northbound which is a commute direction on the right. also the morning commute looks good on northbound 101 in san francisco. 6:01 let's go back to dave and pam. overnight news fairfield police were back on the scene. >> reporter: is it a coincidence or some sort of retaliation going on here? that is what police are trying to figure out. now we spoke to them this morning. they did confirm gunfire erupted last night inside here. it's the second time in just two days. police searched a white car marked with bullet holes parked near the intersection of dover and east pacific for evidence. investigators say they don't know of anyone who was hurt in the shooting and no word yet if any arrests were made. just wednesday evening two men were shot and killed in this

neighborhood. 24-year-old vadell chew of fairfield and 18-year-old bernard knight of palo alto. a african american man 6'1" with dread locks he drove off in gold mercedes was scene running from the scene. they have expanded the search for more than one shooter. we will stay in touch with fairfield police. we are live in fairfield i'm tara moriarty. your time now 6:02. oakland police investigating two shootings that left three people wounded. latest one happened after 10:00 last night. it started with a confrontation at 42nd and international. man was shot in the parking lot. now police say the man's friends put them in their van. they drove him four blocks away to a gas station. that's where they called the police. the man was rushed to the hospital. he's listed in stable condition. so far no arrests have been made.

less than three hours earlier at least two people were shot on 24th avenue near international boulevard. witnesses call it a running gun battle involving two vehicles. they did recover a weapon at the scene but hasn't confirmed if they arelylated to this. 24 hours after the big fire destroyed a berkeley apartment building, part of it could be torn down. allie rasmus is live in berkeley on dwightway where dozens of people in several buildings are not being allowed to go back home. >> reporter: berkeley fire officials said partial demolition would start today. we don't know exactly what time. presumably once the sun comes up. if you look out in front of the building with this fire happened, they have equipment out here where it looks like it's for that demolition process. there is a cherry picker parked in front of the apartment complex. they may be using it to get an

overhead view of the damage. 2227 dwight is the apartment building with you are looking at. the front of the building doesn't look too bad. let's show you what the back of the building looks like. the back wall is is completely gone. you can make out part of a metal staircase railing. this is the reason why engineers believe they have to tear down at least part of this building to eliminate the threat to other buildings nearby it. as many as 40 other people who lived in the buildings next to this one also can't go back to their homes until that demolition take place. yesterday many residence were escorted back into their yellow tagged buildings. >> it's just blankets and stuff like that. i have a couple textbooks and stuff.

>> reporter: now according to a preliminary report it appears the fire started in a water closet with a water heater. many of the residence reported not hearing smoke alarms go off. that is another element of the investigation that will continues today. many of the displaced residence are uc berkeley students. they are in the middle of midterms right now adding to the stress of all this. university has put up some of the students in temporary housing. live in berkeley allie rasmus. >> 6:05. just about a half hour ago the governments new jobless numbers came out. the unemployment rate remained the same as last month at 8.3%. 227,000 jobs were added in the month of february. that makes three of the best months of hiring since the recession began. coming up for you at 6:15. what the economists say the numbers really show about the condition of the u.s. economy. at 8:30 this morning a work

1407 and job fair will -- connecting wounded veterans with jobs. san jose mayor chuck reed will deliver the keynote speech. ktvu claudine wong just talked to the mayor about what this opening means for the city. claudine. >> reporter: the mayor came out here bright and early. he was here last night as well. certainly he says he is very excited about what this store means for the city in terms of the economy and bringing more attention to walnut creek. last night the store hosted a red carpet gala to mark the opening. the mayor said he was there to watch all the people come and check out the store. the store has more than 85,000 square feet. there was a pretty fierce battle over the store coming. you had a couple big retail companies fighting over there.

and residence concerned about parking and traffic that there was an unprecedented ballot measure over the store. the mayor this morning said a lot of people were focused on the fight for years but says he now believes people accept it and what it means for walnut creek. >> it was a struggle. i think what really happened was when we realized the nature of the struggle because we had no idea at least i had no idea of two retail shopping center magnets battling it out. when we finally realized what happened. we had a vote on this particular billing. over 71% of the people said yes to neiman marcus and what it will mean to walnut creek. grand opening set for 10:00 this morning. you will hear more from the mayor why neiman wanted to come to this location and why it won't just have a positive economic impact on the city. you come back out here live to the store. we have seen a lot of activity

since we've been here with the folks coming in and getting the store up and ready to go. live here in walnut creek i'm claudine wong. 6:08. sal is back. does it feel like a light friday? >> so far. yes. so far we are doing pretty well out there. i would say. if you look at the traffic pictures you might agree with me here as you look at 80 westbound. now it definitely is getting more crowded by the minute as we get to the heart of the commit which i would say has been between 6:30 and about 8:15 or 8:30. those two hours there. that two hour time block is when we get to the peak. on fridays it might be better than that. moving along to the toll plaza no big crowd. the metering lights usually go on about 6:15 and get a crowd here. also the morning commute looks good on 80 westbound. no metering lights.

no problems i'm sorry no metering lights. no slow downs getting through here. as we look at the nimitz freeway the same thing goes. dumbarton bridge a little bit use approaching the toll plaza. the full moon was yesterday morning. 1:39 in the morning. but still clear skies. there is a little bit of fog over by the coast. it will be on the increase tonight. cooler today by the beaches. still mostly sunny. the fog still has a ways to go. inland it will be nice. it will if sunny. we are starting a little bit of a cool down here. not so much today but as we go into the weekend and early next week i say fog but there is very little there. clear, cold. it will be sunny mild to warm. some of that fog will start to work its way back. 30s and 40s. 39 livermore. 39 concord. many areas starting to dip now. we'll see a little cooler

readings as we head toward 7:00. it's just pushing in some of that low cloud deck. there are signs next week that certainly northern california and by that i mean mendocino county north will get some rain. it will be cooler. we'll say goodbye to the 70s. there will be rain but i'm not really buying into it south of san francisco, oakland until later in the week. this needs to develop . this has been a dry year. i think we need to get to spring then the pattern will turn wetter. today sunny and nice. patchy fog on the coast. more of a westerly wind or a southerly breeze. the wind cools down a little bit. still lots of lower 70s and upper 60s. now the fog will be regrouping tonight into saturdays. and mostly cloudy on sunday. light rain possible to the north on monday.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. emotions boiled over at a community meeting to address the police response to the beating death of a berkeley hills man on february 18th. angry neighbors showed up to confront berkeley police chief michael meehan that apologized but he also said the police response was the right one given what they knew. 67-year-old peter cukor was beaten to death 16 minutes after calling a nonemergency line to report a trespasser. reports that officers were busy with occupy protestors that night are false. >> ultimately it is our responsibility to get out accurate information quickly as possible. we didn't do a good job.

police responded after cukor's wife called 911 saying her husband was being attacked. the president of virginia tech will take the witness stand today. 32 people died in that massacre. the student gunman later turned the gun on himself. the lawsuit claims that university officials were too slow to respond and later tried to cover up their mistakes. our time is 6:16. the governments new jobs report came out a little while ago. it was a little better than expected. alison burns is in our washington, d.c. newsroom to tell us how many jobs were created last month and where. alison. >> reporter: the report shows more momentum in hiring. employers added 227,000 jobs in february. exists were expecting slightly

less. the unemployment rate stays the same at # .3%-- 8.3%. manufacturing added 30,000 jobs. retail stayed flat after big gains in january. construction jobs are down. president obama heads to a rolls royce plant to talk about his efforts to boost manufacturing. this takes on more significance for him because it's an election year focused in large part on jobs. one other very interesting note government hiring about the same. all the layoffs we saw last year seems to be subsiding. for now we are live in washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. 6:17. charges have been filed against four people is in connection with a -- this protest you're

watching. this is back in november on the uc berkeley campus. among them a university professor. now look closely. she is believed to be shown in this youtube video you are watching. she is being grabbed by her hair from officer there is. they were charged with resisting arrests and other misdemeanors they are due in court later this month. some occupy oakland protestors are getting legal help. 12 occupy protestors were issued stay away orders by oakland police. now this prohibits them from entering the public plaza. frank ogawa plaza in front of city hall. now the aclu is defending four of the demonstrators calling the stay away order unconstitutional. the aclu says it's a violation of their first amendment rights. a south san francisco man that is accused of molesting four children is due in court

today. 36-year-old kyle cliffton is charged with 12 felonies and could face life in prison. vogt raped his ever girlfriends' children. 6:18. even more signs now of recovery in that san bruno neighborhood that was devastated by a deadly gas pipeline explosion. as early as next week the first families to rebuild after the explosion are reportedly due to return home. it has been 18 months since the pg&e pipeline blew up killing eight people and destroying 38 homes in the crestmore neighborhood. san bruno neighborhood says 24 homes now are in the rebuilding process. 19 minutes after 6:00. let's go back to sal to check in on the friday morning commute. >> i just got a couple items in. i want to start off with an

overturned big rig we just found out about on 580 near the richmond bridge. as a matter of fact, one of the reasons we were tipped off is one of our crews noticed a bunch of emergency vehicles heading up to the richmond bridge toll plaza and came across as an overturned big rig near the toll plaza on the richmond side. that would be 580 heading west over to marin. if you drive across the richmond bridge this means you and big delays developing here. i want to move the maps to another big problem we have. westbound 580 let's keep it there. westbound 580 at 680. multicar accident with three lanes blocked in. and traffic is quickly backing up into the livermore area. if you drive from livermore out to castro valley all of a sudden your commute which had been doing well is not doing well at all. chp issued a special traffic alert for this area.

let's move along to live pictures. i want to show you the richmond bridge. here coming in westbound that looks good. maybe a little bit later with will see if we can move that to the left and spot that crash. well, i guess we are doing it now. thank you. westbound as you drive over to the toll plaza you can see the traffic on the bridge is looking good. but as we pan over to the left the crash is reported. this will be by the way since we're taking a little bit of time with this. this will be the last thing i talk about. you can't quite see it. i think it's behind that little hill there where the crash is. 6:21 let's go to steve. thank you, sir. the full moon was yesterday morning. but it's still the sky under clear conditions. patchy fog on the coast. it will be another nice day. it looks like after today things will cool down.

especially as we head into sunday and monday. a little bit of fog there. but it's not much. 30s and 40s on the temps. another cold morning. we lost the breeze. most locations say. a little out at fairfield. not much of this system. patchy fog at the coast. sunny and nice. temperatures still approaching the low to mid 70s for a my. 50s and 60s closer to the beaches. fog returns coast and bay saturday morning. inland will be sunny. we see partly to mostly sunny. things get interesting next tuesday. i'll talk more about that about 6:35. a bankruptcy judge has told apple it cannot continue with this lawsuit against kodak apple said kodak's patent that lets them preview uses apple technology. the case needs to be resolved

soon so it doesn't interfere with kodak. the two sides have been told to try negotiating a settlement and then report back to the judge. time 6:22. the border people struck again. a major bust at the u.s.-mexico border. a shocking discovery inside an ordinary pickup truck. don't expect it to get cheaper to fly. the faa prediction for the next several years and what it will take for prices to go down. we've had a few incidents now on the freeway. one is an overturned big rig on the canal boulevard off ramp. you can still see emergency vehicles on the way to that crash. we'll tell you more about the morning commute.

good morning. traffic is moving along a little bit slowly here as you come up to the toll plaza. metering lights have been turned on. there is a big crash in richmond. we'll tell you more. take a look at this. might look like an ordinary pickup truck but it's not u.s. border patrol says the truck was being used to smuggle a man into the u.s.. he was found hiding inside the

gas tank and in the under carriage of the truck. both the truck driver and the man inside the truck were arrested. our time is 6:26. the federal aviation administration predicts air fares will probably stay high for the rest of this decade. the faa also predicts air travel will double over the next 20 years. mergers have reduced the number of airlines and the experts say any relief in prices that is not expected until the airlines start getting more competition. the faa says more airline competition that is still years away. and the experts say the best thing you can do is book your ticket online as early as you can. today is the final day of business for a historic cafe in berkeley. cafe fanny has been opened for the past 28 years. its co-owned by alice waters. the closure is the result of the difficult economy.

of stealing money from a fund that was set up for four oakland police officers killed in the line of duty. donald atkinson. some of the money taken was intended for the families of sergeants mark, irvin, daniel, and john. the four oakland officers were shot and killed by a parolee back in 2009. investigators say the families never received any donations from atkins or the deputies sheriffs oh,. evidence could come -- three judge panel is considering whether a 55 second video can be used as evidence during mirkarimis trial. the video was taken bay neighbor and shows mirkarimis

you see the system to the far left of your screen. the fog is outs there. it's itching to get going. that will take us into a cooler pattern for saturday. today lots of sunshine. these are highs. today is a transition day. we'll still see upper 60s and 70s. 50s and low to mid 60s. they will continue to drop as we go into sunday. we had a very mild windy week we had a very mild warm pattern. we will continue that inland today. 30s for temps or 40s. 40 redwood city. concord, livermore both at 39. our system moving in is really weak. it will continue to move toward us and then kind of increase that fog. it's what is developing behind that. so fog returns. sunny inland. although that is patchy fog. but as we head toward sat and definitely into sunday the trend will be to bring the temperatures down. the key will be for next week.

one of the forecast models is very bullish for bringing rain in. really hasn't happened this year. i'm reluctant to go with it. it will be cooler. mendocino county and lake county will be in line for some. we'll see if this pattern carves itself out south. it wouldn't be until early next week. sunny nice. a westerly breeze later on which will allow temps to be held in check a little bit. 50s and 60s. still upper 60s low to mid 70s. one more day of 70s and than we cool things down. mostly cloudy on monday. rain possible to the north. it will likely on tuesday. take a look at this weather. this is new video of a collapsed roof at a massachusetts gas station. look at that. it was knocked down yesterday by a large gust of wind. now the driver was not in the car at that time. and no one else was injured. police actually say the pumps were shut off at the time of the collapse. because of the severe weather

and berkeley's police chief addressed angry residence last night about his police department's response to the beating death of a berkeley hills man. now the chief says reports that his officers were busy with occupy protestors that night are not true. part of a berkeley apartment destroyed by fire could need demolished today. allie rasmus is on dwight way this morning where the fire is causing problems for people in nearby buildings. >> reporter: that is right i just talked to the city of berkeley public information officer. she explained the owner of the billing with the fire happened has hired his own structural engineers to come check out the damage and assess whether or not part of the building needs to be demolished. 11 people who lived in this apartment building where the fire happen red homeless. but the fire didn't just effect them. there are four other buildings on this block that have been yellow tacked. one of the yellow tags this is
