downtown. ktvu's paul chambers shows us what crews doing and whether it is working. paul? >> reporter: we are taking you on the beach to show you what is going on. right here, 10-15 feet, we had that additional sa, that has now fell into the ocean. that is where they are working to dig a canal to reroute the river. >> reporter: the battle to save the santa cruz beach boardwalk came down to man and machine versus mother nature. >> we felt a sand berm, put sand up so the river would find its way to the sea. >> reporter: it appears to be working. look for yourself. as the pounding of the river eats away, chunks headed to the ocean. >> the power of the storms is

incredible. every year the bigger the storm the more fascinating it is to watch. >> that sand is not cooperative. >> reporter: all day long crews begin digging a canal to reroute the river. if it wasn't for the crews the management fears the water could have done more damage. >> early on we lost stairs. but the water isn't going under the boardwalk. it is looking good. we are pleased. >> reporter: i want you to look. see where they are standing, if it continues that rate it has been, that area will be all gone. as we said, 10-15 feet already let this area. officials will have people out here all night long monitoring the area. there are lot of people checking it out.

a san jose firefighter suffered serious burns when he fell through a roof this morning while fighting a fire. the dramatic picture that was taken before he fell. >> reporter: a dramatic of a photo of a firefighter before he fell through a roof and into flames. he burned his hand when his glove slipped off. >> this is where we were performing the ventilation hole and where the firefighter came in. we pulled him out quickly and saved him from serious injury. >> reporter: when the fire broke out a neighbor happened to be walking by. >> the window exploded and flames were everywhere. >> reporter: they rescued a woman trapped inside the bottom apartment. >> kicked the door in. and we were able to pull her out. >> he saved her life.

we were there as police clashed with protesters, how residue could change a lawsuit involving a injured iraq war veteran. he may not have been injured by a tear gas canister. ktvu's maureen naylor spoke with him and she is in the news room with the new evidence. >> reporter: we had a crew in downtown oakland when the iraq war veteran was injured. now his attorney claims it was not accidental but intentional act by the police and he has evidence that proves that. >> reporter: iraq war veteran scott olsen and his attorney showed us the hat he was wearing the night he was injured last october. >> next thing i know i am laying down on the ground and people are gathering around me trying to help me. >> reporter: his attorney says

in the next two days seeking what we will call substantial financial damages. maureen naylor, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco police are looking for three men in connection with a beating in january. they released this photo that shows the three men they are looking for. those are the three faces. two are believed to have been involved in the beating. they were harassing aume and when the victim intervened they kicked him and punched him and left him unconscious. new information tonight on the deadly accident on highway 13 when a tree fell over. the person who died was 19 years old, a student at university of california at berkeley. ktvu's ken pritchett is live and shows us what happened this afternoon and what is going on right now. ken? >> reporter: we had the heavy

rain yesterday but this tree, that 70-footer, that came down at 2:20 this afternoon. you can see the roots that are exposed after the tree toppled over. the tree crews cleared off the canopy but you can see the tarps where there are holes in the roof. while it is not just been a busy day for tree clearing crews. the one tree led to a fatal accident this morning. >> reporter: from the front of this home it is hard to see the size of the tree but from the backyard it is clear on this slope, the 70-foot pine had nowhere else to go but down. crews were busy today. this was their second downed tree. >> the water and moisture on the tree makes the tree heavy and the wind blowing on it.

calling a murder-suicide is andrew bogut and his 11-year- old center. andrew bogut is a iraq war veteran who just returned and we talked to his cousin who said that she noticed that he was somewhat different. >> i never came around him when he came back but i knew he was mean to my aunt. used to blame her for her -- his dad leaving her. for him not being in his life. >> reporter: police are telling me that they found two weapons inside the apartment and that both andrew bogut and his sister were shot to death and he killed himself after shooting his sister. they are looking for 52-year- old martha gutierrez who is his
