our top story, the eyes of the tech world are on apple today as the company unveils its newest must-have gadget. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. with much fanfare, apple unveiled its latest ipad this morning in san francisco. claudine wong is live from the city to let us know some of the new features and when it's available.

>> reporter: good afternoon. we thought it might be called the ipad 3 or ipad hd. it's being called the ipad. it's available to be ordered now. you can have it by next week. c.e.o. tim cook spent part of the morning in san francisco inculling the android market and all the other tablets out there. then he said this. >> everyone's been wondering who will come out with a product that's more amazing than the ipad 2 with its big beautiful 9.6-inch screen, super fast a5 chip, all day battery life and elegant design. everybody has been wondering this. well, stop wondering. we are. [applause] >> today we're announcing the new ipad. >> reporter: so what does the new ipad actually do? obviously there has been lots

of rumors. it has a retina display like on the iphone 4 where if you hold it 15 inches or less away from your eye, your eye cannot discern individual pixels. this has higher screen resolution than an x box 360 and comes with quad graphics. it's going to process faster and download faster according to apple. you won't have a lot of that buffering that makes users so craze each it will have voice dictation and can serve as your own personal hot spot. ipad, apple says, is reinventing portable computing. >> we're talking about a world for your new devices, the devices you use the most need to be more portable, more personal, and dramatically easier to use than any pc has ever been.

fairfield and napa, 25-26 miles an hour. oakland hills at had 24, san jose 23. with a change in the wind direction, we have a big temperature warm-up. >> thank you. sunnyvale confirmed that the deaths of a mother and her 22-year-old son was a murder- suicide. police were called to the home on nectar een avenue at 7:45 last night by the woman's husband. he had just come home from his job as park ranger and found the bodies. neighbors identified them as liz lie and lester hodges and their autistic son george. >> my heart goes out to them. they're such nice people. you wouldn't want better neighbors. they're so sweet. i'm stunned, very stunned. >> neighbors placed flowers in front of the home today. they say the father works odd hours and the mother spent a lot of time caring for the son.

police say he also suffered medical problems. employees at a concord convenience store dealing with the trauma of a violent take over robbery. it happened at 7:30 p.m. last night at the super liquor and food at 1511 monument boulevard. these are surveillance photos showing the robbery in progress. police say the mean would robbed several customers, took cash, liquor and alcohol from the store and hit one clerk on the head with a gun. another clerk spoke to one of our reporters today but did not want her face shown. >> he was pretty scared because he thought he was gonna die when he saw the gun. this is the second time it happened to him. he was pretty scared. >> the clerk will be ok. he is planning on taking a few days off. this is the second time this store has been robbed in the last three weeks. this morning a hayward man accepted a plea deal in a du inaccident that injure add 9- year-old boy in san francisco.

andrew vargas was behind the wheel in the accident outside tap tap last fall. the young victim was in fung from philadelphia with his family and had just come out of a giants game. >> we are very, very sorry for what has happened to mr. white's family, for ryan white. we think the most important thing is his full recovery now. >> vargas will be sentenced on march 21st. jury selection is continuing today in the domestic violence trial against san francisco sheriff ross mirkirimi. finding an impartial jury is proving to be quite difficult. 150 potential jurors are being

added to the jury pool today. already more than 200 potential jurors have been dismissed in the last few days. a judge has now considering a request by ross mirkirimi's attorney to move the trial out of san francisco. one of the most vocal critics of oakland mayor jean quan says he is willing to challenge her in a potential recall election. city councilman ignaci occasion dela forks e,nte says he will challenge her if it makes it to the ballot. recall organizers have until may 14th to gathert 20,000 signatures needed to qualify a recall for the november ballot. israeli president shimon peres is wrapping up his visit to the bay area today. he opened a conference an hour ago with some high-tech industry he leaders in silicon valley. we're live from the san francisco design center where the conference is taking place.

>> reporter: the israeli president just took the stage at the san francisco design center a few minutes ago. if you look behind me, you can see a massive police presence around the area. when he arrived, he made quite an entrance. you can see the 88-year-old israeli leader getting a ride in on a bulletproof electric vehicle. he then hopped off and took a tour of several booths asking tech companies to explain their products. that was pretty exciting for these young business owners. >> it's great. he's super engaging, came by very relaxed, took a full demo through our application. >> reporter: israeli president shimon peres is on stage right now. you can see the event streaming him live as we speak. the annual conference attracts thousands of high-tech entrepreneurs are investors and tech experts. the purpose is to promote and

president barack obama today visited yet another state that could be crucial in the november election pushing his energy agenda. the president toured daimler truck plant in mount holly, north carolina. there he talked about raising mileage standards for cars and trucks and making it easier for local governments to adopt vehicles that use alternative fuels. >> if you make a commitment to buy more advanced vehicles for your community, whether they run on electricity or bayou fuels or natural gas, we'll help you cut through the red tape and build fueling stations nearby. >> in 2008 mr. obama became the first democrat to carry north carolina in a presidential election since jimmy carter in 1976. mr. obama won the state narrowly. republican front-runner mitt romney bolstered his delegate count yesterday in the super tuesday presidential primaries. he still does not have enough

delegates to seal the nomination. he won six of the ten seat sat super tuesday states. rick santorum won three states. newt gingrich won his home state of georgia. ron paul failed to come in first in a single state. these are pictures of mitt romney's motorcade leaving the marriott hotel in the boston suburbs. he had just given an interview with cnbc. last night both mitt romney and rick santorum celebrated their victories. >> we're counting up the delegates for the convention. it looks good. we're counting down the days until november. >> we went up against northerly us odds, not just here in ohio where who knows how much we were out spent, but in every state. >> rick santorum was scheduled to campaign in kansas today. newt gingrich planned to be in

mass he have flames erupted in florida after a freight train and a tanker truck collided. this happened earlier this morning in tampa. witnesses say the tanker truck drove right into the path of the train. the driver is presumed dead. no one on the train was hurt. smoke could be seen miles away. back here, san francisco firefighters needed special equipment to fight an early morning dumpster fire. the flames started around 4:30 a.m. behind office depot on 15 the street and bryant. to get to the flames, firefighters had to use a diamond saw. that's a circular saw with diamonds on the blade to cut through hard material. crews contained the fire to the dumpster. san francisco police are asking for help finding a missing 82-year-old man who

suffers from alzheimer's. jose aderis was last seen leaving his home on santa rosa avenue around 5:30 monday night. he is known to frequent mission street between 16th and 24th. he is 5'7", 170 pounds. if you have any information, call san francisco police. richmond police have identified a patient they found more than a week ago. police found this man at the north richmond walgreens store twelve days ago. when they found him they couldn't identify him. after we aired this story last night, a board and care facility called police and identified him as raymond washington. governor jerry brown is pushing back against two tax proposals that could compete with his own tax measure on the november ballot. brown says his plan to increase the state sales tax is the only one that would stop the state from having budget shortfalls

every year. two other groups are trying to get their own plans on the november ballot. one is known as the millionaire's tax and would hit wealthy californians. brown doesn't like that plan because the money would be earmarked limiting how the state could use the money. defense secretary leon panetta this morning explained why the u.s. has not yet acted militarily in syria the way it did in libya. he appeared before the senate armed services committee where republican john mccain has push ford u.s. military action against syria where the government troops have killed thousands of people. leon panetta says the u.s. might have to act alone if it decides to help protect the syrian rebels. >> although there has been widespread support in the security counsel anytime arab league for military intervention in libya, no such consensus currently exists with regards to syria. >> mccain says the u.s. arming the syrian rebels is not enough to stop the slaughter.

he says that requires air strikes. in iraq four people are dead after two car bombings in baghdad. they happened this morning in a sunni muslim nard neighborhood. two other explosions in a disee in the country's north killed 14 people. reports say a car exploded outside a restaurant. attacks have increased in iraq since american troops left at the end of last year. we have clear skies across the entire bay area with the winds moving in yesterday mixing things up. we have excellent visibility. today will be warmer than yesterday and the beginning of another minor warming trend. right now, most areas are in the 50s to around 60 degrees. santa rosa 61. fairfield is breezy with a current gust of up to 31 miles an hour. san jose right around 56 miles an hour. you can see one weather system moving out of northern

california heading into nevada. not much happening right now as high pressure is in control of our weather. we'll have a few dry days. in the pacific on the satellite, another system developing out here. our next chance for rain moves in for the second half the weekend favoring the north bay. between now and then especially for tomorrow and also into friday, temperatures back up into the upper 60s to 70 degrees. here's our cloud and rainfall forecast model. we have lots of sun today and tomorrow. this is thursday afternoon. you will notice where the rain is going. it's heading up to our north toward the pacific northwest. by friday still sunshine, a few high clouds could clip the bay area. saturday afternoon more cloud cover and then here's that rain chance. this approaches the region sunday afternoon especially up in the north bay and also into

sunday night. we could have changes for the second half of the weekend. for today 3:00 lots of sunshine, temperatures in the upper 50s to 60s. by 6:00 clear and cool, 50s. then we'll be cooling off this evening. by 9:00 back to the 40s to 50 degrees. overnight coolest locations inland valleys back to the 30s. highs this afternoon in the upper 50s to upper 60s. about eight degrees warmer than most spots. thursday a chilly start, temperatures recover nicely in the afternoon. more sunshine friday. some extra clouds. for the weekend it will start off dry. we could be tracking rain by sunday. it has been a roller coaster ride in temperatures. last sunday we were in the 70s are yesterday 50s. >> thank you.

right now cast and cruset popular tv show "alcatraz" is filming in san francisco. they're set up on bay street filming there and near larken street. this is video from earlier this morning. tomorrow crews will move to taylor street. the crew will recreate a car chase originally seen in the 1968 movie "bullet." you can watch the show "alcatraz" right here at 9:00 p.m. on mondays. some bay area elementary school students got to go on an exciting field trip in their own backyard. the coast guard landed a helicopter in a field at bunker elementary school in newark this morning. members of every class at the school got to tour the chopper. they heard from crew members about the importance of math and science education. >> we do a lot of exciting things here in newark unified school district. we're very excited about the opportunities that we're providing for our students, presenting a world class

we told you early about the unveiling of the new ipad in san francisco. shares of apple have been going up all morning. they've dipped briefly into negative territory. this is a familiar pattern established at previous launches. apple stock at $527, down about a half percent. the dow is up 91, nasdaq up 23, s & p up nine. the number of people hired to work in the private sector went up in february. a new report from adp says companies hired 216,000 new workers last month. most of the growth was in service industries and small businesses. the monthly jobs report from the u.s. labor department comes out friday. los altos based netflix could expand its movie service

to some cable systems. reuters says the cable operators would include netflix among their premium offerings. reuters says the first partnership with a cable company could come by the end of this year. it was an emotional farewell for nfl superstar peyton manning today. the indianapolis colts officially released him one day before they'd have to pay him a $28 million bonus. manning and team owner appeared together for the announcement. >> this town and this team means so much to me. it truly has been a honor to play in indianapolis. i do love it here. i love the fans. i will always enjoy having played for such a great team. >> manning's career with the colts ran 14 years and includes
