today to hear their son plead guilty to driving under the influence and inflicting great bodily injury to ryan white. >> andrew felt terrible about his actions. >> reporter: he had no prior criminal record. under the plea deal he will be faced on five year's probation and serve out a year-long jail sentence. he must have dwi counseling and perform 100 hours of community service. and will have one strike under california's three strikes law and will pay restitution to his victims. prosecutors tell us ryan white's family approved the deal, saying that ryan white's family approved the deal, apologizing for the actions. >> they are not comfortable reading the letter at some point in time, i am sure that they will. >> we are very, very sorry for what happened to mr. white's family. for ryan white. >> reporter: and again another look at the video of vargas' truck hitting the cab.

the formal sentencing is for march 21. prosecutors say ryan white is temporarily back in school but is still recovering from his injuries, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 action news. and the process of picking a jury today continued today against the sheriff, mirkarimi. 100 people came in to fill out questionnaires of potential jurors, after 200 of them were dismissed over the weekend. prosecutors are still fighting with the wife over video showing bruises on her arm, and whether that can be used as evidence. and police investigating a murder-suicide case in which a mother is believed to have killed her adult son. rita williams has more on what drove the mother to the breaking point, and why they say this didn't have to happen. >> reporter: gasia mikaelian, police say what happened to this recently updated home just off highway 85 was a tragedy.

>> the mother shot the 22-year- old son, and then shot herself. >> reporter: authorities say lester hodgins came home from his job as a ranger with the city of palo alto about 7:45 last night, to find the bodies of his wife, elizabeth and his autistic son, george. >> she was just over the edge, she said i can't do this anymore. i just can't do it. i need help. >> reporter: next door neighbors say elizabeth hodgins seemed overwhelmed now that her son was no longer in school. and they say they may have missed signs about what was to come, that at a garage sale last weekend, she parted with her mother's skirt and antique silver tea set. >> she was such a wonderful person and sacrificed so much for her son. because she took care of him 24- 7. >> reporter: folks here at parents helping parents in san jose say hodges used to work here, and they only wished she

unfairly targeting the latino residents. and now to 2012, the republican candidates for president are regrouping for the next primary push. frontrunner mitt romney won six of the amounts in the contest. he conducted primary interviews. with his big super tuesday win, mitt romney has 400 delegates, 1144, santorum, 176, newt gingrich, 105, and ron paul has 47. and speaking of newt gingrich, he is looking at the campaign strategy after winning his home state of georgia. today he says he is canceling kansas, to shore up support in the south. they rallied supporters in montgomery, alabama today. they told the crowd it would be impossible for a moderate republican to win in november. >> we tried it in 1996, and it didn't work. we tried it in 2008, and it

didn't work. you can't have somebody -- where the gap between mitt romney-care and obama care is so narrow that you can't figure out what the debate is. >> newt gingrich accused president obama of spending too much time as a candidate and not enough time doing his job as president. coming up at 5:30, the number two candidate and where he moved on to today. and israel's president continuing the bay area trip this evening with an event at google headquarters in mountain view. ken pritchett has more on the impact that perez's visit has been having. >> reporter: gasia mikaelian, about 15 minutes ago, there you can see the community service office as well as the highway patrol, blocking off the theater parkway, leading to google headquarters. we were kept away from it as the israel president was touring it. he was meeting for a private meeting. mr. perez is wrapping up a trip to the bay area, heavily

focused on technology. the heavily police and secret service events kept the police media away from the headquarters where they went through the motor cade. he rode in on what looked like a high tech golf mccarthy cart, opening the launch. they showed off the digital inventions as they look at venture capitalism. during his four day trip to the bay area, mr. perez has stressed the importance of the technology in the area, where their technology has faced exports. he isthroughout the event, mr. perez again spoke of tensions with iran, calling that country the center of terrorism, and talked about the options off

the table with regard to iran's nuclear program. the trip to google by the israel president was scheduled to be his final event in the bay area. but it was scheduled for tomorrow, so it has been moved up to today. so at this point it is not clear if this was the israeli president's final day, which would mark the end of the first trip to the area. ken pritchett channel 2 action news. and republicans in congress today accused president obama of not doing enough to deal with high gas prices because he wants to push an agenda of alternative energy. they pointed to the news conference yesterday in which mr. obama left off a question about high gas prices. >> the president was asked yesterday, well i don't want high gas prices now, because i'm up for re-election. you know what was the unsaid part of that statement? but i don't mind if they go up after the election. >> the head of the american petroleum institute also testified at the hearing today,

calling on the president to take steps to boost american oil production. and if you have not heard from friends on facebook in europe today, there was a good reason for that. it was out for two hours, prompting some folks to turn to twitter to vent their frustration. they have not said what caused the outage, but says the service is up and running again throughout the world. coming up later, apple showed the new ipad today. our consumer editor got a chance to use it. he says it is incredible. he will break down the features and the one disappointment. and positive reports on hiring and productivity today, helping the stock market re- gain some ground it lost yesterday. word that greek's latest economic bailout appears to come together boosted stocks, dow added back 78 points, more than a third of the 200 points it lost yesterday. the nasdaq closed 25 points

it within a matter of months. and employees and customers at a convenience store shaken today after a violent take over robbery. about 7:30 last night, robbers burst into the super liquor store on monument boulevard. this surveillance video shows the robbery in progress. the concord police say that the robbers robbed several customers before taking cash and liquor, then hitting a clerk on the head. now another clerk spoke with us this morning but didn't want her face shown. >> he was pretty scared because he thought he was going to die when he saw the gun, just within seconds it happened to him. so he was pretty scared. >> the clerk hit on the head is okay but is taking a few days off to recover from the ordeal. this is the second time the store has been robbed within the last few weeks. and repairs under way at a marin county area. the man was working outside the green garden supply, the small

nursery is on the frontage road. next, a big rig truck tried to turn around, nobody was hurt but the crash made a big mess. >> just crushed and -- crushed the merchandise, tore the sign, ripping the fence up. he caught the fence, dragged it out into the highway. the debris thrown into the highway. >> reporter: sadly, the truck took off, the customer did manage to snap a picture of the rig. at this point the chp is still trying to find the driver. and in washington, congress considering a new law that would speed up the deportation of illegal immigrants that are caught driving drunk. the committee is debating whether federal immigration records should be more available to local police to make the deportation easier.

night. temperatures didn't get that cold. winds die down tonight, cold outside, freezing and below freezing temperatures. there are winds gusting to 25 miles per hour. check out santa rosa, 64 degrees right now. overnight lows, though, in the north bay valley getting down to the low 30s, and below freezing in a lot of places, maybe in the upper 20s in places like forestville. so the freeze warning in effect in the north bay valley, santa clara valley, and when the wind dies down in some areas you find the upper 20s. there will be frost as well. those are the areas outlined. it is not that unusual this time of year to have a freeze warning. it is just -- kind of with this nice warm day, a weird situation here. because daytime highs tomorrow, they're coming up, maybe some low 70s tomorrow. so temperatures on the increase, overnight lows quite cold. the weekend we have clouds and sprinkles in there. but there is nothing big, nothing we really need.

what we need is something big to really get rain in the reservoirs tampa buckets. and it is not going that way. here you can see -- watch this area, it is going like this? that is that ridge of high pressure spilling everything up over the top. and looking at the satellite image you can tell a whole lot without me telling anything. the ridge of high pressure, everything is forcing all the way up in the gulf of alaska. the high pressure stays with us for the next couple of days. the main mechanism for warming us up. overnight lows tonight, 31 in santa rosa, 32 in napa, 34 in vallejo. these are cool, very chilly, 33 in fairfield, dropping a couple of numbers down a little bit, because i think we'll see freezing, i can feel it 32, going around 32, overnight lows, very cool with that freeze warning in effect. and then as we go into tomorrow afternoon it is a far away memory. forecast highs tomorrow, then greens are 60, yellows, 70s, tomorrow, thursday, 70s in the santa clara valley. 70s in santa rosa.

expense. >> don't worry about it, folks do this all the time in my meetings. the -- you always got to eat before you stand for a long time. that is a little tip. but they will be okay. just make sure -- give them a little room. >> the president told the workers they are building the trucks of the future, and called for more development of u.s. energy sources, including oil, gas, wind, solar and nuclear. some residents trying to block construction of a performing arts center in their gated community, 8000 people live in rossmore, and maybe presented signatures to the city council to halt the development. the city approved the small building back in 2009. the opponents will protest on wednesday, the city will make a final decision on march 29th. it may be the best pitch for saving pro sports in oakland, the plan that includes tearing down the arena and

. this is ktvu channel 2 action news at 5:00. a new plan from oakland today to tear down the coliseum and the arena and build completely new homes for the raiders, a's and warriors, and it would be just the beginning, all in an attempt to keep the three teams here in oakland. and ktvu eric rasmussen is live tonight with more details on the plans, since we first reported on it last week. eric? >> reporter: and like you said, one of the developers told me the plan is to get rid of the coliseum and the arena here,

and build three new facilities. but based on new statements coming from the a's today, just holding on to this may be impossible. the a's still want to go to san jose while the raiders could be eyeing a return to los angeles, and the warriors are considering going back to san francisco. yet today, the raiders new lineup considering keeping the teams in town had no shortage of words. >> i think this team, we're about to hit a homerun. and the game is on. >> reporter: the mayor joined city staff, fans and developers just awarded 3.5 million in contracts, to plan a new coliseum city on 750 acres where oakland's teams currently play. >> they're older venue, and don't meet the standards today that are changing as we speak. we'll bring the venues to the area. >> reporter: there are plans for hotels, and new venues. >> if they want to build a good

stadium here i'm all for it. >> reporter: but as the a's looked for the league approval in the south bay, some fans wondered whether they teams would take the oakland proposals seriously. >> well right now they have to give us a chance. and hopefully we'll see. >> do you think oakland has any chance of keeping these teams here? >> well, that will be up to the mayor. >> reporter: and back out here live, no comment still from any of the teams on this new proposal. the city staff told me we could be talking about a two billion project when this is all done. but the mayor said she won't be going to voters for money, instead will rely on public- private partnerships. live, oakland, eric rasmussen. and the oakland city councilman says he will challenge mayor kwan if there is a re-election against her. they have time to look at qualifying the vote on the -- you know pardon me, i'm misspeaking, essentially they

have to gather 20,000 petition signatures in order to qualify a vote on the november ballot to recall kwan. at this point, the councilman says it is no secret that he and kwan have major differences when it comes on insuring public safety. and a piece of the world trade center from the september 11 attacks, here in the bay area. and john sasaki has more on the huge project. >> reporter: frank this is a newly completed monument. there were developments along the a, and the inspiration has now arrived. we caught up with the artist at his oakland studio, where he and the head of the city's chamber of commerce opened a special delivery. it is a piece of new york's world trade center. he says that 911 was what originally inspired the monument. >> the connecting rod. to 911, that makes all of this come whole, so to speak. the idea was inspired from it. it is being finished from it. >> reporter: a likeness of this piece of twisted metal will be

put into section four just to president lincoln's right. >> and i'll have the rescuer reaching over, touching the piece of metal. >> reporter: at the monument today, kids from a nearby school were enjoying lunchtime. area residents have been upset because the monument has been broken into numerous times. they defaced some of them. >> it was so -- >> reporter: all over her face? >> her face. >> reporter: but this lady took it upon herself to clean up the mess. she and others are angry that this keeps happening. >> i think it is wrong to everybody involved. the artist, the people who live here, the visitors who come from you know, other places to see the sculpture. and it is disrespectful to the memories of the people who are in the sculptures. >> reporter: the final section is scheduled to be shown in september. and the fundraiser effort is searching for the final

$800,000 needed. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 action news. and the race for the republican presidential nomination has moved on the alabama, mississippi and kansas tonight. rick santorum rallied a happy crowd there. the former pennsylvania senator predicted he will win in kansas and his own home state. >> mitt romney has about four or five home states, because -- i guess it comes with certain privileges. but anyway i have one home state. and that is the state of pennsylvania. and that is coming up next month, and we'll have a big win there just like he had in massachusetts. >> last night you will remember santorum won three super tuesday states, tennessee, oklahoma and north carolina. and the league of women voters and two prison rights groups are suing the state to allow some prisoners to vote. the groups say that thousands of lower risk offenders being moved to county jails to ease over crowding at state prisons should be eligible to vote. but the secretary of state says those prisoners are still ineligible to vote in state elections, if they are serving

time for a felony. and today, federal officials put the makers of a new inhalable form of caffeine on notice for what they say is inappropriate marketing. now you will remember that ktvu did a special report on the shot last month that included concerns about safety. today, the fda issued a warning to the company called breathable food for false or mislabeling advertising, saying that the labels describing it could be misleading. officials say the particles of powder are too large to inhale. they express the concern over the use of these products by children and young adults. and 100 million on the way to california, the major project the money will be used for. plus, the funding gap opening now when it comes to high speed rails. and up next, the special alert you may get from the federal government if you are on twitter

. the federal government released 100 million in grant money today for the bart extension down to san jose. they informed the councilman that the transportation authority will receive that money in three days. president obama's budget calls for 150 million in the next fiscal year beginning in october, the ground breaking on the project will start next month. and borrowing costs coming

up for the high speed rail system. the state budget analyst's office says that california will have to cough up 750 million a year to re-pay 10 billion in rail funding. borrowing costs were initially estimated at just 650 million a year, when voters first approved the bond measure in 2008. that 10 billion is also only a very tiny part of the 96 billion needed to build the high speed rail system. high speed rail opponents are using the report to demand a new vote on that project. the usda is fine tuning the way it distributes information about food recalls. the department of agriculture is rolling out a new twitter service that targets people in the affected state. until now, information about food recalls was available only on a usda website, and in general, the usda tweets. they say that it will be more efficient because it will provide information directly to the affected people. and pro athletes visiting capitol hill this morning,

pushing congress to pass a bill to give tax incentives to people who maintain an active life-style. it would allow purchases for things like gym memberships and athletic equipment to be paid for from a pre-tax flexible spending account. >> there are people that struggle financially, but just because you do that, it should not stop you from being physically fit. >> reporter: many hall of famers were among the athletes lobbying the official . police say the dad was sitting in the bleachers at the high school when he pointed a laser at the team's goal goal. the officials noted the light and ordered the father out of the arena. he was not arrested but is being charged with disturbing the peace. >> i would say yes, it is a very unique crime.
