traffic is moving along pretty well around the bay area. no major problems on the bay bridge toll plaza. it looks pretty good. no problems getting on to the upper deck of the bay bridge. the forecast calls for rain later today. this is a look at interstate

880 in oakland. so far so good. let's go back to ken and pam. investigators are trying to figure out what destroyed a fire at a home in napa. a fire started at 11:00 last night. an elderly man was sleeping in the home and awakened by sounds of a fire and his smoke detectors. he was able to get out of the house. investigators believe the fire started near the garage, inside the garage were gun powder and ammunition that caused explosions. no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation. a gilroy mother is feared hurt or dead. that is after her ever -- christien kafton is in gilroy this morning with the frantic search for the missing mother. >> reporter: that search is still under way. i just spoke with gilroy police ten minutes ago.

at this point there is still no update of the wracks of that mother. in the days since that horrific apparent murder-suicide took place friends and neighbors have created this memorial here. police say they are looking for one more potential victim. police were called here to the apartment complex wednesday night after roommates found 11- year-old investigators say they found forensic evidence that 52- year-old martha gutierrez is either critically injured or dead neighbors held a vigil here last night. abel gutierrez moved into with his mother after returning from iraq and he was acting erratic.

family members called them to the home because they were concerned about his behavior. abel gutierrez was suicidal. >> he said he wanted to kill himself. he asked my dad if he thought if he killed himself if he thought my aunt would be hurting. my dad would tell him yeah so don't do it. >> reporter: the priority now is locating martha gutierrez. trying to find out if she is alive or dead. coming out to our live shot you can see how well loved this middle schooler was. later on we will try to go over to gilroy police station to see if they have an update on the search for martha gutierrez. and we will try to lead to luna's school to see how school members there and classmates are dealing with this tragic

loss. the army sergeant accused of killing 16 afghan villagers has an attorney. coming up at 4:46 the disturbing incident that his client witnessed. we learned about a major break in the killing of a solano county football star. police arrested 18-year-old haitian pinale in pinole. he is accused of robbing and killing -- another suspect kenneth franklin was arrested shortly after the shooting. johnson was a line backer for the solano football team. a judge in oakland is expected to release the investigative report of november's pepper spray incident. today's order is expected to end the long legal battle over whether to relouis the uc task forces report on the

controversial incident. a court appeal could delay the release to the public for a few more weeks. video of campus police blasting pepper spray into the eyes of seated protestors ignited a nation-wide protest. among them is a cal professor. she is the woman believed to be shown in the video being grabbed by the hair by police. she is being charged with resisting arrest. apple stores will start selling the new ipad at 8:00 this morning. some bay area tech lovers already have the gadget. select walmart stores started selling the new ipad at 12:01 this morning. the union city walmart only had 40 new ipads in stock. >> once you've had the iphone four with the retina display, there is no going back to seeing the pixels on the screen

and everything like that. >> we also found a line outside the palo alto store with some people bringing tents. apple wouldn't comment why they let walmart get an eight hour jump start on the sell. this is video of a previous protest. a new demonstration is planned outside the store starting at 8:00 this morning. organizers say they want to call attention to what they say is apples abusive workers at the overseas factories. san francisco's district attorney is expressing his concerns over this weeks plea deal. george gascon tells the chronicle he is not convinced mirkarimi believes he is guilty of false imprez -- imprisonment. he plans to raise his concerned about mirkarimis trial on

monday. meantime several groups supporting victims of domestic violence are expressing their anger over the plea deal. they rallied on the steps of san francisco's city hall yesterday. protestors are outraged that he remains sheriff after pleading guilty to domestic violence case. helicopter crash in palo alto is being investigated. the pilot was on the way to the palo alto airport yesterday afternoon when the helicopter had engine problems. she made an emergency landing and crashed into the bay lands nature preserve. pilot walked away with minor injuries. the faa and ntsb are investigating the crash. 4:37. not so bad, sal, as far as rain. i hear it will get worse. maybe the evening commute could be bad. >> yeah. if you mike the decision to take the car, you want to make

generally dry. and the possibility of that on shore flow in your area. that is what we have been seeing over the last few days. drizzle may be flowing even though we are not detecting it here. now a little bit of drizzle at the very least. maybe light rain falling over your area. it's east up along i-80 over fairfield. here is sal. we will continue with the dry conditions mainly but over the course of the morning we will become a little more wide- spread with the rain and the heaviest will come later today. the winds generally light out there ahead of the front. we will turn breezy at times. i showed you a moment ago wide- spread 50s. 55 in concord. 56 livermore. mid upper 50s near san jose. over the north bay low and mid 50s. satellite radar storm to the north of us will pull through. it will be more of a quick moving storm. kind of a quick hitter. heaviest rain will starlet at 4:00. last into the evening hours tomorrow morning. we should be mainly dry. it will not be like that system we saw earlier in the week that sat on us. although we could see a fair amount with this storm as well. let's pick it up here this

morning. notice by noontime, it's pretty wide spread. moving south i'm stopping it here at 6:00. notice the heavy rain hanging over the north bay and shifts by 7:00 or 8:00 it's into areas around the san francisco bay and take until 9:00 until it enters the south bay. 11:00 or midnight it begins to pull out. tomorrow morning we wake up and we are actually mostly dry. scattered showers in the forecast for the weekend. so to sum it up for you here, the rain becoming a little bit more wide-spread as we move through the morning hours. the afternoon will be when we see the rain pick up. the gusts expected to hit 20-30 miles an hour closer to the coast. upper 50s and low 60s from the forecast for this afternoon. 63 expected san jose. 63 mountain view. the extended forecast the chance for showers or thunderstorms we'll have very unstable air in place for the weekend. notice the temps they will drop

good morning, to you. the rain returns. by the afternoon some of the heaviest rain will be falling. showers and cooler weather in the extended forecast for the weekend. the sounds of chain saws once again filled a lafayette neighborhood as crews tried to remove a down tree. the pine actually fell on to a home on kellior race drive -- deloris drive. friends are mourning the death of a uc berkeley freshman that was hit and killed on highway 13 in the oakland kills. kevin had recently returned 19. he's from washington.

he was one of only 1,000 students nation-wide to win the prestigious bill gates scholarship last year to attend uc berkeley. friends say he wanted to be a doctor. >> he will be in our hearts forever. he will be remembered as a really chill really down to earth really nice guy. i feel so bad for his parents. >> yesterday morning kevin was driving with three friends when his toyota crashed into a down tree. they all got out of the car. moments late aeropickup truck came along hit the tree and then kevin. time is 5:45. new surveillance video may help police that killed a 13-year- old girl. jessica funk's body was found in a baseball dugout last tuesday. neighbors said they heard screaming between 8:00 and 9:00 the night before. a home security camera shows someone running near the park

around that same time. investigators believe jessica was in the park for someone she knew for an hour before she died. mohammed ali's first conviction was thrown out on appeal three years ago. he was convicted in 2001 of strangling tracy in san mateo in 1999. she was the daughter of former raiders wide receiver. north korea says it will launch a long-range rocket mounted with a satellite last month. the launches are part of a peaceful space program. this is video release by north korea of a similar launch back in 2009. the u.s. and south korea view the launches as tests of north korea's military missile technology and that is a violation of the united nations ban. intellect the u.s. soldier

accused -- the u.s. soldier accused of killing afghan civilians saw his friend's leg blown off the day before. >> it's a tragedy all the way around. i think it's of interest we have a soldier that has an exemplary record. decorated soldier who was injured in iraq to his brain and body. >> the attorney says the sergeant had been injured twice during three he and his family were not happy that he was being sent to afghanistan. we are just learning that the soldier could be flown to a u.s. military prison at fort levin worth, kansas as early as today. the marine was shot in the head on february 1st while

standing guard at an afghan u.s. base. this is at least the seventh killing of an american military member by afghan troops in the past six weeks. the attorney for the iraq war veteran injured in an occupy protest plans to file a claim against the city of oakland today. 24-year-old veteran scott olson showed ktvu the hat he was wearing that he suffered a head injury. olson's attorney says recent tests on the hat show it was a bean bag fired by an oakland police officer. >> so the bean bag shot indicates whoever fired it intended to hit scott. that puts a very different light on things. >> olson's attorney is expected to reveal the terms of the claim against the city in court today. oakland police say they can't discuss the case due to the ongoing investigation. san francisco police are warning of a robbery scheme

targeting gay men in the castro district. men are being drugged at bars and taken to their homes and robbed. one officer says he recently heard of three incidents in one weekend. police are encouraging people to take steps to prevent robberiesish colluding never leaving drinks unintended and never accepting drinks from strangers. the new 49ers stadium in santa clara is expected to open in 2014. the team may be calling that city home for the next four decades. santa laura city council passed a -- the agreement can only be broken under extreme circumstances. the council voted on a final approval of a bank loan of $150 million. teacher layoffs went out around the bay area.

the mount diablo school district sent out 91 notices. new haven sent out 77. antioch 30. oakland and lafayette issued zero. schools say they are running out of places to cut. that is one of the reasons for fewer layoff warnings. districts have until may 15th to decide on final cuts. plans for a new college satellite campus is moving forward. the school has out grown its space on sand creek boulevard. the plap is to begin construction near highway 4. recently the school was approved as a california educational center. it's according to contra costa times. that means the school will have access to a million dollars in annual state funding. let the hacking games begin. it's the final run of facebook's annual coding competition. also known as the hacker cup. participates had to go through

we are getting an up close look at the damage left behind at this tornado that toucheddown in michigan. the twister ripped through 100 homes. many people spent the night sifting through debris. in dexter, michigan what looks to be like a laundromat was

severely damage. the only thing is remaining is washers and driers. people at the board walk are keeping a close eye on the river. heavy rain caused the river to shift course pitting the board walk in danger of being damaged. yesterday crews moved sand to prevent more damage. the amusement park will be open this weekend as planned. east bay park officials overruled staff recommendations to tear down the slide. instead they decided to try to raise donations from private companies to rebuild and operate the slide. they say the public agency can't afford the $6 million price tag. the slide has been closed for the summer because it's in need of repairs. st. mary's basketball team begins their quest for a national championship team. the game starts at 4:30 this

- 880. traffic between hayward and fremont not a bad drive. let's go to rosemary. that rain is already on the way back. look at storm tracker two. if you are just joining us santa rosa reporting light rain. it is easy to see the possibility of drizzle and light rain all the way down into areas of san rafael, sausalito, some of this drizzle not being picked up by the radar. we have a moist air in place. we have the on shore breeze. it doesn't take a lot to create that drizzle. 55 degrees san francisco. mid 50s in oakland. 53 santa rosa. 54 in napa. this is anywhere from a degree or two from what we started with yesterday. you know what to expect getting outside. we will turn soggy once again. the satellite radar we continue with this pattern. the trough off the coast it will finally begin to sink. as it does by the weekend it will be hanging right over us. that will bring us very unstable weather.
