"mornings on 2" starts now. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm ken wayne. >> i'm tori campbell. dave clark has the day off. it's thursday, march 13th. a fallen tree triggered a deadly chain of events on highway 134 in oakland hills. it happened near the park boulevard exit just hours ago, lorraine blanco joins us live from the scene with an update on traffic and how this happened. lorraine? >> reporter: well, traffic is actually moving right now. one lane is moving. one lane is shut down on highway 13 near park boulevard while caltrans crews clean up the mess from that fallen tree. the tree was actually on the roadway before the fatal crash. there were two crashes. let's take a look at what the scene was like when we arrived here at 4:30. we were first on scene after

the first emergency calls. we saw a 20-foot tree across the entire roadway. two different vehicles crashed into that vehicle. the first car with four people inside, crashed, got out of the vehicle and moved to the right shoulder. a short time after, a pickup truck crashed into that tree as well, went airborne and hit that car as well. >> we do know from our plim investigation there does not appear to be any -- preliminary investigation there does not appear to be any -- we've had other incidents where trees have come down either into the roadway or blocking the onramp. >> reporter: when the second vehicle crashed into that tree, it split the tree in half, and a branch flew off, trapping one of the passengers from that first vehicle. we're told that person is expected to survive. four people were transported with nonlife-threatening injuries. the chp says the best thing to do after the crash is to stay

inside your car and restrain. you have a better chance of survival if you stay in your car. right now there's no estimated time when the right lane will open. but as you can see, the traffic is fro flowing on the -- is flowing on the left lane. lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. the chp says the roads played a major role in shutting down highway 880. this was near the 98th overpass. two cars slammed into a mu sedan that slam -- blue sedan that slammed into the highway. emergency crews used the jaws of life to remove the victims from the cars. two people were taken to the hospital. the chp says we can all learn an important safety lesson from this crash. >> my advice to everyone out

there, slow down. take due caution before it starts to rain because the roadways are still wet. and do take due caution when it stops because it doesn't mean the roads are dry they are investigating whether alcohol played a role in this freeway pileup. the stormy weather may have played a role in this crash outside the ikea store in emeryville. the car veered off the road and slammed into a fire hydrant on shellman sending water gushing in the air. the water created traffic problems. the driver was not hurt. a firefighter was injured battling a fire in san jose. flames broke out in a four-unit homed on underwood drive. that's near san thomas expressway. the firefighter fell through the roof and bushed. officials say his flame retardant equipment probably

saved his life. the fire began on the first floor and spread to the attic. i want to show you some pictures taken by photographer, craig allen rose. you can see the intense flames around the firefighters as they battle the fire. investigators think this may have started bashsh -- this may have been started by a lit candle. the injured firefighter is in stable condition in the hospital. none of the 17 residents injured. coming up at 7:30, we'll have a live report from the neighborhood and hear from a mother who scrambled to get out of her home with her 7-week-old child. 7:05. christian kafton is live from the santa cruz beach boardwalk. what's happening there? >> reporter: we're looking over at the beach boardwalk.

now, ordinarily, the san lorenzo river runs right here right through through the channel, right out to the pacific ocean. but what's happening right now, the river has kicked a little bit to the west here making a right turn. it's now running along the back side of that park. the big problem, it's running along the park's retaining wall. the water has already washed away a wooden stairway. i spoke with a maintenance worker when we first arrived and he said when it gets a little bit lighter, we might be able to make the staircase out into the bay. if the water continues to run along the retaining wall, it could undermine the retaping wall and cause a lot more damage. a spokesperson says the water has never come this close to the park. locals who surf the area say the difference between how the river looks now and how it usually looks is drastic. >> usually, it pushes the sand

bar so the waves get good. right now, it's just widening down the beach. it's not much of a sandbar. it's only one little rain this year. >> reporter: coming back out to our live picture, you can see the earth mover. the park spent a good part of their day using equipment like that trying to redirect the river back into its regular channel. so far, the park says that seems to be parking. but taking a live look at our live picture you can see the san lorenzo river is running along the back side of the park, possibly undermining that back wall which can be a major problem. so clearly, park personnel keep canning an eye on the wall, the river and the weather. for now we're live here in santa cruz, christian kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. this morning, hamid karzai is demanding that u.s. and international troops pull out of villages and rural areas.

president karzai says he conveyed his demand to defense secretary leon panetta during their meeting this morning. it's in reaction to the killing of 16 soldiers committed by an american soldier. coming up, the outrage being expressed after the u.s. soldier has been flown out of the country. here at hole, more weather delays at san francisco airport this morning. the airport will be in float- control mode until midnight tonight. some arriving flights are being delayed more than two hours because of low cloud ceilings. this will delay outbound flights as well. there are no delays or cancellations listed right now at san jose or oakland but you should give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport just in case. >> always good advice. let's check in with sal, see what's happen on the roads and the east shore freeway. >> all right, tori and ken, traffic is moving along slowly in some areas, especially in

watching this batch move into the san mateo county coastline. as far as our forecast for today, we do have still some more shower chances out there. current numbers we are off to a mild start. you can see napa 55. livermore in the upper 50s and san jose right around 58. remember yesterday we had the persist. rainfall acoing the area. that -- across the area. that system sliding out. as a result, we'll hold onto shower chances for the day. plenty of cloud cover, even some spotty drizzle around the bay. the main front that's expected to stall. the rainfall will be picking up, as a result. a few clouds, a few spotty hours. this model should be showing you some showers. but the main action moves in thursday night, early friday

. coming up on 7:30. new this morning. a south bay firefighter injured on the job. he fell through the roof of a four-unit hole on underwood drive in san jose. tara moriarty is there now where families with young children must find a new place to stay. tori? >> reporter: that's right one firefighter fell through the roof. there is a little hole between the smoke stacks and that's where the accident happened. he's expected to be okay. he suffered severe burns to his hands. he's at the burn center now. it was a close call. >> this is where the firefighter came in. we were able to pull him out

quickly and save him from suffering serious injury. >> reporter: a passerby shot these pictures. you can see just how intense the flames were. it did get to a four-alarm, which means 75 firefighters were battling this blaze. now, firefighters are calling the neighbor a hero. he and a -- he and a friend were walking by when he noticed the flames and then they began to knock on doors and woke people up. one woman has a daughter and an infant. >> it's probably about 2:30 in the moving. we smelled smoke in the automatic. my daughter, natalie, she's 7. i was awake the she woke up yelling fire and i had her

with what highway patrol officers say caused this. >> reporter: well, it appears the saturated soil from all of this rain could be partially to blame. right now, you can see highway 13 is now open and traffic is moving smoothly. but for hours this morning, it was shut down after two different vehicles crashed into a large tree. we were first on scene just a few minutes after the first emergency calls. this is what our camera captured, a 20-foot tree laying horizontally across the roadway. the victim was screaming as they attempted to revive the driver. there were two separate crashes of the first car crashed into the fallen tree. everyone got out safely the but a short time late, a pickup crashed into that same tree, went airborne and hit the driver standing 0 the right shom -- standing 0 the right shoulder. >> it appears that -- there is a thing that we tell our
