a major swat operation at an east bay drugstore is over, but the search for a suspect still underway. for hours this morning police surrounded the cvs pharmacy hoping to nab a suspect inside. now the lockdown is over, but the search continues.

ktvu is finding out what happened. >>reporter: the lockdown is over because police discovered the man they were looking for is no longer inside that cvs store. they wrapped up their search of the cvs on 1500 broadway. you can see cars and customers are moving in and out of the parking lot just like a normal day, but it was a much different scene here earlier this morning. this is what the parking lot looked like at 7 a.m. police had their guns drawn and the entire parking lot was closed off for nearly four hours. it started at 6:40 this morning. the store wasn't open yet, but there were two employees in the back of the store, and they were the only people in the back of the store at the time. they were getting ready to open. a man walked up and approached the employees and was wearing a black ski mask. they immediately knew something

wasn't right. >> it's not typical for anyone to walk into a store, a place of business wearing a ski mask so we have to assume the worst. >>reporter: the s.w.a.t. team was called out. they watched the surveillance video and confirmed that the man with the mask left moments before police arrived. police still want to find this man and ask him questions about what he was doing here in the first place. they describe him as a black male, 5'8" tall, 140 pounds wearing a dark blue zip up hoody and black ski mask and was also carrying a backpack. anyone who thinks they may have seen this man or has any information should give police a call. the highway patrol says a woman led officers on a high- speed chase this morning that began in north sacramento and ended here in the bay area.

the pursuit came to an end around 10:30 when they set up spike strips to disable the suspect's vehicle on 680 in fremont. officers had their guns drawn, ordered the suspect out of the vehicle and then took her into custody. the chase began almost an hour and a half earlier when an officer tried to pull the woman over for speeding and unsafe lane changes. they say she refused to pull over and drove in excess of 90 miles an hour. no one was hurt. new numbers out this morning show california's job less rate is at its lowest leave nell almost three years. according to the state employment development department, the state's job less rate in january was 10.9 percent. that's down 310ths of a percentage point from december and the lowest since april 2009. officials say the dropped signals a continued gradual improvement in the state's

economy. allison burns has more on which sectors are seeing the most improvement. >>reporter: the report shows more momentum in hiring. employers added 227,000 jobs last month. economists were expecting slightly less. the unemployment rate stays the same at eight-point throw percent. now the employment gains come from many industries, manufacturing adding 31,000 jobs, restaurants and hotels hiring more, retails staying flat after big gains in january and construction down. labor secretary saying slow housing sales are still hurting the industry. >> i don't see that that's going to come back as soon as everyone would hope because we haven't fully recovered, but you see other segments of the economy that are starting to pick up. president obama went to a rolls recognize plant in virginia to talk about progress in manufacturing. this report takes on even more significance for him because

it's an election year focused in large part on jobs. >> more companies are bringing jobs back and investing in america. manufacturing is adding jobs for the first time since the 1990s. >>reporter: his rivals are not impressed, using campaign stops today to say he has not done enough to boost job growth. there is good news on the horizon for struggling homeowners with mortgages at bank of america. they've worked out a side deal with the federal government over mortgage foreclosures. under the deal bank of america would give more than 200,000 financially strapped borrowers the chance to reduce their mortgage principle by as much as $100,000 each. in exchange bank of america could have its policies reduced by $850 million. after years of debate and controversy the doors of the

>>reporter: committed to making the store a success, even if it means he's doing the shopping. a computer train hit and killed a person in emerald park at around 9:30. the traction reopened about 10:00 a.m. there's no word on why the person was on the track. this video shows ms. lopez crying and pointing to bruises on her arm. lopez had tried to block the video saying she thought the neighbor who recorded it was an attorney, and that it fell under attorney-client

confidentiality. prosecutors say the video is crucial to their case and they're pleased with the ruling. a judge in the case is still considering a motion to move the trial to a different county because of pretrial publicity. the man accused of shooting an off duty federal officer entered a knot guilty plea. 61-year-old dennis bagwell faces charges of attempted murder and assault with a firearm. the union city teacher is accused of shooting him at his home last month. authorities say he was obsessed with his wife. bagwell is scheduled for a pretrial hearing april 20. a search is underway in a deadly shooting, a man shot several times on monterey highway at 7:00 last night, rushed to a hospital where he later died. right now there is no information on a suspect or a

motive for the killing. fairfield police are investigating a shooting last night near an apartment complex where two men were begunked down wednesday. no one was hit in last night's gunfire, but bullets did blow out car windows. police say they believe the shooting was connected to the gun fire wednesday that killed 24-year-old chew of fairfield and an 18-year-old bernard knight. they've not made any arrests. more signs of a recovery in a neighborhood that was devastated by a deadly gas pipeline explosion. the first families to rebuild after the explosion are reportedly expected to return home next week. it's been 18 months since a pg and e pipeline blew up killing eight people and destroying 38 homes in the neighborhood. the communityvillement director says 24 homes are in the rebuilding process. a protest is forming at uc berkley against this weekend's

conservative vote. a new poll finds consumers are fed up with rise in gas prices and want the government to do something about them. according to the gallup poll an overwhelming number of consumers, 85%, say president obama and congress should take immediate action to keep a lid on prices. after nearly four weeks of daily price increases, regular gasoline averages $3..76 nationwide, higher in the bay area, where the average price is $4.40 in san francisco. already that time of year again where we spring forward to daylight savings time. standard time ends and daylight time begins at 2 a.m. sunday morning, so don't forget to set your clockses ahead one hour before going to bed on saturday night. fire officials say this is also a good time to change the batteries in your smoke alarms.
