofit group, operation access, does coordinate with a variety of bay area hospitals across six counties in the bay area to make this happen for people. live in san francisco, ktvu channel 2news. . well, san jose police are looking for whoever shot a man in a bar. the man was shot just before 8:30 last night at a bar on 13th and mission streets. police say he had been arguing with one other person. no suspects have been identified and no word on the victim's condition. the legal battle regarding a witness in the domestic violence trial of the san francisco sheriff will continue. ktvu was the only news crew to try and question christina florez as she left san francisco's hall of justice yesterday. florez is sheriff ross mirkarimi's ex-girlfriend. last january, she accused mirkarimi of physically hurting her during their relationship.

mirkarimi's defense team is fighting to keep her off the witness stand. >> if it comes in, that kind of evidence tends to be so powerful because it says, look, if he did it once before, he's probably guilty this time. >> the judge did not make a decision on florez appearing as a witness. instead, another hearing in his closed chambers will take place on monday afternoon. jury selection in the case is also scheduled to start on monday. for the first time in almost 40 years, solano community college will not hold a summer session this year. the school says state funding cutbacks are forcing it to make that decision. college officials say they will be able to save enough money so that they can offer more class choices to students during the fall and spring semesters. registration for summer classes hasn't started. students at city college of san francisco are also learning a painful economics lesson. one month into the semester, the school has cut about 70 classes, ranging from computer courses to english as a second language. administrators say they only recently learned the state was cutting their budget by another

$3.6 million, on top of the 14 million cut earlier this academic year. students say it's almost unheard of that courses are dropped once they begin. >> the teacher came in and told us the class got canceled. and so every student, every staff is nervous right now, because we don't know what's going to happen. >> the canceled classes mean a loss of jobs and income for dozens of part-time teachers. many students are going to sacramento on monday to join a state-wide protest against public education cuts. apple says it is responsible for creating more than a half million jobs in the united states. the company says more than half of those were directly created by apple from its own workers to employees of other companies, including ups and fedex workers who deliver apple products to customers. apple says another 210,000 are independent app developers who

create apps for the iphone and ipad. apple has been criticized for relying on asian contractors to make its electronic devices. radio talk show host rush limbaugh is getting a powerful reaction to his comments about a georgetown university law student. two companies are pulling all of their advertising from his programs. select comfort, which advertises the sleep number bed, says it is going to suspend all advertising after his commentary that, quote, does not align with our values. another mattress company, california-based sleep train, also announced it would pull its ad because of community feedback. the backlash is after sandra flock testified before a congressional committee about her views on the high cost of contraception. she said she favored having insurance companies pay for it. >> without insurance coverage, contraception, as you know, can cost a woman over $3000 during lawsuit. >> that makes her a slut, right? makes her a prostitute. she wants to be paid to have

lower deck. traffic moving along just fine. and we're taking a look at the chp information site this morning. no major problems to report for you. today is the first town hall meeting to discuss fran's muni's finances. the transit agency faces a budget deficit of nearly $20 million and it's considering several changes to help close that gap. one suggestion is to boost cash fares by 25 cents. other ideas are to start charging for parking meters on sunday, or extending hours on other days. muni could also add new metered parking spaces. today's meeting is set for muni headquarters at one south van ness avenue. muni is planning on holding at least three more meetings. riding on bart could soon cost more. bart will hold its own public meetings this month to discuss three plans that would raise an extra $5 million a year. the first would add a dime to all rides under the bay. the second is to raise the price
