. a wakeup call for the bay area this morning. two earthquakes, that is our top story. i'm tori campbell. we're now learning that two quakes shook the beat area this morning almost simultaneously. the u.s. gentlemen loll survey says they hit eight seconds apart at 5:33 a.m. on the hayward fault in el

cerrito. the first was a 2.9 magnitude, the larger 4.0 magnitude earthquake immediately followed. sense then the u.s. geological survey has reported two smaller aftershocks. we're live from a golf course that is the epicenter of these quakes. >> reporter: we're at the mira vesta country club which sits on top of the hill in el cerrito over looking the bay. the earthquake this morning originatedded 5 1/2 miles under the ground we are standing on. they have a sentor here. tucked away in the back room of a maintenance building is a black box with blinking lights. it's a sentor for the u.s. geological survey. this morning at 5:30 it picked up two back-to-back earthquakes. >> it was a small shake, it stopped for a second, then a stronger shake after that. >> it felt different from the past two that happened in october, i think. this one felt like the furniture was swaying. >> the quake struck eight

seconds apart, the first of a 2.9, the second a 4.0 magnitude earthquake. the country club sits on top of the hayward fault. >> we've had a few over the last couple months or so. it knock add few things off the shelves. >> there were no reports of any significant damage. is it a sign of more activity to come from the hayward fault? >> we see little earthquakes like this occurring. there is always cay chance that big earthquake could follow. >> there's a 30% chance a 7.0 quake will strike on the hayward fault sometime in the next 30 years fu. break those numbers down, -- >> it's approximately 1% chance a year of getting a magnitude 7- type earthquake. the probability is very low. it's not zero. >> reporter: that's why it's always a good idea to be prepared and have your family's earthquake kit ready. the last time there was a 7.0 quake on the hayward fault was in 1868. back to you.

>> thank you. more details on this earthquakes, bart temporarily stopped service for track inspection as it usually does following a moderate sized quake. trains were held at stations for about ten minutes after the first quake. service resumed a short time later. the quake's epicenter along the hayward fault is very close to cal's memorial stadium. it's being renovated to make it seismically safe. there was word the project would be inspected today. we have not heard of they damage or danger there. more about the hayward fault itself, a u.s. berkeley seismologist told us the part of the hayward fault that shook this morning has seen 18 quakes around magnitude 2 in the past 40 years. the previous 4.0 quake in that area was in 1994. many experts consider the hayward fault the most dangerous one in the bay area because there is so much urban development around it. approximately 2 million people

obama. >> he's failed with regard to our jobs. he's failed with regards to the definite si. he's failed to bring americans together, to bring washington together. he is out of ideas. he is out of excuses. in 2012 we got to make sure he's out of office. >> rick santorum also campaigned in ohio today at a rally in miamisburg. he said he is someone with a different vision for america than mitt romney. >> someone who is willing to go out and talk about all the issues that are confronting this country. all of the issues, not just how we'll manage the economy better. this country is more than just the economy. >> a new poll shows mitt romney has gained momentum over rick santorum in ohio. mitt romney leads rick santorum 34% to 31%. it does represent a ten-point shift from last week when rick santorum had a comfortable lead.

a total of 419 delegates are up for grabs in ten states tomorrow. the lion's share is in georgia with 76. ohio has 63. tennessee has 55, virginia 46, oklahoma 40. massachusetts has 38. idaho has 32. north dakota 28, alaska 24, and vermont has 17. president barack obama today welcomed the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu to the white house. both leaders vowed to block iran's development of nuclear arms even if it means the use of force. >> even as we will continue on the diplomatic front, we will continue to tighten pressure when it comes to sanctions. i reserve all options. >> israel has the right, the sovereign right to make its own decisions. i believe that's why you appreciate, mr. president, that israel must reserve the right to defend itself. >> president barack obama said

he prefers to solve the issues with iran diplomatically. he promised that the u.s. will always have israel's back. mr. obama and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu will hold private meetings today. while israel's prime minister is in washington, d.c. today, the country's president is near the bait area. this is the first time a sitting president of israel has paid this area a visit. we're live from san jose to explain what mr. perez is doing here. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. president perez has just wrapped up a tour of this ibm facility in san jose. he's looking at all the technology companies. this is one of many stops he'll make in silicon valley this week. we have this video of the israeli president inside ibm getting explanations from employees here. he's here on a four-day visit to the bay area pushing for the expansion of israeli tech startups back home. he will drop by several other

giants like google and facebook. at facebook he will do a leave streaming interview on the site. that will happen tomorrow. this morning during the tour, he praised the concept of facebook. >> facebook introduced the deepest social change, more than political policies. it doesn't have a country. it doesn't have an army. it doesn't have a fortune. it was an idea, that's it. look what he did. changed the world. >> reporter: not all of his stops will be in silicon valley. tomorrow night he will give a speech at the temple emmanuel in san francisco. this is the first time an incumbent israeli president has visited the bay area. security will be very tight at the san francisco synagogue. later tonight he will meet with the heads of some major tech companies in the south bay and he's here in town through thursday. back to you.

>> thank you. some of the major supporters of the first recall oakland mayor jean kwan announced they're dropping out of the petition drive. they still support a second better funded recall effort. the man who started the first of two separate recall campaigns vowed to carry on even if some of his principle backers are backing out. i feel this is a really good way to raise awareness about it and try to make a difference. >> thousands of bay area students have been on the move and converging in one particular place. the bay area weather is cooling down. we may see rain. rosemary orozco will have details just ahead. food going to waste, our cameras were there as a bay area store had to dump most of its inventory.

hit areas. 39 people were killed including a 15-month-old toddler who was taken off life support yesterday. her father, mother and two siblings were also killed. 42 tore torse have -- tornadoes have touched down since last week in ten states. thousands of college students and faculty throughout california are rallying in front of the state capitol. they want cuts to education funding to stop. we're live from the newsroom with more. >> reporter: they're calling it a march in march. occupy the capitol. students, teachers and professors calling for a change in education. the group hit the streets of sacramento protesting continued budget cuts to education. they say the cuts have resulted in higher tuition costs making it harder for students to finish college.

people rallied for two hours angry that california now ranks last among states in funding education scaring off high school graduates. >> they don't want to increase tuition like -- it's better to keep it low so everybody can go to college. >> how is it that we're paying more and get less? it's beyond me. it's really difficult for us today. >> this is in -- one student told us she was upset that her summer school had been cut. >> if you have to take strain year to graduate, the chances of you staying in school go way down. i think that would be humiliating to me. >> i think it's really unfair, the tuition hikes and also how education is becoming a privilege and not a right for the 1%. >> students say the golden state has failed to develop policies or a vision that will

allow it to compete nationally and internationally when it comes to education. back to you. the east bay women's conference is underway today in san ramon. the event's headline speakers are gloria steinem and alice waters. the event runs until 5:30. it's sold out. the walnut creek chamber of commerce is already taking names for next year's conference. jade hernandez is at the conference and will have a live report at 6:00. a high speed police chase in oakland ended with the suspect's car facing on coming traffic. the chp says the suspects carjacked the suv around 2:00 a.m. police chased them on to i-880 near the embarcadero. then the car headed north in

the southbound lanes. the suspects eventually jumped out and tried to run away. police caught them and recovered a backpack filled with stolen items. oakland police want to determine the cause of an early morning crash. it happened around 3:00 a.m. it the broadway near 21st street. a van flipped over and skidded several feet in front of the historic paramount theater. the female driver told police she lost control of her van when another vehicle swerved into her lane. investigators are looking for witnesses who could possibly back up her story. berkeley police are trying to find out if two weekend shootings blocks away from each other are connected. the first happened friday night at bonner and alston way. the second happened early yesterday morning at 7th street near addison. police say in that second shooting someone opened fire from a distance and hit three young men. investigators are calling the first shooting a drive-by shooting.

>> they got to be able to do more within the community instead of just pointing the finger and having the blame game. anyone can hire more officers and put them on the street. >> all the victims are expected to be ok. deadly fighting in yemen has claimed more than 100 lives. 78 yemeni troops died yesterday after clashing with al-qaeda militants. 55 others have been taken prisoner. after taking the troops into custody, al-qaeda militants paraded them through the streets of a small yemeni town. arizona senator john mccain this morning is calling for the united states to lead an international effort to begin air strikes on syria. in syria the rebels there say they have not received any help or weapons from any country, not even their arab neighbors. saudi arabia in particular has advocated arming the rebels but

there are concerns among some arab countries about the weapons falling into the wrong hands, such as elements of al- qaeda. pg&e is working to are repair a gas leak in contra costa county. it happened at clayton road in concord. a resident reported anoder of natural gas this morning. some parents were concerned because there is a day care center in that neighborhood. pg&e discovered an underground gas leak. crews are working to repair it. a grocery store in san mateo was forced to toss out thousands of pounds of food products this morning. the refrigeration system at the smart and final on south norfolk street stopped working. shoppers were greeted with a sign on the front door informing them that the deli and freezer cooling systems were broken and foods in that section were not available for sale.

only area. opponents argue the dogs only area would destroy wildlife and plants and pollute a nearby reservoir. identity theft is more common in contra costa county. the san ramon exphes reports police in danville and san ramon are responding to between five and 15 reports of identity theft in any given week. many of those calls include reports of credit card fraud. part of the increase may be because california's penal code has been expanded in recent years to include a wider range of crimes. the punishment for these crimes is rather light. tomorrow in oakland bart will hold its first community meeting about possible fare hikes. bart says it needs to raise an extra $5 million a year. now it wants feedback from commuters on ways to do that. one plan would add a dime to all rides through the transbay tube. another plan would increase all ticket prices more than 1%.

china has lowered its annual growth rate. the nasdaq is down 21. we have developing news to report now in the domestic abuse trial of san francisco sheriff ross mirkirimi. his attorneys filed papers today requesting a change of venue for the trial. this comes on the same day as cell key court proceedings are taking place. jury selection began this morning. the judge also heard a defense appeal on whether a video of ross mirkirimi's wife displaying a bruise should be admitted as evidence. a hearing is set today to decide whether an ex-girlfriend of the sheriff may testify in the case. the protect coyt tower committee invited history lovers to a special celebration of the artist who painted the tower's murals. the group arranged the even to build support for its june ballot measure. tonight at 5:00, after the
