today. more fallout in afghanistan after a deadly shooting rampage by an american soldier. the action that the taliban is vowing to take against the u.s. military. on a winter we haven't had much rain there are signs we will finally get some. we'll have that coming up here. good morning. it's monday, march 12 i'm ken wayne. >> and i'm maureen naylor. both dave and pam are off this morning. let's start with steve who is here with a look at this weather. >> it sure looks like the last full week of winter here. we get close to the official day of spring. we have weather to deal with. that will start tomorrow. temperatures today starting off 30s and 40s. we'll have some possible rainfall projections coming up in seven minutes. here is sal. steve, good morning. 80 is getting more crowded as

people are driving on westbound 80. drive carefully as you drive out toward the mccarthur maze. also the morning commute looking pretty good as you are driving up to the bay bridge toll plaza. 6:00 let's go back to ken and maureen. topping our news at 6:00 it has been a violent night on the streets of oakland. police are investigating two overnight shootings with a total of three victims including a 13-year-old girl. ktvu allie rasmus joins us live from oakland police head quarters with what she is learning. >> reporter: investigators are trying to piece together what leads up to the two separate overnight shootings. one of the victims very young a 13-year-old girl. the girl was shot in the forearm and taken to children's hospital in oakland around 2:30 this morning. she is expected to recover from her injuries. as you can imagine, there is a lot of questions how this happened to her. police found the 13-year-old at the intersection of 18th avenue and east 15th street at 2:30 this morning. that is not where the young

victim was shot. that's where she was dropped off. at this point they are trying to figure out how she got there. police have no information on possible suspects. police at this point don't believe that shooting of that 13-year-old girl is connected to a shooting that happened three hours before that in oakland. two men suffered nonlife threatening gunshot wounds sat an apartment complex. one of the victims you can see was sitting upright and appeared to be alert as paramedics loaded him in an ambulance. both victims are expected to recover. police have not revealed their ages or identities. at this point they don't have any suspects or suspect information that particular shooting. live in oakland allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. the alameda county coroners office is investigating a grim discovery in hayward. last night police found a man's body on the rocks near the hayward regional shoreline. at this point it's not clear how the man died but

investigators say there is no sign of foul play. the coroner hopes to identify the man sometime later today. the taliban is vowing revenge for the killing of 16 civilians in afghanistan. an american soldier is accused of going to three houses shooting the people inside and then burning their bodies. the dead include nine children and three women. u.s. officials have identified the shooter as an army staff sergeant. no word on a motive for the shooting. coming up we'll have a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom with reaction from president obama and the republican presidential candidate. a controversy involving berkeley police chief could make his officers jobs a little more difficult. ktvu tara moriarty is in berkeley this morning to tell us. >> reporter: city council woman and the city manager plan to meet today to discuss what some

are calling police by intimidation. now they are referring to something that best of my recollectionly's police chief did last week. michael meehan sent a sergeant to a newspaper reporters home thursday after midnight. he regrets trying to change an oakland tribune's story online. he had a sergeant knock on oakley's door while he and his family slept. he wanted him to adjust a part of the article. pier an insists it wasn't true and only apologized for the departments inability to get information out about the killing sooner. residence were angry that police did not respond to the call made. oakley made minor changes in the morning. when the sheriff was not satisfy the that's when he spoke up. he does not plan to sue and will report to work today.

the berkeley police association has not stood behind meehan but rather the community say they are gravely concerned about meehan's actions. live from berkeley i'm tara moriarty. jury selection continues this morning in the trial of san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi. 144 potential jurors will be answering questions today. the judge will also consider a change of venue request. mirkarimi is charged with misdemeanor domestic violence bot re, child endangerment and persuading a witness. he has pleaded not guilty. time is 6:05. a concord woman is facing dui and child endanger charges after a crash involving her three-year-old daughter. the truck they were in crash into a utility pole around 4:30 yesterday morning. that knocked out power to 4,000 pg&e customers. no one was hurt. police say the woman was the driver but witnesses tell us they saw a man behind the wheel jump out and run away.

>> i thought he was the only one in the car. three or four minutes later here comes that little lady and kid. >> the woman and child left the seen in a taxi. police later arrested her at a nearby apartment complex. as for the power outage several people are said to be in the dark. city leaders will hold a signing ceremony at san jose city hall this morning to commemorate the grant from the federal transit administration. ground breaking on the ten mile $2.1 million line from the fremont station to the bay area is set for next month. bart hopes to have the project completed by 2016. the the late morning commute could be slow through part of oakland this week. starting at 10:00 a.m. today cal tran will shut down the number four line from lake shore avenue to park boulevard. the closure will last until

3:00 this afternoon but cal tran will continue the 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. closures until thursday. maintenance crews plan on trimming tree there is. did you have the backup alarm clock to the alarm clock this morning? >> especially after that hour change. spring forward as people call it the worst day of the year. especially when you are on this shift you feel it too. >> yeah. i had to change the clocks around here. it's 6:00 but it feels like 5:00. we'll get through it. the commute looks like it would at 6:00. let's go outside and take a look at what we have here on the bay bridge. we are getting a little bit of a crowd here. usually the crowd starts getting really big at 6:15. that's when metering lights turn on. also the morning commute looks good on interstate 880 north and southbound as you drive past the coliseum. on the peninsula 101 and 280 still looking pretty good if your trying to give a drive to

the airport. 6:07 let's go to steve. blood count thank you. very happy monday morning. mostly clear. cold out there. 30s and 40s. that system we're waiting for for tuesday is up to the north. it won't be here until tomorrow. there is rain to the north. the system is lifting a little bit. it's really a slow mover as it develops. lean on tuesday morning. now between tuesday and sunday, there is a possibility some pretty significant rain around here. again we don't want to head fake here we've had a dry, dry year. i buy it north of cape mendocino. it sure looks like it's over. santa cruz mountains could pick up decent totals and really good snow in the sierra. that would be between tuesday and sunday. today we start waff with mostly clear skies. our system is right back in there. the low will start carving itself out.

happening right now we have breaking news coming in from the midwest. we want to show you live pictures of a school bus crash in indianapolis, indiana. the camera there is zooming if and out of the bus. police are not saying much at this time. we are told that the crash killed the bus driver. it sounds like several people may be injured in this crash. apparently it happened this morning. you can see a little bit wet there. it has been raining in the area although it's unclear if weather has played a role. early reports including cnn are saying that one child and a school bus driver both died this morning after this crash. apparently the bus may have gotten stuck on a bridge support beam. it's somewhat under a bridge or

overpass there. they are still investigating it at this point. we will continue to follow this and bring you any information as it becomes available. from afghanistan to here in the bay area we are getting reaction to the killings of 16 afghan civilians allegedly by a u.s. soldier. members of the afghan soccer club in fremont are calling the deaths shocking and sad. fremont has a large afghan population with part of the city known as little kabul. >> it's not good. it's not good for u.s. government. not for afghan government and people for those soldiers too that they put their life in danger. >> international relations professor at san francisco state tells ktvu this attack will increase tension in afghanistan and leave an opening for the taliban. the pentagon says its investigation of the alleged mass shooting in afghanistan is already under way. army staff sergeant from joint

base lewis mccord in washington state is accused of going door to door in afghanistan and shooting the 16 civilians. many of them children. scott mcfarland is in washington, d.c. with candidates reacting to this new. scott. >> reporter: we did checking. the president doesn't have any public speeches or military related events today. you have to bet this will be the main focus in washington, d.c. today. look at the picture of president obama making a phone call to president karzai expressing condolences. rick santorum called the shooting very disturbing and shooing. newt gingrich says we have to convince the people that justice will be served. u.s. must be on track to get out of afghanistan as soon as possible. >> our troops are under tremendous pressure in afghanistan. it's a war like no other war we have been involved in.

but no one can condone or make any suggestion that what he did was right. >> reporter: u.s. support of the u.s. military presence in afghanistan is already dwindling. new report a new poll from the washington post says 60% of americans don't think the war is worth fighting. live in washington, scott mcfarland. your time is 6:15. university of maryland student is under arrest accused of threatening to go on a shooting rampage at the college. 19-year-old alexander song posted the threat online. the message stated he would kill enough people to make the national news. song is now under going a psychiatric evaluation. here in california ucla daily newspaper is reporting the entire uc system is considering asking incoming students to declare their sexual orientation. they made the recommendation back in january. they would make the declaration

on the forms they sign when they accept their offer. it would be optional and apply to all campuses. the uc academic senate could lead schools to offer more services to lbgt students. at 8:00 this morning pacific time a pretrial hearing is scheduled for accused child molester jerry sandusky. the former penn state football coach faces 52 criminal counts. a judge will decide -- sandusky's lawyers want the precise times and dates when the alleged abuses happened. sandusky is not supposed tautened today's hearing. it looks like oakland schools won't have to change schools at all. a second wave of school closures have been canceled. tony smith told a group of teachers next week he doesn't

think more closings are necessary. for the first time in a decade the next school year will not begin with a deficit. 6:17. people that live in and around pittsburg may smell natural gas today. they will be conducting pressure test on its gas lines in pittsburg today. to do that that will be venting a gas pipeline. pg&e says it's not harmful and the smell will dispate quickly. utility has already called people near the line warning people it will be vented today. after 30 seasons it's the end of the road for the lake tahoe music festival. they sited competition from other classical musical organizations as a part of a decision to disban. it was founded in 1982 by the conductor of san francisco chamber orchestra. it started off featuring classical music and then grew to include pop acts.

6:18. steve will be talking about more snow coming to the area. but sal as we talk about traffic this morning we want to enjoy this before rain moves in later this week. >> yeah. today we won't have a wet commute in the morning at least. traffic is moving along pretty well. i want to show you pictures here starting off contra costa county. it's already stop and go in antioch. just here and there on the way down to walnut creek. moving along and taking a look at the san mateo brine that's good. in the south by the traffic is off to a good start. so far so good. steve. >> sal. >> anchorage, alaska has received 126 inches of snow. >> what is their average? >> 75. >> thank you, sal. it's almost a record. there is a ton of snow.

we'll get some here starting tomorrow up in the sierra. and continuing through the rest of the week. it's cold out there again. 30s and 40s. a lot of 36s there. fairfield, napa, and airport. if this system stalls out we will have decent amounts. it looks like we will get rain out of this system and then cold air by this weekend. upcoming weekend will be much, much colder. partly sunny today. more clouds toward the mort guy. breezy by the hills. rain comes in on tuesday. sierra looking for a winter storm warping starting at 11:00 tonight and goes until 5:00 a.m. on wednesday. 60s for temps or upper 50s. but then by tonight we have the clouds rolling in and temperatures will really drop off the table by the weekend.

rain moves in tuesday early wednesday. we get a break. no -- reign fall car companies are making it easier to rent environmentally friendly cars. hertz has electric cars in san francisco, london, and washington d.c. fleets. anoa vis is adding chevy vaults to the new york cars. many hotels are accommodating the switch by offering free charging stations. gas price in the bay area continue to inch up. prices are up an average of one or two cents in the last week. as initial prices are highest in san francisco where a gallon of regular is $4.41. in oakland and san jose the average is $4.34. santa rosa it's a penny less.

good morning. we are getting a crowd add the bay bridge. metering lights have been turned on. traffic on the bridge looks good. you'll have to wade through a little bit of slime to get there. man on los angeles lead -- led police through a dangerous car chase. the chase ended when police rear ended the vehicle. forcing the driver to crash into a light pole. the man crawled out of the pickup truck and surrounderred. there is no word on why he was running from police. a man apparently intoxicated was rescued from the water in walnut creek. the call went out shortly before 8:00 last night. they tell the times a man in his 40s was waste deep in a creek near newellisten avenue and maine street.

a young hero from san francisco is expected to hear from the congressional medal of honor association today. keena will ideals will hear tea. that is when williams jumped out of her car and pulled a driver out of this burning big rig on highway 101 in san francisco. your time is 6:26. one year after a deadly earthquake and tsunami japanese leaders are pledging to rebuild their country. in one of the hardest hit areas thousands of people filled the baseball stadium to mourn their loss. 300,000 people across the country are still living in temporary housing. much of the debris remains piled up. only 6% has been incinerated. san francisco japantown was one of many places world-wide

that held memorial services yesterday. events included a moment of silence at 2:46:00 p.m. to mark exactly when the magnitude 9.0 quake hit north eastern japan. the bay area ceremony concluded with people scrawling personal condolence mess annals on paper strips. those will be sent to quake survivors. >> especially the grandchildren. he doesn't like to be seeing the sea or anything. the shake kind of shook him up. >> one person back from the disaster zone says many survivors are dealing with post dramatic stress disorder. a relief fund has raised $4 million to help in the disaster. a bay area marine hasn't been seen or heard from in ten

well. good morning, and thank you for joining us on ktvu channel 2 morning news. it's mopped march 12 -- it's monday march 12th i'm ken wayne. >> and i'm maureen naylor. your time is 6:30. we begin this half hour with overnight news from oakland. police are investigating two shootings. three hours apart. there are a total of three victims including a 13-year-old girl. allie rasmus joins us live from oakland police headquarters with details. >> reporter: police tell us that 13-year-old girl was shot in the forearm. she is expected to recover. because she doesn't have life threaten injuries police are hoping police investigators will be able to talk to her. this is the intersection where that girl was found. it's 18th avenue and east 15th street around 2:30 this morning. from there paramedics rushed her to oakland children's hospital. that intersection is not where this young girl was shot. that is where someone dropped

her off. investigators are trying to figure out how she got here and who did that to her. again the 13-year-old shooting slick tim was shot in the arm and she is expected to recover. police don't believe this shooting was connected to another one that happened three hours earlier. just before 11:00 last night gunfire broke out. two men were found shot. suffering from nonlife threatening gunshot wounds. one of them appeared alert and sitting upright as paramedics loaded him in an ambulance. police have not told us the age or identities of those two male shooting victims. at this point investigators are trying to piece together the circumstances that may have lead up to that shooting. they don't have a motive at this point. live in oakland allie rasmus. meantime five robbery suspects are behind bars in oakland this morning. police arrested three suspects last night following a robbery on 18th street.

hours earlier officers arrested two others following a robbery on fifth avenue. police are now checking to see if any of these men may be responsible for earlier robberies across oakland. time is 6:32. a camping and rock climbing trip by a bay area marine has lead to an all out search to find him. the search is centered near the sharp park golf course and san mateo county coast. ktvu lorraine blanco joins us live with the clues investigators are following up on this morning. >> reporter: police found the missing marine's vehicle in this quiet pacifica neighborhood. crews have been searching it since thursday but no one has heard from the marine in ten days. here's a look at missing 27- year-old joseph mchenry. he has a u.s. marine corp tattoo on his chest. he's 5'10", 170 pounds black hair and brown eyes. he was heading to a beach to do rock climbing and camping. that was on march 2nd.

search and rescue crews combed the area all weekend but they are open to the idea he may be somewhere else. >> you never know if they are in the search area. we have a possibility to believe he's in the search area. we did find some gear during our search on thursday. >> reporter: the san mateo sheriffs department and san bruno police got help from volunteers in the search this weekend. if you have any information about mchenry's whereabouts you are urged to call the police department. members of the california air national guard base in the south bay are on a rescue mission hundreds of miles away. coming up at 6:45 who they are helping now off the coast of mexico. >> uc berkeley has taken action. according to bay area news group records show former

assistant vice chancellor dianne pushed for five pay hikes for 30-year-old donaldson. he was earning $70,000 a year. by 2010 he was earning $110,000. the raises started in 2009 when the two began dating. she was demoted and her pay was cut from $188,000 to $175,000. 6:34. occupy protestors are planning several demonstrations today. this time targeting county recorder officers. protestors are expected to gather outside recorder officers in san francisco, sonoma and other counties starting at 9:30 this morning. they will be asking county officials to conduct awe tits of foreclosures. occupy protestors say too many incidents of foreclosure fraud is taking place across california. we have new information regarding the school bus crash in indianapolis. we showed you a little while ago. police say the driver of the school bus and a child on that

bus were killed in the wreck. eight other people aboard were injured. two of them are in critical condition. investigators say for some reason the school bus hit a support to an overpass. it happened around #-- 8:00 this morning our time. they range in age from 5-16. republican presidential candidate newt gingrich has the mosted a stake in tomorrow's primaries in mississippi and alabama. so far gingrich has won just two state. georgia and south carolina. he's been campaigning heavily in mississippi and alabama. if he doesn't win there, it would be considered a big blow to his campaign. rick santorum has been spending time in two southern states and confident of his chances tomorrow. >> mississippi and alabama are both competitive states. congressman gingrich is trying to stake his claim here. we think the people will vote

for the conservative that represents their values. >> mitt romney and ron paul haven't spent much time campaigning in mississippi or alabama. ron paul appeared at a town hall in missouri. san mateo congresswoman jackie spears is chosen as one of the most fearless women. spears was chosen because she helped expose a problem with rape and sexual problems. & jennifer newsom. also attorney general kamala harris is on the list. and kidnapping survivor elizabeth smart for her work on stronger child protection laws. time is 6:37. let's see how people are adjusting to the earlier hour. we had to move our clocks. everybody is out and about. are they sal?

>> they are. the alarm clocks went off. but people might not be in their right mind. [ laughter ] but darker please drive carefully. we've had a bunch of fender benders. westbound bay bridge that is not looking good. very crowded. even 880 that delay. this is one of the thicker delays we've seen in awhile. it's backed up for a 15-20 minute delay getting on to the bridge. also the morning commute is looking pretty good here on interstate 880 but definitely crowded as you drive past the coliseum. and i want to show you a video of a car fire in pacifica that happened at 4:30 this morning between sharp park road and ridgeway drive. at this point we don't know if anyone was hurt in the incident. so far the fire department has cleaned up the area. we still haven't found out if anybody was injured. but you still may see them trying to tow this badly damage vehicle away from the scene. i want to add something else.

in san francisco at corner of fourth and townsend there is an accident involving a pedestrian. now as we look at 101 and 280 that traffic is moving along very well. let's go to steve. thank you very much. a very good monday morning. a little cool down over the weekend especially on sunday. today is looking okay. more clouds to the north. waiting for that system right there to move in on tuesday. there is rain to the north. not a lot. it's the leading edge of what we hope and what it's looking like a wet week. remember the last month above average was october. you hope everything continues to march in azides advertised. we've had a lot of systems come in and not do much. the possibility set for a very wet pattern. mendocino county and lake county. after that things tail off. this would be possible rain accumulations between tuesday and sunday. and there is a real screening

good morning. here's a quick look at the top stories we are following right now. oakland police are investigating two overnight shootings. there are a total of three victims including a 13-year-old girl. so far police have not made any arrests. ktvu allie rasmus will have more at the top of this hour. the search is continuing for u.s. marine that hasn't been seen or heard from in ten days. this man 27-year-old john mchenry told family members he planned to go rock climbing and camping on the pacifica shoreline. so far police have only found mchenry's car. the taliban is vowing revenge for the killing of 16 afghan civilians. a u.s. soldier reportedly

entered three houses in a village near his base and killed everyone inside. the dead include nine children and three women. 6:44. more fallout is expected this week from a controversy involving berkeley police chief. tara moriarty is live in berkeley this morning where the city council could get involved after the allegations of abuse of power. tara. >> reporter: censorship by intimidation. that's how some are referring to the fact that the police chief sent a sergeant to a newspaper reporter house yesterday. and today a city council woman will meet to talk about it. michael meehan sent sergeant mary cussmass to the house of oakley. he knocked on oakleys door while he and his family slept. she said she was mortified to wake him up but was under orders. the article said meehan apologized for the departments slow response to berkeley's

homicide. but meehan said that wasn't true and only apologized for the departments inability to get information out about the killings sooner. peter cukor was killed by an intruder. oakley made minor changes in the morning. but when the chief wasn't satisfied that's when he spoke up. meehan said sorry to oakley. oakley will report to work today anywhen while the berkeley police association says they are gravely concerned about meehan's actions. and how do you think berkeley's city council should respond to the incident? that's the questions we're asking our viewers on facebook this morning. frank wrote if berkeley doesn't want an out of control police department, they will at least suspend him. math lin wrote the council should suspend the chief.
