this morning about 6:00 their plane took off from moffett field to start that mission. we were here when it took off. in that plane is a crew of 20 guards members. this boat is 700 miles off the coast. these are pictures of some of the rescue wings prior missions. this is not the work they will doing this morning. it gives you a visual idea of what they will be doing. the 129th rescue wing their helicopters can rescue people off of vessels in the middle of the ocean. that is where they are going. in this case the fishing boat with the two injured fishermen is located 700 miles off the coast of mexico. >> we are going to drop four guardian pareira rescue men. they will get on an inflatable raft. go to the vessels location. and then start providing life saving medical treatment to the

two burn victims. >> reporter: even though the two injured fishermen are chinese residence -- why the 129th rescue wing? it's one of just three air guard units in the entire country that has the ability to go out in the middle of the education and do the rescues. how do they do it? off in the distance here that if the helicopter they use to go to over the water. to the left they have the refueling planes that go alongside the helicopters. they can do these lengthy missions because they have access to these refueling planes. so we are told that this refueling plane is the second plane that is will be taking cough this morning. they are supposed to take off about 8:00.

live at moffett field allie rasmus. a u.s. soldier is in custody after walking off his base and firing his weapon at afghan civilians. afghan official says people were both killed and wounded during the shooting. nato spokesperson says they have not confirmed that anyone has died but an ap photographer says he has seen 15 bodies. the shooting comes after tense relations between the u.s. and afghan. overnight dozens of san francisco firefighters worked to put out a fire in the castro district. that fire started just before 4:00 this morning on market between sanchez and church street. it started in a basement but the flames worked their way up into joe's barbershop on first floor. it took firefighters 15 minutes to put that fire out. overnight crash in san jose killed an 1-year-old girl. the car she was a -- killed an

18-year-old girl. the teenage girl was pronounced dead at the scene. the 19-year-old male driver and 31-year-old female passenger were injured and taken to the hospital. they are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in that crash. a man is in jail after a road rejoins accident in oakland. it started just after midnight. a driver ran a red light and hit the vehicle she and her boyfriend were in. there was an altercation and the woman says she and her boyfriend were assaulted by the driver and his female passenger that left the scene. officer later pulled that vehicle over at 54th and chaddick. a pilot and his two passengers walked away from a plane crash in sacramento county. the twin engine aircraft went down last night in a field just a few miles from the airport. planes wings were ripped off and propellers were pent

backwards. all three men on board suffered cuts to their faces. federal investigators believe the men were traveling to sacramento when both engines apparently failed. a newspaper reporter said he will not sue berkeley police chief after an article be rewritten in a night. emotions ran high during this public meeting. at that meeting he was peppered with questions about his departments response to the beating deaths of residence. oakland tribune online story misrepresented his comments so a chief sent a sergeant to reporter doug oakley's home at 12:45 in the morning to insist he change the story. >> i have seen this article come in lates at night after 11:20. i think hey i'm going to deal with it right now instead of taking it deeper like i should have. taking a deep breath relaxing a little bit. thinking it through. >> it was intimidating.

i think he did overstep his bounds. the chief of the berkeley police. >> the chief has e-mailed oakley a letter of apology. oakley says he's taking it at face value. o.k.ly says he has never experience -- oakley says he has never experienced something like this. chris teen dan -- christine daniel released a statement. there was no justification for contacting the reporter in this way and the chief understands that more appropriate response to his concerns about inaccurate statements in the article should have been to wait until the following day and make contact by phone or e- mail. meanwhile the councilman says she plans to discuss the chiefs behavior with the city manager tomorrow. we know the name of a man killed at a fire in alameda. it started just before 9:00 last night on a home on helm

street. when firefighters arrived they found 54-year-old kenneth chase in the hallway. he was having a heart attack. >> when the patient was removed from the home. cpr was initiated and immediately transported to highland hospital. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. his dog was also killed in that fire. they say the fire started in the kitchen and may have been caused by an overloaded outlet where a drier and microwave were plugged in. a man is behind bars after a large drug bust. police gave us these pictures of more than 500 plants in this home which is on 33rd street. marijuana was not being grown for medical purposes. officers estimate the value at $400,000. 49-year-old lin tang was arrested on wednesday with suspension of illegal marijuana.

good morning, to you. a live look from san rafael. a blanket of clouds over the area. a few sprinkles in the forecast for your sunday. news helicopters captured a high speed chase in california overnight. police pursued a truck for about a half hour. that chase ended when a police cruiser rear ended the suspects vehicle causing it to spin out and crash into a light post. right now an extense i search is under way for four fisherman missing off the washington coast. after the -- a helicopter crew tracked it down and found a fishing boat and lifeboat on board but no one on board. >> people are very concerned and from the coast guard standpoint i'm telling the community we are looking as hard as we can. we are putting a lot of

about 90 minutes ago crews left moffett airfield headed to a fishing boat about 700 miles off the coast of mexico. more are expected to leave in a half hour. the mission is to provide life saving treatment to two sailors injured in a diesel fire. they will parachute into the ocean medical supplies and attempt to stabilize the men. allie rasmus is live at mofette and will have a -- moffett and will have a live report coming up at 8:00 a.m.. let me show you the hayward home where loren toe was taking care of his mother. early in the morning an explosion was heard and the house burst into flames. they started calling hospitals. >> we got news that something happened but couldn't get ahold of him. they didn't know what hospital he was at or what happened. >> neighbors say they saw gear

drag his mother from the burning home and called out to firefighters for help. right now he's in serious condition. his mother is in extremely critical condition and there is a chance she may not survive her injuries. after that house fire firefighters were called to a factory fire. firefighters worked to prevent the fire from reaching a nearby strip mall. the cause of both fires are under investigation. antioch man is killed after crashing his motorcycle. the 23-year-old was riding an off ride motorcycle when he lost control around 9:00 last night. he went over the sidewalk and into bushes before crashing into a tree and fence. officers say the man later died at the hospital. the victims name has not been released. livermore police are looking for a man that may have been trying to kidnap a child. police say a man resembling this sketch walked into a day

expansion project is planned for tomorrow. the federal government committed $900 million to begin construction on that project. bart hopes to have the project completed by 2016. tomorrow's signing ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. at city hall. changing to the cities municipal code to lure businesses to downtown. san jose officials say right now there is a 25% vacancy rate downtown. the proposal under consideration would allow street level space previously reserved for retail stores to be leased to offices. another calls for streamlining the permit process for businesses to sell alcohol. parks department will finalize plans turning a parking lot into a park. park officials say the park will improve the environment and provide city residence with more open space.

civilians. the countries president says 16 people including nine children and three women were killed. nato has apologized for the shootings but not confirmed that anyone was killed. the soldier is being detained by nato forces. the air national guard is preparing to conduct a long range rescue mission out on the mexican coast. allie rasmus is there. >> reporter: those sailors were injured in a diesel fire on their fishing boat and stuck out in the middle of the pacific ocean 700 miles away from the coast of mexico. their location is what makes it difficult for a rescue to happen. that's exact exactly why they were called in to help. they will be flying over that fishing boat and rescuing the two injured sailors. here's how they will do it. we're here at moffett field. you can see one of the helicopters. they use helicopters like this that are able to refuel while

they are suspended in midair over that fishing vessel. offshore left here on the tarmac. they are able to refuel because there are planes like this that will be carrying fuel for that rescue mission. it could take several hours and days. >> they will jump out of the back of it into the water. there they will board an inflatable life raft or inflatable boat. they will take that boat position next to the sailing vessel and board the vessel and provide medical treatment for the injured sailors. >> reporter: the plane left early this morning just before 6:00. the injured sailors are chinese citizens but it's not uncommon for different governments to call on each other to help their citizens in emergency situations like this. this gives you a visual idea of the type of work they do going over out in the middle of the ocean and doing the rescues over the different types of boats. in this case it's a fishing boat that the two injured

the guardsmen left about two hours ago. >> allie rasmus joining us live with more on the complex operation now under way. >> reporter: there are two planes that will be used in this rescue mission. one departed add 6:00. this is the second one. it's on the tarmac. the engines are going. it's about to take off. now they are going to rescue two sailors who were severely burned in a diesel fire on their fishing boat. the problem is the coast guard and the rescue groups can't get to that fishing boat because their boat is 700 miles off the coast of mexico. that is why the 129th rescue wing was called in to help. they are one of three air guard units in the country that can do the rescues out in the middle of the ocean. the other two are in alaska and new york. obviously california is the closest to that fishing boat. what they are going to do they will be using a helicopter like one of the ones they have out here on the tarmac to go over

into the middle of the pacific ocean. that helicopter will be used to lower some of the para rescue members out into the middle of the water. now that helicopter has the ability to be refueled while it's suspended in midair. that's what this other plane will be doing. this is the plane that is taking the fuel that will be part of the rescue mission flying alongside that helicopter. it could take several hours and days to do this mission. this is video we got just in the last 30 minutes of some of the pilots and crew members loading that refueling plane that is about to take off that will be used in this mission. >> we are going to drop four rescue men into the water. they will then get on an inflatable raft. board the raft, go to the vessels location, board the vessel and start providing life saving medical treatment to the two burn victims. >> reporter: now the rescue

gray skies and light winds. back to you. bay area national guardsmen are on a plane as part of an international rescue mission 700 miles off the coast of mexico. they're going to try to save two injured sailors. >> reporter: the sailors are from china. they were severely burned in a diesel fire that happened on their fishing boat. their fishing boat is stuck in the middle of the pacific ocean 700 miles away from the coast of mexico. why are we here at moffett field? month of etd field is where the 129th rescue wing of the california air national guard is based. they're one of the few groups in the country with the ability to do rescues that far out at sea. this morning they were called out to help and two planes left moffett field for that mission.

the last plane left just 20 minutes ago. on board the planes are rescue helicopters, a crew of 30 people, and lots of fuel. they'll parachute off the helicopters on to a raft next to that stranded fishing boat to get to the injured fishermen. these are pictures of the 129th rescue wing's prior missions. this does give you a visual idea of the type of work they do, rescuing people from out in the middle of the ocean. their helicopters can refuel in mid-air and that makes it possible to conduct these rescue missions without stopping on land. >> the helicopters can then hoist an individual off in this case a vessel over water, they can hoist the two individuals off this fishing vessel and then transport them to mexico for continued medical treatment. >> reporter: the rescuers have very advanced medical training.

they'll be treating those severely burned fishermen on that stranded boat. the first plane left moffett field just before 6:00 a.m. the last one left about a half- hour ago. the injured sailors are chinese citizens. it's not uncommon for different governments to call on each other for help in these type of situations rescuing their citizens. this is one of three units in the air marble guard that has the ability to do these far out at sea rescue missions. the other two are in alaska and new york. so the one here at moffett field is the closest to where this stranded fishing boat is. back to you. overnight, a man? jail after a road rage incident in oakland. this started just after midnight. a woman says a driver ran a red light at 17th and castro streets and hit the vehicle she and her boyfriend were in. there was an altercation. the woman says she and her boyfriend were assaulted by the

drive and his female passenger who then left the scene. a police officer later pulled that vehicle over. police say the victims identified the driver as the man who hit their car. dozens of san francisco firefighters worked to put out a fire in the castro. the fire started just before 4:00 a.m. on market between sanchez and church streets. it started in the basement. it took about 15 minutes to put that fire out. we know the name of the man killed during a fire at his home in alameda. the fire started just before 9:00 last night at a home on elm street. the fire was first reported by a neighbor. when firefighters got there, they found kenneth chase in the hallway. they say he was having a heart attack. >> the the patient was removed from the home. cpr of initiated. he was taken to the hospital. >> he was pronounced dead at the hospital. his dog was killed in the fire.

the fire started in the kitchen. a pilot and his two passengers walked away from plane crash in sacramento county. the twin engine aircraft went down last night in a field a few miles from the rio linda airport. the plane's wings were ripped off. all three men on board suffered cuts to their faces. a newspaper reporter won't see berkeley's mess chief after the chief demanded an article be rewritten in the middle of the night. the chief says emotions ran high during a public meeting held last thursday. at that meeting he was peppered with questions about his department's response to the beating death of a resident last month. he thought the oakland tribune online story misrepresented his comments, so the chief sent a

from the local air national guard. they're on their way to faishing boat 700 miles off the coast of mexico. we'll go live to moffett field for more on what they are doing and how long this mission will take. an extensive search is underway for four fishermen missing off the coast of washington. the search began early yesterday morning after the coast guard picked up a distress signal from a 70-foot fishing boat. a helicopter crew tracked it down and found a debris field and a lifeboat but with no one on board. the fishing boat is part of a northwest trawl fleet which scoops up fish with nets drawn from behind the boats. >> people are very concerned and from the coast guard stand point, i'm just telling the community that we're looking as hard as we can. we're putting a lot of resources to bear to try to find these individuals. >> that search and rescue effort includes two coast guard helicopters two, lifeboats and a plane. news helicopters captured a high speed chase in southern california overnight. police pursued a truck through the streets of southern los

angeles for about a half-hour. that chase ended when a police cruiser rear ended the suspect's vehicle causing it to spin out and crash into a light post. the suspect crawled out of the truck and surrendered. back here if the bay area, livermore police are looking for man who may have been trying to kidnap a child. police say a man resembling this sketch walk into a day care center at the livermore valley tennis club about 1:15 yesterday. he .ed at a four-year-old boy and said threfs to pick up his son. but when an employee asked him for verification, he was unable to produce it and he left. the boy's mother said she did not authorize anyone to pick up her son. the man is described as in his 40s, 6 feet tall, 250 pounds, blond hair and long sideburns. family members are holding vigil for a 92-year-old-year- old woman pulled out of the her burning home by her son.

this is the hayward home where it happened. early yesterday morning an explosion was heard in the house burst into flames. family members sea he was supposed to meet with them in sacramento. >> we got news that something happened but we couldn't get ahold of him. they did not know what hospital he was at or what had happened. >> neighbors say they saw him drag his mother from the burning home and called out to five fees for help -- firefighters for help. he is in serious condition in the hospital. doctors say his mother is in extremely critical condition and there is a chance she may not survive her injuries. two hours after that house fire, hayward firefighters were called to a warehouse on jackson street. firefighters worked to prevent the fire from reaching a nearby strip mall. the cause of both fires are under investigation. it was delayed for days. tomorrow morning jury selection is set to begin in the trial of

still remains. the disaster killed more than 19,000 people. there is a memorial in san francisco's japantown beginning at 2:00 p.m. gentleman firefighters say an overloaded kitchen out lee is the likely cause of a fatal house fire in alameda. 59-year-old ken chase suffered a heart attack during the fire. he died at the hospital. his dog was also killed. his body was found inside the home by firefighters. three people escaped serious injury after their plane crashed last night in sacramento county. a plane's wings were ripped off and the propel erpz bent backwards. early this morning members of the 129th rescue wing of the california air national guard left for a rescue mission off of the coast of mexico. we were at moffett field when they took off. we're live with more on their mission. >> reporter: they're going to rescue two injured fishermen

from china. the fishermen were severely burned in a diesel fire that happened on their boat on friday. the problem is that boat is stuck in the middle of the pacific ocean 700 miles from the coast of mexico. so what are we doing here at moffett field? this is where the 129th rescue wing of the california air national guard is based. they're one of the few rescue groups in the country with the ability and the resources to do rescues that far out at sea. that's why they were called to help. we watched two planes leave moffett field for their mission. the last plane left about an hour ago and on boar the two planes are helicopters, a crew of 42 people and loot lots of fuel. pararescuemen will parachute from the rescue planes into the ocean to get to the injured fishermen. they use the helicopters to hoist up the patients and medevac them to the nearest hospital on land. these are pictures of the 129th

rescue wing's prior missions. this does give you an idea of the work they've done in the past rescuing people out from the middle of the ocean. their helicopters can refuel in mid-air. that's what makes it possible to conduct these rescue missions without stopping on land. >> the guardian angel pararescuemen will jump out of the back of it into the water. they'll board an inflatable boat. they'll take that boat, position it next to the sailing vessel, then board the vessel, then provide medical treatment for the injured sailors. >> reporter: the first plane with the pararescuemen on board left just before 6:00 a.m. the injured sailors are chinese citizens. the california air national guard said it's not uncommon for different governments to call on each other for help rescuing their citizens in emergency situations like this. the 129th rescue wing based here at moffett field is one of only three air national guard units with the ability to do these middle of the ocean rescues. the other two are in alaska and

one in new york. so obviously the one based here at moffett field is the closest to where this fishing boat is off the coast of mexico. back to you. a man? jail after a lateral drug bust in san mateo. police provided these pictures of more than 500 plants found inside a home on 31st avenue near west hillsdale boulevard. police said the marijuana was not being grown for medical purposes. officers estimated the value at $400,000. 49-year-old lynn tang was arrested thursday on suspicion of illegal marijuana cultivation. a man visiting the bay area from new york is facing dui charges in connection to a crash that knocked out power to a san leandro neighborhood. the man's car slam into a power pole around 4:00 a.m. yesterday on manor boulevard and jupiter street. power was knocked out to about 600 customers. the majority of the customers had their power restored by late yesterday morning.

the driver suffered minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of dui. the city of oakland has spent nearly -- go ahead. >> $3 million on police overtime related to the occupy protests. that's according to the local oakland website. they say city records show overtime costs of reached $2.9 million as of february 27th. they found the city spent $82,000 in overtime for the public works department, the department in chft maintenance work at frank ogawa plaza. people who live in pittsburg may notice the smell of gas tomorrow. don't be alarmed. pg&e is venting a gas pipeline in that area as part of a pressure test. the company says there's no reason for concern because the gas is not harmful and it should dissipate quickly. a ceremony to celebrate federal funding for the bart expansion to san jose project is planned for tomorrow. the federal government committed $900 million to begin construction of the project. ground breaking on the ten-mile line is slated for next month. bart hopes the project will be
