we needed the rain. i love the rain. i wish more would come. >> reporter: to a lot of people, you have to be careful what you wish for. north bay, let's go to eric rasmussen. >> reporter: what was highway 12 and 121 in sonoma county became an extension of the creek as rain and high tide forced a road block. >> i have to turn around and find it another way. the storm brought large trees down on to this house. over the last two days they have seen as much as 4-6 inches of rain. >> crazy. hasn't been like this in forever. >> reporter: yet all of the rain and rising water levels was just what he needed. >> collecting these bottles. nice looking sample there. >> reporter: we found him using this to test what else is

flowing in the water. >> for the amount of sediment that is discharged into the san francisco bay, another reason to study sediment in the streams is for fish. and the health of the stream. >> that was eric rasmussen showing us the situation in the north bay. now to the east bay where down treed knocked out power. a 100-foot pine tree that took down power lines. it fell on tiger tail court before noon. neighbors were told to stay in doors. 24 customers should have electricity on by 8:00 tonight. earlier crews cleared a tree that pelon power lines as well. this was just one of several trees that went down on this

road this morning. 570 customers lost power. >> the chp said it is busy responding to accidents today. including this one. the driver pulled off on to an embankment. nobody was hurt. two people hurt in this accident in san francisco. a taxi cab and a car collided in the rain at eddy and mason street after noon today. paramedics checked out both drivers. >> the storm brought 1-2 feet of new snow in the sierra but it is higher than yesterday. no chain restrictions and this afternoon the rain melted some of the snow that fell earlier in the day. >> all about the snow levels on this one. natant, didn't see anything. here we got two feet. >> they are expecting 5 feet of

snow by the weekend and thought of closing early have faded waw anow. our -- faded away now. ons one-base you can track the rain in -- on www.ktvu.com you can track the rain. a man was shot in east oakland around 9:00 last night. the man was carrying a shotgun. when officers tried to stop him he took off running. officers caught up with him but he pointed the weapon that officers. one opened fire hitting the man in the shoulder. a gun was found at the scene. police say they have been flooded with calls following an arrest of a neighborhood nanny. john walker is facing multiple charges. the parents of one of the children contacted police last week. investigators say there are now at least 8 victims.

one man told us he actually considered hiring him. >> yeah, i could take care of your kids too. and i was like, no, i didn't have a good vibe. >> staffers at the care.com website where he advertised said his back ground check was cleared four days ago. firefighters say ambulances are working overtime and running out of gas. ktvu's david stevenson is live with the safety concerns firefighters are raising. >> reporter: that's right. we learned new information about the conditions of the ambulances and the equipment inside them. the san francisco ambulances are under ifire. >> over 100,000 miles on them. that causes us great concern for the firefighters and the public. >> reporter: the firefighter's

union is ringing the alarm as they prepare to receive state funds. they want to spend money on new hires, equipment and ambulances. we obtained these documents. the audit indicates 24-41 glans racked up 121,000 miles or more. 12-41 are in poor conditions. 42 defibs are 12 years or older. >> you have something so old the manufacturer won't cover the performance. >> it is aging. we have 5 ambulances on order and shortly thereafter we will order another 5. >> reporter: the ambulances are in use around the clock. the fire department admits they don't have enough replacement

. governor jerry brown reached a comrumize on a tax measure to balance the budget. he is joining forces with california federation of teachers. their initiative would drop the sales tax increase to a quarter cent. for those earning more than $500,000 a year it goes up to 3%. supporters could begin collecting signatures next month. administrators of the public employees' retirement system voted today to lower the funds estimateicide annual return. the move costs the state $300 million a year. the rate of return is 7.5%, down a quarter point. a california appeal's court found officials had the right to parole one of the "speed

freak killers." loren herzog was paroled to liven in a trailer in 2010. the city sued to have loren herzog removed. he later committed suicide last month. bart police arrested three people in connection with a string of robberies. the robbery happened on march 8. a man with a gun robbed a woman. bart police say they arrested a man and two juveniles. they may be connected to another robbery along with a series of robberies. the police association is raising new concerns tonight about a change in the policing plan. on monday a plan took effect that includes a shift in focus to commute policing downtown to quell night time violence but the union says that could negatively impact its work with

tonight. ktvu channel 2 news crews around the bay area looking at the impact of two days of solid rain. ktvu's eric rasmussen is live, actually on the road right now. what are conditions like? >> reporter: frank a in the last -- frank, in the last 5 minutes, the rain picked up again. this is a live look at south bound 101. we have been traveling the roads to look at what commuters are dealing with tonight. we are getting a live picture with two live cameras. i am able to keep both hands on the wheel and both eyes on the road as we tell you what we are seeing. chp has been dealing with a number of accidents with the rain storm. been a while since people have been driving in steady rain and we have seen accidents. california highway patrol urging everybody to take it slow out here tonight as they

martin joins us now. >> the rain is moving out of the area but it has been slow. it stalled out over the top of us. reminds me of 1992. when we get our big rainfall it is this type of deal. we are fortunate we didn't have much rain this year and the ground not completely saturated. able to handing 8 inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains. the heaviest rain towards hayward, oakland and the tri- county area. the afternoon commute a mess. morning commute a mess. clouds tomorrow and scattered showers but not as much rain falling. the long range forecast, this is number two, number three is to the north of us. four is behind that. we will get a break tomorrow. in the mountains a winter storm
