causing. good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, march 10th. a little bit of rain is on the way this weekend. rosemary joining you news for with a quick look at what is happening. good morning, rosemary. >> good morning to you! and the major changes today, the cooldown. from five to 10 degrees expected for the afternoon, we've got clouds outside our door this morning, and we are off to a chilly start. we'll look at your current conditions and talk about the rain coming up in just a few moments. and we begin with break news. crews on the scene right now of a big fire in hayward. allie rasmus just got to the scene. and we understand several businesses are affected. >> reporter: that's right. this is the intersection of jackson and watkins in hayward this. is where the fire started, around 5:45 this morning. the flames are gone, the smoke is gone, you can still see some firefighters on the roof of

this building. traffic is affected, but we have a ward firefighter telling us what exactly happened here this morning. >> yes, good morning. to your viewers at home, we've had two fires today, thought is second one this morning. this broke out at 5:45 a.m. this first of all came in we thought with smoke from a strip mall upon arrival we ended up having flames through the roof, which appeared for the strip mall showing which is an outbuilding behind the strip mall. every effort was put into place to save the mall. behind the structure is not a plastering and apparently they have a warehouse full of items. that's completely burned through. firefighters are sifting through the rubble, looking for hot spots, making sure the fire does not extend anywhere. but the good thing about this is that nobody was on scene at the time, so there were no injuries. firefighters did not sustain injuries. this did go to a second alarm.

the fire department called for mutual aid through alameda county to backfill the fair stations. >> so one business severely damaged but four others that share the same building have some damage as well. have you talked to the owners? >> the owners of the donut factory is on his way. the owner of nava plastering is on his way and should be here momentarily. but we don't have any other owners that have arrived yet. subway is still obviously damaged. we don't expect any of these businesses to open today. >> and the plastering company, that appears to be where the fire started. >> we center no idea what triggered it. it's obvious it started that that location, as that has the serious amount of burn through on the heavier beams. >> so what is the next step for fire investigators? >> yes, we have one friar investigator on scene now

taking pictures and documenting the scene because it could be possible crime scene, so we want to make sure it's fully documented. weapon also have two other investigators on their way from eden hospital, from a previous fire this morning where we had two badly, one critically burned victims in the early morning fire on k street. >> thank you very much for updating us on what is going on here. we're going to continue to stay here on the story this morning, but the latest is that two- alarm fire. it's now under control but happened in the strip mall behind us. five businesses damaged in this. coming up we will have some video of the flames, some witnesses said the flames appear to be pretty high. 25 to 30 feet in the air. we'll have that video and what some people who saw the fire had to say about it. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. also new this morning, as he mentioned we're following another fire there in hayward. it's a house fire that broke out at a single story home on the 300 block of 8th street.

two people written side at the time. they suffered burns and smoke inhalation. both of them had to be taken to eden medical center. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. happening right now, utility crew is working to restore power to a san leandro neighborhood. around 4 this morning a car slammed into a pole on the 1700 block of manor boulevard. power was knocked out to 500 pg&e customers. there's no word on when power will be restored. the driver was taken to eden medical center. police are check to go see if alcohol was a factor in the crash. police are investigating a deadly shooting in san francisco's mission district. it happened on 23rd and shot well street last night. police say they found a 39-year- old man fatally shot inside a car there. his car had also crashed into another unoccupied vehicle. right now there is no information on a suspect. overnight, oakland police recovered a damaged car left at the scene of an illegal street race. officers received numerous reports of revved up engines

and screeching tires. police believe the street race stretch from the port of oakland to the area of third and adeline streets. officers chased a vehicle suspected to be involved in the street race but they gave up the high-speed pursuit as it left the city. the chp picked up the chase and arrested a suspect. nation of islam leader louis farrakhan is set to speak at uc berkeley in two hours. if a petition is circulating in protest of his scheduled appearance. farrakhan is due to speak at 9 a.m. at the coalition conference. he has been criticized for controversial and racially charged statements he's made in the past. uc berkeley black student union says it invited farrakhan because of his ability to inspire african-american students. today a group of students will begin a,000 mile walk to washington, d.c. to convince lawmakers to pass a federal dream act. the walk begins at noon on the golden gate bridge and includes

a stop in u-c berkeley for a rally with jose vargas, the journalist who recently revealed that he is an illegal immigrant. california's dream act allows undocumented high school graduates to receive financial aid if they seek citizenship. tomorrow marks the first anniversary of one of worst disasters in history. close to 20 though people in the japan earthquake and tsunami. coming up in just about seven minutes, the challenges still ahead, and the number 6 people still live in temporary lousing one year later and the effect it could have on california. dozens of uc berkeley students displaced from their apartment, amp a devastating fire are back home. four buildings caught fire early thursday morning. even though it was furlough friday, the city expedited a permit to let crews demolish the back half of burned-out structure. tenants in the yellow tagged buildings were allowed back in by late afternoon yesterday. some students had escaped the fire with only the clothes on

their backs. >> we thought we wouldn't come back until monday, so to be back is great i guess, and yeah, good to be sitting on our beds again. >> investigators say the fire appears to be accidental and that it started on the ground level and closet, which housed water heaters. damage is estimated at more than a million dollars. investigators say remnants of a drug lab likely caused a house fire in mill valley. flames were seen coming from the home thursday morning. authorities found marijuana and suspicious materials inside including hundreds of butane cans. female resident is accused of converting marijuana to hash oil. 53-year-old ramona has been arrested on suspicion of manufacturing a substance. that fire caused $400,000 in damage. one of so-called speed freak killers now says the group of men committed more than 70 murders. wesley shermantine is on death row and sent a second letter to a sacramento tv station

claiming he is partner lauren herzog and an unidentified third man killed 72 people. hundreds of bones from dozens of victims have been recovered at an abandoned well. in his latest letter he mention the killing of a pregnant black woman. his first letter stated he knew where his victims were buried. a second person is under arrest in connection with an amber alert issued from mendocino county. police arrested leonard tuttle yesterday afternoon. officers say he abducted his ex- girlfriend's daughters. a 45-year-old woman was also arrested but her relationship with tuttle is unclear at this time. an amber alert was issued and he was arrested after a driver saw his car northbound on highway 101. officials say the girls were not hurt. new this morning, president obama is defending his administration from republicans who continue to demand the u.s. allow more oil drilling to help

lower the price of gas. he made those comments in ace weekly online video address. >> under my administration, oil production in america is at an eight-year high. we've quadrupled the number of operating rigs and opened millions of acres for growing. but you and i both know that with only 2% of the world's oil reserves we can't just drill our way to lower gas prices. >> president taped his address yesterday at a rolls-royce engine plan in virginia. the same day the february jobs report showed the economy added 233,000 jobs. the bay area job market shows signs of improvement. the tribune reports the region added nearly 14,000 jobs in january. the majority coming from the east and south bays. growth factors include administrationer retail and construction. the bay area unemployment rate about a percent in january and that's compared to 2011. we can't complain about the stretch of weather we've had. it's been beautiful all february, march.

high clouds mixed with low clouds across bay area this morning. rain in the forecast by tomorrow! tomorrow mark the anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami in japan. the disaster killed nearly 20,000 people in northeastern japan. it also triggered the worst nuclear crisis since chernomyrdin. today on the eve of the anniversary, japanese leaders blame themselves for not responding quickly enough and for not organizing relief efforts in a timely manner. >> it's encouraging to see how far they have come. but it's going to be many years before things are really resolved. and i think there are a lot of challenges ahead as to how you rebuild some of these towns. >> a year later nearly 800 people are still living in evacuation centers. 300,000 people are in temporary homes. in addition it's expected later this year that the pacific ocean will carry debris from the japan disaster to the shores of california and the rest of the west coast. the effects of the tsunami were

felt in santa cruz. damage from the surge costs millions of dollars to repair. more than 100 boat owners have received financial assistance and two new docks have been built. but boat owners are quick to point out the real cost of the disaster. >> this was inconvenient for our yacht harbor. but the things that happened in japan were devastating those people. people lost their lives, their home and the power plant and all that, just that's the real issue. >> santa cruz harbor officials say they still need repair, an additional 20 docks, something they expect to be doing this time next year. there are at least two events held in the bay area this weekend to remember the victims of the japanese earthquake and tsunami. there is a remembrance vigil at the ui senior center in san jose beginning at 5 tonight. any donations collected at that vigil will go directly to japanese relief efforts. and there is also an event in japan town, peace plaza in san francisco at 2:00 tomorrow. a moment of silence will be

observed at 2:46 p.m., the moment the disaster struck japan. in our election 2012 coverage, it's caucus day in kansas, but g.o.p. front-runner mitt romney is skipping the state and focusing on the south. the former massachusetts governor spent yesterday campaigning in mississippi. that state with alabama will hold primaries this upcoming tuesday. romney's campaign is trying to lower expectations, saying he is the underdog. meanwhile, newt gingrich says he is staying in the race, win or lose, on tuesday. >> you will work really hard the next few days. we'll win on tuesday when we win on tuesday, we'll have a remarkable impact on the race. once again for the ninth or 10th time, the race will change. >> rick santorum is spreading himself between both the southern states and kansas, where he has some appeal among social conservatives. a man is facing federal charges this morning for sending threatening letters to congress. fbi agents arrested 39-year-old christopher carlson yesterday at his apartment in vancouver,

washington. he is accused of mailing around 100 letters containing white powder and threats to members of congress, including house speaker john boehner and washington senator patty murray. neighbors say they cannot believe the reserved man is now in custody. >> quiet, very quiet. very subdued. he didn't talk to anybody. he said hi and that's about it. they kept to themselves. >> the suspicious envelopes were also sent to members of the media. all the packages tested negative for toxic substances. carlson could be arraigned in federal court as early as monday. police in washington state are still searching future the man who shot a deputy and stabbed a judge inside a courthouse. it happened yesterday in montesino, small town west of olympia. the deputy had approached a suspicious man in court, who suddenly attacked her with a sharp object. when the judge rushed over to help the man cut him in the neck, took the deputy's gun, shot her in the shoulder, and then ran off.

the deputy and judge are in satisfactory condition. the suspect who has not been identified by authorities is still at large. a california father accused of drugging and sexually assaulting his children's baby- sitter is out on bond this morning. 53-year-old kevin gatey was arrested in norwalk near long beach. sheriff's officials say he had hired the 22-year-old victim through a babysitting service online. he allegedly offered her a crink and she immediately became sleepy. >> she remembers waking up a short time later, after that, and the suspect was sexually assaulting her. >> poor girl. she was 22 and something like that happens to her. looking for work or whatever, and something tragic like that happens. >> investigators say tests show the woman ingested a drug used in hospitals before surgery. they are now looking for more possible victims are advising young women to be extra cautious when dealing with these online baby sitting

is back open this morning. it was closed on thursday after 800 gallons of sewage leaked into the ocean. yesterday health officials said water tests showed no sign of bacteria. we may not be seeing those two day from whales around the san francisco bay anymore. newschopper 2 spotted one of the whales yesterday evening swimming away from the golden gate bridge and into the pacific. if it is the same mother gray whale and her calf, it could be a sign they are back on track heading up the coast to alaska. >> had like a long trek to go, and it's very arduous. it's 6,000 miles some hopefully the calf is getting all bulked and ready to take the long trek. >> the coast guard has been warning boaters to stay 300 feet away from the whales for a small calf getting separated from the mother could prove deadly. criminal penalties for harassing whales can go as high as 20,000 dollars. time is 7:28. a popular bay area lounge gets a last reprieve.

breaking news, a big fire in a strip mall in hayward. firefighters are still on the scene right now. welcome back to mornings on 2. as many as five businesses were damaged in the fire. allie rasmus is live now at the scene, where you just talked to some of the business owners there. >> reporter: we did. and some of them are very worried about what this means for their business. firefighters for their fire said it's not likely these businesses will be opening at all today. take a look behind us. this is the intersomethings of jackson and watkins in hayward. it's still partially closed to traffic. because of this two-alarm fire that happened in the strip mall you see at the corner across the street. it started at 5:45 this morning. firefighters you can he see are still here, putting out hot smokes. this is what it looked like just an hour ago. witnesses reported seeing flames shooting 25 to 30 feet in the air. the fire started at the nava plaster company, a small business in the back of the

strip mall. we're told their business severely damaged, a total loss. and there are four other businesses also in the same build that are also damaged, including a donut shop, a payday loan store and a togo's sandwich shop. we talked to the manager and she told us what she is most afraid of this morning after seeing some of the damage from the fire. >> all my employees will be unemployed. that's my biggest concern, is that insurance -- if there's damage to the building, if the building burns down, insurance will cover that. insurance is not going to cover my employees. >> again this was a two-alarm fire at its worst. the good news according to firefighters is that no one was in the building at the time. so no one was injured. no firefighters were injured in putting out the fire. the next step according to the fire information officer out here is for fire investigators to get out here. they still don't know how this fire started so they're at that plaster company where it started, trying to document the scene and figure out how this

fire began in the first place. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. ashes from a cigarette are blamed for a big apartment complex fire. that fire damaged 26 units at the dana garden apartments last month. all of those units are considered uninhabitable. the fire caused 1.5 million in damage not one was hurt. opening arguments in the domestic violence trial of san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi could begin by late next week. two rulings have already gone in favor the prosecution. a uc berkeley law lecturer will be able to testify about victims in relationships. a 55-second video smoke mirkarimi's wife with a browse on her arm can also be admitted as evidence. >> cross-examine a video, you can't ask a video what we this thinking, how they were feeling, what their motivations were, what happened before and after. >> a panel of 144 possible

jurors are scheduled to be questioned on monday. however, the trial judge must still consider a defense motion for a change of venue. fairfield police have released the photos of three men suspected in a double homicide. arrest warrants issued for blake johnson, darren tremendouson and marcel rutherford. they are accused of shooting to death two men wednesday night at the parkway gardens complex in fairfield. police say a shooting on thursday night nearby may also be connected. no one was injured but bullets did shatter car windows in that area. is crime on the rise in pleasant hill? the police chief doesn't think so. earlier this week the pleasant hill police officers association issued a press release stating violent crime was increasing in the small east bay city. in response, chief dunbar said the number of crimes is consistent with the numbers in previous years except for last year, when the numbers were down. the spike is crime is stretching the department's resources. the chief says the city is

still very safe. cameras will keep an eye on students in lafayette. the school district governing board has approved four cameras at lafayette elementary school and stanley middle school. the contra costa times reports this is a pilot program designed to combat vandalism and theft. staff members reported graffiti, a fire and even break- ins over the course of about 18 months. san jose might soon be adding new jobs and opening up empty facilities in city officials say it's all because the city has a budget surplus. it's projecting a $10 million surplus in its 800 million collar operating budgets. the city says the surplus is due to layoffs and cuts in salary. the mayor is recommending the money be used to open four newly built libraries and the community center which has sat empty. also wants to increase spending on gang prevention programs, repair and maintains the most heavily used roads, complete

the autumn parkway project and maintain funding for school crossing guards and the children's health initiative. the budget to build a new 49ers stadium has crept up to almost $1.2 billion. the final costs include $78 million in loan interest and fees, along with more refined construction estimates. santa clara city officials are said to approve the new figures next week and construction on the stadium could start next month. niners hope to open the 2014 season in their new home. san francisco's polk street is becoming a hot nightspot but residents are upset what the neighborhood has become. new stores and nine pictures with in two blocks make this the place to be. polk street is attracting its share of young party-goers. and when the bars close, neighborhood activists say the streets are just too chaotic. >> the loudest group are the girls. they're just screaming when they see their friends, they're just screaming if running out in the streets.

>> people who have lived here for a while were disgruntled. i mean, you suppose that's their prerogative. but that's changed in my mind. >> for some residents the noise of a more vibrant neighborhood is a welcome sound considering the poverty of prostitution and drugs that polk street has long struggled with. the beer and cocktails will still be flowing at a famous san francisco watering hole. the gold dust lounge was slated to close today when its lease expired. the building's landlord reportedly wants to put in a clothing retailer, but the bar will remain open due to ongoing lawsuit filed by gold dust owners. the bar has been 42nd over the years by celebrities, including chronicle columnist herb caen and singer tony bennett. supporters of -- are expected to rally this afternoon the bowling alley. the landlord recently decided not to renew the lease there. that means the 51-year-old bowling alley will close on april 15th. many bowlers are asking the

landlord to extend the lease and allow the bowling alley to stay open. the rally is at 1:00 in the sarah bowl parking lot today. passengers on a flight from dallas to chicago say their flight attendant just lost it and her antics were all caught on camera. [screaming] >> yes, those are the screams of that american airlines flight attendant being subdued. show allegedly went on a 15- minute rant over the flight pa system, asking the plane was on auto pilot and saying she wasn't responsible for the passengers' safety. passengers were stunned. >> she said she would not be responsible for the plane crashing. we hadn't even left the ground yet. >> after that it got scary. >> a pilot and a couple in first class helped restrain the flight attendant. she was taken to the hospital for evaluation. the passengers took off on another plane with a different flight crew. outside it's a good day to

saturday, march 10th. we are expecting a pretty nice day today. but don't get used to t. a light rain is on the way. let's get right to rosemary and your forecast. good morning, rosemary. >> good morning to you! today may be a good day to check those windshield wipers if they need changing now is the time to do it. we're got mostly cloudy skies this morning, because of it our temps up a little bit from yesterday. but partly cloudy and cooler conditions expected for the afternoon. and as mike mentioned the extended forecast looks wet. i'm going to show you this model and the numbers for today, coming up! we begin in hayward, as investigators are trying to figure out what a fire at a strip mall just over two hours ago. this is a live look at that damage in hayward. you can see it's extensive. this is at jackson and watkins. fire officials say the fire started around 5:45 this morning. and when firefighters got on scene this is what they saw, flames shooting through the roof. firefighters say a plastering business was destroyed. several other businesses adjacent to it were damaged. >> we don't have any other

owners that have arrived yet. subway is still obviously damaged. we do not expect any of these businesses to open today. >> fortunately, no one was hurt but the cause is still under investigation. ktvu's allie rasmus is live at the scene and is going to have an update coming up at 8:30. we have new information on another fire in hayward. a house fire which badly burned the people inside. the fire broke out in a single story home on the 300 block of a street. two people were inside at the time. fire officials tell us both of them were badly burned, one has critical injuries. both were taken to eden medical center. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. and overnight car crash nabbed out power to a san leandro neighborhood a vehicle slammed into a pole on the 1700 block of manor boulevard. this is new video of that crash. it caused quite a mess. at one time power was knocked out to nearly 500 pg&e customers. a handful of customers are still without electricity this morning. and there is no word on when power is going to be fully

restored. the driver was taken to eden medical interest and police are check to go see if alcohol was a factor in the crash. a man is in custody accused of street racing in the east bay. overnight oakland police recovered a damaged car left at the scene of an illegal race. officers got numerous reports of engine and screeching tires. officers did chase after vehicles suspected in the street race but gave up the high-speed pursuit as it left the city. but the chp picked up that chase and eventually arrested the suspect. police are investigating a deadly shooting in san francisco's mission district. it happened on 23rd and shot well streets before 7:30 last night. police say they found a 39-year- old man fatally shot inside a car there. his car had also crashed into another vehicle. there's no description of the gunman. dozens of uc berkeley students back home in morning after being displayed by a

fire. there are four buildings yellow tagged near a build that caught fire thursday. the city expedited a permit so crews could demolish the back half of that burned out structure. tenants in the yellow tag buildings were allowed back by late afternoon yesterday. some students had escaped with the only the clothes on their back after the friar. >> we thought we wouldn't be able to come back until monday, so to be back is like really great, i guess, and good to be sitting on our beds again. >> investigators say the fire does appear to be accidental and say it started on the ground level in a closet that housed water heaters. damage estimated at more than a million dollars. a man and a woman in jail this morning accused of kidnapping two children in glen county. police say leonard tuttle abducted his ex-girlfriend's two daughters and an amber alert was issued. he was arrested after a driver reported seeing his car on

highway 101. several hours later police arrested 45-year-old melissa briton, believed to have taken part in the alleged kidnapping. the two children were not hurt. the so-called speed freak killers may have committed more than 70 murders. serial killer wesley shermantine is currently on death row. he sent a second letter to a sacramento tv station claiming he and his partner lauren herzog and an unidentified third man killed 72 people. hundreds of bones from dozen of victims have been recovered in an abandoned well. in his latest letter he mentions the killing of a pregnant black woman. nation of islam leader louis farrakhan is set to speak at uc berkeley in just about an hour and a petition is circulating in protest of his appearance. he is due to speak at 9 a.m. at the african black coalition conference he's been criticized for controversial and racially

skies, towards the city this morning. cool and calm outside your door. the national weather service is confirming that a tornado hit the hawaiian island of oahu. people are cleaning up from a twister that began on the water as a waterspout and then made its way to land near the community of enchanted lakes. the tornado moved about a mile and a half inland, strong winds pulled up part of one man's roof and blew it into a neighbor's yard where is landed in a free. >> but if you -- i heard that whoop, and big woosh. and it was gone. >> other people reported seeing poles being pulled up off the ground by the wind and landing on cars. there is quite a bit of damage from the shoreline to enchanted lakes. residents say the weather around hawaii has been bad as of late. we're getting an incredible new look at last week's violent tornado in kentucky.

judge in a courthouse. it happened yesterday in montesino. small town just west of olympia. the deputy had approached a suspicious man in court who suddenly attacked her with a sharp object. and when the judge rushed over to help, the man then cut him in the neck, took the deputy ace gun, shot her in the shoulder and ran off. the deputy and the judge are in satisfactory condition. the suspect was not identified by authorities is still at large. a california father accused of drugging and sexually assaulting his children's baby- sitter is out on bond this morning. 53-year-old kevin katie was arrested last month in norwalk, near long beach. sheriff's officials say he hired the 22-year-old victim through an online babysitting service. he allegedly offered her a drink one day and torts say she immediately became sleepy. >> she remembers waking up a short time later, sometime after that, and the suspect was sexually assaulting her. >> poor girl. like she was 22 and something like that happens to her. she was looking for work or

whatever and something tragic like that happens. >> investigators say tests show he had ingested a drug normally used in hospitals before surgery. they're now looking for more possible victims and advising young women to be extra cautious when dealing with online babysitting service juices the two gray whales swimming in the san francisco bay may be going elsewhere. where our cameras spotted them to that could be a sign they're heading north. and time for the weekend, our temperatures are cooling down. coming up what you can expect for your area and how soon we may need that umbrella. i can't stand these spots.

from the golden gate bridge into the pacific. if it's the same mother great whale and her calf it could be a sign they're back on track heading north up the coast towards alaska. >> they had like a long trip to go and it's very arduous, 6,000 miles. so hopefully the calf is getting all bulked and ready to take the long trek. >> the coast guard was warning boat to stay 300 feet away from the whales. the calf could prove getly to be separated from its mother. it should be a nice day today. but rain coming and rosemary, i have a lot of friends headed to the sierra. how is it looking for them? >> today looks good. bring along the chains because changes as early as tomorrow expected and we could see it a few snowshowers in the forecast for the sierra on sunday. today mostly sunny skies, temperatures not too bad. a great day for skiing. winds are light. tomorrow the ski resorts could be impacted, gusts expected to pick up to 30.

thanks to some helpful lifeguards and seaworld trainers. that sea lion was tangle up in a fishing note in san diego and couldn't get back into the water. the net had a hook that was attached to the animal's lip. the experts freed the sea lion from the net and removed the hook. >> so we put a net over her head, she was really exhausted, not moving at all about. but still pulling from thely line, and we were able to get in the air and cut the line. >> she looks much happier now! within minute the sea lion headed back into the ocean and was swimming again. the seaworld san diego rescue team helps about 300 distressed birds, seals and satisfy lions each year. a popular bowling alley is closing down. the efforts today to save daly city's sarah bowl. >> firefighters still putting out hot spots at this fire in hayward. coming up we'll show you video of what it was like for firefighters battling the

flames tear through a hayward strip mall this morning, one business is destroyed and several others are damaged. good morning, everyone. welcome back to mornings on 2. that fire is now out but investigators remain on the scene at jackson and watkins. allie rasmus is there live with some exclusive video of the. >> reporter: that's right, the fire is out. most of the smoke is gone but just in the last half hour we're seen firefighters go back on to the roof of this building to try to put out some of the hot spots that have just flared epp in the last half hour. this business is the nava

plaster company. there's also a plumbing company right next do it. so it may be all part of the same business. the owner has not arrived yet. we'll try to talk to him to find out. but this is where the fire started around 5:45 this morning. we got this individual 80 from firefighters on the front lines of the fire. this is video you see only on 2. these are firefighters tackling the flames from the roof of the business next door to the plaster company. this was a two-alarm fire at its worst, but the smoke and the water damage extended beyond the plaster company to four other businesses in a strip mall that sits next to the building. one of the workers at a donut shop, one of the four businesses, was inside when the fire broke out and he is she didn't notice the smoke until one of her customers walked outside, saw the flames and ran back in to get her. here's what the employee had to say. >> the customer saved my life. yeah. i'm so proud of them helped me out. >> and the employee says if it

wasn't for that customer, noticing the fire, outside she probably wouldn't have noticed it right away and she credits that customer with really saving her life and helping her get out in time. this is a two-alarm fire. the good news, though, is no one was in the plaster company building when the fire started. so no one was injured. the two employees in the donut shop got out safely. they weren't injured. and no firefighters were injured putting this out. the next step according to firefighters out here is to have some of the investigators come to the scene. once they get the hot spots taken care of, investigators will go back into the building to try to pinpoint where the fire started and exactly how it started. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. opening arguments in the domestic violence trial of san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi could begin by late next week. two rulings have already gone in the favor of the prosecution. a uc berkeley law lecturer will be allowed to testify and the

the fire caused $400,000 in damage. ashes from a cigarette are blamed for a big apartment complex fire in mountain view. last month's fire damaged 26 units at the dana gardens apartments. all of those units are considered uninhabitable. the fire caused $1.5 million in damage. but fortunately nobody was hurt. fairfield police are released the photos of three men suspected in a double homicide. arrest warrant issued for 21- year-old blake johnson, 21-year- old darren and 18-year-old marcel rutherford, accused of shooting to death two men wednesday night at parkway gardens complex in fairfield. police say a shooting thursday night nearby may also be connected. no one was injured but bullets did shatter car windows in the area. a san francisco man accused of posing as a doctor has also now been charged with sexual assault. 49-year-old carlos gaza allegedly ran a clinic on mission street using a fake identity. he performed plastic surgery

procedures and four more people have come forward with complaints including one woman had says he sexually assaulted her. he pleaded not guilty. is crime really on the rise in pleasant hill? the police chief doesn't think so. earlier this week the police officers association issued a press release stating violent crime was increasing in the small city. in response yesterday the chief said the number of crimes is consistent with the numbers in previous years, except for last year, when the numbers were down. the union contends a spike in crime is stretching the department's resources. the chief says the city is very safe. san francisco's polk street is becoming a hot spot but neighbors are upset. there are new stores, rents and nine bars in two blocks, making this a place to be. polk street is attracting its share of young party-goers, though, and when those bars close, neighborhood activists say the streets are just too

chaotic. >> the loudest group are the girls. they're just scream when they see their friends. they're just screaming and running out in the streets. >> people who have lived here for a while disgruntled, i suppose that's their prerogative. but that's change. i think that's just an inevitibility. >> for some residents the noise of a more vibrant neighborhood is a welcome sound, considering the poverty, prostitution and introduction that polk street has long struggled with. cameras will keep an eye on students, staff and school grounds in lafayette. the lafayette school district governing bothered has approved four cameras at lafayette elementary school in stanley middle school. the contra costa times reports this is a pilot program designed to combat vandalism and theft. staff members reported graffiti, glue indoor locks and a fire and break-ins over the course of 18 months. this morning a dog remains in critical condition after being pulled from a burning

shed. the six-year-old male pit bull that you see there is suffering from burns on his body and in his airways. firefighters tunnel for the dog unconscious and tethered to a shed attached a apartment building. firefighters revived the dog using oxygen and animal services says the owner of the dog has not come forward. >> animal suffocated when they've been tethereddered in such a way. so that's a potential violation specific to the tethering. whether there's intent involved in this, we don't know. >> the dog is being monitored closely by doctors who say his condition is day to day. the cause of that fire still under investigation. san jose might soon be adding new jobs and opening up empty facilities and city officials say it's because the city has a budget surplus. it's projecting a $10 million surplus in its $800 million operating budget. the city says that surplus is due to layoffs and cuts and salary.

the mayor is recommending the money be used to open four newly built libraries and the community center, which had sat empty. he wants to increase spending on gang prevention programs, repair and maintain city's most heavily used roads, complete them parkway project and maintain funding for school crossing guards. the budget to build a new 49ers stadium in santa clara is up to almost $1.2 billion. the final cost includes $78 million in loan interest and fees, along with more refined construction estimates. santa clara city officials are set to approve the new figures next week and construction on that stadium could start next month. the niners hope to open the 2014 season in their new home. supporters of sayar pole are expected to rally this afternoon outside the bowling alley. the landlord decided not to renew the lease. so the 51-year-old bowling alley will close on april 15th. many asking the landlord to

good morning to you! partly sunny skies over the bay area, clearing away to mostly sunny, rain on the way for tomorrow. there's a reminder this morning of one of worst natural disasters in history. a series of earthquakes rattled northeastern japan overnight. the largest registered a magnitude 5.4. no tsunami warning was issued and there are no immediate reports of any damage. but it hit in the same region as the 9 quake that triggered a tsunami a year ago to the day. reporter david piper has more on the long rebilling process that is far from complete. >> reporter: japan is marking the first anniversary of its triple tragedy, the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear momentdown in which 16,000 people lost their lives and another 3,000 remain unaccounted for. the operator of the crippled

fukashima daiichi plant, site of one of the worst nuclear disasters, still wants everybody on the planet to know they're sorry for what happened. >> we'd like to apologize for those who are -- affected by the accident, and also apologize to -- in the world. >> japan is still dealing with a fallout from the meltdowns of this coastal plant. according to the tokyo electric power company's own projections, it will take at least five years to remove the fuel from the damaged reactors and 30 tofully years to decommission the plant. but the company says it is still researching how to accomplish a comprehensive clean-up. >> ambitious plans on to clean up the fukashima plant relies on untested technology. radiation levels in the exclusion zone remain high, and people that come from the area

are wary of assurances from the company. dozens of workers were exposed to dangerous levels of radiation and thousands of local people had to abandoned homes and businesses when the plant's cooling systems failed. when residents are allowed in to check their properties, it's by way of an arduous process of radiation screening. some believe they may never be allowed to return home. >> everyone talking about going back, it will definitely not be able to return. >> meantime, opposition to japan's reliance on nuclear power is growing. 52 of the country's 54 reactors are now off line, because of the public outcry in the wake of the disaster. the remaining two will follow shortly, increasing oil imports to keep their lights on here. in fukashima, japan, david piper, fox news. the affects of the tsunami are felt advantagely in santa cruz. damage from the surge cost millions of dollars to repair. more than 100 boat owners

received financial aid and two new docks have been built. but owners are quick to point out that the real cost of the disaster has santa cruz harbor officials say they still need to repair an additional 20 docks, something they expect to be doing this time next year. yemen will soon be getting aid from a pentagon. the u.s. government is once again starting a program to fund military training and equipment in yemen. the programs were shut down last year. the obama administration's plan is to provide aid as long as yemen keeps moving towards creating a new government. tensions are escalating in the middle east. the islamic jihad movement released new video of rockets fired into israel this morning. there are no reports of damage but the attack is a retaliation from overnight israeli airstrikes that killed a dozen palestinians. the latest violence began when

israel targeted a palestinian commander behind the abduction of an israeli soldier who was held captive five years before being swapped for a thousand palestinian prisoners. and new this morning, former united nations secretary general kofi annan is in syria. this weekend he is acting as a u.n. arab lease envoy in the meeting with syrian president assad. he is trying to negotiate a peaceful end to syria's crackdown of government protestors. the u.n. estimates 7500 people have been killed in the year- long conflict. in columbia thousands clashed with police in a protest to demand very public -- mass demonstrators threw rocks in turnery on the police used teargas and water cannons to disburse the protestors. 58 people were arrested and one police officer was injured. the violence follows peaceful demonstrations earlier in the day against the delays and overcrowding of buses. gay rights supporters criticizing the pope's message

against same-sex marriages. pope benedict xvi is reiterating the catholic church's stance against gay marriage and denouncing what he calls the powerful gay lobby. a recent field poll shows californians favor expanding gay rights, 59% of registered voters support same-sex marriage, up from 51% two years ago. >> sexual differences cannot be dismissed as irrelevant definition of marriage. >> there's a recognition that different religious institutions have different understandings of marriage and there's an ability to separate those out from what we recognize as the civil -- and civil equality. >> the pope and bishops are in a dispute with the obama administration over federal funding for birth control. the investigation into whitney houston's death is nearly completed. sources say investigators have wrapped up the part by talking to all physicians and pharmacies with ties to houston. they say nothing appears criminal to far.

officials expect to have toxicology reports finished within the next two weeks. the 48-year-old houston died in her beverly hills hotel room on february 11th. passengers on a flight from dallas to chicago say their flight attendant just lost it and her antics were caught on tape. [screaming] >> those are the screams of that american airlines flight attendant being subdued. she went on a 15-minute rant over the flight pa system, asking if the plane was on auto pilot and saying they wasn't responsible for the passengers' safety. passengers were stunned. >> she said she would not be responsible for the plane crashing. we hadn't even left the ground yet. >> after that it started feeling scary. >> pilot and a couple in first class helped restrain her. she was taken to a hospital for evaluation. the shaken passengers took off on another plane with a different flight crew.

a rock star arrives this morning at the los angeles county museum of art. crews began moving the 340-ton boulder from a riverside quarry last week. they have been traveling only at night, at all of five miles an hour. the rock is the centerpiece of an exhibit called 11 it mass. the project casts quite a few rocks, in about $10 million. there's a special lego display in san francisco. workers from legoland, california spent yesterday setting up the "star wars" display. it's the westerfield san francisco center. there are three foot tall lego models of the character. there's also a life size darth mall. you can check them out from 11 to 2 today on the 4th floor of the westerfield san francisco center. don't forget to sprink forward. daylight savings time arrives at 2 a.m.

after battling an early morning fire. alli joins us live with the businesses now forced to stay closed today. >> reporter: well, mike, the fire started in this business right behind us. we can give you a really clear view of some of the damage here. the building you're looking at is where the fire was focused. but the smoke and fire damage extended beyond this business to three others in a strip mall right next to it. firefighters had to get on the roof of that strip mall. as you'll see in this exclusive video, they had to get up there to tackle flames from overhead. this is video firefighters gave us of that fire fight. now, the fire broke out at 5:45 this morning. the placer company suffered the most damage, but again, three other businesses effected, donut factory, payday loan shop, and a togo sandwich shop. some of the employees are standing around out here this morning, waiting to assess the extent of the damage. the manager of the togos rushed

out in her slippers this morning when she found out about the fire and told us what she was most concerned about. >> that all my employees will be unemployed. that's my biggest concern, is that insurance, if there's damage to the building, if the building burns down, insurance will cover that. insurance isn't going to cover my employees. >> reporter: and she hasn't been able to go inside yet to get a good look at the damage and figure out if and when they will be able to reopen. there were two employees inside the doughnut shop when the fire started, but they were able to get outside safely, thanks to a customer that ran inside to alert them. no one was hurt and no firefighters were injured. but fire investigators are still on the scene out here, up until about half an hour ago, still putting out some hot spots on the roof. now you can see most of the firefighters are outside the building and fire investigators, we're told, are out here. they are trying to pinpoint exactly where at this placer company the fire started, and

what may have started it in the first place. we have new information on another big fire in hayward which badly burned a mother and her son. that fire broke out in a single-story home on the 300 block of a street. firefighters tell us a 60-year-old man came home around 3:45 this morning to see smoke coming from the house. his 92-year-old mother was inside and he rushed in to save her. as the man tried to pull his mother to safety, both of them were burned. within the last hour, the victims were flown from eden medical center in castro valley to san francisco. the elderly woman is in critical condition. the man is listed as serious condition. oakland police recovered a damaged car left at the scene of a street race. officers received numerous reports, believing it stretched from the port of oakland to the area of third and add line

streets in west oakland. no arrests were made at the scene, but officers chased after a vehicle suspected in the street race. they gave up the high speed pursuit as it left the city, but chp picked it up and eventually arrest add suspect in castro valley. overnight car accident knocked out power to a san leandro neighborhood. around 4:00 this morning, a vehicle slammed into a pole in the 1700 block of manor boulevard. at one time, nearly 500 pg&e customers were without power. a handful of customers are still without electricity this morning. and there's no word on when the power will be restored. the driver was taken to eden medical center. police are checking to see if alcohol was a factor in that crash. nation of islam leader louis farrakhan is scheduled to speak at uc berkeley right now, despite protests. he's been criticized for controversial and racially charged statements that he's made in the past, but uc berkeley's black student union says it invited farrakhan

because of his ability to inspire african-american students. today, a group of students will begin a 3000-mile walk to washington, dc to try to convince lawmakers to pass a federal dream act. that walk begins at noon on the golden gate bridge, including a stop at uc berkeley tonight for a rally with vargas, the pulitzer prize winning journalists who recently revealed he's an illegal immigrant. california's dream act allows undocumented high school graduates to receive financial aid if they seek citizenship. dozens of uc berkeley students displaced from their apartments after a devastating fire are back home. inspectors yellow tagged four buildings adjacent to a building that caught fire early thursday morning. now, even though it was furlough friday, the city expedited a permit to let crews demolish the back half of the burned out structure. tenants in the yellow tagged buildings were then allowed back by late afternoon yesterday. some students had escaped that fire with only the clothes on their backs. >> we thought we weren't going to be able to come back till

. welcome back to mornings on 2. we turn now to an update on developing news. hayward firefighters are still on the scene of a large strip mall fire. that fire broke out early this morning. one business was destroyed. several others will have to stay closed today. ktvu continues to follow the story and we'll have a live report coming up at 9:45. well, police are investigating a deadly shooting in san francisco's mission district. it happened on 23rd and shotwell streets just before 7:30 last night. police say they found a 39-year-old man fatally shot inside a car there. his car had also crashed into another vehicle. right now, no suspect information. opening arguments in the domestic violence trial of san

francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi could begin by late next week. two rulings have already gone in favor of the prosecution. uc berkeley law lecturer will be allowed to testify about the behavior of abusers and why victims remain with them in relationships. meanwhile, a 55-second video allegedly showing mirkarimi's wife, ileana lopez with a bruise on her arm can be evidence. >> you can't ask a video what their he motivations were, what happened before, what happened after. >> a panel of 144 possible jurors are scheduled to be questioned on monday. however, the trial judge must still consider a defense motion for a change of venue. the top cop in pleasant hill is disputing accusations that crime is on the rise in his city. earlier this week, the pleasant hill police officers association issued a press release, stating violent crime is increasing in that small east bay city. but in response, chief pete

dunbar said yesterday the number of crimes is consistent with the numbers in previous years, except for last year when he says the numbers were down. the union contends a spike in crime is stretching the department's resources. the chief says the city is still very safe. cameras will keep an eye on students, staff, and school grounds in lafayette. the lafayette school district governing board has approved four cameras at lafayette elementary school and stanley middle school. the contra costa times reports this is a pilot program designed to combat vandalism and theft. staff members reported graffiti, glue in door locks, a fire and even break-ins over the course of 18 months. san francisco's polk street is becoming a hot night spot, but some long-time residents are upset with what their revitalized neighborhood has become. new stores, affordable rents and nine bars in two blocks make this the place to be. polk street is attracting its share of young party goers and when the bars close, neighborhood activists say the streets are just too chaotic.

>> the loudest group are the girls. they are just screaming when they see their friends, just screaming and running out into the streets. >> for those people who have lived here for a while, disgrubled it, i mean, i suppose that's their prerogative, but that's changed in my mind. that's an inevitability. >> for some residents, the noise of a more vibrant neighborhood is a more welcome sound, considering the poverty, prostitution and drugs that polk street has long struggled with. the beer will still be flowing this weekend at a famous san francisco watering hole. the gold dust lounge was slated to close today when its lease expired. the building's landlord reportedly wants to put in a clothing retailer, but the bar will remain open due to an ongoing lawsuit filed by the gold dust lounge owners. the bar has been frequented over the years by celebrities, including chronicle columnist herb cain, and singer tony bennett. supporters of sarah bowl are expected to rally this afternoon at the daily city bowling alley.

the landlord there recently decided not to renew the lease, meaning the alley will close on april 15th, but many people are asking the landlord to extend the lease and allowing the bowling alley to stay open. today's rally is at 1:00 in the parking lot at sarah bowl. the budget to build a new stadium in santa clara has crept up. the final cost includes $78 million in loan interest and fees, along with more refined construction estimates. santa clara city officials are set to approve the new figures next week and construction on the stadium could start next month. the niners hope to open their 2014 season in their new home. san jose might soon be adding new jobs and opening up empty facilities. the city officials say it's all because the city has a budget surplus. it's projecting a $10 million surplus in its operating budget. the city says the surplus is due to layoffs and cuts in salaries. mayor chuck reed is recommending the money be used to open four

newly built libraries and the community center, which have sat empty. he also wants to increase spending on gang prevention programs, repair and maintain the city's most heavily used roads, complete the autumn parkway project, and maintain funding for school crossing guards and the children's health initiative. occupy wall street in new york is running out of cash. the protest movement says its funds could dry newspaper a few weeks. a recent finance report show the group had $45,000 in its main account. the organization's accounting group says it has been spending thousands of dollars on a community kitchen and transit passes to help protesters get around new york. occupiers say they are continuing to plan projects and protests set for this spring. we're now hearing from the passengers aboard the american airlines flight where a flight attendant went on a rant, right before takeoff. as trace gallagher reports, it's all caught on camera. >> reporter: an airline altercation captured by cell phone, as an american airlines

flight attendant allegedly goes into a rant over the flight's pa system. >> she started repeating herself, very in coherent in a way, and people started to pay attention. >> reporter: the incident happening, just as the plane was preparing to take off from dallas/fort worth to chicago. the commotion near the cockpit reaching a fevered pitch. >> when we first got in and boarded, she said i forgot to take my meds. we just thought she was talking to the gals. >> reporter: during a 15-minute rant, the flight attendant allegedly asked if the plane was on autopilot and said she wasn't responsible for the passengers' safety. >> she said she would not be responsible for the plane crashing and we hadn't left the ground yet. >> after the comments were made, it got scary. >> reporter: an extra pilot along for the ride tried to subdue the woman. a couple in first class also stepped in to help restrain her. >> it was a good wrestle to get her to her seat. they had to subdue her. there were about five people holding her down. >> reporter: the flight attendant was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

the shaken passengers eventually took off on another plane with a different crew of flight attendants. in los angeles, trace gallagher, fox news. nearly a century after the titanic went down, researchers are assembling a special map of where it sank. the team snapped 130,000 photos of the wreckage site. they used two underwater robots and solar imaging to create the most in-depth picture ever of the 3 x 5-mile patch of wreckage. the titanic sank after hitting an iceberg in the atlantic ocean on april 15th, 1912. more than 1500 passengers and crewmembers died. the nfl is pitching in to clean up the debris left behind by last week's deadly tornadoes in indiana. players from the indianapolis colts went to one of the hardest hit areas, traveled to a high school that was destroyed. in all, more than 40 players and team personnel volunteered their time. they brought smiles to the victims and urged colt fans to make donations. >> the entrance of the school is gone.

. good morning, san rafael. partly to mostly cloudy skies overhead, a cool start to the day. a mild afternoon in store. . time now, 9:44. let's recap some of the top stories we're waking up to this saturday morning. nation of islam leader louis farrakhan has arrived, amid heavy security at uc berkeley. he's speaking at the african black coalition conference. he has been criticized in the past for controversial and racially charged statements. one of the so-called speed freak killers has written a second letter to a sacramento tv station. in the note, wesley shermantine claims he, his partner lauren herzog, and an unidentified third man killed 72 people. the remains of dozens of victims have been recovered at an abandoned well near lyndon in

san joaquin county. shermantine's first letter stated he knew where the victims were buried. in san leandro, a vehicle slammed into a poll at manor boulevard. at one time, 750 passengers lost power. at last word, a handful of customers are still without electricity. the driver went to the hospital and police are checking to see if alcohol played a role in that crash. . an update now to developing news we've been following for the last three hours. several hayward businesses will stay closed today, after flames ripped through a strip mall. ktvu is at jackson and watkins with video of the fire, only on 2. >> reporter: well, the fire started in a business that is located right here behind us. this is the nava placer company on atherton, and the closest major intersection is jackson and watkins in hayward. now, the fire is out. the flames are gone. firefighters are packing up their hoses, but there are two inspectors on the ground, looking through the rubble, trying to get clues as to what

may have caused this fire. the smoke and the water damage extended beyond this business to three other businesses in a strip mall located right next to it. in fact, firefighters had to get on the roof of that strip mall this morning to tackle the flames. this is video that firefighters gave to us of that fire fight overhead this morning. the fire broke out at 5:45. at one point, it was a two-alarm fire. the placer company had the most damage, but the three other businesses are affected, donut factory, payday loan shop and togo sandwich shop. there were two employees inside the doughnut shop when the fire started this morning and didn't even notice the flames, but thanks to a customer, they were able to get out safely. >> customer go inside there and then they buy a doughnut and coffee and then he left and then he go back inside and say fire! give me the phone, i call 911!

oh, my god! the customer saved my life! >> reporter: now, no one was hurt in this fire. no firefighters were injured in putting it out. but again, investigators are on the scene. if we take you back out here live, you can see some of them in the back of the placer company, going through the heavily damaged stuff in the back of this building. and they are expected to continue their work throughout the morning. now, the fire education officer explained to me all fires are considered suspicious until proven otherwise. he says there's no immediate information that points to arson or anything suspicious like that, but they are considering this a crime scene until they can get more information to determine otherwise. live in hayward, ktvu channel 2news. well, fairfield police have released the photos of three men suspected in a double homicide. arrest warrants have been issued for 21-year-old blake johnson, 21-year-old darren trahan, and 18-year-old marcel rutherford, ii, accused of shooting to death two men wednesday night at the parkway gardens complex in

fairfield. police say a shooting thursday night nearby may also be connected. nobody was hurt, but bullets did shatter car windows in that water. tomorrow marks the anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami in japan. the disaster killed nearly 20,000 people in japan. it also triggered the worst nuclear crisis since chernobyl. today, on the eve of the anniversary, japanese leaders blame themselves for not responding quickly enough and for not organizing relief efforts in a timely manner. >> it's, it's encouraging to see how far they have come, but it's going to be many years before things are really resolved. i think there are a lot of challenges ahead, as to how you actually rebuild some of these towns. >> one year later, nearly 800 people are still living in evacuation centers. 300,000 people are in temporary homes. in addition, it is expected later this year the pacific ocean will carry debris from the japan disaster to the shores of california and the entire west coast. the effects of the tsunami

were felt strongly in santa cruz. damage from the surge has cost millions of dollars to repair. more than a hundred boat owners have received financial assistance and two new docks have been built, but boat owners are quick to point out the cost of the disaster. >> this was inconvenient for the yacht harbor, but the things that happened in japan were devastating to those people. people lost their lives and homes and the nuclear power plant, that's the real issue. >> harbor officials say they still need to repair an additional 20 docks, something they expect to be doing this time next year. santa cruz officials are also bracing for possible cuts to the country's tsunami readiness programs. the new white house budget for 2013 calls for a $4.6 million cut to the national oceanic and atmospheric administration. two events are being held in the bay area this weekend to remember victims of the japanese earthquake and tsunami. there is a remembrance vigil at

the yu-ai kai beginning at 5:00 tonight. any donations collected at the vigil will go directly to fund. a moment of silence will be observed at 2:46 p.m. tomorrow, the moment the disaster struck japan. for those of you worried about doomsday, relax a bit. for years, alameda preacher predicted the end of the world would soon come. last year, there were even billboards declaring the rapture would come on may 21st, but then camping revised the date to october. now the radio evangelist is apologizing to followers. he says there's no evidence of armageddon and says his prophecy was incorrect. a dog in critical condition after being pulled from a burning shed. the 6-year-old male pitbull is suffering from burns on his body and airways. firefighters found the dog unconscious and tethered to a shed attached to a san pablo

countiy museum of art. crews began moving the 340-ton boulder from a riverside quarry last week. they have been traveling only at night at 5 miles an hour. the rock is a center piece of an exhibit called leaf tated mass. the project cost quite a few rocks, $10 million. a special lego display in san francisco. workers from legoland california spent yesterday setting up the star wars display at the westfield san francisco center. there are 3-foot-tall lego models of characters like han solo. check them out from 11:00 to 2:00 today up on the fourth floor. well, don't forget to spring forward. daylight saving time arrives at 2:00 a.m. tomorrow. so don't forget that before you go to sleep tonight, set those clocks ahead. fire officials say it's also a great time to use this time to change batteries in your smoke detectors. tomorrow is san francisco's first sunday streets of the

year. the embarcadero will be closed all the way from fisherman's wharf to mariposa street. sunday streets starts at 11:00 a.m. and ends at 4:00. for viewers down in the south bay, you may have felt a little shaking this morning. in the last hour, there have been a couple earthquakes centered in los altos, the biggest a 2.7 around 9:22 this morning. >> little ones, but still maybe something that caught people's attention. also catching people's attention, maybe one last day of weather to get outside, right, rosemary? >> yes, we are falling back to seasonal-like weather. partly cloudy skies in the forecast, afternoon highs 5 to 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. no more 70s in the forecast. mid-50s for the coast. mid-60s for some of our inland areas. this morning, waking up mid-40s to low 50s, improvement. temperatures have warmed a little bit over the last couple of hours. for your lunch hour, mid-50s to upper 50s. afternoon highs, again, 60s. mid-60s near san jose. to the north, 65 at santa rosa.
