complex. ktvu joins us now from fairfield where shots were fired overnight. >> reporter: is it just a coincidence or could some sort of retaliation be going on? these are questions neighbors and police are asking themselves right now. we're here at the entrance to parkway gardens off of east pacific where last night police responded to reports of gunfire. they searched a white car marked with bullet holes parked near the intersection with evidence. speaking with police, they don't tell us they know of anyone that was hurt in this shooting. we are still waiting to hear back from one of the lieutenants to see if any arrests were made. just wednesday evening two men were shot and killed in this exact same condominium complex. 24-year-old va dell of fairfield. and 18-year-old bernard knight of palo alto. they are search for one suspect running from the scene. an african american man 6'1"

with an athletic build. police say they have expanded their search to possibly include one more shooter. we'll keep you posted on any updates we receive from police this morning. live from fairfield i'm tara moriarty. a search is under way for a suspect in a deadly shooting in san jose. a man was shot several times on monterey highway and edenview drive at 7:00 last night. he was rushed to have a hospital where he later died. there is no information on the suspect. emotions boiled over at a community meeting to address the police response to the beating death of a berkeley hills man on february 18th. berkeley police chief michael moe man apologized to neighbors that were very angry but the police response was right given what they knew.

67-year-old peter succo was beaten to death. the chief says reports that officers were busy with occupy protestors that night are false. >> ultimately it's our responsibility to get out accurate information we can. >> reporter: police responded after cukor's wife called 911 to report her husband was being attacked. de wits parents say he suffers from paranoid sitz present yeah. dozens of people are out of their home after a large fire in berkeley. one apartment was destroyed and four other buildings are closed as a precaution. allie rasmus is in berk lee where part of the build willing -- berkeley where part of the

building which will be destroyed. >> reporter: 11 people that live in this building are homeless. this isn't just effecting the 11 people. there are four other billings that were yellow tagged. part of the reason for that engineers are concerned the building where the fire started is so unstable that it's not safe for people to live around it. from the front of the building it doesn't look like there is a lot of fire damage. let's show you what it looks like in the back of the building. that's the concern. the entire back wall is completely gone. you can barely make out what is left of a back staircase on the property. this is why part of the building needs to be demolished. the fire broke out at 4:00 a.m. yesterday. it took firefighters nearly four hours to contain it. a partial demolition is going to take place. we don't know if it's taking place today or this week. 40 residence that live in the building can't stay in their

homes while the demolition is going on. >> if it's still monday we will still be restrained. >> reporter: many of the displaced residence are uc berkeley students. that one student mentioned they have a lot of work to do. they are in the middle of midterms. that is causing a lot of stress for people that have been caused out of their homes. the university has put students up in temporary housing. if that demolition starts today we don't know what time it will start. we can tell you outside in front of this house where the fire happened, there is heavy equipment out here it looks like a cherry picker parked in front. possibly they will use that later on to take a look at the damage and get an idea if they start the demolition process where is the best place to do it. where is the best place to start. we will try to get more information from berkeley firefighters if and when the demolition will happen this morning. live in berkeley allie rasmus. this are more signs of recovery in the san bruno

neighborhood that was devastated by that deadly pipeline explosion. as soon as next week the first families to rebuild are reportedly expected to return home. now it's been 18 months since the pg&e pipeline exploded killing eight people and destroying several homes. key piece of evidence could come as soon as today. a three-judge panel is considering whether a 55 second video can be used as evidence during mirkarimis trial. the video was taken by a neighbor it shows merck rheumies -- mirkarimis wife crying and pointing to a bruise on her arm. time now 4:36.

a former eldorado sheriff is under arrest accused of stealing money from funds of four oakland police officers that were killed in the line of duty. he is accused of taking more than $20,000. he's facing 44 felony counts including grand theft and perjury. some of the money taken was intended for the families of mark duncan, daniel. the four oakland officers were shot and killed by a parolee back in 2009. investigators say the families never received any donations from adkins or the deputies association. there is not good news for people planning to fly. coming up in 11 minutes the new prediction from the faa where ticket prices are expected to

sunny and nice today. farther north things are looking a little more bullish for rain. sunny nice patchy on the coast. 60s to mid 70s. low clouds return tonight saturday and then that will give us a cool down. mostly cloudy on sunday. light rain is possible to the north. more so likely on monday. then we get between break on tuesday. it's been nearly one year since the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit japan. on march 11th it hit just north of tokyo. it created a tsunami with 30- foot waves that washed awhammies of the coast. in total more than 13,000 people were killed. it was the fourth largest earthquake in history. most people trying to rebill -- rebuild. hours after the earthquake in japan waves from that tsunami we will never forget the image there is. the pacific washed up here in

skies are clear good morning skies are clear. upper 50s and lower 60s. two men in san francisco are in the hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed during a fight. it happened at about 6:30 yesterday evening on oakwood and 19th streets in the mission district. five people got into an argument that escalated into a fight. they only have a vague description of the attackers and have not made any arrests.

we are learning more about the 13-year-old girl found dead in a sacramento county baseball dugout. jessica's mother says her daughter left home without permission monday night to meet someone unknown. now the eighth grader was found the next day in a baseball dugout next to her school. jessica was hit in the head, stabbed, scene strangled. today most of the republican presidential candidates are focusing their campaigns on mississippi and alabama which hold their primaries on tuesday. mitt romney and newt gingrich have morning events scheduled in mississippi. rick santorum is starting his day in alabama. ron paul has a campaign appearance in missouri which holds its primary on march 17th. republicans are criticizing the new hbo movie game change which debuts tomorrow. the movie focuses on john mccain's selection as sarah palin as their vice presidential running mate.

2012 video. if you'd like to see it look for the web link system. a deal will be signed today on transferring control. this has been a long delayed issue. it didn't give specific details on the agreement just that the prison control will be in the hands in the afghan government. 4:46. the president of virginia tech will take the witness stand today in the wrongful death suit connected the 2007 campus shootings. 37 people died in that massacre. student gunman later turned the gun on himself. the lawsuit claims university officials were too slow to respond and later tried to cover up their mistakes. three san leandro high school students are a hunger strike to protest the fifth year of budget cuts. they stopped eating three days ago after they approved 3.4 million in cuts next year. protesting seniors say their class won't be effected that much but worry about what is

going to happen to younger students. >> it is the students that won't even know what they lost. it will be the students that go into elementary class and don't have a pe or elementary class. >> the students are part of the social justice academy which encourages activism. they will continue the hunger strike until the district uses reserve funds to avoid the cuts. bank of america has cut a side deal with the federal government over mortgage foreclosures. the bank would give more than $200,000 financial -- more than 200,000 financially strapped borrowers to reduce their mortgage. the number of empty store fronts in the bay area seems to be shrinking. cities like oakland, san ramon and walnut creek say they don't have as many as vacant spots like last year.

san ramon's economic development director says they can see their shopping centers have been cut in half. >> the retail space is being recycled. >> last night in walnut creek the red carpet was rolled out for an opening of niemann marcus. it will bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales taxes each year. an annual economic analysis by the federal aviation administration predicts that air fares are likely to stay high throughout this decade. the faa also predicts air travel will double over the next 20 years. mergers has reduced the number of airlines and price relief is not expected to come until the airlines get more competition. >> the mergers have given the airlines more pricing power and they have used that to bring fares up. >> more airline competition is

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. time now is 4:52. apple and five major publishers could be sued for antitrust violations. the justice department is looking into complaints six companies teamed up to force amazon to raise the e-book prices. the publishers went to apple because it was big enough to combat amazon. similar charges have come up in europe. coca-cola la and pepsi are changing the way they color their soft drinks. a california law requires a cancer warning label because of that. both companies don't believe the coloring poses a health risk but they will change the soft drinks they make across the country. they say soda loafers won't be able -- lovers won't be able to notice a change. the bay area professal basketball team needs help to return next season. the ceo of the richmond rockets
